#course-selection

MIT generally wants you to take the most rigorous courses you can
Did you talk to your counselor about APs? Most schools rules for courses aren't always hard or fast
What AP's tho?
advanced placement
Depends on your school's offering
college level classes
The school I go is a pretty rich school its, like 9th in the state
He knows what they are
He's asking which ones
oh im stupid 💀
Science ones I cant really get cause I need to finish either chem or biology accel first
Math AP's arent till pre-calc
Well, you probably wanna see what they let you take in 9th if they do, maybe depending on your scores in middle school they might
i cant help here, cuz my school only offered 6 lmao
but your school prolly only offers the easiest ones to 9th graders
so take those to build good study habits
Yea ofc, APs are on college level topics
and an understanding of how ap tests will look and feel like
even if they arent related to your predicted major
ofc dont do it if you know you hate the subject
but challenge yourself
MIT likes you to take all APs, not just stem
They like you to show initiative and dedication in everything, curricular or extracurricular
All of the AP classes I want need prerequsites and my grades in middle school (Atleast before 8th) werent great ngl
does mit want a variety of aps compared to other schools?
What
Well you could say that
MIT dosent accept a lot of AP's, Im pretty sure they only accept Science and Math AP's
i feel like smt like dartmouth or harvard would have a greater emphasis on a broad range of topics
Colleges don't want APs for the benefit of you getting credit
They want you to take hard courses
while mit likes specialized students
that is true
No?
You could be a published writer and that could be your MiT hook
So im pretty much screwed cause I cant take any AP classes in freshman? https://cdn.discordapp.com/emojis/837315630008631326.webp?size=48&name=e_sobing&quality=lossless
No
But did you ask your counselor?
If they're offered to students who ask in your school, then that might look bad in your application, not if they aren't
Accept them for what?
Ofc not for course credit
Wait course credit dosent matter?
They're gonna look at your grade transcripts, not just the scores you submit
no
It matters after you get in
ap test scores barely matter for admissions too
the grade in the class is a lot more important than the ap score
So what AP classes should I take in freshman? (Im gonna ask my counsel bout this)
take what your consoler recommends
we dont know you or your school well enough to suggest things
they will
ok thx
I dont know if I could handle AP classes in freshman atleast tho
And, yeah, APs in your freshman year aren't the end of the world
plus freshman year grades are the least important
For MiT, you need to worry about extracurriculars way more
like i got into an ivy with a C in my freshman year in a non honors class
U got into a ivy?
dont overthink things too much
dartmouth class of 2028 baby
?...
What major
im graduating from dartmouth in 2028
What's so ? about that lol
meaning i start in 2024
engineering and premed
your school prolly mandates it
no it dosent but college wise
It doesn't mandate any subjects?
by core subjects do you mean english, math, science, history?
Yes all 4 are required till 11th in my school
https://mitadmissions.org/apply/prepare/highschool/
Ofc other colleges have other requirements
wait im confused what's the question then
if you cant chose to do it or not
After 11th grade should I take history, math, etc
you'll know once you get there
dont gotta plan this far in advance
but if you are going into stem, math will 100% be needed
science prolly too
You want to take the most rigorous ones you can, or the ones related to your major
Courses aren't everything for MiT
You'll probably have access to quite a few APs in senior year
So choose the ones you can take and that you want
But you aren't exactly in senior year rn
So Senior year is the most important?
junior is for academics
senior year you will be doing college applications
probably fewer ap classes
maybe the same as junior
but you should be taking the most ap classes in your junior year
but make sure to take time to study for the SAT or ACT
MIT is test mandatory i think
just like dartmouth fr
Why is high school so stressfull 😦 I never had to actually study till this year
Let me reiterate
and dont sacrifice your mental or physical health for school
mit not worth being unhappy or unhealthy
bro pulled a 180 💀
They are,
But also not
What do you think will happen if you have AP Calc available but take the lowest level maths class you can to graduate
bro is tryna confuse the competition 😭 😭
Now what do you think will happen if you take AP calculus
I am taking pretty much the highest classes i can tho
except spanish
I hate spanish
Screw spanish
Yes Im not saying you aren't
Take the hardest, or near hardest courses you can handle, and don't worry about courses any further unless you can't handle the courses you're taking
colleges just want to see that you are ambitious and can survive in their school
They're important, forming the baseline for your application, but they're not the end of the world
also if u have questions your guidance consulor should be the first person to ask
- they're knowledgeable
- they're gonna be writing a recommendation letter for you when you're applying to college, so it's good to have them familliar with you
I dont have on yet thats why im here. Im in 8th grade
how do you pick classes?
