Then get another job
idk they closed down soon after I got laid off
prolly not profitable
I will look for walmart jobs / internships
in august
how easy are internships in first year?
U cant start now?
Wdym by 1st yr
Idk depends on the internship
Wait borger are you duck?.
my college courses didnt start
anything that pays decent like 10-12$ per hour
related to my major
Internships pay low/nothing i believe
Thats not even minimum wage
Also minimum wage in the states is 7.25 federally
For me its $16/hr
that is much bigger
..
Do you have any experience? If not, usually internships are good during/right after college to secure a job
only mcdonalds
Ok yeah. Not getting anything for engineering just with that experience and no college right now
Some pay and some give like a check after a few months
Usually low amount. Sometimes not
Most times though. Easy to get work without much pay
For us, its like $600 for like 2 months
I did smth similar, A level chem but vv close to ap
I did a level bio too
chem is not fun
but its hard for everyone
Then dont
For how many hours?
@unreal prairie get a data entry part time job
2hrs a wk
Thats really high. Usually i think tutoring is the only thing now that pays that much
Borger are you duck?.
nah its not IB
How did you guess? lol
AP stats isn't that deep and I'd say yeah
A semester of college stats I'd say is the bare minimum of you being fine for life which just so happens to be the amount of stats covered by AP Stats
Ap stats is easy right
Alright idk what to say about that
It's medium difficulty
Do you think I’ll be fine taking Multivariable Calc and ap stats at the same time
You would but I wouldn't encourage it
More because taking Multvariable calc seems to be looked down on by colleges for some reason
Especially seeing how you live in the U.S
Strange
Yeah
It’s basically a college class(ran by local community college) so that’s interesting
Is this anecdotal or supported by an admissions website?
Anecdotal from just what I've noticed from my current school, old school, reddit, and youtube
I noticed that all of the people that do those really hard math courses in high school seem to go to at most 1-3 T50s and no T20s
Granted who knows, maybe it's selector bias but I still do go through a lot of videos and I really haven't seen any exceptions to the rule yet
What's the sample size?
Once again, I do recognize that this is just a correlation and it could be caused by my own biases but it's still there
In my current school I believe we get about 20 or so people per year who finish calc BC before Junior year and in my old one it was about the same. Of those kids I'd say that I only really knew 10 from each school so about 20 but those 20 kids did end up saying that nobody else in their same situation got accepted into any T20s and only a few T50s
As for Youtube idk, probably a solid 5-10. Then on reddit I'd say the same amount
It might be worth mentioning this to give proper context to people like @wanton talon.
I’m aware
So a sample size of 30-40 from my own experiences and including the experiences of those students It'd be 50-60 total that share that experience
From my pov there have been lots of people who have taken that class at my school and have gotten into t50 schools
This is something that I did say. I mentioned that there was a very strong correlation a couple of times
I didn't mention my own biases but I think it's safe to assume that everyone has some level of bias lol
It could be a situation from your own school specifically
I'm not certain, I know that for at least 2 different schools though that is not the situation
Well, specifically that it's an anecdote instead of a statement of fact because of a correlation because..."correlation does not imply causation."
Borrowing the overused phase from a statistics class.
I know about this statistic but even if we apply my advice it'd still help out in this example:
If we had no idea why this sort of thing was going on, it'd be best for us to just not go outside and buy ice cream that much during June and July. Due to you not feeling the need to go outside for ice cream that often it may also reduce the impulse to go out to the beach (at least in RI it was a very common thing where if you went out to an ice cream shop you also would usually hang around a beach). In that situation, we didn't know the causation but it still helped
Likewise, we don't know the causation of this but it'd still help to directly lower the amount of correlation as while it may be unrelated, it may end up affecting the actual causation of why this occurs ultimately reducing the chances something goes awry
They both count for the same things, and have the same prerequisite, the same syllabus, in the same course description. They’re just offered by two different departments and it’s confusing me. If you take it in the math department though, you have to use Proctorio on your computer if you take it online, which is very annoying.
Gohar always mentions that you can see his course schedule in the bio; where is that?
ima be honest i don’t watch gohars videos so idk 💀
Except this isn't ice cream. It's someone's education.
My point, as above, is make it clear that it's a personal anecdote involving a correlation with a relatively small sample size. It's no more an established fact that these correlations, and as someone who talks about the value of statistics, you should know this.
With this context, the other person can evaluate your claim before using it as the basis of an important educational decision. (Example: #💡ㆍacademic-advice message)
Discord is the easiest way to communicate over voice, video, and text. Chat, hang out, and stay close with your friends and communities.
