Next year as a freshman the classes I will take are:
Honors english 9
Ap world history
Ap calculus bc
Honors biology
Ap computer science principals
PLTW Honors intro to engineering
Spanish 2
Will this give me an advantage?
Does your highschool even allow freshmen students to take AP classes? lmfao
yes
damn crazy
is it rare for highschools to allow freshmen students to take Aps?
at my local highschool they only let sophmore and above take aps (atleast thats what i think im only in middle school idk)
dang
though back to your point, if youre comfortable taking such hard classes for a freshman than yeah that will give you an advantage
ok thanks
I’m doing it next year and I have a bunch of friends that did their sophomore year
This is what my friend had to say about it and he’s a junior now
Oh wow
Same I plan doing it next year
Can someone tell me if my schedule sounds good?
APUSH
AP PHYS 2
AP CALC AB
AP LANG
AP COM SCI A
Engineering(Principles)
Computer Graphic arts
So my high school offers AP classes to freshmen but there are only two
ap comp sci
ap human geography
But my school also only lets kids take psych in 11th even though ap psych is one of the easier aps
Wow my country or school doesn't provide AP courses
Did anyone take ap physics 1 algebra based?
Nope! My school allows us too
can anyone tell me what they think of this for gr 11
AP english
functions
visual arts
AP Chem 1
AP Chem 2
Physics
Law
Computer science
my school doesnt
not even honors lol
Should I take normal chemistry freshman year and in sophomore year take AP biology?
I kinda suck in science, but I wanted 3 years so I decided to take physiology. The issue is that our school has limited ap options. I've been told to take ap bio or physics since we don't have ap chem. I suck at both though. The other options for ap classes that I can take are AP Stats (I'm going to take 12th), AP Calc AB (Taking it next year), AP Psych (12th grade), and maybe AP English LIT (12th), but I suck at english too. I just need help overall :/
Yeah, I know at least my school requires chem to take AP bio
I would definitely go talk to a school counselor because they’re the ones that know and understand the classes the best. They can help lead you in right direction. You could also dual enroll (idk the process), so that you could still earn college credits.
Okay tyy
what are some study guides or other sources that can help me prepare for bio
If there someone here has done the IB, or is a 2nd year DP student, i need some help
Sophmore year of HS, are my classes good?
APUSH
Honors English
AP Art
Honors Chemistry
Honors Algebra 2
Latin 3 Honors
is my schedule good for sophomore year of hs?
apush, ap physics 2, latin 2 honors, english 10 honors, algebra 2 honors, chemistry honors
are my classes for next year good, im going to start high school next year
accelerated geometry b/honors algebra II
biology I honors
9th lit honors
AP world history
Spanish II
intro to mechatronics
health/personal fitness
i have my whole high school plan written out
I'm aiming for MIT since im into engineering and computer science
also these classes were confirmed, we got to see our reccomendations a couple weeks ago and i got the classes i wanted
Thats good!!
If you have planned it out try to take some classes which are related to your interests for your future because colleges look for that
I have the same classes for
junior!!
Only instead of latin i took entrepreneurship, computer science honors and computer science AP
Oh ya and i toook apush in junior year
Hey 👋
I'm currently picking classes for 9th grade should I take honors
That fully depends on what your goal with college and stuff is but I'd take that
Is that the highest level course offered?
so im taking honors chemistry instead of non-honors
Yes
I feel like I should take at least one
Colleges will look at the context of your high school, so if you take the highest level classes (in your cash honours, my case APs and DCs) then it's the same thing to them
So anything beyond on level
you're taking the most rigorous level that you're able to take so that's what matters to colleges, I'd say take honours in the subject department that you want to go into a career for
Absolutely
Itll help you a lot and push you further
Would a B in honors equal an A in regular
really, yea
And it also acts as a bridge to AP courses
I would said do full honor class then slowly climb for ap and dc
Ap for courses u actually stay focused on
most Freshmen and Sophomores can't take too many APs compared to Juniors and Seniors so it really depends
Or academically gifted🤧
^^^
At my school, Sophomores can take 2 (Psych and World) and Freshmen can take one (HUG)
You should prioritize taking honors courses in freshman and sophomore year
So I wouldn't wait if APs are offered because you get that trial run your first two years
Since you also have to build extracurricular
Might as well rack up a couple AP credits
Junior n senior is when stuff begins like being active in the community
Seeing as extracurricular just got mentioned
One more thing is don't just stack on extracurriculars
Be strategic with it
And make sure it doesn't put too much pressure on you
Also gotta remember to have fun thr first two years
Your Freshman or Sophomore Year you can stack a few ones on to try it out and then assess the ones you're most passionate about and then focus on them
And then develop those as you go through high school
I would recc at least 1 dc class in senior
Hello everybody I have a question related to AP's and Honors
My school don't provide any of these would it affect my admission?
do the colleges in your country have a program to let highschoolers enroll in college courses for free or low cost?
If you're in the US then no, it doesn't. Apply yourself into extracurriculars or, as ico mentioned, try and find dual-enrolment courses
Colleges take your academic opportunities into context. If your school only offers honours and you take those, they see you at the same level as students who took IB or AP classes. If there's no higher level courses, they look more closely at how you apply yourself outside of the classroom
For someone applying as an art major, they'd look at your portfolio and opportunities you took or passed up (i.e. contests)
For someone applying as a political science major, they'd look at involvement in local political campaigns or organisations
etcetc
I’m a little on the fence on whether or not I should take more AP classes Senior year.
I already have AP Psych, Lit, and Stat on my schedule, and want to take Gov/Macroecon and Chem as well.
While I understand that AP Chem is said to be one of the hardest APs, I want to be a little more prepared for college (Forensic Science/Chem major, hopefully), and have a little more background knowledge on the basics before I start taking a bunch of Chem classes.