We get recommendation letters from our 8th grade teachers
We CAN chose higher classes if we wish but they had to be approved by the dean first
should i take ap physics 1 instead of ap seminanr
Yes
i’m a rising freshman . i have finished advanced algebra(algebra 2) and geometry b in 8th grade. should i take ap physics 1?
ap physics in freshman is rigorous, but if you think you can do it go for it!
but idk how hard it rlly is. i’m not sure if i’m ready or not, since pple are saying it very difficult. I think i’m a fast learner, and i’m usually understanding new topics in any subject fairly quickly. I don’t know if ap physics 1 is rlly that hard, so should i still do it
i’m also very enhanced at math compared to my classmates
it's your choice at then end of the day
if you think it's too hard, then you could just wait until sophomore and take an easier ap in freshman?
hi so im becoming a upcoming freshmen, i have no clue on what classes i should take in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade for the upcoming years
my major is computerscience/web development
can anyone help me like choose what classes are best fit for me
i think my freshmen year sched is this
9th grade/lit honors
Geometrey Honors
Spanish ||
AP Human Geography
Biology Honors
Intro to Computer Science(elective)
might also take 1 more elevtive
Do you have your PE credit?
pe and health im taking online
How do you take PE online???
So like is PE not a part of your schedule?
idk our school gives credit for PE and health online
nope
it gives me space for 2 more electives
yall know what are the best dual enrollment classes to take as a sophomore?
don’t let others tell you what you can and can’t do. Your not them
are honors classes good to have?
ap's are better, but honos are still pretty good
thank you
i think i might try honors bio then
it’s easy
honors bio is hugely resourced around memorization
you’ll be fine
it depends on ur teacher and schools and stuff
no need to flex
i was never a science person
how
true
Honors bio and honors chem are easy, though chem is significantly more complex and math related. With enough dedication you can achieve whatever score you want
i say if you’re not used to rigorous courses pick the subject you are the best at and do an honors or ap off of that - tho i wouldn’t recommend ap classes until you’re absolutely CERTAIN that you can handle honors
honors chem was so fun
no teacher sucked
hated it 🎿
you hated chem?
bud
💀
this channel is for giving advice not flexing 😭
nah i was just showing it’s easy
i mean lowk everyone in my class was doing just fine
real shit
furthermore it depends on the teacher and the school itself
debatable but 🦐
no bio, i loved chem:
nice
furthermore, 🤓 👆🏻
real
ok high schooler
What do you want to major in?
^^ and also what they offer
business
dual enrollment is for getting credits early but tbh should be for \
u could do
like
excel
business management
idk what u have
business english
i didn't know there was courses like that
the ones they offered me is like com 1 and math and stuff
Business administration?
we cant give advice since its up to you
just choose courses that are relevant to ur interests + major
Yeah what he said
and that u can balance with ur regular academics
okay
Also check to see if you credits transfer to your desired colleges
Especially out of state colleges
Okay
i will check that
wait but do we still have to take core classes for dual enrollment, like compostion 1 or algebra or nah
dual enrollment isnt like regular school classes
ur able to take any classes u want
with meeting the reqs
it depends on ur school and the dual enrollment college ur at
u have to do research yourself
yeah the school gave me a paper with a list of course i can take and the reqs
yeah jst research it and maybe talk to any other peers that did it before or will do
mhm
im in algebra 2 rn in freshman, im taking ap precalc next year, so do i take ap calc ab or bc in junior, cuz i also want to do ap stats in senior
I don't know what degree to choose. And I'm a junior I high school I'm running out of time lol 😭
does anyone know if these classes are okay for freshman year?
world history honors
english I honors
geometry honors
biology honors (got recommended into ap bio though)
heritage spanish 3 honors
intro to business
consumer management
pe/health
speech as a summer class
In high school?
yea
okay tysm !
In highschool I want to take health science and Comp Sci, but i dont have enough space, do yall think i can take Comp sci as a program outside of school and it can still be a good report on a college resume
Im planning on taking health science in high school
and take comp sci as a program outside of highschool
What are your interests?
And academic strengths?
