It's not bad enough where I would be failing the class
A teacher that’s good for your brother might not be good for you
If you absolutely want to take DE, then take it over the summer or do it alongside the school year
But do not make one of your central blocks a DE
How old are you rn?
13
So here’s the thing: people change a lot between 13-18
I'm aware
You don’t know if you’ll remain forever interested in DE during that time period
You also don’t know if the profs will no longer fit your learning style cause it changed during that time period
Fair
5 years at that time period is a little under a 1/3 of your life
That’s a huge amount of set up you’re asking for
I know
Not considering that there’s often very low pay out
Look: take a DE class alongside another normal class
If you don’t like it, cool you can drop out
If you do like it then cool, you can replace a course next year with it
You just don’t want to be stuck in a situation where you’re forced to continue with DE
Hm
I’d say an intro to an art class
Especially intro to film
It’s generally easy and it’ll give you a good glimpse into a college schedule
If you want something more stem related, opt to not take a AP course and instead take it’s intro
So for example: you take AP bio and intro to chem instead of AP Chem and Intro to Chem
Understood
If you want something more creative then intro to creative writing is also good
Those are the 3 I’d say are good test classes but they’re not the best
The best test class is: going through the catalog and seeing which class is the most dope to you and taking it
Got it
I might just do a kind of a fun class then for my first DE
Thanks for the help
is ib lead hard
IB Lead?
I’ve never heard of that, what is it?
Do you mean MYP, DP, or CP?
no
I'm from Canada it called ib or lead
on of the 2
it's a program done all across the world
Never heard of Lead but I am taking IB as in International Baccalaureate
Is that what you’re referring to?
Send over the pamphlet for the program
It might be the IBDP but I’ve braved heard of it being called lead
I didn't get a pamphley
it was a presentation
that is the presentation
I'm taking it for grade 9
OOH
That’s a program that lets you go to both HS and college at the same time
It’s probably hard, and it’d be very hard for a 9th grader to take
It’s meant for an 11th grader according to their site
so i’m a rising sophomore and we’re choosing our classes next week for next year but i don’t know what to choose for my elective..i’m going to take ap seminar and ap world history but i also want to take a third ap. the only other ap options for sophomores are ap bio, ap hug, and ap environmental science. i do want to take both ap bio and ap environmental science eventually but idk if it would be too much this year with the other classes i’m taking. i’ve heard ap hug is pretty easy but i'm on the fence about whether its worth it or not. should i just take another elective that isn’t ap related?
lol sorry this is so long
Do you care for rank/gpa?
Not that it completely matters, but you don’t want to overload yourself either
yea
Mk
What other courses are you planning to take besides uh
Ap world and seminar
Like total
for science i have to take chemistry so i’m doing honors, pe (required), biotech (required), spanish 2, and algebra 2 honors
i think that’s it
and drivers ed
As long as you can balance, I think you’d be fine with doing ap hug too
It would just be a routine you’d need to get used to, I wouldn’t think it’d be an overload
alright cool thanks :)
What high school classes would help with someone hoping to become an attorney?
Mhm mhm
it literally does not matter
I am majoring in Cognitive Behavioral Neuroscience and Psychology, with a minor in music… and I plan on becoming an attorney
do what ever you want
I’m kind of law nerd. I plan on majoring and minoring in stuff that will help with the LSAT and law school.
I am also a law nerd
Don’t major and minor in classic stuff
for admissions purposes, you wanna stand out
I’m thinking of philosophy for a major.
Can tell by the pfp
Would philosophy work?
Well you’re doing psychology.
i’ve won my county championships every year i’ve done mock trial (since freshman year) and am the mvp most rounds i participate in
neuroscience
double major in psychology
but that psych is cognitive and behavioral specialization so its a BS not a BA
Philosophy majors score a blind test score of 158 on the LSAT. That can get you into multiple law schools; that’s pretty good for taking the test without knowing anything about it.
however, you wouldn’t really stand out (if you want to go to T50)
explore all options, and find other things you enjoy, don’t revolve your world around law because it’s a very small world (trust me I was like you at first)
Any law professor that has observed a philosophy major can testify about their better performance.
actually, that contradicts all experiences i’ve had with “law” professors
However, I still am a freshman; my goals this year should be grades.
ehhh
Really? Not what I’ve experienced.
your goal freshman year should be to explore a variety of different things and disciplines
Yeah
worry about college once your around 11th or 12th
for now, focus on your extracurricular
and find stuff that express yourself
I studied the law all over covid and now I am kind of maxed out as to what i have and have not seen in the legal field. If I didn’t have my other things, i would not be happy.