But taking all of these would mean that 5/6 technical classes would be AP classes. The other two would be Work Based Learning, so I wouldn’t be in school then and would just be going to work after school (which I could just do on the weekends to have more study time during the week).
Guys should I take ap human geography next year? I hear it is useless but I want at least 5 ap classes by senior year
I mean as always, it depends on your interest; I know my sis is super interested in ap human geo (she’s a humanities kid) and plans to take it
I’m a history polysci guy
I also heard it’s super easy so if that’s what you’re going for go for it
hmm yeah history might tie into human geo?
I actually have no clue lol
I think that model un kids like this course but I may be thinking of something else
So, let assume all this become an A+, what 5-6 AP classes would you consider?
Typically, if you’re going to major in something, you should most probably take the ap class for it (if there is one)
anyone here take AP Chem? I am planning on taking it next year alongside honors physics so i wanna know how hard itll be, honors chem was pretty easy for me
If you took honors chem then ap chem should come pretty easily for you
I’m going into AP Chem next year, having taken AP Bio but no honors chem
im gonna do AP Physics and AP Bio together the year after cause bio is the easiest one of the 3 imo
Bio’s frqs are harder than chem’s
But bio isn’t too bad if you understand the basic concepts
But the teacher I have is super difficult, which is why the class is hard for my school
i feel like honors chem was harder than honors bio but i am doing better in it cause i didnt care last year
hi
does anyone elses school have a super selective AP Bio selection?
process
In my school about 40 kids got in and I didn't get in with a 93 semester average
In honors bio?
No, I don’t think so. I remember in 8th grade that kids were automatically enrolled based on Teacher recommendation, but you still be able to switch the course to AP Bio if you wanted
No, at my school you don’t even need to take bio to take AP bio lol
My classes for next year I hope this is good enough
does anyone hv experience w postponing pe from sophomore to snr yr to take another class is it receomended
10th
Take PE as soon as possible. Unless you're okay being in a class full of freshmen.
Lol a lotta schools use powerschool
Doing:
AP Language and Composition
AP Calculus BC
AP American Government & Politics
AP Chemistry
AP Economics (Macro & Micro)
In high school, we only need one year of world language right? Or is more needed?
it depends p sure, for example my school requires 3 years of a language
you can check your school's graduation requirements to make sure
consult the graduation requirements for your graduation year, some high schools send that out when you're an incoming Freshman and 99% of the time they don't change for your graduating class unless it's something mandated by law (i.e. introduction of a new civics credit or smn like that)
If I need more experience with cs to major it in college, and I need a world language credit, and I am in band. Would it be wise to drop band and replace it with a world language class or drop cs?
If you plan on going to college 2 years is recommended
Are my classes good for a freshman?
Honors Alg. 2
Honors Bio (To get into AP you would have to be in the schools middle school which is so stupid imo)
Honors Lit
AP Human Geo
Ty
you could also do the courses at your local community college if you want to continue doing band
that is one of the reasons i had to drop band but i do marching band which makes up for it
Yes! You should add some electives though because that’s only 4 classes lol
Would that just be dropping band at the high school than just signing up for band at the community college?
oh no like take the language/CS in your local community college
i do it through jhu cty (its not local lol) but i have found it to be super effective and im a freshman
Ohhh ok! I'll do it next year. Tysm
I have a question, does TEALS To Computer Science: 1 count as a CTE class?
oh i didn’t include those 😅 my electives are band, health, and Audio Video: Film
I have these classes picked out for my sophomore year, idk what else to pick if more are needed. T- T
World language (idk which to take yet)
Band
P.E.
Biology
Applied Geometry
And some electives too right?
Ap n 8th grade physic will deff be different
Nothing much of a diff just keep up the pace
If u able to study at home n school n take good notes u will ace it
My friend got a D on algebra 1 can he still move up to algebra 2 or does he have to retake
Kind of a dumb question
Has he had a D the whole year
well normally you move up to geometry tho
Mhm
Not too sure but I think 1 c the rest are d
There would be a class thou depending if u failed alg 1
oh okay
Failing especially a math class can push u back
debating between geo (CGF3M) or econ (CIE3M) for grade 10
what are advantages/disadvantages of each
do top-level colleges see duel enrollment or AP classes as more academically rigorous?
Yup!
yall would advise against ap physics for someone who's rlly bad at math right
what
Top level colleges do see dual enrollment and AP classes as more academically rigorous
but do they see AP as more rigorous than duel enrollment?
Not necessarily, they’re both technically college courses and are in theory, equally rigorous to colleges
Most go for APs because it’s easier to take classes at most schools just through high schools instead of dealing with odd scheduling
just had a question about pre-calc
i have the textbook, i've asked a few friends, they all say i can skip it as long as i study
i'm currently in alg-2 and i currently find it a breeze
i was planning on skipping to ap calc ab next year to take a bit more advanced math and i was wondering if this was going to work out
i was also considering skipping to ap chem from biology (but i haven't finalized yet)
my basic question was, is this a good idea? could this work out?
