Is that 3rd year?
And cure cancer
only?
And have your dad also go to the school
only?
Or better yet, your dad teaches there
Second
And your dads dads dads dad
Definitely
I think ochem is made to just weed out all the students that want to be doctors 🥲
Oh
Doesn’t physics weed out the students
i actually do have a chance at gtech tho
cuz legacy
Yep
And it doesn't even need to be calculus based
Huh, is that standard?
are you shooting for a masters or bachelors?
I heard pre meds complaining about physics tho
Oui
You have to take one year of physics, problem is a lot of people choose biology because they're bad at math
Are you taking MCAT soon?
masters
Anyways guys how hard is AP CHEM, APUSH, and AP calc BC because I have to take those courses next year
ohh okay
I found it ok
At least the exam
apush isnt that bad
I did chem, and calc last year
its lots of notes LEQ SAQ DBQ
fancy names (theyre easy once u get the gist of em)
APUSH is the only one I'm mildly scared of because math and science are super easy but I feel like the memorization of A PUSH is going to suck
Eh
I have friends in the class so I know what they mean
k so my main way of studying is to treat it like a show
Elaborate?
check #social-studies-help
No
When are u taking it?
AP chem was my worst enemy but I also had a bad teacher so idk
well it's studying and learning
Next year and senior year
i got a perfect 760 on the psat, have A's in every math class ive taken so im prob chillin. Also i am in phys 1 rn
What med school you aiming for
i thought that was composite score at first 💀
Idk, any that would accept me 😭
It’s so competitive
I might just go to Europe
Yeah med school unfortunately is about as competitive as you can get
Oxford is in my list so I can respect that
Oh, I was thinking of going to Europe because it would be cheaper 😭
It is much cheaper
If college gets too hard I might just drop out 😭✌🏻
Worst case scenario you finished your bachelor's and you have an incredibly marketable college degree
Peace out, finish my license as a surgical tech, and work there 🤡
Just that easy folks
Yes
nah lmao i got 1450
I really hope I get national merit
National merit is how you get full rides ✨✨✨
I already have a full ride secured at my local University due to a program I'm in
legit?
Yeah
So if all else falls out I can just go to the local University and get myself a free bachelors
Although everyone is saying how selective schools will have more resources for you
I feel like it’s kinda the opposite
Because everyone is as smart or smarter than you, and everyone wants the resources too
Europe sucks
The universities there a genuinely so bad
I visited a few times
Exactly, if I go to my local University I can easily become top of my class, president of a physics club, win a few awards, get a bunch of internships, if I go to Princeton then everyone is as smart as me so I get none of that
Yeah
Oxford and Cambridge exist
I would agree to that
There’s a program in my uni where 100 students can gain automatic admissions to Baylor College of Medicine (which is affiliated with basically all major hospitals in the country)
And I… didn’t get in
😭
That's the problem, if you're going to go to a top school you can't just be a standard genius, you need to be a super genius,
Because a standard genius is the average
I don't even know why I can't so much about going to a top college anymore
what did you get?
Care?
I'm a freshman so I haven't took it yet
oh lmao
Yea lol
why are you thinking about that now ☠️
College is expensive and I need to plan ahead
Because everyone is simply programmed to want to get into the top colleges
It’s propaganda lol
well okay it may sound a bit hypocritical when I’m saying it 😭
But like I’m going here for the full ride >.>
i guess but there are other things you should be focusing your mental energy on in freshman year
Prestige
Especially if you’re asian
Honestly
whether you succeed in life isn’t that much dependent on this
More dependent on personal discipline and genetics
I have a 4.0, have secured myself in several clubs, preparing to open a passion project to help teach kids stem at the local library on the weekends, forming study habits, getting to know teachers, all of that stuff is done so I get to plan ahead
Genetics..
Feyman had a recorded IQ of 125 and he is one of the most well-known physicists of recent times
For people with disabilities
What I think (hope) they mean is that you're going to face many more challenges if you struggle with stuff like autism and ADHD, it's not impossible but it would definitely make it more difficult, and people without them definitely have an easier time, and I say this as someone with dyslexia (although I need to take more tests because we aren't 100% sure yet) and ADHD
Yes
Why the heck would you think I was talking about eugenics💀
Normal ppl don’t usually bring up genetics?? 😭
Well it is harder though
For them
Okay let's get off this topic
My bf with ADHD and me with OCD and depression 🤭
Exactly, you can still be hyper successful
Yeah, anyway do try to contact your library
Yes
I think a lot are trying to have more engaging activities for kids
I made a bunch of paper crafts with my kids at the library I volunteered at
I find it interesting that a lot of high achieving people have these actually
Exactly, and I already have over 100 hours of volunteer tutoring so I have some qualifications
Definitely write them down and sign them off
I lost around 170 hours because I lost my hours sheet 😭
Already contacted my teacher who held the volunteer tutoring to send me papers
I'll say now you are good at marketing
Well volunteer hours by themselves don’t really matter
Where you are volunteering
And the effects of it
Are more important
Exactly, that's why I'm connecting it to my passions and what I'm good at, and starting a program at a local library to have science demonstrations and activities for the youth to get them engaged in stem and make them excited to learn, I'm doing this because I'm very energetic and sociable and a good teacher, and combining that with my love of science and math
Nice
👍
I know that just having volunteer hours doesn't mean anything hence why I've tried to connect my key attributes
(and if it goes well it's a good college essay topic )
Would you say 2 to 4 is a good amount of leadership positions to have?