I guess you’re not wrong.
Well your focus should be your current college/LSAT.
imo some good extracurricular to do is to join clubs that you enjoy, do not just join every club
for me, i have an internship at UPenn
I’m currently in mock trial, debate, and the chess club.
it is
do u enjoy those clubs?
Most certainly!
good
have you thought of exploring out side of those clubs to, extend yourself beyond the logic and strategy all of those require?
you can try to ask for internship at colleges
that’s a good extracurricular
maybe a summer program about your major
Mock trial fuels my lust for the law. Meanwhile, I find the debate team a great place for all sorts of debate styles. And chess is…fun.
chess is fun
I’m still just a freshman…
i did a summer program as a freshmen
a lot idk programs are reserved for juniors and seniors
Yeah
well freshmen to sophomore
oh
Like what?
i did took a program from upenn during freshmen tho
at freshmen, i got into apcsa (somehow)
and this upenn program basically teaches apcsa
along with my school
i always suggest the arts first like music or ceramics
so i can get extra practice for ap exam
But the choir and drama kids are… uh… I’ll just leave it at that.
i used to be a choir kid 💀
💀
but i gave up cus my singing is shit
No I mean the ones at my school.
i joined choir for like 2 years during elementary to middle school
gave up after my 3rd year
elementary school choir is
awful
i did it 3 years in elementary school
did not know how to read music
Debate earns scholarships.
so as every other stuff
im currently a national honor society member of my school
and they offer great scholarships
they do?
I only get scholarships for my singing
and i’ve won mock trial and been a state mvp and stuff
okay nhs does offer scholarship lol
i’ve won my county in music and economics *competitions
good
the requirements are
I use this server as my 30 hours off volunteering
per month
my advisor accepts it as long as I show her what i did
Mock trial isn’t hard if you know what you’re doing.
^
Oh,
- high school senior
- active member of nhs and good standing
- have an nhs account verified by the adviser
- pursue a degree on an us college/uni
that’s basically the requirement for nhs scholarship
I’m usually doing openings and certain examinations. My team prefers me for my openings; I guess they’re good.
It depends if I’m cross-examining or not.
Sometimes direct.
I haven’t really done any pre-trial.
I get my fair share of refuting things in debate.
I killed the chat 💀
My mock trial team was trying to guess my sign
i’m at practice rn
bro
it’s not that hard 💀
in mock we have case packets with the authorities we can use, but besides that
it’s pretty easy
1-2 AP classes in 9th grade a good number?
honeskty
it’s illegal to take ap’s as a freshman here
so i’d say for sure
Hi, I have a question about AP coursework. By the time I apply to college, I will have taken 3 AP exams (calc bc, chem, and comp sci). As someone who also has substantial extracurriculars, will that be enough?
depends on major, scores, how many are offered, etc.
generally, if you had a lot offered and you didn’t take the opportunities, then it doesn’t look too too good
but if they weren’t you’ll be fine
the courses should also be in accordance with your major
what are your ecs?
MUN (at the international level), research internship, web development for 2 nonprofits, NHS, Operation Smile, and another research internship
And singing
Pre med
then idk
your ecs or your ap coursework don’t relate to your major
and although it isn’t essential
it’s important to have
yes ap chem but like
do you have other courses offered?
ap bio for example
uhh
is there anything you could do to strengthen the medical side of your application?
for example there are some good competitions for that stuff
Both research internships combine medicine and tech? Does that help
it does help, but you’re in tenth grade, aren’t you?
everything won’t work out the way you expect it
so have backups reason
Okay, there's a nearby hospital I could volunteer at as a backup
you should do that anyway
it helps
Take what you are interested in. Colleges can see through people who are taking easy AP’s just to take easy AP’s. Ur better off taking an elective u want to take then APHG
U might need to take a high school chemistry course before taking AP bio
Why would u prep
because ppl were saying that u cant get an easy A and i probably need to have some prior experience to do well
Next year I’m planning on taking, AP World; AP Lang; AP Envi Sci; Pre Calc; Latin 4; and a Dual Enrollment Government Class. Is this a schedule that shows rigor and is competitive with fellow juniors ?
Anybody know where I can take college courses for credit online?