oh yea i was actually planning on doing the same thing (im a freshman) but I didn't go forth with it only because i didn't want to overwhelm self and would rather take the easy A
the only reason i'm doing this is because i want to get all the math courses offered in my school dojne
but i'm ready to challenge myself if it requires that
so i'm not sure
yeah but i'm not sure if htat's going to work out
i don't want tobe taking ap stat and ap calc
same year
ah ok yea its based how comfortable you are with workload... a couple of my friends also said extracurriculars affect the type of classes you will take so it can change per person
hey, honestly in my opinion i would ask a teacher cuz in some schools the precalc curriculum is poorly written and literally just a repeat of algebra 2 (in my school this was the case until they changed the curriculum). So in my opinion i think it would be best to ask a teacher to see the precalc curriculum and compare it to the algebra 2 curriculum
agreed
im in the same situation as u
Analyze functions
Parent functions and transformations
Characteristics of polynomial, power, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions
Applications of trigonometric and circular functions
Trigonometric properties, identities, and proofs
Systems of equations and matrices
Conic sections
Inferential statistics
Correlation and regression
i mean see the only things that seem important (my friend in precalc said the same things)
is trig, limits, and conic
i already know log
nobody that did the same thing as me no, but i have friends in precalc that said it was doable
if you are willing to put in the time and effort i would definitely say go for it
i know someone that's skipped to ap chem without any background knowledge in chem and she has an a
bad part is that she had to study more than 2 hours every day so
i don't think that's doable esp with ap calc and ap euro next year
yeah i will prob do so
i'm doing extra math classes outside of school as well so i should (hopefully?) be okay
i mean if u want you can try to( i know one kid who did it but it was when the precalc curriculum was bad) and if its too hard most schools let u drop down classes after 2 weeks of trying or something
yeah yeah
ye dont do that
i have a friend that just got into mit and he said its best to take regular chem first b4 ap chem
i'm not sure how to reduce my workload from my junior year htough
i'll be taking 6 ap's and 3 of them are considered one of the hardest ap's and others are pretty hard as well
i feel like thats alot of extra work
yeah i'll prob end up readjusting it
oh ok everyones capacity is different
im not that good and i cant handle more than like 4 aps
how many ap's are you taking?
but yeah i prob can't handle more than 4 as well
but i'll be able to tell how much i can handle in 10th year
4
hey guys
Honestly, I’ve been told my a lot of people who are really experienced with math not to skip precalc because it’s really vital for a Calc foundation. You could take precalc over the summer though and jump to AP Calc ab
well yeah i'm going to be self studying out of the text book
and i'm doing extra math classes
That’s different though cause AP chem and chem are very different
No like an actual precalc class
i tried to register for their online summer course but after looking through the course, it was legit just algebra 2
they were going over parabolas and none of it was bout limits
but yes, i'm going to some place called russian school of math
If you live in CA, I can give you some recommendations
i'm not sure if you've heard about them
Lol I know them
Their curriculum seems to be very different
Not a great precalc class then
yes, which is why i was going to talk to the head to get info on what's happening
Cause limits are definitely a focus and parabolas are not
i mean if you have recommendations, i'd love to hear them
Ok, well I live in California, so all the courses I take are UC approved
i doubt they're going to be where i'm at but there's a possibility
Outside of school
i don't really care about whether that goes on my hs app or not
i just want to be prepared enough for calc
And I’ve tried taking precalc over the summer and let me tell it was not easy
i was going to do the princeton review as well
See but taking an actual course will help
yeah true
Alg 2 was a breeze for me too
I highly recommend taking precalc in school because if you’re a sophomore you’re going to get to AP Calc Bc anywyas
Unless you’re super interested in Multi variable Calc
log and trig functions, proofs, conic sections, correlation and regression
that's what my precalc course coveres
I see that
I mean if you’re really interested in math
Go for it ig
You’re like me a year ago
But gl and if you want UC approved courses lmk
ah yeah i wanted to get calc done fast so i could take ap physics c
You could probably take it while taking Calc
But up to you
but yeah i mean i'll prob just end up dropping the course during the first two weeks if i feel like i don't know enogh
That’s what I did over the summer
Massive waste of two weeks and it kind of derailed my summer
Cause I tried to take precalc over the summer
Talk to the AP Calc teacher for sure
Cause mine recommend me to take precalc in school with him but I didn’t listen lol and now I’m in his precalc class
man it's hard coming to a conclusion when you're getting a lot of contradicting infromation
Ik I felt the same way last year
But gl to you and I’m sure you’ll make the right decision for yourself
thanks
Np
Can you skip a course if you went to summer school?
Like a specific course like geom
It depends a lot of the circumstances, but usually less
Yes
For example, if you took geometry at an actual summer school then yes
Do I have to ask my counselor if theyre doing that pogram?
Yeah
Otherwise, you can also take geometry outside of school too
yes, i have been trying to get ahead for 3 years now but the end of year exams always got cancelled cause of covid, I live in NY and we have statewide pass/fail regents exams so if you take those without the class and get an 85 or above you can skip
rn in self teaching algebra 2 while taking geo so i can take ap calc bc
i'm anticipating this as my junior year schedule. is it strong?
AP® ENGLISH LANGUAGE & COMPOSITION
AP® STATISTICS
AP® ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
AP® UNITED STATES HISTORY
SOCIOLOGY*
SPANISH III (still debating on ap)
this is what i am planning for junior year:
AP® English Language and Composition
AP® United States History
AP® Chemistry
Honors Physics
Honors Precalculus
Honors Spanish IV
ooo
i'm horrible at math
i might just do the ap spanish bc i'm online and idk if that will look kinda bad if i'm online compared to everyone else
i want to take all of these as a senior but Idk if itll be too much:
AP® Physics
AP® Biology
AP® Calculus BC
AP® Spanish
AP® English Literature and Composition
Leadership (honors version of our 12th grade history, we have no ap history for 12th)
i feel like thats too much workload but idk
@wheat moon You could double Environmental Science with Biology.
i was thinking of self teaching myself AP Stat because I have no time to fit it in but I do want to take it
i did honors bio freshman year plus i don't think my school allows that my counselor kinda sucks so i don't think she'd let me do it regardless
Ah fair enough.
mine let me self teach alg 2 after trying to get a year ahead for 3 years
i was gonna dual enroll this year but she just kept saying "oh i'll get back to you " 😭
u have the patience and persistence i wish i had
i am stressing about the exam but im staying consistent with the studying
i just need an 85 or higher
yeah its scaled tho, I live in NY so there are Regents exams for every HS class, they decide if you pass or fail the couse too, so if i get 85 on the alg 2 one it counts as completion, here is the scoring key, 86 total points obtainable
oh wow
reason i wasnt able to get ahead for the last few years is they cancelled the exams due to covid
yeah it kinda sucks that they have it required for every hs class
im taking 6 this year
Damn.