Nice, because I'm guaranteed to become color guard Captain next year, I'm almost definitely becoming costume crew chief junior senior year, and then executive board of theater honor society and executive board of biomedical engineering is a maybe depending on how elections go
@full tinsel what do you think of this idea?
I'm using voice commands
Ok
Hot topic
AP Sem and Research are overrated and I should instead take Lang and Lit
My school doesn't even have AP research and seminar
That's probably a good thing
A lot of people think they are jokes so you're not alone
Why?
what is that
ive heard the term passed around
AP Capstone is a ripoff program where you get a useless piece of paper from completing AP Seminar and AP Research
and u couldnt pay me enough to take either of those courses
Yeah
AP Sem and Research at my school are considered english courses
Ppl are taking those more cuz they're easier
Whereas I'mma take Lang and Lit as 2 times more colleges accept those courses for credit unlike Sem and Research.
as someone in sem i can attest to this
i have the highest grade in the class (b+ :()
No colleges take the credits and they are hard from what I've heard
Yea
But people at my school r whining about lit.
And are saying that ppl should take sem. instead
yeah
kind of an exaggeration. colleges will take them for credits, but not as an 'english' class
also, imo, suuuuper useful class
True
i think people hate on sem/research a lot for no reason
Except most colleges give credit for either lang or lit
So if you take them both
Youre only getting credit for one
So id recommend just doing one of them
People don't like classes that actually challenged them
are you in any ap classes rn?
Well thats growing
Oh also it seems you are a fellow feynman fan
Feynman is so coooooooool
Did you read his book
Surely youre joking
My school doesn't let freshman take APS
What classes are you taking?
He's my favorite physicist
I think thats so stupid
People are at different levels of advancement
Theyre inhibiting the growth of those who can handle it
Its like where in that one place in california they made everybody do algebra i freshmen year
Its also cool cuz his iq wasnt actually a lot
So he was a hard worker
Not a lot meaning compared to like einstein
Honors bio, English 1, algebra 2, geometry, world history,
Choir
PE
Spanish 1
Why I love him, he shows that anyone can succeed
Yeah and i like his creativity
His intuition and connecting things was the best
Like i read this thing about how he optimized the telephone pick up system in his aunt’s hotel
In his book
Thats good
You also have a fine arts
Whats your major
Well planned
Physics
Are there any engineering electives
Did you take amc
Hey at least you have a decisions by freshman year
Im so confused what to do
I know its in STEM
But idk if its CS, Engineering, or Physics
I could triple major 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Ain't no way
AP Pre calc, AP bio (teacher is lowkey bad but nice and it’s hard to have high a) AP World History (easy but lot of work), English 2 (teacher is sooo hard), AP Physics (ik im doubling up science but honestly not sure if i shud), Dance (but i could just take it later instead of now) and theatre production
shud i double up
Have you done any ap sciences this year?
I mean if youre going into sophomore year
i’m a freshman , only allowed aphg
Chem honors?
yes
yes
Ok
in 8th grade
I'm doubling up next year
AP Chem and AP Physics I
Goood luck
Exactly
Before AP Chem
So I can start to focus on getting good things
So I'll take AP Chem 2nd semester
Ive done bio honors
And then i went to ap physics
So i need to do chem over the summer
Sometime
Except i dont have time over the summers
So ill probably have to do second sem
Ohhh
the only thing would be another ap class
options are like ap research, ap spanish
Are tou interested in CS
How can tou do research without sem
my school u do research first then sen
Yeah
but help
is it worth taking ap spanish without the exam
the class is so easy easy gpa boost
Honestly at this point the gpa boost doesnt matter if thats what youre looking for
Weighted gpa is so vague
It doesnt really matter that much
Rigor matters
does colleges have their own way to classify rigor
So when they look at your transcript amd see ap they might see rigor
or do they jsut go off of what transcript says
I think its just CP honors AP
Common data set
I dont think they can compare for example ap psych vs ap euro
But they can compare honors psych vs ap psych
like counselors will literally classify u as taken the most rigourous courseload if u have more than 2 honors classes each year
oh
?
Damn
The thing is one of my two hardest classes isnt even an ap
Yeah my counseloe gave me a look of me being in pain when I'm taking 5 APs next year
i can graduate early
Oh you guys did course selection already?