If you are math and science centered, try medical sciences or programming
If you are more arts and history centered, try a liberal arts or history degree
You can now isolate this list further with your own interests
Ex: If you like video games, maybe go into game/app design instead of biomed
Not recommended, unless it’s some sophisticated program at like a college or online
You think i should take a sophisticated program at a college
because comp sci wont fit on my 4 year plan
actually
maybe
but just asking just in case
I recommend taking pe over the summer if you can, it will free up more room in your schedule. Also, you cannot take AP biology until you have taken chemistry and biology, so probably your junior year.
that’s not true u can definitely take ap bio before chem
kids in my school take ap bio freshman year
Well that’s true for my school I guess 🤷♂️
if u want to go to an ivy take ap bio
you should be taking the hardest classes ur school offers
well unless i guess u hate science
You should know basic biology before you go into an advanced course, but that’s just my opinion
Well teachers are different in different schools lol
well i’m just saying the course isn’t hard
doesn’t have anything to do with the teacher
Curriculum changes among states, so it’s a different experience for everyone.
Plus it’s not like one ap course gets you into an Ivy League lol
actually doesn’t because ap is standardized
ofc but it’s good to take them
i never said that one ap course gets u into an ivy
also i think that if they don’t like science they shouldn’t take it
NEED SOME ADVICE..
What will you say to someone who's confused for persuing the course for a better future..(I'm running out of time and I don't wanna select my degree based on peer pressure and all..)😭
i dont think my school lets us take pe over the summer, but pe and health are only for one semester. i was thinking of taking ap bio for junior year. i was gonna do honors bio this then and then chemistry honors next year
yea ik and thats just what i was worried about. im taking all the hardest classes i can besides ap bio this year. i will do it another year, i just dont want to overwork
Does this depend on the major
for instance, business majors shouldn’t really be focusing on science classes, rather math and ap economics classes
yea and i want to become a business major so thats why im taking the highest classes i can besides ap bio and then intro to business and consumer management
Just take AP Bio, colleges appreciate if you take tougher courses
What are you interested in?
Are you planning to take AP chem as well?
i dont think my parents will let me 😭
also i will take it but probably junior year
well im going to take chemistry honors next year but if i get into ap chem then i might ? i think its best to take all the ap classes i can so i probs will
How many APs does your school offer
ill check one second
AP chem freshman year is not even with it
you're going to tank
not good for resume
They meant sophomore
What
Yea
They're talking about taking chem honors or ap next year
c/o of 2028 is 8th grade
i am in 8th grade rn
Yes
but this year im going to high school
They're goingbto freshman year
also my school does kinda have a lot of aps but you can only do most of them sophomore year+
You can plan 2 years ahead

You might be able to talk to your counselor to change that, it's worth a try at least
i think its okay if i take the classes im taking this year
i dont think its going to ruin all my chances of getting into a good school if i dont take an ap class freshman year
You're instead going to ruin them by taking too hard classes and not doing enough ECs or burning out
im def gonna look at ecs
i want to join some clubs this year and then if i dont like them im drop them after 1-2 weeks
and theres like an event in about 10 days where you can see the extracurriculars
but i have a list of ones i want to look at
i second this
i have no ideas though 😭
thats for u to find out
I think that’s a really smart decision
I wanna pursue computer science engineering, can I have some overall advice on that course?
Im currently persuing commerce in secondary high ,can I still have a career in computer science engineering?🤔
I am a current 8th grader, how long should i wait before I purchase a SAT book? If I should soon, which ones do you reccomend
do it in 10th grade or sometime close to that. use khan academy for now, you really dont need a book
i wanna major in statistics, but im only a 9th grader. idk what classes to take when i get there so. geometry: 98 history 1500-present: 93 biology: 86 english: 83 career prep: 95 act prep: 98
How hard is financial literacy usually along with computer programming 2?
Doing those classes and 1 resource math and 1 resource English 12 and I don't gotta do science
9th grade, prep for it and take psat, then in 10th take sat
different schools have different classes
Oh ok
need a suggestion
im taking my course selection for high school
i put 2 aps, AP euro history and AP human geography, is that enough APs?
also, i heard debate 1 is hard, should i take it or no? because the debate students said "if you care about your GPA dont take debate"
also, im skipping biology through a test so should I take adv chem or on level chem? i heard it's also hard
have a question - just how difficult is ap lang and is it worth taking it?