Regents in Geometry
Regents in Algebra 2
Regents in Global history and Geography
Regents in Spanish III
Regents in Chemistry
Regents in English
to think i got ahead by just doing summer classes LOL
im not worried about failing any but to graduate with honors which i want to do you need to get a 90 or higher on every one you take
that's so complicated i could never
you can do that too but they run the regents 3 times per year, so you just take the summer regents and that counts
they have one in june, one in august and a mid year one for half year classes in january
and its standard across the whole state
oh and whats even better, if you take an AP class you still have to take the regents exam alongside the AP one
lucky lmao
I am trying to find out how many papers I've done in total over the last 12 years.
(started school at 4, now I am 16)
same, ive lost track of papers at this point
i wasnt abl;e to take ap world this year cause of a schedulign error and im worried colleges will care
what is key stage?
Key Stage 3 have none.
I recommend converting the years I am about to give.
KS1 - Reception to Year 2
KS2 - Year 3 to Year 6
KS3 - Year 7 to Year 9
KS4 - Year 10 and Year 11
KS5 - Year 12 and Year 13 (and Year 14 if doing 3 years in College)
we have kindergarten plus 12 grades for 13 years total before college
kindergarten - year 1
1st grade - 5th/6th (Primary/elementary school)
6th/7th - 8th grade (middle school/ jr high)
9th grade - 12th grade (high school)
college is seperate
Is there a geom pogram too
Im self teaching physic rgn
yes, this isnt just for people trying to get ahead tho, any student taking the course needs to pass to actually get credit
in NY only ^
Ahh ok
23 + 17 = 40
Want to flat out all of the extra
So 40 exams.
ive taken probably over 200 tests
I am self teaching myself Astrobiology every now and again.
(university level at the age of 16)
I am excluding mock exams.
Only official ones.
I am going to self teach AP (college) environmental science, AP (college) Psychology and AP Stat if i can
ohh i see
idk how many ive taken then
we dont have "official" exams besides the NY Regents
but those were canceleed the last 2 years cause of covid
Ah.
So how exactly do you self teach?
I just self teach by listening to university lectures.
im pissed i got a 93.9 overall gpa for 9th grade and now I am getting all 98s-100s but bc i didnt care in 9th that 93 brings down my gpa so much
Khan Academy online, and lots of resources like other teachers note packets provided by my friends who took the class, and review material from the teachers themselves, I need to get a 85 on the state regents to get credit
Damn.
Fair enough.
I did look at Khan Academy.
Didn't look at what's available though.
I think the classes are US based
meh
they have all the US math and science classes (besides HS chem which is a work in progress)
and a good amount of AP classes
Ayo this thing has finance?!
What's the difference?
micro is like the study of individual business decisions and finance while macro looks at the larger picture and economics of governments and nations
Oh fair enough.
Is it possible to double up and do Macro or Micro and Finance over in the US?
yes, either by self teaching or taking both at once
depends on your schedule and what your HS offers
This is why I wish I did go to US High School.
mine doesnt teach macro and micro so i have to self teach
There's a lot more options.
these are college classes of course, there are localized economics classes but they wont help you in college
yes
there are lots of places to get info cause all AP classes are standard across the US
unlike high school ones
yeah there is
i unfortunately missed out on AP world but i plan on taking 9 total APs and maybe self teaching 1 or 2 extra
idk what its called
considering geography (CGF3M) or econ (CIE3M) for grade 10 must pick only one
I was wondering which would be better/easier and which to take overall
I would go with Econ.
It will be effective in every day life.
I submitted econ alr; so okay ig I'll stick with it
ty
do i have to have a really high grade in a class EX English to apply for ap eng
it depends on your school bc mine did either grade or accepted teacher recommendation
is AP Gov hard?
I have a friend who does AP Gov
From what I've heard, it's a medium course in terms of difficulty
Although, that's my interpretation
i wish they offered ap gov at my school
Yeah, at my school there's no ATAR politics and law which is the same as AP gov I assume
In Aus Politics and law is the hardest HASS atar
My school also doesn't do English lit - the hardest English ATAR
@earnest spear I missed out on AP World and didnt care about school in 9th, im in 10th now and onlky in 3 honors classes, next year im going 3 ap and 3 honors and senior year 5 ap and 1 honors, i hope colleges wont care that i never did world tho
we dont have an ap history for senior year so thats why i wish they had ap gov
What's honours
I know AP is the hardest pathway
What are the pathways in the us
its like a step above regular classes, not ap but extra work, the honors classes that im taking are ones where the ap isnt available
chemistry for example, in order to take AP chem you have to take high school chem first, and you can pick regular or honors, honors learns more, is harder and more intensive, and better prepares you if you want to take the ap
yeah since im into STEM im taking AP's and stuff in those courses
also do you think 4 AP's junior year is good enough for MIT if i get a's in all
Australia has 3 pathways - ATAR - uni pathway, general - the pointless pathway, TAFE - pathway for dropouts
i was stuck in the regular pointless math class and I want to go into stem so I am self teaching myself algebra 2 to get to where I should be so i can take ap calc
High school chem in middle school?