School counselors have very low standard
I think my soph year is my most painful
Next year should be chill
Other than apush hmwk
APUSH ez for me
We havent started course selection yet
Im confused about which ap english to do
Thats the biggest one I think
I'm taking both cuz I'm required one english course per year
Taking Lang junior year Lit senior year
Sem and research do xount
Next year i can choose between lit lang and seminar
I dont want anything to do with lit
So i can basically choose between seminar and lang
I should've taken AP Sem instead of English 10 but my counselor screwed me up
Just for English 10
I would've discarded research for Lang and Lit
Ive heard some schools do ap slang
They combine sem and lang
Id want to do a course like that
Calcs?
Ye
They were even considering combining the ap worlds if there ever was an ap world history ancient
Yeah i hate
How ap euro
And al world
Are both
Modern
Even though ancient is much cooler and more interesting
Yeah world is fun
Except you dont go into much detail
Its a lot of big picture stuff
But in a much larger timeframe
That's what AP Euro is
APUSH's granular detail and World's time frame
That's going to be a senior elective for me, how is it
I'm taking AP Sarcasm
Thats so true
Its fun
Just lots of homework
Except the homework is interesting to do
The readings are more historical readings
At least at our school, apush is a lot of textbook stuff
While euro is more read people of that time and stuff
But yeah a lot of detail
In a very large time frame
I've heard, taking a senior year to look good and because an awesome teacher teaches it
Yeah same we have an awesome teacher for it too
Everyone loves the AP European teacher because he's super loud and engaging,
Guys
Im taking algebra 1 advancing to honors geometry next semester and taking algebra 2 summer school
Is this possible
I heard you need a full year of honors geometry to take algebra 2
Nah not really
Ok
Theres is this progrm people do in a mifdle school that feeds into our hs
Like 20-30 peope do alg ii in 8th grade
Geometry in 9th
ok
Guys- I need help
Im looking at a science stream which is PCB with psychology/PE/IP
One of the schools I just visited does not offer psychology
What do I do-
I really want to pursue psychology in my 11th grade
11th grade math is wild
im thinking of taking ap psych online this yr because next yr my schedule is filled is this managable as a freshman
AP Psychology is not a very hard AP class, but it is memorization heavy.
wouldn’t reccomend taking alg 2 summer school cuz u may not learn the fundamental concepts. is there anyway to take geoemtry summer school?(only sine cosine and tan will actually be used in the future everhhting else is basiclaly useless)
I have a list for the classes I want to take next year (senior year)
AP Calc AB
AP Physics 1
AP Government
English 12
AP Computer Science A
Cybersecurity
IT Programming
Should I do AP Lit?
I'm doing ap lang rn but I'm not confident in lit
I think if youve done lang you dont need to do lit
But if you like reading literature
which i dont 💀
Yeah then not really
well I can but I don't enjoy it
Also cool your school offers lots of IT classes
yeah
for my school district this school focuses on IT
I transferred to it this year
sadly I can't take ap computer science right off the bat
so i have to take it senior year 💀
and i could of taken cybersecurity this year if I known about it before school started
Its fine its not too hard of an AP
yeah
Oh ik i'm gonna get an A in both classses
My dad works in cybersecurity he literally wont let me get lower then an A
plus I like it anyway so
i heard lit helps with writing ur college essay
That’s ap lang 💀
ok well its still an AP
yk a college level course
so its still building up ur essay skills
well all i've heard is that AP Lang was beneficial for the SAT/ACT sue me
true
yea so in a sense both APs build essay skillz
easiest APs to self study??
the fifth one
Is studying literature in college worth it? I either wanna study literature or get a teaching degree
Why
I only care about class rigor not if i learn aynthing
I already know algebra 2 from khan academy
Go teaching, if that’s your passion, but don’t take lit because there are very limited job options
for upcoming class courses
how hard is ap chem
Conceptually it is hard
did anyone taken honors bio
me
hard?
no
For an average student, the workload (at least for my school) was around 30-45 min per day. It’s a lot of content that should be studied if even a bit confusing. There’s lots of interpretation from graphs and text too, as well as hypothesizing hypothetical experiments based on results from past ones. Over all, the class difficulty for me is like an 8/10 the main reason being I just don’t like bio, I’m more interested in physics/astronomy, so motivation is also a key detail
ohh ty ty
i was actually never meant to be placed in honors so-
oh i like bio so it’s different, def motivation matters a lot
ima fail
gud gud
also i had so so much free time cuz i took it early so i would study so much, like 7+ hours for a test
what was yo final grade in that class
wow
ik im dumb 😭
You’re just over-comparing yourself to others
im just stating the fact
Mostly everyone here wants to go to an Ivy
ik
For being misplaced in an honors class, it’s okay to struggle. Even a B goes a long way
98 lol
i wasnt misplaced just one of my teacher told my counselor to put me in a honors class
Without you knowing?
u gotta help me then
no i went with them
Oh
so?
like i was abt to be placed in normal bio class but my afjrotc instructor told my mom, my counselor, and me to be placed in a honor class so they changed my class into honors
Ohhhh I see
yes
@languid ruin Your message(s) have been flagged as spam and have been removed.