I am not personally knowledgeable; but i have heard its one of the most practical for skills like essay writing
I just had a question. As I am about to become a freshmen in high school, I wanted to ask what the best AP classes for a 9th grader would be if I want to do something in Biotech or Biochem?
yeah, that part i know... its just like my school is making me think twice because it has the hardest ap lang curriculum in the whole district
AP Bio, AP Chem, AP CSA/CSP wouldn’t be a bad idea depending on specifically what you wanna do
If you want to go pre med
AP Physics would help too. But ofc, don’t take these all freshman year. They’re options open to all 4 years. But probably the computer sciences would be good starting classes, then work your way up thru the years to things like bio and chem
there usually are none to a few freshman options so what can you do
Does anyone know if biostatistics is considered a major in med school?
Or when do you take it?
guys I am confused on what courses to take
I am going to monta vista as a freshmen
I am interested in robotics
since when can u take this in freshman
like no
the only frehsmans science classes are APES and ap biology half the timr
I never said you had to take it freshman year
And every school has their own requirements
Med school doesn’t rlly have majors
So what is biostatistics considered then?
/when do you take it
It’s a major you can choose for college
Undergrad
i want theoretical physics extracurricular
unless they dont have extracurriculers for theoretical physics
Hey guys nice to meet yall i just moved from india to canada and have no idea about the undergraduate college or uni stuff can someone help me explaining what is what ,i have no where else to reach out thanks yall
Then start it
Should I take AP physics without taking AP calculus concurrently
I’m a sophomore
People r telling me not to
Which physics
1, 2, or C
1
So after highschool there’s two types of colleges
- Undergrad is the first college you go into and you get your associates degree (2 years) or your bachelor’s degree (4 years)
- Grad school is the college you go to after you finish your undergrad. You reapply to another college but this time for your Master’s degree (2 years) (after your masters, you can further your education by getting a PHD too (rare and extremely hard/taxing to get))
Thanks a lot man you are a lifesaver
You’re welcome
The whole system was a bit complicated to understand when I first came to America too
Btw if i may go into medical to be a doctor how do i do that
Oh
Okay so you know how there’s undergrad and grad now right?
Med school is technically a type of grad school
But in this case you go for around 4 years and get your MD or Doctor of Medicine
Yup
yeye
Ohk thanks man
also you dont have to have a specific major for med school
Ok
i have friends who are english majors that got accepted in med school
There’s also DO or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine too
Oui
ofc
hi i've heard that it's important to take minimum 3 years of a world language in school for top colleges, and I am currently taking spanish 3, but I didn't get a good grade in spanish 1 in 8th grade and am planning to have that waived or something, so i'm not sure if i should take spanish 4 next year or not take it because if I don't take spanish 4 it makes some room for better classes
Your Spanish 1 is a high school credit class right?
neko you missed your story at the discussion https://cdn.discordapp.com/emojis/1172184404521652334.webp?size=64
yea
What did they say?
if the other classes would be better for your application or more relevant to your interests, i would drop spanish
skipped i think
Or just read it once
Skipped
dont worry abt your spanish 1 grade, i got a C in spanish 2 my freshman year and still got into selective schools
i was gonna ping you, but 'twas already gone
That’s fine lol, I just wanted to write something
i mean it's for AP Chem and I'm a CS kid but im taking honors chem as a sophomore and i don't wanna take a gap year
is spanish 4 honors?
yes
just like how you skipped your chem class?
My high school allows 9th graders to take nearly any AP class
Oh wow
Other than csa or crop (or taking summer math courses in the summer to go into ap calc) u can’t rlly take any aps in 9th and 10th grade for my school
If I took Spanish 1 and 2 in middle and take 3 in freshman does that mean I don’t have to do it anymore
depends on the school you are targeting but i think most schools are fine with 3 years
Didja talk to your counselor about APs?
I wanna join the NJROTC program when I enter highschool. Is it a good ec?