no, like high school chem in 10th or 11th, then you can take ap chem the year after
I thought AP was the entire high school duration
oh no
there are certian ap classes
AP classes are actually college classes that you can take in high school
and then can give you a head start in college so you are ahead or help you graduate college early
You can't do that in Aus
And you can't skip grades either
we dont have like courses we can pick the level of each class
like you can take honors math and be 2 years ahead in math but then be on the regular class for history
there is one downside where i live tho
i live in new york so we have statewide "regents exams" and most high school classes have them, its a standardized test and if you do bad on it you get no credit for the whole course
yeah, im not worried about doing bad or anything i want to graduate with honors tho and you need to get 90+ on all of them to do that
I'm sorry what
My school made it a graduation requirement for middle school to pass algarba 1
Us history
Living environment
lucky
i got stuck in a few regular classes and im just getting to where i should be now
In Australia, the prerequisite to do ATAR is to get B's or higher on English, maths, science and Hass, which I did, so I'm doing ATAR, which English - my weak point is compulsory
i am mad cause in 9th grade i got a 93.9 overall average but now i am getting 98-100s so that 93.9 is bringing down my overall a lot
and if i get a 98 overall in 10th 11th and 12th thatll still only be like a 96.5
That's still insanely good, as long as your getting above 75, you have an A
An A is 94-97 in the us
It depends on your teacher
Because at my school, every teacher has different scales
I'm talking about just default grading, we do numbers not letters and all grades are reported into an online program which calculates ur gpa in a number form out of 100
Also, if I don’t have honors at my school but I took APs freshman and sophomore year (these were/ are my schedules), will it still allow me to compete for elite schools?
9th:
Physics 9
Spanish 2
Geometry
Algebra 2
AP Human Geo
English 9
PE
Health/CCR
10th:
AP euro
Precalc
Chem
Bio (taking an online UC approved course)
AP CSP
English 10
Journalism
Spanish 3
Oh, we do our grading based on a 4.0 and 5.0 scale
I’m planning on going for 4 APs next year
Lucky you were that far ahead then, I'm taking geo and alg 2 in 10th :(
But I'm taking multiple aps next hear
Nice!
I really wanted to get to Calc bc by the end of high school but jokes on me because they stopped offering it at my school
Junior year plan:
Honors Precalc
AP Chemistry
AP English Lit
AP US Hist
Honors Physics
Honors Spanish IV
Nice! I’m going for
AP chem
AP Calc ab
APUSH
AP bio
English 11
Journalism
Spanish 4 (over the summer for my seal of biliteracy at school)
That’s heavy
Funny thing I was talking to Theo about
Taking two AP science is
To put it lightly, rough
man i keep forgetting to ask for feedback but my plan for 10th grade is
English 10 HN
AP Chemistry
AP Comp. Sci A
AP Statistics
World History/Geo HN
Good load
no idea how good Comp sci is
I’m taking both Chemistry and Stats
Chemistry is tricky, have you taken chemistry before?
i plan to take chem hn over the summer, and teachers say that it usually prepares you better for ap chem than normal school-year chem
i've done a bit of chem over the summer before but nothing formal lol
Freshman and sophomore year have required little effort so I figured I should probably start putting some I
gotchu gotchu
Looks great! Might want to throw in at least 1 elective though
Yea you just don’t wanna run into a wall that comes with burning out
Had that happen before
ty! i think i got one somewhere but it may just be my math class i forget lmao
Yeah I have burnt out before, but I really really want to take all APs
Alright well if your that eager go for it
Just always remember to ask questions
Get help
Biology isn’t a easy class
Ofc!
Already doing that a bit too much
Yeah I know the teacher super well though and my dad has a background in bio so I think I can manage
They exist for a reason
Of course not, I just happen to irritate some of my teachers at times
If you got a good teacher i makes the course a lot easier
With my questions
Well that usually comes if they are more obvious
You could always try asking classmates then friends
I already know my AP Calc and apush teachers are good
They’re not obvious one though lol
Lol
Because I was talking to my AP euro teacher and math teacher about this and they were saying I ask good question
Questions
You planning to take Calc senior year
Ab junior and hopefully they get bc back by my senior year
Damn I feel so small hearing all this lmao
I only plan on doing like
Ap us history
Ap Calc
Ap statistics
Ap lit
Ap bio
Ap computer science probably
And that's literally it for all of high-school
If they don’t, I’ll just take bc online
Those are great!
Not too bad if you enjoy math
Yeah I love math
AP CSP I enjoyed a ton
I hate it lol
Depends on the person
Doing my create task rn
I'm honestly only taking ap lit bc the school's forcing me too
If you like AP compsci then you’ll like the class
And might never need to touch English until maybe law school
AP lit is easy
Still trying to figure out an idea
AP English classes are kinda jokes tbh
I want to take it senior year
What language
But the teacher is super hard
Python?
It's just the ap test I'm concerned about
What are you trying to make
Oh I’ve heard horror stories about those tests
That’s what I did
Yeah lowest passing ap
Nah my teacher was like use python so
@onyx estuary do colleges like to see an improvement? like will they see me go from half honors and half regular to all ap and honors and grade increase and think its a good thing
Not sure yet
Do you guys use PLTW?
Also, colleges don’t generally care a ton about freshman year and at least at my school, we have a 10-12 gpa
I assume law school doesn't care that Much about your major right
No we use project stem
yeah but i took honors bio (10th grade science) in 9th and true but i missed ap world and was only in honors science and english till next year
What did you take for your sophomore year science?
Dw a lot of people miss AP Euro at my school
thats this year, honors chemistry
my school doesnt offer ap euro
Oh yeah ap world
Then you’re fine, they’ll see the honors chem
Mine doesn’t offer AP world
Something about it not aligning with California’s world history requirements
Schools offen see what your School offers
Yeah
For example my school doesn't offer languages so I probably won't be penalized for it
Just covers a ton
I'm planning on doing honors physics and AP chem next year too, and then AP physics and AP bio as a senior alongside AP calc bc and AP English + spanish
Yeah it does so I love it
You should still take at least 2 years of languages though outside of school
Oh lord, gl your senior year
I'm going to try next year for Spanish the
Language I should know but Dont
That’s good
Cause it’s a requirement at a lot of colleges
Lucky, we have to actually get credits to skip classes
Only exception for that is Spanish
I have 5o pass a regents exam
Yeah.