You should, his shorts have been really helpful lately. In one week he showed how to fix your internet and the best study spots. Truly the goat.
What de class should i take, pick 2
history of rock and ethical hacking
if you need GE classes and sociology is one of em, then take that
Python Programming and Human Communication
Except ik stats already and yeah ap stats would waste an elective slot for me
Yeah I have a friend who does that and she said it works together
Idk cuz like in this chat alone
for example you have selina
who got into both mit
and oxford
and I think she got up to like diffy eqs(further than multivar)
not it might just be that they count as both psych and math
thats what i meant
ah
i think they’re honestly for different advising departments
that’s what i got from it anyway
if you’re being advised by the psychology department, you taking psy42, the math department, math 42
are these de? i'd say knowing basic computer information systems is pretty good. And for you as a med, do like first aid, cpr, and emergencies
im alr 1st aid certified
ye
why are those the only classes you can take?
cuz thats whats offered at my cc
but ill check with the other college
idk
small ass college 💀
bro i literally have over 14k classes to choose from 💀
that includes labs tho
what cc
no wtf
not doxing myself but you don’t live here so they won’t accept you anyway unless you special admit
you have to be in the “service area”
wait rlly
Is that for special admit?
Or DE?
or both
^
there is none lol
Oh ok
But yeah I definitely recommend a computing course. Idk about the other one.
And I understand that, but it'd also be disingenous to assume that there's absolutely no relation between the 2 items at all. After all a correlation is a form of relation and yes it's a relatively small sample size but this is something that is also nigh impossible to test.
And in the former example I was giving a tip on how someone could have their lives saved by not getting ice cream. In that scenario it wasn't "just ice cream" it was a matter of staying alive or not from a relatively rare phenomena.
I understand that you feel that this correlation may not be related but the 2 fields have a relation being that the admissions officer directly sees the classes you're taking. It's not like Internet explorer or Murder rate where the deciding factor of that correlation is impossible to see. We know what that deciding factor is, we can see it and directly observe it. It's also not something that is purely random like these charts it is something that is decided upon by human hands.
The cause of the correlation isn't pure chance, humans had a hand in making that correlation occur. Even if it's not directly caused it is at the very least being impacted by the decisions of humans that have the ability to make it not that way but don't for one reason or another
Don't CSUs require some form of a rhetoric and communication class to be taken?
Either way take History of Rock for your social science elective and ig sociology for humanities
But yeah red, most of the time statistical probability is useful to note if the items that are being correlated are of a random nature
This, is not of a random nature, it is something that is directly caused by the hands of humans. Yes there's a chance of something being completely random causing it but there is still the far greater probability of human error or humans being humans
what
When humans are involved in the consequences of a statistic, it is no longer a good idea to assume it's just a pure random correlation as time and time again has proven that that is almost never the case
why is this going into human nature now
Philosophy
Does anyone know how difficult AP Calculus BC and AP Physics is because I want to take it and I would like to know the difficultly and how much studying you need for either of those AP’s
I believe AP Physics C is widely regarded as the hardest AP class lol
And Calc BC too
@meager knot are those all the classes you're taking or are you taking more?
oh really
Im only taking those AP’s
And the other classes are just normal English history etc
Yeah you'll be fine
As for how much studying?
Uh I think per day you'll be fine with like half an hour for both classes of actual studying if you're really interested in them
Which it sounds like you are interested in them
And that's also if you want to guarantee the A lol
Oh ok thank you for your help
Then for AP Exam season I'd say you want to do about an hour per day for the month leading up to AP Exams at least
Ok thanks a lot
Of course there's a relationship. That's by definition the correlation. It's also not impossible to test. The data collection is the hard part.
The discussion isn't focused on the existence of a correlation. It's about proving causation. You don't have statistical evidence to support a causal relationship. It's anecdotal, as you've stated, and you don't have data on the decision-making process. You only know the exposure and the outcome.
Spurious correlation is basic statistics and has just as much evidence to support it (there's no evidence). Don't let your emotions get the best of your knowledge.
Post hoc fallacy. This is an assumption unsupported by evidence.
What?
I was making a joke
Dude said "why is this going into human nature" and i repsonded "philosophy"
Ion see what fallacy is in play by me making a joke about the nature of the conversation
But go awf
ap physics 1 2 or c?
For me it’s called AP which is the most difficult
So whichever is the most difficult
Do you have Physics experience?
If not then you would do Physics 1 or 2 first before jumping into C
I’m taking a physics course over summer
ima assume that your school would offer ap physics 1 because thats the most common
ye
Well idk about doing it over the summer lol
I responded to this message out of convenience (and because fallacies appear in philosophy), but it applies to the last few.