I recently got accepted to a great high-school, and I'm kind of lost on what courses to take since I'm relatively young but advanced 2 grade levels. (10th Grade Courses) Advice on what classes I should take my first year?
yea waddup
do you already know what you wanna do in the future/what you're passionate about
yes, i would like to be an anesthesiologist
i love medicine
can you take bio and chem
yeah
are you taking physics
Sameee
Medicine is a W until the MCAT
I'm prob taking chemistry, it's so cool:)
Tips for taking honours Chemistry as a freshman?
pay attention and don’t slack off lol it’s tough
the content itself is easy
but my teacher at least is extremely strict
she teaches us like her ap classes
just keep a eye for detail
bc it matters a lot
but it won’t be too challenging
what’s available
you don’t need to pre
it’s a free class
everything’s good except for precalc- if you’re going for an unrelated major with no math involved, go for it, otherwise it is sort of bringing it down
u dont, apcsp is an intro to computer science and how it functions
but if you really want to prep
learn a coding language
Yup
Awesome rigor
as soon as the school year starts the ap courses are available during the first week
to sign up
or rather apply
See pins
It might actually be much more than you need
yeah, but what courses are available
Yeag
So do u have all ap courses available ?
I’m in high school and I have to pick between material processing and computers
Both are great
What do you want?
If you are confused
Id recommend computers
Material processing is probably gonna become machine operated
Tho I’ll be honest I don’t really know what that is
most are listed
You just learn how to make stuff using different types of materials and you learn about them to
ask your guidance counsellor as they understand what credits your school accepts + they should have knowledge about what college courses students from previous years have taken
I applied at my cc
Ok, then take as many and whatever u want to
Are you going into 9th grade?
I recommend 1-2 aps
10th grade: 2-4
11th: 3-6
12th:3-6
Again
If you’re also doing other stuff
Or dual enrollment
U can take less aps
How many Ap’s is considered too many/work overload
as many as you can't handlee
like for most people after 5 it gets overloaded
but some people do take 6-7 and are successful
Take as many as your school can offer and then reduce from there
yea
yes i’m doing dual enrollment as well
i think i would do 4-5
since i am planning to also do clubs
and my dual enrollment is on the campus
so i would have some time for myself too
instead of a jammed schedule
4 to 5 in 9th grade is too much
DE is very different from normal high school
As you only get 1-2 lectures every once in a while you have to do a lot more homework than you normally would do in HS
nothing is ever too much for everyone
you just have to know your capabilities
Yeah but when it comes to entering freshman year
And trust me I was like this once
A lot of rising freshman overestimate their capabilities
i mean you're right, but they can always drop out if its too hard (to honors eq)
True
Except if ur school is stingy about it
At my school u only have 10 days to drop out
You can always start failing the class and get intervention to reduce your difficulty!
won't it go on your transcript though
No lol
damn here it says "withdrawn failing" when that happens
Getting intervention to reduce your class difficulty will not appear on your transcript if you start failing your class before the semester ends
Well it’ll prolly do the same then, but at the very least you keep a 4.0 GPA
And most AOs will just find it to be a strange error for that msg to appear if a 4.0 GPA student has “withdrawn failing” on their transcript once or twice
true, but it still isn't a good look to have imo
It isn’t but it won’t effect the funny number after “GPA” which will arguably matter more
which language should i take in hs if i want to be a doctor or biomedical engineer: latin or spanish? (we were required to take 2 years of latin in middle school)
It doesn't matter
Take the one you think is more interesting or more applicable
I would encourage Spanish as Spanish is a language spoken by many Americans if you live in the U.S
if you live outside of the U.S then I'd encourage French as it's a pretty large lingua franca, particularly inside of Europe and Africa
It doesnt matter lmao
Hi so I have not taken many honors class in freshman year so in sophomore year I plan to take two APs the 1st one I already decided but can someone reccomend one easy one
Show
Sorry ?