Yes and no
Can show great leadership
if all of my electives in all 4 years are CS based does that mean i literally cant escape a cs degree
I just realized I was in the wrong section
But its a huge time commitment if you really want to utilize the opportunity. Meaning you really wont be able to do anything else outside of school
yikes
It also depends on program to program some jrotc programs are amazing while others suck. And colleges often view jrotc as a program to help struggling/bad kids
Oh
if all of my electives in highschool are cs based does that mean i cant major in anything other than computer science in college
Considering you’re in middle school it might be worth it to give it a shot and see how the program is in 9th grade. If the program is good and you see you will be able to grow stay till 10th grade or something like that, depending on you and the program you might get a lot of leadership opportunities
No
for freshman year should i continue with spanish and take span 2 or should i switch ‘back’ over to french since i took it till 6th grade but when i moved my ms didn’t have it. basically spanish 2 or french 1
What do you like
spanish 2
Youve already completed 1 year of spanish so only 2-3 more years of spanish left
in my county you need 2 years to get the credit idk how it is for u but i say spanish 2 if ur counties rrules are spanish
Vs starting over with french and having 3-4 years left
yeah for my school it’s 3 years of language so i might just stick with spanish
I think it varies, i live in the us and its 3 years
Also note some colleges like jhu require 4 yrs of lang
true
im goinna take spanish 3 in freshman and switch over in 10th
I was lucky because I was able to start taking spanish 7th grade so i was able to finish 4 years by 10th grade
Why would you do that
because i did 3 years
Wdym by switch over
Why
bc i did 3 years starting from 6th to now
so why not continue?
I understand that, but why would you want to take another language? What value does that provide
easier gpa
Um yo I need tips for drama/theater 😭
if you take french 1 its basically 6th grade french
gamefying gpa is not worth it
aos know that it's easy
showing commitment will look better as it's greater course rigor
Yeah if youre trying to go to t20 colleges they would rather you take harder classes than take another language to help your gpa
i comitted for 4 years thats good enough
took spanish 1 in 6th spanish 2 pt 1 in 7th spanish 2 pt 2 in 8th and then spanish 3
do spanish 4
so compared to a average person i comitted the same amt
Sure but taking another language does not help you at all if you want to go to another college
6th grade spanish does not count as high school credit
ya it does
every language is a highschool credit
im hust saying its 6th grade spanish bc it is 6th grade spanish
if youre gonna shoot for top schools spanish 4 or ap spanish will be better than surface french
its just called french 1
and id also suggest going into spanish more through a club or spanish honor society to it provides more depth to your personality
Imo if theyre really not interested doing that is a stretch
No
.
why is your school so into cs 😭
its the school for IT
i applied and got in
i also got into the ib school
which do i choose
^
Unless the it school is prestigious or something
unless u are super passionate abt IT
you would need to compete with the other sweaty cs kids which would mean ur applicatio would have to be crazy compared to public school cs kids
its a public school
True
both are public schools
some public schools are sweatier than others
but given what you've told us, id say IB unless you are super into cs
yea bc if i got the it school i think im locked into a cs degree
but at ib i have to take a arts elective
no youre not
i wouldnt say that youre locked
but if you realize you dont like cs
it's gonna be a rough 4 years
they should have a variety of classes to pick from right
idk i think so
Imo you should email them or just look up their websites to find out
Btw wouldn't an IT school just be one with required maths science and cs coursework
And an IB one which offers IB courses
(Just from my understanding of the terms, and the reason I'm saying this is to know what you mean by them)
yeah the cs scoursework
What courses would you take if you had every single on available
Just like topics and general subjects
this is the it ione
That sounds very restrictive and has pretty few APs
Ofc ivies wouldn't mind if your school doesn't offer too many, but still
Yeah there's 5
Also like someone said, it'd be bad for your gpa
And class rank
Not gpa I mean
Well yeah
If you take AP electives or IB electives then your weighted gpa as calculated by the uni you apply to will be higher
its not mentioned there is a lot of aps
science english and histoory have their own aps
and math
Ok so that isn't an exhaustive list of the courses at the school right
Cus it looks pretty concrete
Is OnRamps chemistry difficult and does it translate well to AP chem
That literally lists those out
Why does that matter tho
I'm literally talking about other APs, not maths and cs
AP science, ap history/ social science, other APs
Plus like if it has them and you wanna go there, go ahead
should i take ap csp or dual enrollment as a sophmore. I want to major in cs or electrical engineering
we take ap science and historu
AP CSP isn't that great, do you have CSA available
Sounds like a great school then
No
its literally the EASIEST ap
What would be a reasonable 3rd AP for a slightly above average student?
(AP) US History
(AP) Physics (1.5)
— (AP) CSA or Psychology or Stats —
(DE) Pre-Calc
(Honors) Chem
(Honors) English
(3) Spanish
Astronomy II
Good to note my intended major is either physics and astronomy or neuroscience
and it gives u a free gpa boost
If they're going for dual enrollment are they looking for a gpa boost?