I know so I'm going to do research on learning Spanish outside of my school
We don’t get to take an exam or anything
😭 guys y’all take regents?
Yup!
Community colleges are generally a good place to look
God dam what class
Nope, I live in California
Algabra 1
Living environment
Us history
I gotta take geometry, us history and English
This year took english
This is too much work
Yeah exams, not regents level classes tho I'm in honors/AP now
I haven’t taken any exams since ms
Most of my classes are pre ap
I was taking alg 1 freshman year 🥶 luckily covid hit
Other then English so that I don't need to touch regents again
Wtf y’all got ap?
I took all that 8th grade
I got no ap
Not fun
hOW
do you take them in 8th grade
I’m scared to take them rn, I’m junior 😭 and a dumbass
School generally offers
Mine did
I go to success academy in nyc it's know for being, excuse my language, fucking extra and collage preparing
We got college preparing too but I don’t do it
Lol I live in a rich kid hippie town where I’m forced to go to an arts school
You gotta apply for it
That’s tuff
Art is worst of thing I’ve ever taken
😭 I can’t draw at all
Not rich hippie
The ironic part is I haven’t taken an art class yet 💀
LOL
It’s performing and visual so I have no plans to ever draw
Literally my county is full of rich people
Performing is much better
Nooo
I’m just going to take product design senior year and call it a day
laughs in theater and dance person
That’s cool
Product design? What’s that
I used to be a dancer for 10 years
And then I was like not doing this anymore
I was forced into dance freshman year
Our theater program is super good
Wasn't bad
It’s where you design prototypes and go through the design process
Sounds too smart
Oooh
Product design
Noooo it’s a basic class
You guys take any ap?
I want ap class, I heard there is something called dual credit
Something like that which boosts ur credit
Yeah if you pass the test at the end of the year you can get college credit depending on where you go
Dc is hell
Which one u wanna take
And the time and money u have
Bc dc cost money
I wanted history but I didn’t get ap class of it
Wait what my friend said he gonna pay bc of dual credit
I know for a fact he didn’t pay for it LMAO
The dual credit would be discounted?
The cost
Is he doing it at a community college?
Bc u will get college credit
Because some community colleges offer courses for free
Damn all that stress to not do college
Rip ig
Future freshman here. Is it worth it to take ap government?
Maybe tell him to try community college
I’m sure he’s aware of his options and will ask for advice if he needs it
Mhm always ask for help when youre in highschool
how are people here taking like ap physics as a freshman
that’s possible?
yea in my school they let people take ap phys in freshman year
ugh the way my district is so strict on what classes you have to take each year makes me so mad
at my scxhool you have to take regular or honors first, and we have to take that after earth sci, bio and chem
oh in my school u just need to take algebra 1 and geometry and you get in
im taking honors chem this year and next year AP Chem and honors physics, then in 12th AP Physics and AP Bio
so i get all 3
my school doesnt let us choose if we go accelerated or not, so in 6th they put me in the normal track and I spent 3 years begging and now im self teaching algebra 2 so I can take Calc BC before i graduate
proper bull
oh lol
our school is pretty leniant with accelerating
they let sophomore take calc 3 and linear algebra
i live in NY so every HS class has a regents exam at the end of the year where you need to pass to get credit, if you take that and pass you can skip but that is ther only way
lol my school doesnt even have ap physics
oh ok
we just have a school placement test that we need to pass to skip
My school has 3 AP science classes but I really wish we had apes and seminar + research
bro what
yea they let me do it without taking pre calc
why is my school so bad
I’m sure your school isn’t that bad
we have apes :D but its the same with my school except we have 2 math aps (not including csp)
Try going to an rich hippie kids arts school when you’re into math and science and a girl of color so you have very limited options
That’s cool! We have 2 math APs too because they cut AP Calc BC
i’m sorry :((
i got to an arts school too but everyone’s poor so it’s pretty down to earth
That’s cool!! I want to figure out a way to take it my senior year
It’s ok haha
if you were a college admissions officer how would this 4 year plan look to you:
(note: regents = regular high school class, honors = high school class to prep for AP, more work and faster pace)
8th:
Honors Earth Sci
Regents Spanish II
9th:
Honors Biology
Honors English 9
Regents Global History
Regents Algebra 1
Regents Spanish III
Design Draw and Production
10th:
Honors Chemistry
Honors English 10
Regents Geometry
self study Algebra II
Regents Spanish III
Regents Global History
Health
Psychology
11th:
AP English Lit
AP US History
AP Chemistry
Honors Physics
Honors Precalculus
Honors Spanish IV
Gov and politics over the summer
12th:
AP English Lang
AP Physics
AP Bio
AP Spanish
AP Calculus BC
sorry for long message
That’s not great but at least it’s a better environment
talk to ur counselor abt vhs!
my school does it for any classes they dont offer
I think your senior year schedule and junior year schedule will most likely swap more or less
nice
why? the classes in senior year come after jr ones
I have and that’s how I’m taking normal bio! But it’s more fun taking classes in person yk
oh word your school doesnt do bio??
Because senior year is more of a busy time because of college apps so most people make junior year their hardest year
it's basically a requirement here :o
Also it’s not recommended going from Precalculus to Calc bc
at our school regents precalc prebs for calc ab and honors preps for calc bc
i dont meet the prerequisites for hard classes my junior year (which is next year D:) so i basically HAVE TO take the hardest schedule my senior year
We do don’t worry haha and it’s a graduation requirement here too. Pretty much, they switched the order of the science classes from bio, chem, physics to physics, chem, and bio so we’re at the stage where all the juniors and freshman are taking physics and sophomores are taking chem, so there’s only 1 bio class
Ahh ok
makes sensee
That’s not fun, maybe you could do it over the summer? I’m also going to be a junior this year!
so they basically forced u guys to take it on vhs?
how do i look into taking courses over the summer?