The logical fallacy is about causality.
https://www.logicallyfallacious.com/post-hoc.html
What class of science do you take as a senior anyway
Finally i didnt get rejected from an shadowing /intern/research
WHOA how’d u do that?
I can take this course in this upcoming summer i think
Cold email
So far, my count is 50ish with 4 people replying
Prof
did you just email professors at your local university?
what type of courses/ec’s do you need to take in order to land one?
thats so cool
What class of science do you take as a senior anyway
really
None
All of em
NOT EVEN AP BIO OR SOMETHING
Well for this one, i need bio cuz its like a formal thing
Yeah?
Not rlly
imma try that when i get to hs next year
IT ISSSS
Not for me
Like what’s after Ik bio,chemistry,physics what’s after
Not just watch them, i get to do stuff
AND LEARN ABOUT EVERYTHING THEY’RE DOING
Ap chem, ap bio, ap whatever
💀
BRUH
why are you here
WHY R U HERE
Yeah
ap environmental science?
apes lowkey stupid
says u
like if you have to take it then take it
imagine being in alg 2
but apes is a free class and honestly not that interesting
wat
imagine not taking the max math offered
bruh
U know each other?
i want to have a social life
HE KEEPS BULLYING ME
Then get 1
FR
Or 2
HAHA
Or however
EXPLAIN HOW I CAN DO CALC BC
U just do it
AND STILL HAVE A SOCIAL LIFE
Not that hard
IN MIDDLE SCHOOL
U just take the class
exactly
…. BRUH
sounds like a skill issue to me
Fr
I dont think its august yet
….
HEY
I can be
Bruh
but not rn
no im not
ok i’m not even gonna argue with you at this point
thouht so
Then dont?
U GUYS ARE SO MEAN
Y u yelling?
IM NOT
it's a discord server
….
dot dot dot fr
Depends on what you want to do
If STEM then you're doing one of the big 3 that you're missing so that means either:
Physics
Chem
Biology
And if you're missing one you're usually taking Physics C
If not STEM then nothing
What do degree needed for law
None
Law is its own school, you need to do a prelaw program and pass a couple of tests and then you're in law school
If you want a degree though, I would encourage one in history, business, econ, or philosophy
well you actually have to get a degree lol
Robotics vs CS
sus
Robotics includes other fields of engineering, CS only focusses on Comp Lang and Coding
up to you
Duck signature reply
Why is this png so weird?
lol
lol
My phone sucks
@austere tulip btw bro khan academy English grammar playlist is enough to understand grammar rules and general English ?.
Then get a tutor
I want quick lessons. Here people take long course like 6 months
Ok
Know any native speakers? That’ll help improve your english
What?.
Well native or have learned english really well. Someone who know the grammar structure and general rules
Idk
I’m currently in AP Calc BC and signing up for math classes next year. These are the classes: Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Calc 3, Differential Equations with Linear Algebra - all of these classes are 1 semester long. Can someone please help me in choosing two classes I should take next?
WHOA ur school has a lot of options
personally i would do calc 3 and differential equations this year
and then differential equations with linear algebra and linear algebra next year
so ur like wrapping up calculus before u get started on other stuff
Thank you so much! That is very helpful!
Should I take accounting or economics as my #1 elective next year
what are your requirements/which do you like better?
Honestly I feel like both would benefit me im undecided idk
You should take economics, I took economics my sophomore year, and I really enjoyed it. It's not the easiest elective, but I feel like you learn a lot of things that will help you branch out into more things in the world of finance and business.
@cold knoll Your in 9th grade and taking AP Calc BC?
Wow
You must be really smart
I’m taking AP Calc BC in my senior year
cause that’s when I can 😭
AP Calc AB; AP Biology; AP Comparative Government or AP U.S Government; AP Macro & Micro; Latin 4 Honors; Dance
Junior Schedule?
Oh and AP Lang
I personally wouldn’t do that
Reasons? Lol
It doesn’t seem different yk
It just seems like every other schedule
I’m interested in finance or business
Any tips
Ok?
On what
Good classes to make my selection diverse
But also in-line with my intended field of study
Thats for u to pick
Ok? And what makes ur schedule unique from the others?
Well economics and calc
Plus LATIN is unique
So? Other people do a foreign lang
what do you mean by different tho
Like how could I diversify it
Something that sets u unique
Put ur own flare on it
Take a look at mine
Okay thanks
Okay thanks but ima put accounting is a backup elective it’s like 20% chance I get it tho
Khan academy english is really bad
in my opinion
I'd instead recommend continuing with duolingo
Practice english with a fellow friend
And use khan academy as ONE of the resources
Its def probably not enough
Ok So here's what I recommend, and what is usually the regular lineup. After calc bc, do Calc 3 and Linear Algebra. Then do both the Diffy Eqs courses.