What aps
Pick something that interests u
And is it recommended to take two if u never taken one before
Idk
Depends on ur work ethic
nono not 9th
i think my max for 9th is 3
i wna take it slow my first year
get a feel of everything
ah
3aps isnt slow
well
AP spanish lang doesn’t really count as an AP for me
in difficulty anyway
it was my first language
so i wouldn’t mind studying for 2 more
Whats the 2
I believe Spanish Lang more has to do with cultural comparisons than the language
So it'd still be a time investment on your end as you need to memorize certain features of other countries
If you'd like I'd encourage you instead pick up French I and go down that pathway for 2-3 years. You get to be a trilingual and you know the lingua franca of Europe which is a really useful skill to have
It'll help you communicate with many Europeans so if you ever decide to go to school there it'll definitely help you out
she’d only be able to get upto french 4 though
i mean, like everyone at my school is taking lang 3 rn with ap junior
she’d take 4 senior
She'd take AP senior
Ap junior? Thats not a thing
1–>2–>3–>4–>AP
Oh weird progression
In most schools its: 1->2->AP
U can take shortcuts, thats what im doing with spanish
most schools being schools in cali
For us, its 1-4 then ap
Weird
At my old school it was 1-3 then AP but in both school districts it was generally the same thing: you do AP junior year
yeah max is ap junior
Yeah
i mean you could take soanish 4 over the summer
and ap sophomore
but not recommended
for obvious reasons
Even then I actually don't see many people who made it into a T20 who took an AP lang tbh
I just noticed that
is there data on this stuff
No lol
like who took what ap courses and what colleges they got into
There's videos of people being accepted and shit though telling what classes they were in
(if you're curious the most common classes are AP Lang and AP Calc BC)
Outside of those 2 it's really a crapshoot and changes from person to person but those 2 APs are always consistant
yeah
Granted I've only seen like 6 of those videos or something
Bit much tbh
throughout hs thiufh
I shouldn't be talking I have to take 12 DEs and also focus on IBDP
Per yr?
rlly?
Yeah
ap ab and ap physics for me
That's extremely abnormal
and then all ap’s junior
At my school I'm considered very abnormal for taking AP Bio as well as AP World
except for gym
Are you interested in all of them
there's no need to take that many
See pins
made it before i started
if ____ wasn’t on the college app would i do it
like __ ec
Aite
Some people out there burn themselves at a pyre lol
even if it hurts my chances
That's what I'm doing myself cause my GPA is going to be at most a 3.7 at the end of Junior Year, assuming I do not get extra DEs and take any DEs over the summer
junior year fr
I pray that I do so I can continue on farming college creds and graduate within a semester of enrolling into my CC
the only one i don’t want to take there is apush so i might take cp u.s. history over the summer so i can take ap csa
Ew
Leo is writing the god damn communist manifesto in this bitch
Damn
I scared them off 💀
that sounds rough
For my senior year of high school I taking CSUExpstyrdgwtg then American government and economics then ROP emengercy medical responder then Intro AG mechanic then Adv Jrotc 4
literally me
Next year I will only have 5 classes
Damn
lol
I mean reallisticaly with the path I'm on I can actually graduate Junior year 💀
but I want my IB Diploma
Even if it's not going to help me out, like at all
goals bro fr
you got this
our school for some reason requires 3 years of history
i hate it
Same for us
But thats good
It gives space in ur schedule for other stuff
Most scchools do
usually:
1 year US History
1 year world history
1 year government
for us it’s one world, 2 us
max is honors —> honors —> AP
In my school the maximum is: AP World, APUSH/IB History HL, AP Gov/IB History HL
Any changes? (Computer science major)
Grade 10: fundamentals + precal
Grade 11: precal
Grade 12: cal
precalc for 2 years?
NPC ass schedule tbh
If you can, try to get precal done over the summer of grade 10 so when you reach grade 11 you take calc and then the year after you can take stats
I dont have stats :/
No regular statistics class or AP stats?
Just for this uni thats nearby
i know french too
i took it early middle school
i might js retake french 1 and call it a day to finish my second year requirement
Hello, anyone here?
Jump from 2 to 6 APs is ballsy but ok
I mean the schedule works
Wait actually nvm
Why are u taking summer classes
And of all the classes go set aside for sophomore to take over the summer it is DEFINITELY not precalc
Ok thanks 😊
No
not most schools
again, that's your school
most schools,
its 1,2,3,4,AP
or 1,2,3, AP
dw i'm also doing 6
same
except no ib
the schedule's really good
a lot of overloading seniors yr
but i guess u can handle it
Meh in my school it's technically this but language 3 and 4 aren't required. So it's supposed to go 1-4 AP but in reality most people in my school skip language 3 and 4 and insead jump into AP as there's really no point to the other 2 language classes
afaik supposedly once you get into language 3 it starts becoming more about cultural comparisons than the language itself
Oh
I'm in 3 rn
we're still learning stuff
cuz we did 1 and 2 in middle school
hu
In my school disrict you start spanish 1 in high school
Though in my old one you did Spanish 1 in 8th grade but I failed that cause of covid 💀
Thoughts about my course selections?

Free Period
You are trying to predict the future, that's a bad idea
Regardless, is there a math class you can take out of stats?