Dang
Whats prereq for ap chem
Whats prereq for honors chem
Whats prereq for algebra 2
Whats the advanced versions of algebra 2
Im freshman taking biology 1 is it possible to get into ap chem next semester then go to take ap physics 2 summer school
@thorn brook
I need to decide my future career and I really briefly know what I want but I have no idea how to tell my parents cause the thing I want to do is expensive and there is scholarship but im too scared and I dont even know if it is gonna work for me? I have tried researching on the things I want to do and what I saw was Finance and Graphic design but im still not sure and I really have to decide I dont have time at all now
so u cant take an AP over summer unfortunately
i would not recommend going to AP chem from bio, you reaaaallly wanna get a good base of chemistry before jumping into that
at my school, it's getting high grades in biology
having taken geometry and algebra1
There is no prerequisite but there is a corequisitie
You need to be taking alg ii concurrwntly
Geometry and alg i
Precalc is the next one, alg 2 honors is advanced
Yes my friends are doing that
You do chemistry over the summer
And then you can do ap chem during the year
i want to take ap physics next yr as a sophmore is this reasonable
(i am taking 3 other aps)
yea if u took alg 2 already
That honestly depends on ur school . My school wouldnt allow it but ik schools that would. Try asking ur school counselor
ya im taking it rn but idk how difficult the concepts r
if ur in alg 2 rn, youll be fine in physics 1
k thx
Most schools have a course catalog. Those will mention prerequisites.
Do college like seeing 4 years of math in high school more? I plan on skipping alg 2 and Precalc before going in as a freshman, but then I’ll only have 3 years of hs available, ap calc ab, bc, and stats
Are you in a magnet school because how you learning precalc in 8th?
I self learned it on khan academy
That's fine. You've taken the highest math you can.
If your school offers multivariable calculus/linear algebra through community college, you can consider that too.
Alr sounds good
what’s aps are best/easiest to self study
Does it look bad to colleges if you did us history honors over summer but take apush during the school year
APES, APCSP, APSTATS are some of the easier ones
no not necessarily but why take honors if you’ll take AP?
why not just study for AP over the summer?
MIT prefers Honours to APs
Im planning on taking apes my senior year and ap physics 2 next year (junior) is that a good idea or should i take ap physics 1 junior and ap physics 2 senior
Good point
cuz i was rlly dumb and i decided to do honors
but now i realize i shouldve done ap cuz an ap in history is important for top 20 schools
so now im debating whether i should do apush rn online or not
It just does
APCSP makes you do a project tho
wdym
If i were to study engineering/physics in college do u recommend me take 1 year of physics but self study for the other physics ap exams or should i take 2 years of physics and not self study for ap exams
its over
how to tie a rope
ok
I thought honors chem is sophomore gened clas and alg 2 is junior gen ed class
Ok
Ok
Are ap chem and chem same year/grade level or is it something you choose i n senior year after taking physics
Ok
Ok
Yes
I think @cinder gorge misunderstood, according to goingivy.com, “Some high schools do not offer advanced placement classes, and MIT understands that. If your school does not offer AP courses, take the honors curriculum and work to achieve the highest scores possible in every class.”
The create project
it counts for 30% of your AP exam grade
the other 70% is the actual multiple choice test
No, MIT genuinely prefers honours classes to AP classes.
Its common knowledge and repeated by many alumnis and AOs
So what’s wrong with it?
it makes AP csp not ideal for self studying
So choose the other 2 (stats and/or apes)
why would they prefer you to take an easier class
that makes no sense
Bro grass doesn’t have any sources besides “i said so” or “everyone knows that”
not even worth arguing trust me
AP exams and classes are pretty easy
Many honors classes are harder than AP classes
You can’t even get credits for AP exams there
It is common knowledge
I think they’re objectively harder
that’s why the GPA weighted increase
Only rigour matters, and AP classes are not necessarily harder
No they are not
GPA increase doesn’t mean anything
which honors classes are harder than their AP variant?
It’s made up by adminstrators
Explain
the reason this exists is because of the relative difficulty of the classes
GPA increases are made up by school board members and administrators who have no idea what is going on
Do colleges only care about whether you took most advanced course offered for sernior year or do they care if you had honours and ap variants of the courses you took before in junior, sophomore and freshman yeard
Honours classes are not standardized
Some honours classes are much harder than others
so then how does MIT know if they’re harder than the AP’s?