That's a ffine schedule. You have a good amount of Aps
Thanks
You don't have to make your schedule too unique
the point of a school schedule is not to make it unique
that's more extracurriculars
As long as you focused on what YOU like
and as long as you have the rigor that you can have
that's great
I mean the person who said that your schedule was bad is also doing like 13.5 classes a day
Are you sure that’s fine because someone else told me to do Differential equations before linear algebra?
Really?
Okay I’m really involved in debate as well as mock trial but I love economics and finance and my school unfortunately doesn’t offer any extracurriculars like that
I mean it usually doesn't go like that
People go from calc bc to multivar calc(calc 3)
And then they do linear algebra
and then diffy eqs
I was thinking Calc 3, diffy eqs, then linear algebra
You could do that
Im just recommending what is usually the way it's done
usually the prereqs are set up like that too
Hmm yeah you’re right
its interesting that your school doesn't do that
I’ll take that into consideration, thank you!
No problem!
But it's so cool you're doing calc bc freshman year.
Also just remember in case someone tells you, colleges will not reject you because you're doing college courses after calc bc.
Thanks! That makes me feel a lot better
You’re also in 9th right?
yeah!
How do you know about what classes to take next?
Math
Oh because I'm not as adv as you but like i will reach calc iii and for us we have it grouped together with linear algebra
I also have a friend in a different state
and he'll be finishing calc iii and lin alg junior year
Oh nice
and then do dify eqs senior year
what math are you in rn?
Your school doesn’t let you skip?
it did
I already like skipped a bunch
skipping in high school is a pain
for us
u can't just do one test
you have to do all the semester tests
and then the final
Yeah same for me
i had a friend skip alg ii and it took one sem just for testing
wow
so yeah i'm too lazy lol
One semester for testing?
what the
but like yeah he got into precalc the second semester
hs
?
idk
I'm choosing classes I need help ;-;
My current list is:
Calc 1/2, AP Comp Sci, French 2, Dance 2, and Honors Euro Lit
and I need to decide between Bass Clef, APUSH, and MUN for my last course.
idk what to choose ;-; all my friends are tugging in different directions and i'd be glad with any of the three
Just do all of em
should i take an AP class or should i take a college class through my schools dual enrollment program? i've been weighing the pros and cons of both sides but i can't decide
lmao 💀 I cant cause my schedule is packed I can only have 6 classes
I wish tho
Just make space
In doing like 16 classes next yr
wha- how
my school allows max 9 classes including 0 period
I physically cannot make space bc I do a sport which takes up 7/8 period
and 0 period classes are not my interest
There is no “max”
So? That doesnt stop u
When ur school gives a max it’s just a recommendation
Some schools do actually have a maximum
Like they won’t let you sign up for more
Excluding de? Sa? Online?
Summer?
Oh yeah I guess if you want to do that sure but you would have to do that entirely outside of the school’s view
Because at least for mine, they HEAVILY discourage people from doing it
Like if you want to skip a singular subject they’ll allow it
Our school is hard enough already
And doing too many academics will just burn people out
Especially cause sports are required and (kinda sorta) an art
Interesting
Yeah so not every school has the same criteria although I’m sure im in the minority in this statement
Cause my school is weirddd
I think my school is kinda normal with a lot of opportunities if u know what ur doing
A lot of people say that our school offers nothing but that couldnt be farther from the truth
I think that their not looking in the right place and not increasing their perspective
no literally no teachers teach before or after the set hours for periods
Great, same for us
I do 10 classes rn
then how do you take 16 classes
Is it 16 classes in the same school or do you seek education from ROP, dual enrollment, etc
I do 0-6 rn and the others is college, uni, ROP
What’s SA
Special admit
Huh? My school doesn’t have that
Did u ask?
We do AP DE and honors
I never heard of it until now
No CTE?
oh ok that makes sense. I might take classes thru colleges. I thought u meant 16 classes thru your hs alone 😭
CTE?
Well.. next yr its 0-6 + 1 online, sa, de, uni, rop
Career technical edu
No
Are you from the states?
I go to private school in the southeast and no school I know of have anything like that
Then take classes from the other schools that offer it
My school won’t allow us to do that
Did u ask
Public schools are separate from my private school and when I tried to take a class at a public school I was told no because of zoning
If you go to a private school (like a application based one) then you don’t need to take more courses
If its a good school with established relationships with other colleges, you’re fine
Oh, then maybe not?