No, they put all the kids who need to take it to graduate in that 1 bio class and are making me wait until junior year for bio, but I didn’t want to wait lol
oh makes sensee
i wanna do vhs, but i have to go through a lottery at my school and only 10 people get to take it in the school
Talk to your counselor for sure. I live in California, so every class I take has to be UC approved, so I found a few sites that let me take it for fee while giving me credits that are UC approved
That sucks
also re the prerequisites this is why #💡ㆍacademic-advice message
Maybe you could take precalc and Spanish over the summer to strengthen your junior year schedule and lessen the senior year one?
so i could take ap spanish as a jr and no spanish as a senior?
Yup!
wait thats SO smart
another thing, im a varsity swimmer, 3 hour practices after school and 1 hour before school every day, idk how much that will cut into work
During the summer?
wait thats not possible at my school .... my friend already discussed w her spanish teacher abt the same thing and they wouldnt let her
no school year, idk how much that will cut into the time im spending on the other aps
I mean, if you’re doing varsity swim senior year, you’re going to face the same issue anyways
true
^
It’s best to talk to your counselor about it first
I talked to my counselor and I’m going to take Spanish 4 over the summer via community college
And sem 2 of biology
i wish i cared sooner
i am not very ahead compared to the rest of people
You’re still on a fantastic track
Don’t compare yourself
^
Colleges care less about whether you’re ahead by 2 years or 3 years cause it’s all the same to them
i've had basically only 1 honors course so far and i'm a sophomore
Just challenge yourself with courses YOU want to take and will be related to your major in college if you have an idea of what it is
We have no honors at my school
So I just do AP
just two levels?
if the courseload is too much next year with swim im planning on dropping ap english and history cause I want to go into stem + everyone does those and i feel like doing the science ones that not as many people take would look better
but I want to try to do them all
i'm based in massachusetts which is very helpful for my admissions
good colleges here
That’s a good plan, I wanted to try that but my parents are not letting me take 5 next year
english is good for stem!!
Yeah I’m based in California and we have the UCs which are awesome
I’m aiming for Davis, Berkeley, or la
Irvine has very unique majors too which is awesome
ooo my dad went to berkeley
That’s so cool! Our family friend goes there
i plan on majoring in comp sci or similar
my friends are telling me to take spanish 1 and spanish 2 in the same year. should i listen to them?
Unless you’re a native Spanish speaker, don’t
ok
Me?
monke
almost freshmen
ah
alr ty
Me dropping after Spanish 4 before junior year 😅
Only reason I even did it is because I get a seal of biliteracy
Even though I’m already fluent in two languages
ooo which?
any tips on how to get better at spanish
I think I want to go into premed
Listen to Spanish in your free time
speak to others in spanish
like friends or parents
English and a South Indian language called Telugu
if they dont understand you can also explain
Basically, lots of practice
Ty!
i speak fluent taiwanese mandarin
Probably still can!
so as i have already said, I am currently in the regular spanish class and it sucks, we dont do speaking, listening or reading excersises and our tests are just vocab, I am outraged cause its not really helping me and I want to take ap spanish
but i cannot understand writing
What grade r u?
also afraid the exam does not accept my dialect
10th
What type of Spanish r u taking (Spanish 3, Spanish 2, etc)
K
Oh yeah you definitely need verbal and listening for AP Spanish
Alright
100%
i'm also taking reg spanish and i am recommended for honors next year i think if u take honors next year then ap senior year will work
thats what im doing
I suggest taking Spanish 4 next yr then AP Spanish
In senior
Since AP Spanish is tough
i was supposed to be in honors 3 this year but scheduling error, thats also why im not in ap world
Cause those are all part of the AP exam
that sucks :(
they arew all part of the NY regents exam too which you have to take after the hs class to even get credit
As side notes
Maybe you could get a tutor?
^
Or learn from duolingo (Ik it sounds daunting but even 15 mins everyday can rly improve ur Spanish skills)
Also change ur language settings
i know the sapanish i just wish my teacher would have us practice more, the type of people in the class im in is not the brightest and i dont think they will even pass the high school exam
Duolingo is just for vocab really
Yea, but vocab is crucial for speaking, listening, and writing
Well, not much you can do about it other than talk to your counselor really
can i change disc lang to spanish but when i type in spanish itll be english for everyone else?
I definitely agree! But the o said that they do a lot of vocab already
no
it doesnt translate your messages
i got vocab down, we do less than honors but i know everything she taught
ah ok
That’s awesome
it's things like Today at 9:57 PM it'd say Hoy instead
You can keep an English keyboard, but read others messages in Spanish
I think
I know other platforms have that option
But idk abt discord
just changed disc to spanish
Hello
also what do you think i should be focusing on from here on in hs? collecting aps or is there a different way? bc i've been having cp classes these two years
i'm trying my hardest to get into a good school
what grade are you in cindy
10th
How many APs have you taken?
ok, im in the same boat as you that nice to know lmao
Because top schools acceptances usually take about 7-13 throughout high school or the equivalent
Like dual credit
10th
yeah but ive been taking mostly regular classes 9th and 10th so i need to step up my game
Mmm
That’s good!
but i will have only a minimum of 3 by the end of junior year
my 9th grade gpa is gonna mess up my gpa too, 93.9 in 9th but now i get 98s-100s
Ofc many schools don’t let kids take Aps in 10th and 9th
i almost failed 9th grade because i was rly depressed lol
I’ve taken 4 collective at this point
That’s ok
It won’t
I’m sorry :(
Blue, what grade r u in?
as long as colleges know that i will be on track to take and finish all 8 i'll be okay right?
i just hope the jump to all honors/ap from 2-3 honors wont be that bad
But you’re doing even more now and colleges see the improvement!