Your school counsellor has to file a report to the university to indicate the difficulty and rigour of the classes
For example
Algebra 2 regular in reshman
Precalc regular in sophomore
Calculus BC in junior
AP stats in senior
Some schools for example teach o-chem in their regular classes
Which is much harder than AP chem
Would they care if you took honors versions of algebra 2 and precalc
oh I thought organic chemistry was only college
Different curriculums in schools
That’s why counsellor reports are so important
but if ur school doesn’t have that then AP chem would (probably) be the hardest one availible to you
and they want you to take the hardest
The thing is you need to know the difficulty of the courses offered at your school
Proved my point
I want to take AP Phsyics C to get into an engineering school but my school only offers AP Phsyics 1 & 2. What should I do? Should I enroll in an online course for AP Phsyics C?
get physics 1 and 2 on your transcript and if you're that passionate then yes u can try to self study physics C
which sounds impossible but this server is full of geniuses
Or instead of killing urself self studying, you could take it online.
Yes, that's what I was asking
Thanks guys, I'll also talk to my counselor about this
Should I do Business or CS idk how to narrow it down and what to do
Sorry but that sounds like a question for you think really hard about what u wanna to in college
I know I just want some preferences thanks for the tip tho
If your asking my preference and what I think is most beneficial for you then I think business cause if cs didn’t work out then business gets you in to so many college majors
Ap chemistry I take sophmore year or Ap bio?
that’s me next year 😭
Depends how good you are at memorization
If you’re good at it, bio
If not, Chem
Im very mid at memorization
Yeah, we also have anatomy and physiology for regular biology💀
Our regular chem has o-chem
yeah same here and I’m taking biochem prob next year too
Our regular courses are literally harder than AP classes
My school has reg chem and the advanced ones are fusion/fission, electrochem and orgo
And I’m taking all of them 😭
Samesies
For all my classes too which is fun and also hella stressful
How good are your classmates
v v good
Like how?
Does your school do AMC
Math comp
We just literally hire college professors
Umm maybe our math clubs do but I wouldn’t know
Our school got a very sus score💀
I feel like a lot of people cheated
Like around where?
Is it Exeter or Andover?
Massachusetts
Bruh, Andover?
And nah but ik a lot of people at my school who got into Andover and turned it down
Why?
Those lowkey aren’t good schools
Andover is literally one of the best schools
They are💀
Like they have fucking insane funding
Lots of genuinely insane geniuses go there
But a lot of the kids are just normies like the rest of us
You can get scholarships
But in a grade of like 100 people 20 of them are preolympians or whatever so they treat those 20 like they make up the total amount of the class
Also their Ivy acceptance rate got nuked last year because there’s now a quota on how many people colleges can accept
And it’s sooooo hard to differentiate urswlf from everyone else
So like 4 of my good friends got in and turned it down
But its still very high
eh a lot of people are legacies so it’s kind of fudged
My school has abt the same for some of the colleges
What is the rate?
If not higher for Colombia and brown for some weird ass reason
We had 12 acceptances to Colombia last year (out of like 95 kids) and we’re a feeder to brown
Obvi not all went there tho
bruh
How much does tuition cost?
…..
60k?
I guessed it👍
yeah most private schools in the area are around there
So its pretty comparable to Exeter and Andover
Do u go to one?
No, I am in Canada
eh we’re considered like second or third tier actually
I just talk to some people in Massachusetts, everyone there is insane
But at one point or another there’s really no difference between the schools
Like I got into Deerfield and Groton which are considered better schools than the one I’m at rn but like it’s such a small difference
yeah, competition is hella insane
Wait, theres only 95 students in a grade?
Damn, thats really small
Sometimes I wish my parents lived in like Iowa
We have like 300
Yeah I mean it’s small but I like it
Besides again it’s a private school, most of them are this size
Smaller schools are better
Big schools are choatic
My bfs brother goes to a feeder to Harvard (because they’re all legacies) and like 17 people got in last year out of a class of 80 😭
they’re better for education that’s for sure
How many to ivies in total?
dude idk the list
Bruh, I should move to Massachussets💀
You really shouldn’t
Just go to the boarding schools
They’d love to have more international kids lol
Top tier education
Well thats good
it’s good until you’re competing against these people for admission
But the rate is higher
It motivates you more
Like be honest, you’ll still get into a t20 college even if you don’t make it to the ivies
what is it like dual enrolling a world language online?
ugh I hope so
Are summer classes worth taking?
which AP science is best for sophomore year? i’ve been trying to figure this out but i just can’t choose
i plan to do AP Precalc, AP world, AP human geography, an AP science, and AP french next year for reference if that matters
Ok
You do you ig
The curriculum is different in many schools
O-chem is included in regular chem classes here
Not really, some students self study 15 APs before senior year though
Everyone takes the same level
Honours classes were banned here which is really idiotic 💀
Yeah
Apparently “discrimination”
We have weird policies here in Canada💀
Thats so stupid
Its Probably why there are people getting 3 or less on AP exams
Yeah
And banning classes and making everyone take the same thing is just stupid
I mean like people have gone to mid schools like Kenyon but that’s because they wanted to and/or they didn’t study and fucked up their senior fall
even the advanced people?
just looked it up that’s some of the stupidest shit I ever read lol
plenty of kids are ready to take algebra in middle school
me and 30 other kids in my grade took it in 7th, and we all passed with A’s and B’s
A summary of America
Depends if you need them or not. For me I did just for personal enrichment.