Go off of what your college counselor suggests
Yea I am applying to a stem school
Or like ask them
Ohh one of those magnet programs? My cousin went to the science and math one in North Carolina
Our college counselor sucks
Yea
😬
I really want to go to a Top 20 University but everyone at my school stays in state
Maaaybe apply to a different school
Because you really need your high school connections to get into t20s
Yea that’s why I am hoping to get into the stem school because they have several college counselors who went to ivy leagues and have massive connections
I applied to St. Paul’s and got waitlisted but if I don’t get into the stem school I will apply to Exeter or Andover next year
Oh damn you’re really going for the best high schools then
Best of luck i guess
Andover and Exeter are such nepo baby schools—
Yea that’s why I am worried
I hope to go to the stem school which is way more my speed
Like ofc they’re great schools but the people there are SO SMART but also all of them have insane connections
Yea
Also literally if one person gets sick the entire school gets sick
Cause its like 70% boarding or something insane
College Admissions is so unfair
Yea
Like being white middle class and not being first gen my chances are 💩
Actually Andover and exeters admissions got nuked last year
Huh
Cause harvard realized they were feeder schools
So like they only had about 6 people total get into harvard which is super super small considering most of them are legacy and/or have insane connections
Like how are all the “smart” people also sons and daughters of millionaires
Welcome to private school lol
Yea where I’m from if you don’t u won’t get into college
My school is a feeder to brown and we’re top 30 in the country I think
My parents sacrifice a lot
Where do you go? If you don’t mind me asking
One of my friends dads won a Nobel peace prize and just didn’t tell us—
So my school is kinda the “liberal arts college” of private high schools but hey its still really good
Yeah like the fancy award thingy they give out to the smartest people every year
It was for his work in the UN to ban one specific type of land mine
That’s insane I have a kid in my class who’s dad made like 10m a year but he died from cancer sadly
Yeah, a girl who I know in my class is literally googable
Wow
Liek if you search her family name it comes up as “top 15 richest families in (her country)
Did you have to apply for ur school
(Her family owns basically the entire electrical grid)
Yeah our acceptance rate is around 10%
I think maybe 8%? Somewhere around there
I know the year I applied it was 8%
But that was during covid so a LOT of people were trying to transfer
Is ur school in Massachusetts? Or like Connecticut
That’s crazy
Oh yea
Best state for education I believes
So yeah if you don’t get into your stem school and you apply out def apply to safeties as well
Because oh my god PA and PE are kinda insane
Yea I honestly could have got in Choate or Deerfield but I didn’t apply
I mean I don’t want to sound conceited but I was up there with the applicants
Especially Deerfield, that place is like sports capital
Saint Paul’s?
You never know that for sure tbh
True
The high school process is equally messed up as the college one
Ik
Especially if you’re a white dude
God knows that all of the private schools are half white and half asian
Yeah well unfortunately it is so
More socioeconomic status
They’ve gotta fill quotas somehow
Ik Asians are so disadvantaged when it comes to application la
I mean to even know about private hs though you’ve gotta be above a certain point (or I guess in a metro program)
Hahhahaha…hahaha…..hahaha……..
Yea
I mean they put a ton of pressure on them because of stereotypes and stupid Bs
I watched a video on it which was super interesting
thats kinda stereotyping tho
tbh my parents kinda gave up it's all me now lol
🙄
I’m half white and half Chinese so like its not gonna be pretty for my applications to college
The batshit insane amount of ec’s i do
And also the fact that my hs is literally a feeder—
Guys
Where
I’m getting into accelerated English sophmore year
2 or 1
BU, MIT, Princeton, Cornell, duke (or brown? I forget honestly)
Which is nothing compared to my friends
Junior year is usually when you take AP Englsih Lang
Some of them are like 10th gen harvard legacies
Damn I’ve got Vanderbilt, UCLA, Boston College and that’s it
I’m not that smart to take AP English
WTF
Yeah—
Like seriously they must have been pilgrims
Its 10th gen for both undergrad and the medical school
Wow
;-; welcome to New England private schools
“Only” 7 people this year got into brown and “only” 3 got into Colombia
I mean i doubt it
But like…..that’s a crap ton of legacy
And yk another one of my friends mom is a head of some stem department at harvard as well
We haven’t had a person from my school go Ivy in 6+ years
….
Maybe you’ll be the next person
we get like 2 or 3 in every year
🤞
this year was wack tho
our school is also lowkey mid
we just have good students a lot of the time
they let us have a lot of freedom
Maybe it’s like immigrant mentality but my parents pay a shit ton of money for my education and I need to get into a good college
fr
private school?