10th
Yes
it's all good, i'm bettered however i'm trying to pick things back up
It’ll be tough
But u can do it!
Hard work pays off
Ngl, you’re probably going to really struggle at first
HEY i'm the exact same
But keep working hard!!
here i'll list my plan/coursework
yea good luck
I know you can do it <3
one thing i hate, my HS grades ap and honors the same as regents (regular) so their feelings dont get hurt, they dont weigh the ap score higher
Lol colleges recalculate your gpa anyways so it won’t matter much
Colleges recalculate goa
Gpa
For that reason
All on a standardized scale
so a 100 in a regular class will still do better than a 95 in AP Chem, and i know colleges do but my parents care about my hs gpa
Also
Ur raw score doesn’t matter
90-100 is still a 4.0
Whether u get a 99 or a 90
^
i thought it is anything above an A-
and i got an A- in regents alg 1 and honors bio last year
Yes
my school is offering 21st Century Global Geography Honors & AP World History so basically split into two semesters for freshmen. Should i take world history honors or attempt a Ap class in freshmen year?
Including A-
oh really?
freshman: all cp classes, i took most honors for basically the first term though
sophomore: all cp (chemistry, spanish, english, history) and one honor which is algebra ii
junior: all honors (spanish, history, precalc) and 3 aps (lang, apes, csp)
senior: all aps (lit, calc ab, stats, world, spanish)
if you manage your time well you could probably do ap world
and in this context cp means college prep (normal people)
ap world in one sem??
wait what
I haven’t taken AP world, but I have taken an AP freshman year and it’s a really rewarding experience if you put effort in!
how much hw do aps give
^ how much should i reserve per class at night
Senior year looks stressful 😅
Depends on the teacher
yea... easier said than done LMAO
Really depends on the teacher
Facts haha
not too sure but it says "21st Century Global Geography Honors (Fall) & AP World History (Spring)"
Please don’t
It’s a sophomore class generally
yeah i know that i missed it this year
my school only lets us take ap world and psych as a senior because there are requirements that cp AND honors students will take through junior year to complete
yeah thats one of the main reasons am thinking of taking it
I took my first AP in a semester and I learn nothing and had to self study the entire second semester, so I would not recommend
Skip it
ok
am thinking about it but am not too sure, i know a couple of people who took ap classes in freshemn and they said its pretty time consuming
requirements to graduate are world history i, early american, and modern american
Depends on the teacher but generally is
is spanish normally in military time? it says 22:08 instead of 10:08
am gonna go research on its passing rates and all of that stuff and what courses i would need to take
but thank you for the help
theo how much time do you commit to varsity swim? i was wondering bc i wanted to incorporate some ecs into my daily schedule
Passing rates are helpful, but talk to the teacher and get more info about the course. Yw and good luck!
the ap world pass rate is a little deflated because it is usually peoples first ap class and they are not used to the workload
I play varsity basketball and easily 10-20 hrs per week
It depends on the week though
4 hours a day, 3 after school, 1 before
- boy scouts on tuesdays and sometimes wednesdays
speaking of passing rates!! i decided not to take apush since i do not want to be taking it aside lang.. but i'm having second guesses bc i just heard that the teacher has the highest exam pass rate in the school
omg u guys are crazy
Girl Scouts thankfully isn’t taking too much of my time rn but I have to start my gold award soon and that will be time consuming
Apush is definitely worthwhile!!
nobody at school talks abt scout activities i guess it's not that popular here
I love history so much and I heard apush is easier than AP euro, so I’m quite excited
Girl Scouts is kind of dead here other than the little kids
i've already bothered my teacher AND my counselor about yes apush and no apush
they're telling me don't do it you're having a shit ton of work already !! but bro :( i like history
Omg I did that last year when I tried to take AP chem or AP bio
Sadly, they’re sometimes right 😭
rly?? were they compliant afterwards tho
OKAY also my friend who has the apush teacher rn said that she is really bad at teaching
but idk whether or not to judge off that since she is taking early american honors
she may just treat different classes differently
My counselor was completely chill with it, but the teacher didn’t let me
Regular chem is a waste of time though because I already know everything
I would talk to a few different people
i'm taking regular chem rn :(( the teacher babies us TOO much
my classmates all have horrendous grades but i have a consistent 97-100
Same!!! I love her to death though and I get to take AP bio with her so I’m really excited
In our class, 75 or above in an A 💀
i was the only one to score over 90 on the midterm DDDD: it's not great for me that i was put in cp instead of honors
unfortunately eagle scout carries a lot of weight but girl scouts dont get any recognition
:(( I’m sorry
ah ic
That’s such a lie
Colleges care even more when they see gold awards
really?
Cause there’s barely any older Girl Scouts
Yeah, it’s a huge deal
ah makes sense, thats good
i hope my admissions officers will understand my situation... i showed bad performance last year so i was put in regular classes this year BUT i am showing overperformance all year this year
And only 1 million Girl Scouts have gotten the gold award since 1916 so big deal
i'm capping off in history, spanish, chemistry, AND computer science
They will see the improvement, don’t worry
they like improvement but i am in the same boat, i wish i started caring in 8th
They know Covid year was a tough year
i really hope they keep that in mind... people might put the pandemic behind them before 2024 comes
i did worse cause i was only in school half the time, they made us do half virtual
We were full virtual until April of last year
They won’t, a lot of people will be writing about the pandemic the next few years
i do think that the improvement in grades + courseload will be a good essay topic in an app