Is this a good schedule for junior year
I’m doing
Ap csa
Orchestra
German IV
Ap Research
Calc bc
US history (required)
Ap physics c
ye
nice
german 4 is impressive
Make sure that's APUSH
Never cheap out
You have a great schedule! Remember junior year tends to be the hardest so whatever higher level classes you take such as AP be ready for a heavier workload!
alr thx
i don't like history and i'm not good at it lol
I’ve only taken APES and I can tell you it was a very easy class, medium difficulty exam, BUT it has a roughly 50% pass rate on the exam because it covers so many darn topics and a lot of schools require AP Chem and AP Bio as prerequisites.
depends what other science you’ve already taken
if you’re doing bio this year then do AP bio
or you could do APES
maybe physics 1 if school offers
im currently taking currently one of the rigorous english course in my school and im already a bit struggling, but i managed to get a B in that class for my first quarter
im also thinking of taking english 101 dual enrollment on my nearby community college so that my english credit are done for once i hit senior year (i'm currently a junior)
i want to take this in the spring semester but due to the difficulty of my current english class (fyi im bad at english classes) my counselor suggest that i should take it during the summer semester, so what should i do? should i take english 101 on the spring or the summer semester?
Is this good for junior year?
AP Lang
AP Calc AB
AP ES
U.S. Gov
Choir
French 2
Personal Finance (Sem)
Intro to AI (Sem)
Off Block x 2
And before anyone asks I'm not planning on taking any AP Social Studies classes
what about science class? like physics or chem
By ES I mean Environmental Science
yall is it a good idea to take precalc at my city's local college and the khan academy precalc/trig/AP Calc BC courses over the summer in order to prep for AP Calc BC junior year? (im a sophomore in alg 2 rn)
my school's calc teacher was like "its ill advised"
What would you take senior year?
mvc
Multivariable calculus is offered at your school?
wow gg
Will you get any hs credit? Or only college credit?
Nones worse than the other
idrc about the credit
i care about if i do allat, ill be ready for calc bc
or if ill drown in all the work
I recommend self studying AP Precalc if you want to go into a more vigorous route
Going from algebra II to BC is a very big jump
yea im very well aware
if you take the test it’ll look good, idk how many colleges accept pre calc for credit but it will look good
wanna know whatll look even better?
?
having mvc on my transcript
also imagine the sob story on my college essay "oh they all told me i couldnt do and whoop-dee-doo"
mvc won’t make or break your college app, it would be strictly for you. Colleges like seeing many APs cand college level classes because it shows them that you’re ready for college and college will be a breeze
oh yea i got all that covered
I’m listening
im just concerned about my conceptual knowledge
exactly
I see
In that case, go for it
bet
Just be prepared for the about of work ahead
I also recommend studying a bit of AB, not for test or credit, just for you. I’m pretty sure it introduces calculus
I respect you 🫡
will do
thx
good luck man
thx ill need it
hi everybody! each year my goal is to take one online course over the summer. last year (8th to 9th grade) i took HOPE (psychical education) as it was a requirement and i definitely didn’t want that to hold me back. next year i’m thinking about taking history over the summer, which would leave me room for 4 electives, of which those i want to take AP psychology, chorus, french 2 (counts as an elective,) and one additional one. can someone help me pick an additional elective as well as if i should also take french 2 over the summer or take it in school as well? (my core classes would be english, chemistry, and algebra 2.) thanks in advance
@gilded bramble honestly take French during the school year and enjoy your summer break while you have one. On the off hand, take a fun art class or something you are interested in. Class schedules are tough and throwing an easy elective such as an art or theatre type class really gives your mind a break. If you like cooking, like I do, I took a home ec class my school offered.
okie dokie! also i’m in chorus rn and it’s my fav class 💃🏻 (gonna audition for a higher class next year) but i may also do theatre since i went to a performing arts middle school. good advice. thanks sweets!
You totally should do theatre especially if your school does a musical you would totally kill the audition especially if you are in choir. I’m rooting for ya
haha i’m auditioning for anastasia in january
You’ll do so great🙃
thanks sweets
are these good sophomore and junior year schedules?