Cause going from AP Calc AB to BC is absolutely going to be frustrating for you if there isn't
I like your schedule
You also have a free period senior year
Meh we don't know what this mans' future is like
ig
See the pins but generally you don't need to take as many APs as you think you do to get into Ivy league schools
but like i take aps cuz i feel like i want more challenge
Well you're you
yeah idk about this person
We don't know much about this person
of course
If they're taking these classes solely to look good then that's a bit of a mistake
i def think they don't need both calc ab and calc bc
and yeah with the tought schedule, ap lang and lit could be swicthed out with like ap capstone
Regardless, I'd say to drop AP Bio to take AP Physics 1 or 2
no; unfortunately there isn't
Going from no physics experience to taking a Physics C is a veRY hard thing to do
yeah i kinda need the free period just to study and stuff; I hope I can use that time productively
i agree
And if you don't want to take AP Physics C over AP Bio then I'd encourage you replace Physics C with some other extremely easy course that you know doesn't give out much homework
This is to give you as much time as possible to apply to universities
As it stands the standard amount of unis is increasing year by year
In the early 00's I believe most people only applied to 1 or 2 unis
However nowadays the average is 5 I believe
and that's the average including people who want to just go to a local state uni or a CC
Excluding those the number is something ridiculous like 8 or 9 I believe
And it's only gonna get worse so you want to give yourself as much breathing room as possible senior year for you to apply to the frankly insane amount of Unis you're most likely going to be applying to
But I want easy APs
Any AP except comp science
The easiest AP is literally any that interests you
If there's none that interest you then bad news: most of them are going to be not very easy
My personal recommendation though are: AP Stats as it's useful in general, AP Psych as it's mostly memorization, and APES which is one of the APs of all time
There are rumors of AP Precalc also being easy but I do not know I haven't looked into that class
Ok ty
Ty
it probably is
the biggest troll ever done by CollegeBoard
fr though 💀
Biology or Math?
Which is better pls help I'm confus
Also which would give me a better chance to get into an ivy League
Subjects don't matter.
Whichever you like or you're interested in.. go for that
No connection with getting into an ivy
What is this question even asking?
How do honours classes in highschool and honour specialisation in college work??
To take either Biology or Math classes in high school or to major in Bio or Math?
if it's taking bio or math classes in HS I believe most states require both right?
And if it's to major in bio or math it really depends on which you find more interesting
If you can't, then maybe investigate a major in Biophysics instead
Also: do not think that your major is a determining factor for Ivy League admissions because it is not
There's no one single choice that'll improve your chances into an ivy, to improve your chances you have to make a series of choices over a long, drawn out period of time that arguably starts Freshman year
Well I'm not from the US
Here in India you choose between them
Ty for the answer tho
Appreciate it
Oh you mean pcm or pcb? Ryt?
Yes
Even if you take pcmb you still have to devote more focus to one of them so the choice still exists
Yeah.. honestly if you take pcm it's kinda advantageous because there will be certain topics in physics that will only be clarified by maths teachers.. and bio ppl will generally face issue there
But course selection ultimately depends on your interest
What are your interests? Ellaborate a lil and maybe I can help you figure out?
True
Although my mom is a math teacher so it isn't much of an issue in my case
Well
Currently I'm leaning more towards the biology side
But it's been switching up year round
I honestly really enjoy learning abt where stuff comes from and how things work
So biology is more of memorization
And maths is all about logics and stuff
I think you should take coaching for both subjects for a month, take a test after 4 weeks and see how you perform in them and then evaluate it? But it should be done before your sesh starts at school
One of my friend did this experiment and now he's satisfied with his course selection and he's a topper in his class even tho before he wasn't that great in studies.
Hmm
Well I have maths boards on the 21st
School probably gonna start around April 3rd Or so but I'm not really sure
Also check for how excited you are when you study for them throughout
That's really not an option for me tho cuz the coachings available near me force you to choose after you join
Ooh where are you from?
Well I'll see
First let me get done with this last exam of the session
Tysm for the help tho
Delhi as of now
Ohh
Try pw's yt tutorials
If coaching is not possible
And check for 2-3 weeks since a month isn't possible
to experiment.