Doesn't dual enrollment not count towards your gpa
Either that or I'm confusing that with dual credit or smth
Or im just wrong entirely
I am taking that rn
That's literally the whole point of ap
Well, as arctic said, CSP is good for a gpa boost
You might be bored by the topics tho it's literally just theoretical programming isn't it
yea for most aps all the CS courses most colleges dont accept
Ah alright
Well I'm pretty sure that's what the point was supposed to be
Oh you're in CSP rn?
im thinking of just self studying that
I thought you said CSA
nah my friend is
self studying aps is dumb dont do it especially for the CS courses
Yeah, why'd you want to take it, GPA boost or the course itself?
idk the credits and the score
Then don't self study csp
but wont a dual enrollment course give me a bigger course
csp is a gpa booster nothing else best believe the colleges are NOT accepting it a]s a college credit
No college would take CSP anyway, it's literally not relevant
literally just a gpa booster
It'll look good on apps, might be interesting topic wise, and might give you credit
But still, extracurriculars are more important app wise
ya ofc
im just gonna self study csp for the awards they give cause in my school if u take all cs courses u get some award
If you self study it will that count as taking it?
ik my schools weird
What kind of award?
ada lovelace award
A GPU or just a plaque
I'd rather get an ada Lovelace GPU
lol
bruh
I'm not from the US ok
wait
it doesnt matter if its a regnal award
lol
It feels good to have 😔
Then don't 💀
idc imma just do it anyway
Well be sure to ask
Don't waste money on applying and then be told "no award no credit
Haha non"
ya but its an ap still and i get college credit
It's 300 usd to apply to an AP where I live
But same in concept
No
CSP isn't any college credit
But colleges don't care about algorithms
bro
algorithms are a major part of cs
cs would literally not exist without algorithms
also i dont think csp teaches algorithms
Idk about csp at all tbh
Idk why I'm talking
not unless your school has a special thing that grants credits
Go ahead and take it if you want lmao
but you wont get a grade
ya ik
true true
it doesnt rly matter tho cause im doing tons of other extracurriculars in cs
also im doing ap csa rn
Java programming

also im pretty sure dual enrollment gives me a big gpa boost
Java is the closest thing to God
Gpa only matters for class rank, colleges re calc it for themselves
i dont wanna learn it
😡
C is way better
I love java
You should love it too

csp is like basic basic cs
Checking this rn
bro i dont think any language would exist without C
Yeah not java
No, Fortran 💀
its java or python the teacher can choose
And stuff before C
thats why i wanna self study and not waste my school year
Java is not generally considered 'basic basic' CS imo
javascript
Sure, printing a line to the console is basic
you gain nothing by doing that bc no colleges accept CSP or CSA and CSP is a gpa booster
How dare you soil my biblically accurate java with that!?
(I'm an agnostic but Java is just too good)
C is used in old stuff that can't be replaced 😡
java is old too
Ofc you might need to know it depending on what job you wanna do
Yes
My beloved java
It's wise
And usefull
And adopted
Easy to get a job with
Easy to work with
i coded with java and i wanted to throw up
Eat something bad?
🤣
Did you not use my beloved intellij idea with Java?
Java has a bad effect on people's stomaches without the proper IDE
What did you use
Don't say VS Code
How do you even code Java on sublime text
idk i was jokin
CSS text editors go hard
Oh lmao
what is sublime even used for
Man doesn't deserve to have a good life with food and shelter 😭
Web dev
dont diss on vs code like that
its my baby
vs code is like your grandma's sweater for java
Good as a rag, not to use for its intended purpose
This conversation ends here
Noone questions my beloved
My java
🤣
☕
do most top colleges care if you take 3 years of a language instead of 4
currently taking ap spanish lang and might take lit next year(my main or 2nd language isnt spanish and I have already got my state's seal of biliteracy for spanish)
i would rather take an engineering class or lighter ap class
most top colleges prefer 4, but 3 isn't bad at all, especially if you're replacing it with a skill like engineering or something that looks good like ap
i see the thing in my sitution is i am taking 6 APs next Year with spanish lang(7 since macro and gov are 1 sem)
so a lighter load would probably be good for my mental health😅
I'd say take the lighter load in that case, since if your mental health takes a hit then your grades likely will too
I did some research on top unis and except Princeton and Harvard, which require 4, rest are 3
Nice
The weird thing is some of the honors classes in my school are harder than APs
which sound weird but my precalc H class 2nd semester is said to be harder than AB calc
also when you mean "require" like I cant apply if i dont do 4?