10th grade:
Honors Spanish 3
Honors Chemistry
Honors World Literature
AP Calc AB
AP Stats
AP World History
AP Bio
11th grade:
Honors Spanish 4
AP Lang
AP Calc BC
AP Chem
AP Physics 1
AP USH
AP Psych
Senior year is a more relaxed schedule since the colleges will mostly look at 9th-11th
You are going to have a tough year. I am currently taking AP Lang, APUSH, and AP Stats, and there is a heavy workload. It's great if you can manage that workload but colleges also look at your grades so you have to be aware about how much time and brain power you are willing to put into your academics. I would also take into consideration that junior year is generally the toughest. This is the year you will most likley (if you haven't already) taken an ACT/SAT, go on college visits, apply for scholarships, do some clubs, work a job, and strengthen a college application or essay. As long as you can balance out the workload with the difficulty of the courses, it is a solid junior year schedule.
If it was possible I would’ve liked to balance out the AP’s more, maybe a few in 9th, a few in 10th, and then 3-4 in 11th
but the problem is that my school does not allow any AP for freshman and sophomores are pretty heavily restricted also
the only reason I’m able to do 4 next year is because I pulled some strings and emailed the right people
so 11th grade is the main year where we are free to take any AP we want
Is it rlly worth it
As said earlier you need good grades to make it worth it
And Eva
A crap ton of ap classes alone isn’t gonna do it
which should I cut out?
I want a stem major
If u want a stem major I’d cut world and prob do stat in senior year
Or calc in senior year
One of the 2
And then maybe cut apush or psych
I think I’ll remove Apush
Then I’d do stat sr year
Maybe lang too since I’m not a big english person
Yeah
That depends on the school
There’s a list for each school of what credit they take
I’ll figure that stuff out later ig but for sophomore does calc ab, and bio sound like a good idea?
Maybe world also
I really wish my school had AP computer science
apush isnt that bad
its taking a lot of notes
and memorizing how to answer 3 different kinda of questions
SAQ, DBQ, LEQ
?
short answer question
document based question
long essay question
once u get the gist of them, theyres not that bad
apush ultimately comes down to how well u memorize/study all the notes
my favorite thing lol, the one thing I'm good at
damn apush is perfect then
easy 5 on the exam then
yeah im excited tbh - I'm good at memorizing, not so good at calculations
i think everyone is one or the other naturally! I make a lot of silly mistakes in math and get stressed easily
so I've been working on doing more spaced repetition
W
What are some good APs for sophomores? (At my school sophomores can only take one)
same
maybe ap world?
if u like history
or ap seminar
prob apush
gives u a good feel for how ap really is
plus most people arent majoring in history so u dont have to share ur score with colleges if u got a 2 or a 1 on the exam
ap world, ap psych, ap seminar
those are the ones sophomores at my school usually take
i took ap world
yeah while this is true, a lot of unis in america have some sort of american histroy course u have to take as a college freshman (which u can not do if u score well)
oh psych is a good starter AP too
is apes hard? im thinking about taking it next year along with ap bio.
is it worth taking spanish 4 ap without the exam
should i go into IB history or IB philosophy?
.
Personally me, I choose IB history.
I need some help, i want to be an engineer, but i also want to make an impact, change the world for the better. But i dont know which branch would best fit my needs. I also want to make things, build and invent so.. Any ideas??
I dont want to make weapons that kill people, i want to help them
Bruh what is IB
international baccalaureate
I recommend at your school to find a problem, something that is an inconvenience (I recommend talking to a guidance counselor or principal) and try to create a solution. Make sure to document everything.
Do you guys recommend self studying Ap bio? My school just pulled the plug for this next semester on it since there wasnt enough student committment and my school is not made for academics (its a failing football program school)
It’ll be a lot of work but it’s definitely possible. Questions to ask yourself are “will this help my major?” And “why?”
for sure, im thinking about bio major for college so it would definitely help. have you taken it?
Nope! Probably won’t either, I’m not a fan of bio. But that says a lot on its own, motivation will easily get you through studying
From what my bio teacher has told me, you should have a good background in chemistry beforehand
Yeah, my upperclassmate said that as well. Thanks and good luck with your own passions my friend. I believe in you-- whatever it is you're interested in.
I appreciate that. I will probably go into physics and astronomy so I’ll need it!
I want to purse a career in law and attend UCLA. Do I still/should take AP science classes?
I would say yes
It’s good to show you’re interested in a wide variety of topics
Expand your interest
And a good score on any of the AP tests can get you credit so
Okay, thanks! Science isn’t really my strong suit or favorite tho
try your best n it will be worth it in the long run
Best APs for Astrophysics?
Civil engineering?