Also in school , I believe you get an option to confirm your subject for a month
I have done that for physics
It's good but i get distracted when I do that
Ooh
Yeah it's temporary till final boards results are announced
Yeah use that time to explore
Find yt channels that'll help you
I'll see if I can
Maybe try vedantu, unacademy, byjus, akash's online coaching... There are many if you look up
Yeah
Ty for the help
I have to go sleep now gonna study in the morning
Not flexing (honestly) All of these coachings have contacted me so many times to advertise themselves I had to block their numbers lmao
Ty ty
Yeah that's true.. they do that I personally use them just for demo and all to just get idea and then I back out 😂😂
Infinite IQ move fr
😂😂
lmao
It's always been competitive
And it remains true that undergrad colleges usually do not matter as much as you think they do
This is true for certain schools, but if you want to generalize it this is definitely not true
One thing that indicates this is that 1. Trade schools are becoming more and more considered by high school students by the year and that 2. Trade careers are paying a lot more for students to do so
Also just as a piece of advice, it'd be a lot better to talk to you if you lost the know-it-all tone
Here's the thing tho
Yeah UCs are getting competitive
But here's the issue with assuming right now
I'm going to guess you are currently exiting 8th grade right?
Ah
What year then
Sorry most people here ask for a full high school schedule because they are rising freshmen
Assumptions about the change in competitiveness depend in quality on how close you are to graduating high school
REAL
SO REAL
all these freshmen
Lol 0% exam weighting
me too
😦
How difficult is AP Bio for a Junior
you just need to learn how to apply concepts to real world problems and stuff @somber onyx
its a lot of understanding the material
at least for my class, we dont get a lot of hw
but its a lot of studying
Okay since I was planning to do ap bio a year early
Since most kids in my school do ap bio in senior year
assuming you took bio regular ur freshman year i would take it as soon as possible
to not forget the info you learned from that class
Thanks for the advice
Do you have Biology during your Freshmen year?
So can you do ap bio in 10th or would you have to take chemistry
Anyone in Ib prep Human geography
I'm doing AP Human Geography but is there any difference
Idk
Im thinking to do prep ib human geo then work my way into psychology
And also
What do you do in IB economics
IB prep courses are non-standardized
Assuming it's as difficult as APHUG, I'd assume it's an easier course to take
Here is the course descriptionfor SL Econ: https://www.ibo.org/globalassets/new-structure/programmes/dp/pdfs/sl-economics-en.pdf
Here is the course description for HL Econ: https://www.ibo.org/globalassets/new-structure/programmes/dp/pdfs/hl-economics-en.pdf
depends
going off the message about ec's, are there any PLTW engineering classes at your hs?
Chill you're a freshman
Just take whatever you're interested in
Fuck PLTW
Yeah, But I don’t really know
All my homies hate PLTW
That’s why I am asking
Well what classes are required freshman year
better than AP
Let's get that out of the way first
AP Engineering does not exist
pltw csa is better than ap csa
Well Math, Science, SS, World Language, and English
I just don’t know what I should take for Math
Me when i make up classes that do not exist because I have been inside of the Gohar Khan server for too long:
What level math did you take last year
Or was it just simply "math"
What do you think?
I don't know, it changes
In my old school district you take "algebra I" in middle school but in my current school district you take "math" in middle school
And in some of the other transfers' schools they do "algebra II" in middle school
What does “math” even mean
As in, there's no course name
Okay, anyway I do Algebra 2
So that means you can solve $$log(x)=10$$ right?
Exotica
Yeah
And you also recall how to solve polynomials with powers above 2 correct?
Obviously
So that means you're finishing Algebra II this year, that means that next year you take precalculus
Yeah, I know that, The thing is I am wondering whether I can skip it
no
Since I do a lot of out of school math
You absolutely should never skip anything related to trigonometry
Bro, I am Literally doing Calculus RN
I have already done it out of school
So great news: you're fucked
You can take it over the summer if you’d like
No?
I know freshmen in Calc and they are completely fine
No I didn’t
Yeah but when you take calc that early and have nothing else to take: what happens is you're forced to take DE classes
Which, for some people they're fine
If you think you’re ready to take calculus, I strongly recommend either testing out of Precalculus through a placement test or by taking it for credit over the summer
The issue is: you shouldn't ever put yourself in a position where you're forced to take higher level course
If you take something higher level, it should be of your volition
You’re not forced to do anything of the sort
No, Since I go to a Private School, They have a lot of math Courses
Most H.S require 4 years of math
Also, I am planning on doing Calc 3 by Dual Enrollment
^ many high schools offer linear Alg, etc
Yeah exactly
I've never seen a high school that offers linear alg. 💀
Taking calculus = taking 4 years of math (Alg 1, geometry, Alg 2, and precalc)
The private schools in my county do
Inside of their school
That’s on a school by school basis but my school counts it the way I stated
Regardless wait @cinder gorge if you're going to private school is it an integrated private school?