Yea but they sacrifice a ton
All my friends are well off though so they just take over their parents business and don’t need to go to a really good college just somewhere in state
ikwym
my school costs a Tesla per yearrrr 🙃
Just for day students
Mines not that bad haha
Not even boarders
Are you FA
damn
i mean we have money but not THAT much money lolol
we can pay for college tho
like top collee
if needed
Yea same
Nope
Its just the connections
Agreed but then again you almost need it to guarantee a shot at top schools
like yeah they give a boost but like idk
eh
not really
think about it
But what it is right now is just highway robbery
Yea
out of like
70k for what
12k seats
Like how good is it
Are you really just paying for connections or quality education
connections imo
I mean the education is kinda insane at my school at least
which aren't worth 70k
Like it’s so much better than the public
you can find a quality education almost anywhere
But its not worth the 70k
it depends on the public ig
skull emoji
My school has literally fantastic education and like said, I love it so much
our public even isn't that good
some teachers are rlly rlly good tho
im lucky i have them
My parents are originally from New England and we are moving back up for education
And i can totally see how and why the school would cost a lot for tuition cause there’s a lot of effort in maintaining the school and everything
But 60k for a DAY STUDENT? Cmon
That’s too much
its more about what you do at the school
Like public schools suck where I am from in the rural south
than where you go
honestly
might be a bad opinion
but its my opinion
and the same applies for college (duh)
especially for college
Fair but the opportunities at private schools are just bigger and there’s more of them
eh true
Yea
Its just easier to make connections
Like its a path of least resistance type situation
yeah
Also in a way I feel like it’s bragging rights
People from Exeter seem very snotty
Or like uptight
fr
its hard to stand out
But they think they are very good above everyone else
Oh you have no idea
I know people who went there and they went from being super sweet to so goddamn stuck up
Really? That bad
Like “oh you only go to ___? Well I go to PA”
Like shut up
My school is still really really good
frfrfr
Ik a girl who went to Hotchkiss and turned into a bish
Groton people are pretty bad too
She was very sweet
DO YOUR HW
But honestly I always fire back with the “oh, hahaha, i got in actually but i didn’t feel like it was a good enough school for me :)))”
Or the “oh i know someone who got in! He goes to my school :))))”
yea
Gooooooo
that stings the ego
Only way to deal with them sometimes
You can’t convince me daddy didn’t pay some of those kids in
fr tho
Like not saying it’s all rigged but yk
Yeah….
that's why you dont go to private school
well no
its worth it
sort of
but like i said its hard to stand out
if that's something you want to do
Honestly its the sport recruits kids who i don’t like more
Wait why
Cause they just kinda don’t deserve to go to the school imo cause its high school sports, like no one cares
also sometimes you get unfairly capped because they're like "oh we want to limit kids coming from x school"
If you’re good at sports then great
bc like yk
there are different types tho their is like PEA, and then less known like Blair, and then run down ones
FR
But if you get priority over other students and you have B grades but just cause you’re able to throw a ball you get accepted? Ew no
just because you're able to throw a ball 💀
fr
pecan speaking facts here
and again stupid quotas
Yeah when I tell people I go to private school they either assume i”m really smart or that I’m really dumb—
Like u can only have so many kids from this state or whatever
Ikr
exactly
yk how they split it up into regions and all that
FR
it gives like new mexico people such an unfair advantage
idk
east coast is defo most competitive
then west
probably southeast then
and then idk
I wish they took all that out of the picture and looked at numbers and specific circumstances
Yessss T^T
Like I’m already past the hs application so it doesnt really matter for me anymore but stillll
Like if your grades are lower but u had to work a job to support your family not jsut because you are blank race you must’ve struggled
East coast private schools are kinda on steroids
Like the nyc ones are terrifying
For sure
I’ve heard horror stories
And commonwealth (well known in New England) is teeny but SUCH a pressure cooker
Like everyone I know who goes there is depressed
Yeah exactly
I’ve heard that some kids are told to be quiet if they are suicidal
Like to suck it up
we literally get 2 or 3 kids into ivies an year and im like "how tf am i supposed to beat everyone at my school AND almost everyone in the east coast"
Because their future matters most
the class of people i'm in rn is like
fr super competitive
much more so than the last at least 8 classes
Yeah I’ve heard that at different private schools as well
so im lowkey scared
I wish my school was competitive everyone is so apathetic
im big on ecs tho
Thankfully mine is super mental health conscious (almost too much imo) but its better than the alternative
It’s so sad
no one else has an extensive ec
East coast parents are just a different breed of intense
It has the results though and that’s the scariest part
Because it works
But I feel like there is a difference between New England East coast and rest of east coast
Yikes
Yeah its specifically New England lmao
Because people in Mass are freaking insane when it comes to education
Like everyone in my town are ivy grads and met their spouse at their college
I want that lmao
Its so weird though
Cause when I was younger my perspective on acceptance rate was so skewed
Cause like everyone went to a top school
Y
Cause like everyone’s parents went to Princeton
So you just assume that everyone goes to Princeton
Yk?