You can build sustainable stuff
AP Physics
Might as well take biology too in case you discover aliens
what classes have you taken?
because its mainly math I would suggest that you take calc, computer science, stats and really get your math figured out
Help
Im taking Biology, Algebra 1, Human Geo, Written and Oral Comm
Im thinking on advancing all in 2nd semester, then advancing 2 in summer sschool
I don't want to be a conspiracy theorist
There are already enough prereqs to take AP Chem and Physics
Hon Conceptual Physics, Hon Chem I, Geometry, and I'm currently in Hon Algebra II and Hon Biology
All of which a requirements to graduate
Am taking AP Precalc,Adv. Topics in Chem, AP Chem, and AP Physics I next yea4
Astrobiology is a legitimate field, but since you want astrophysics, take AP Calculus, AP CS, AP Stats, AP Chemistry are all really good fields
Also studying python will help u a lot
How is that a conspiracy theorist?
It is a legitimate field of study
How much of geometry actually occurs in later math classes like calculus? I know trig is a pretty big part and I’m confident with that but the other bullshit like “definition of congruent angles” and a lot of those other terms from geometry I completely forget
am I ever gonna use that or no?
Not a lot of it has come up for me outside of trig, but you definitely need to know Pythagorean theorem, special right triangles, and it's good to know more regarding triangles.
However, I haven't seen anything (so far) about any other stuff like congruent angle definition, parallel lines cut by transversals (good to know though), circumcenter/incenter, etc
I'm in AP Calculus AB btw
So
It's been a while
If you want just tell me a topic and I'll say how much it has come up for me
I know pythagorean stuff the main thing I don’t remember at all is proofs
Then why tf do they make us do that lol
In precal we had to prove identities
But
Not the same kind of proof
Or the same style
I’m trying to skip pre cal
If you do
Then self study (at least) the unit circle
And the trigonometric identities
I’m going to focus a lot on unit circle and trig identities that’s what everybody told me to do
yea
But I recommend taking precal over the summer if you can
what else is important
But if you can't then yeah
Uhhh
I can I think I had a meeting with my counselor yesterday
she says it’s rare for sophomores to do AP calc but thinks I can handle it
Learn how to convert radians and degrees
To each other
Kinda goes with Unit circle but still
Well that's what I'm doing and I'm handling it better than some of the seniors in my class
So if you think you can then go for it
Just, if you plan on doing BC
Then make sure you're comfortable with fast pacing
I’m doing AB
at my school it requires AB before BC
besides if I did BC then I literally wouldn’t have any other math class to take junior or senior year
tbh they should just replace calc BC with Calc CD
so you’d take AB then CD
it makes more sense
rather than BC which half the year is repeating what you already learned in AB
BC is 2 more units out of 12 units
And you do all the AB stuff again in BC anyways
Its a waste of time
Unless you are like a freshman/sophomore and can take both
Before senior year
Good for junior year?
English 3
Physics
Spanish 4 honors
APUSH
Precalc honors
AP US gov and pol
AP microeconomics
AP Macroeconomics
orchestra
Thats really good, youre getting in AP credit and from the look of it youre looking to go into social sciences, so this is really good specific stuff for smth in that field
Where tf do y’all take math after DE shit
AP pre calc is useless
no college will take the credit
just take actual AP calc
He is-and taking AP precalc is better than honors
skip pre
self study precalc, dont just skip it
obv
I just mean skip the school course
oh yea dats what im doin
but its good for gpa
like if i do well
and it'll help for calc bc
for us now its either ap pre calc or regular pre calc
6.0 scale vs 5.0
so i took ap pre calc
they removed pre calc honors idk why
taking algebra 2 and ap precalc is redundant
Precalc is a combination of alg 2 and trig
ap precalc gives you no advantage in calc bc
Precalc in general just isn't really used in calculus the way you'd think
When I took calc AB
The actual calculus part is completely different from precalc--it actually prepares you for the algebra that is done to like prepare the calculus
I remembered absolutely nothing from my semester of pre calc
We ended up reviewing everything learned in pre calc anyways so
Source: I took mat 171 (precalc) last year and am in mat 175 (calc) this year
The only precalc we do is when we are doing algebra but I mean it's nothing hard
Distributive property of multiplication, distributing quantities (FOIL/box methods)
Oof. I'm taking AP Stats senior year
if you self study they can’t really make you take a class
that u already know
I can't self study math
Due to staffing issues
I'm assuming AP Precalc is just an extension of Algebra II I'm taking
my school is planning to add ap physics c as a course next year (still unconfirm if they are actually adding it), so should i take ap physics c?
- ap physics c in my school is mechanics, electricity, and magnetism (i think)
- im taking ap physics 1 with the same teacher he planned to teach ap physics c
- there's no ap physics 2, nor is a requirement
- i have all the prerequisites (ap calc ab and physics 1 requirement)
- my major is computer science
Precalc is a combination of algebra 2 and trigonometry
What classes should I register for freshman year??
Depends on your priorities I would say
that’s dependent on what your in right now
what is your current math class?
do you like physics?
physics c is different from physics 1 and 2 in that its almost purely based on whether you actually want to take it unlike 1 and 2 where most schools if not all require you to take both at some point or another
if you like physics and like calculus then sure since it is a calculus based course