They prefer 4
had me worried there
it all depends on the person
lol
yeah I dont know if 4 years of a language means much for cs
not unless i need to code in spanish
Like johns hopkins
It depends college to college
Some colleges require 4yrs
none require its just preference
maybe some liberal arts or if u applying to major in a language?
as long as you have literally no ECs you goood 👍
Yeah hahaha(Laughs in scioly and speech team and jv sport and coding/yt)

gl
well the time commitment shouldn't be huge on those
if you are studious you are probably good
Does this look good?
literally my schedule next year
good schedule
it seems like ur going to stem side of things, maybe in the future consider comp sci a or physics C or BC calc
If I take all of the AP physics classes in hs what will be able to skip to in college
Or will I still go to intro physics
assuming u get scores that give u credit and the college allows that physics than u can skip intro
i dont know why u would still go into intro
that would kinda be a waste of money
u will skip intro level classes and get into intermediate to high level
again depends on college
What r the intermediate classes
Becuase I plan on doing 1 next yr both Cs in junior and senior yr but also plan on dualing smth in physics so I wanted to know what I could take
So like for example with an AP u can skip the 100 level intro class and get into a 200/300 level class
those are intermediate level class imo
i am not a 100 percent expert
those are from Yale's website
i think applies to all colleges
if u are going into stem spefically majoring in physics u are gonna need to take a lot fo physics classes
so skipping the intro classes will save u $$$
if ur going into stem u might need to take a physics class in general
so again save money
if ur going into stem consider taking humanities AP/dual credit
most colleges require gen ed classes
Physics/astronomy
take an AP calc
take physics C if u can
maybe take a astronomy class at ur local college
Ya that’s the plan
then ur good man
Everyone is telling me AP physics as a sophomore will be hell
💀
r u taking any activities
if u dont really dont do anything after school then u will have time
again hearing from ur courseload u are gonna need to grind
Ya…
but if u work hard it will pay off trust
1
ah makes sense
ngl skip CSP and go to CSA
Can’t need pathway credit
Ya ik 😂
maybe talk to ur consuler
i dont know how good ur high school is/ how strict it is with classes
ask if u can skip it and go to A
Rn sophmore
yeah thats really good
yo
any aussies?
what courses whould i take for my ATAR?
im more interested in STEM subjects
so ones that help with the scaling and such
hey guys, so im going to my freshman year of high school soon and was wondering if i should take an ap class (ap art history or ap computer science are the only ones offered) or Spanish 1 since 2 years (3yrs recommend) of foreign language is required, im planning to pursuit medicine if that helps, ty
cool r u taking any chemistry or biology classes?
since ur a freshman i dont know if ur gonna hard committ to medicine or not(u have time to change ur mind) so I dont see why taking comp sci will hurt
take A not principles though
Imo ^
im required to take a biology a class but why not principles?
i see no value in taking principles over A
that is my opinion though
here is a thread from reddit
i think that response sums it up
the first part at least
CSP is goot basics
but imo those basics get covered by CSA
what do u mean by “A”? im sorry if its a bad question but im just confused with everything since ive never been in these types of schools
it basically = to introductory college level class
should I take csa even if I’m not intrested in it?
for computer science
well the main reasons to take it based on ur situation:
To understand AP classes/tests
To see if u interested in programming
art history is also not a bad choice
do you think I should take a zero period just to take an ap class? since im debating whether or not it’s too much work for me to handle??
do yall know the diff between AP and IB
the school im going to next yr only has IB courses and no AP
I don't know ur academic abilities so you have to make that decision
If it's too hard drop the class and take it another year
Zero period is pain
Depending on when ur school starts
What are the differences between IB vs. AP classes? Read about IB and AP classes in high school and learn more about how these programs work.