Yea
That’s my dream school
But I don’t think it will ever happen
I would kill to go there
It’s kind of a warped world view though because some kids view getting into a trade school like the holy grail
Nice, good luck 🙏
How do you know that you'll be fine studying econ at college level? Tbh I enjoy studying it at my school... But an ao once said that if I don't like maths I prob shouldn't take econ as clg major... And I hate maths... So??
WHAT SHOULD I DO?
You have applied math. You have advantages to explore computer science fields also.
Yeah ... But that's my quest rn
Can someone give me a list of electives I should take in y11 & 12? I want to get a job as a research scientist for space or marine studies. What should I pick?
Will I die if I become a soldier?
No and yes
Depends on your country but i mean the chances are a lot higher than if you aren’t in the army
Oh ok, thanks
What major(s) are you interested in?
Are both differential equations classes focused on ordinary differential equations?
Personally, I would take calc 3, differential equations, and finally linear algebra.
Linear algebra isn't strictly necessary for the other courses, and depending on how it's taught, it might be a class all about matrices.
I would take the differential equations with linear algebra class last or maybe not at all depending on the course description.
Yeah I agree with red. Calc III is one of the fundemental building blocks for future mathematics education alongside differential equations
Take calc III, differential equations, then I'd say that if you're not too interested in linear algebra, you should probably take a stats class next as a strong background in statistics is useful for pretty much your whole life
I’m interested in Math and computer science. I signed up in this order: Calc III, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations.
Another thing: I’m taking two math classes next year- AP Stats (year long) and Calc 3 and Linear Algebra(each class is a semester long)
Great!
sophomore in calc ab, bc next year, and calc 3 senior year.
is taking linear algebra over this summer and diff eq over next summer at community colleges a good idea or are these courses at community colleges considered watered down
No that's a good idea
It should be fine
Tho Do you have to do both AB and BC
Because those are realy redundant
and u could then get lin alg and diffy eqs during the school year
or get stats
Anyways but yeah go ahead do it over the summer
I'm planning maybe try that too. Community college courses are easier but they still teach you the content u need to know
fr
I wanted to take bc this year
but small school
I need 3 years of math in hs to graduate and they couldn't guarantee they'd have enough ppl to start a calc 3 class
so they made me take ab this year since it would guarantee me atleast 3 years of math
it would need to be outside of school so after school since my school doesn't offer those classes
and I'm alrd taking the following classes next year so I'd rather take the math courses over the summer rather than take them on top of this workload:
AP Lang
AP Calc BC
AP Chem
AP Chem Lab (extra period of ap Chem required by my school)
AP Stats
AP Physics C Mech
Honors Spanish Comp/Conv (my school's version of pre-ap spanish)
Principles of Engineering (Dual Enrollment CTE Course)
and ofc gym and lunch
Picked accounting as my alternative
Good choice!
I got a question
Go on
So I’m in academic English but I have asked to get into accelerated English back in December asking my counselor and teacher and I needed a A- average third quarter and fourth third quarter I got above a A- average getting a A and now we just started fourth but my teacher said I’m on the right path and I’ve been working hard
Do you think if I get another A this quarter
I’ll get into level accelerated English
Btw I got a B- for the first two quarters
Umm honestly I'm not from us so I have no experience in that... But I think if u get another A you'll get into that accelerated English...
But I think @ripe geyser and @austere tulip can help you properly..
I don’t think we will be able to give you a clear answer here. You should probably ask your counselor + teacher because they will know exactly how it works
Yea def just wanted to see others opinions
A week before quarter ends ima ask the counselor
Because I know I have to get at least an A- average but ima get a better grade
My gpa 3rd quarter was a 3.4
Gonna try to get a 3.6-3.9 this one
Are you on a quarter system?