Like it services K-12 or does it only service 9-12?
Then don’t, just take Precalculus your freshman year
That’s perfectly fine too
Yeah
It services all
Also, I have one more Thing
Alright so I do not know your graduation requirements then
Regardless, take precalc if you don't want to take a higher level math course
Hypothetically, If I were to take Calc Freshmen year, should it be AB or BC?
BC
In your case I'd say take AB if you don't like math
I would take AB, but that is more up to how much rigor you are willing to take on
There's no major benefit to taking BC unless you know you're going into STEM
I also think I should take AB
AB is more than enough
If you believe you are amazing at Calc and will excel, I would take BC
Else, take an
Ab
This also allows them to take 2 years of calc
I think AB since it could be better for GPA
Going from AB-BC
Yes
Which pads out their schedule
If you can get an A in AB, take AB
Whichever class you can get an A in do that
Yeah, Also One more last Thing
Generally: When you get to that high of a level a lot of colleges just... don't know what the fuck to do when they get someone with an education beyond calc
Since mine is a Private School, They offer another Option
Except for some but those are international universities where a Further Mathematics course is already well established and standardized
What is it?
I have seen though some colleges frown down upon taking ab and then bc because they view it as you being a slow learner and requiring 2 years of calculus to understand 1 year’s worth of content
There’s plenty of options
There’s many math courses
It’s called PC/DC and it’s like an Accelerated Pre- Calc Course which also Includes Calculus AB at the end, so that you can go directly into BC in 10th grade
yes, but you're doing it Freshman year they usually understand you're trying to pad out a fucked up schedule
So, You learn both Pre - Calc and Differential Calculus
Especially if you get As in both years
I would take this class if you want a less rigorous math class and ab if you need a more rigorous one
Is PC/DC better
If this person was asking which one to take Junior year, then I'd say BC only but because this is freshman year AB is the way to go
How is it screwed up?
This is your best route I guess
Well, Since either way I would do BC next Year
As I said earlier: a lot of colleges say they have no idea what the fuck to do when you've taken those high level math courses
The only thing is they require a Placement test for it, But it’s over Algebra 2, so it should be Fine
And oftentimes college will end up being a nightmare
If you take ab first, it will make freshman year harder and sophomore year easier. If you do pc/dc, then your freshman year will be easier and sophomore year harder
Could I see a source please?
As math is one of those things that are really sensitive to where you learn it
Source: it's basic fucking logic if you know anything related to mathematics and how god damn sensitive it is to how you learn it and where you learn it
I have a friend who is a math major at gt and he took Multivar and linear algebra in high school and is still taking math classes now
My high School also Only requires 3 years of Matg
@ripe geyser
If you're a math major that's fine
So, I could do 2 Years of Calc AB and BC
Then do Math Seminar which is what my School offers after
They can just not take math in college then
They probably don't know what the fuck they want to do 💀
Not really
As those classes are not standardized most colleges have you retake them
And then do Calc 3 Senior Year as Dual Enrollment
It's not like there's an AP Linear Algebra
Yes if they pass the AP exam they can test out of Calc 1 and 2
That lets you skip a linear algebra credit
Also, I have heard that AP Stat is really easy right?
What does math seminar do
This is talking about what they take after Calc 1 and 2
It depends on your strengths
I am asking because I am planning to take it alongside Calc BC
I think I can do it
I've never heard of this class
Oh wait
AP Stats
Depending on what college you go to, you can use your de credits
Yeah take AP Stats it's the only universally useful AP class imo
If you think you can do it, do it. However, keep in mind it has far more practical applications
Besides maybe AP Lang
I disagree AP lang is just as useful
But I'd encourage you take it after Calc BC
That's why I said maybe ap lang
I can't say much about AP Lang as that's not a course I'm going to be taking as an IB Student
I already sent it before you said that
I think I can take it alongside it because AP stat is too easy for me too spend a whole year in it without doing any other math
It’s useful regardless of the major you’re going into
me when I'm breaking the space time continium
You know yourself best. Don’t let anyone sway you one way or another
Nah probably a lag on my phone
Here's the thing: you don't actually know what the fuck you're gonna become interested in
Fair point
People here have attempted to talk me out of my junior year schedule and I’m glad they didn’t
That's why you should probably not take more than 1 math related course a year unless you're absolutely certain you want a STEM major
I wouldn’t plan too far ahead rn and focus more on your freshman year courses rather than your sophomore and junior
Year courses
Also, Math Seminar is Multivariate Calculus
Multivar = Calc 3 at a lot of places
So take that senior year
It’s Calc 3
Generally, you don't want to be doing too much math in H.S unless you're a math or STEM major
It's the calc of a function with 2+ variables you can play aroudn with
Wait, then what do I do senior year?