For next year, I was offered a position at an advanced math and science school. Of course, I was happy, because my goal is to do real work in science and math. The opportunity to learn and collaborate with math and science enthusiasts like myself was exciting for me. I also look forward to experiencing the new challenges since I don't feel challenged at my current school. I found out that I can't take a.m. classes at the school because of the school Im from (they only offer a.m. positions to the richer schools). I, personally don't want to take classes during pm time because I would miss out on orchestra and student council (I'm committed to president) which I'm passionate about. I've talked to my science and math teacher and they both agree that I should take classes there as they recognize I'm not being challenged what so ever. I'm not sure if I should take classes as I don't wanna give up orchestra and the presidency. My student co teacher said that they aren't allowed to give spots to only the richest school and that my parents should complain to the school. The other option that my mom wanted to do was "contribute" to the school but that doesn't quite feel right either.
Sorry for the long yap
based off ur opinion, how hard are ap classes? especially since my zero period started at 7:30am compared to regular schedule 8:30am
thanks, @jolly granite
Damn u lucky but anyways
Again depends
In general they Harder than honors
But some classes u can not try as hard and get an A and a 5 on the ap exam
Some of them are generally just hard
However if I am not good at English I might get a C in the AP english lang class
It would of been better for my GPA if I took reg instead
Sorry I don't understand what ur saying could u summarize it 😅
last question, im not quite sure if I would get good grades in ap comp science or ap art history, so would it be best to wait till next year so I get a wider range of ap classes that might also help me in the medical field too? thanks man
Yeah if ur staying at the medical field u will be majoring in biology or biochem
But also the college u want to go to
If ur goal is a state school then getting some A's and B's should work
But if u want to go to top colleges taking an ap freshman year shows u can handle their tough load
If it is principles getting a good grade shouldn't be too hard, again depends on academic skills
Is it u can't take harder classes due to conflicts with ur activities?
thanks man, will take ur advice in consideration ❤️
Np again all my opinion so get intake from ur parents, consumers, and friends!
No worries! Formatted it way too long but basically I got offered a position at advanced math and science school but I can’t take the courses without giving up student council, presidency, and orchestra because of the time.
R u taking those activities at the same school?
Really depends on how prestigious
Do u live in us?
Sorry for late response, no it’s a whole different school that I would have to go to part time. It’s the most prestigious jr high program in school district I’m from the US specifically Utah
Wait ur in middle school?
Yes
Does this higher level class get u into better ranked high school
Or high level classes than the normal school ur in rn
The course would lead me to a high school that’s best ranked public in state or something
Sorry don’t want to disclose my info
I don’t feel comfortable telling you that because you would know where I live
Okay I assume that it is the Beehive I don't know
If it is one of the best in the state yes
It’s not
Just an example
If it is one of the best then yes switch
U can apply for their student council and orchestra there as well
If they have better education they will have better music and student body probably as well
I don't know ur entire story just my suggestion
Can’t, it’s a part time school
U mean can't?
Yea sorry
Yea
Since ur in middle school I would talk to ur parents but Here is my final advice:
Switch schools due to the new one leading into one of the best high Schools in the state
U can continue practicing orchestra on ur own
Then join the high school one
Sorry to break it to you student council and president are popularity contests at the end of the day
Hear that one a lot
If ur good at orchestra then u can compete in competitions
It’s not about that though
It’s fulfilling to me and so is orchestra which makes it hard to make a decision
Ah I see
Well it's up to u and ur parents
Everything above is the advice I can give
Good luck
K, thanks appreciate it.
try and complain to the school before just giving up because it sounds like you like orchestra/stuco
but at the same time the school would be good for u
you should apply to orhcestra outside of school as an extra, and do something similar to stuco outside of school to stay fullfilled and those are both nice extracurriculars.
im also in 8th grade so i dont know much
Is aerospace engineering a good choice for major?
W choice its not the most popular out of the engineering but still good major
If u have an interest u will like it
Who wants to learn French https://discord.gg/c3sJyPR6 I will not start until the number is complete
Does anyone here major in AI? What do you need to prepare?
U can't really major in AI just in computer or data science then get a job in AI
U can work on AI projects along the way as well
I see... do you have any suggestions on what I need to do to build experience?
Assuming ur in high school learn python
Others can be used but less popular
Then start making non ai projects using python for practice
For example make an ai that can predict the value of stocks in the next day
And whether the user should buy or sell or Nothing
Working on it right now, for school assignment purpose tho
Its self project, i can make anything
Here are a bunch of projects
Just pick one and start working on it
I am not too experienced in ai just started dabling in it
For sure! I think im gonna show you the result, is that okay?
Once the project finished
Cool I am down