Ok so semester? Your end grade should be the only one that really matters, unless your school does it a different way
Ok. You have an okay chance. Though your average is lower then the A- if you get an A this next semester. B- is like 2.7 i think. Though they might like that your grades trended upwards/if your teacher likes you
Yea I have a good attitude with my teacher but I got a A third quarter
So as long as I get another Grade higher than 92 95% should get moved up
The fact that you've worked rly hard to get into that eng course... Is pretty impressive to ur teach and counselor considering their feedback(they said youre doing good) ig you'll be fine... But still ask ur counselor abt it
And get an A for next quarter/semester whtevr is the system there
Yea after my English quiz she said you worked hard this quarter so I definitely know my attitude is good with her
Mhmm you'll be fine.. keep hustling. gl:)
Ima try to get into history accel mid sophmore year
Next year
Like after first quarter ima plan to get a A+ and ask to move up
Yeah goodluck with that too! You got this:)
i dont know how to feel about taking accelerated geometry in 9th grade
it seems way too hard
geometry for me is probably the easiest math ever you should be fine
oh ok
😔
Geometry is honestly the easier style of math
not for everyone of course, but on a certain level, it's easier to understand than say algebra or precalc
Oh wow. Yeah I can definitely see why you would want to do it over the summer. Yeah that makes sense
I'm guessing this is junior year?
Omg you're a fellow engineer yay
is your principles of engineering class PLTW?
Yeah I think you can if you continue the fourth quarter.
You have of course shown lots of improvement, so I would say yeah
I recommend doing accelerated Geometry
Despite the fact that geometry is actually easier because through proofs it requires more depth
the thing is i have to do it
it is kinda difficult
im doing proofs rn
like you just go from the quadratic formula to prove these triangles congruent
So I think geometry, like Elipsis and Bettername said
Is easier
However, it's just thrown in there without any proper context to justify it, so it's often hated for being difficult
i love math ngl but geometric proofs are hard fr fr
accelerated algebra 1
Oh ok That's good
So yeah I'd say do not worry
Geometry is however a subject you might have to study for
and spend more time on
But yeah I think if you put in the effort and study it should be fine
Proofs get easier like after a time
You think they're hard at first because you haven't been taught proofs before
But once you learn them it's great
only like equation type proofs
but other than that no
Logical thinking through being able to prove is one of the most important steps of math
We are doing proofs in analytic trigonometry in Pre-Calculus right now, and the proofs that we did in previous math courses like Honors Geometry is really coming in handy
I failed those proofs and they did not help me
i got a 45% on that test
and I retook it for an 80% only bc the pipe at my school burst and we were all sent home early
and then I already knew the questions and what to study (he makes us go and copy down what we do wrong to study it, but he doesn't give us a different test)
so
yeah
Is ap chemistry hard?
I heard that it's hard...
They say you need to take AP Calc or something in order to take the class.
Not sure if that's still a thing.
W
ye
ye
The ap calc requirement is for ap physics, not for chem
Right... You aren't wrong... Sorry!
It's all good
I'm taking ap physics c, the calc based one and it is kicking my butt
I'm taking ap chem next year
Hey, I was wondering if someone knowledgeable on the situation could help me here. I'm planning on applying to MIT next year, and I was wondering if my course load for next year could help my chances. Next year, I'm taking ap chem, ap french, concurrent enrollment english, dual enrollment calc 3 and diff. equations, and concurrent physics 2 electricity and magnetism (calc based)
I am taking ap calc and ap physics c mechanics this year as well
It’s definitely impressive but typically junior year is the year youd want to go all out in courses in
Because colleges can’t see senior spring so for all they know your grades plummeted to Ds
Welp, that sucks
Well, isn't a thing where a college can accept you given the condition that grades are kept up until the end of the year?
I'm no expert on the situation though
Same 😂
I have a C atm
I mean if you straight up fail then yeah they can withdraw acceptance
oh yeah on a random note
apparently like this guy got into harvard, and then his grades started to drop a lot
and he got an email from his admissions officer saying that if he doesn't pull up his grades, his offer would be revoked
I had no idea they did that
Yep
That doesn’t happen if you slip from As to Bs, but if youre in C or D territory that will def happen
yeah
Yeye, it's one of the hardest AP courses offered
It's usually agreed that the toughest AP courses are Chem, Physics C, and Calc BC
AP chem is hard?
So should I prob change my schedule for next year?
AP US History
AP Physics I
AP Bio
AP Comp Sci A
Algebra II + Pre-Calc
- some credit stuff
if u want
I just dunno if I should do Alg II and pre calc in the same year tho
maybe take precalc and calc in senior year
idk
gotta get calc somehow
u dont have to
It’s better to because of the uni i wanna go to prefers you be ahead
which uni
me who'll be taking AP Chem and Calc BC at the same time scared