Or unless you’re interested in it
Wdym by HL and SL
Linear algebra, AP stats, etc
Linear Algebra Ig
@cinder gorge take AP Stats Junior year and Seminar Senior Year
No
Taking a year off between Calc is not smart
you really do not want to go through the unfun™️ process of relearning the same thing over and over in college
That's fair
Regardless, @cinder gorge this does not matter right now
Take Seminar junior year and stats Senior year ig
Also, what’s the difference between Multivariable Calculus and Multivariate Calculus?
I was also Confused about that
They're the same thing
You don’t need to worry about your junior year rn
HL = Higher Level
SL = Standard Level
I believe you're talking about the DP Econ course correct?
Also, should I do Global Scholars
I planned out my whole schedule my freshman and I did not follow through with it
I do not think the MYP offers a econ course
no fucking clue what that is
Fair point
Ohh alright
It’s sort of like IB
So would it be better to take HL to get into an Ivy leauge school?
HL is a class that requires 240 teaching hours while SL requires 150 teaching hours
And it’s over 2 years
It's really not
Unless you're taking the DP
Generally: Do not take IB unless you're taking the DP
Will my high Math help me for Ivy League? Just Curious
Ok
Probably not, nothing tbh helps with the Ivy League
It won’t make a huge difference depending on the major you are applying for
Fair point
Okay
It's a negative sum game where everything you do is really going to make you worse rather than help, it's just your job to come off as less worse than other applicants
Just wanted to Know, I am going to take them either way, Since I like math
Then do not go to an Ivy
That’s what matter, focus on what you enjoy
Why?
If they want to try for ivies, let them try
Ivys are good at math but I believe that most of the top 20 institutions for math and general STEM are not Ivys
I personally would love to go to an Ivy or another LAC
Ivys are more towards the humanitarian and socialsci end
You say it like, You know for sure I am not going to get in, Which you could be Right, But why say it like that
Ivies are among the top-10 schools for biology
No, I’m saying give it a shot if you want to
i feel like pseudo-ivies should have some sort of say tbh
More you know
even if they aren't ivies they may as well be
bc the education quality is the exact same
Okay, at this point Ivies are just a Coin Flip
I have a question would doing APUSH help at all
like stanford, mit, etc.
Basically if you want to try, try
They do, it's just that everybody doesn't give a fuck about non-Ivys
That’s why aiming for them is too Risky
I would take apush to get rid of Gen Ed credits
The prestige of "Ivy league" is too alluring
To some extent yes
It's well beyond a coin flip
You can do it in your favor
It depends on what school you are comparing to
They get 30k **qualified **applicants every year, and they have to accept 2000
But it’s still basically going to be a Coin Flip
You can do everything you can and even then it’ll be a coin flip
It's more like rolling a D20
^
And that's assuming you're qualified
Yeah exactly
Yup
This is what I meant yes
You play DND?
These schools fs I agree
I used to be a for-hire DM for DND
If a little kiddo wanted to play DND for their birthday I would be hired to give them a DnD themed birthday party shit
General Ed what's that since I'm doing it for that being required to do 1 year of US History
Though I only did it for like 3 weeks before I stopped cause my job at McDonalds was paying me more 💀
How old are you? Exactly
16
I thought you were in HS
I am
Oh, Okay, You taking Calc AB?
No, I'm doing the IBDP
So I'm taking Math AA HL
So many colleges require a general set of classes someone needs to take once they get in and if you take AP courses, you can bypass those courses. Apush is a common Gen Ed
I am taking Calc ab
Which Covers Calc BC and Calc III I believe?
Oh
- some more
Are you in 10th or 11th grade
Okay nice
Which also covers my precalc credits so I can join my IB Math HL course
If I didn't take Math HL I'd be in calc BC next year then I think?
And then Stats senior yer
Hey guys!
Anyone know anything about engineering uni In UK, I either wanna do engineering or medicine and I have the subjects for both! Just want to know how engineering is cause I already know about medicine!
Thanks for the opinions in advance!
?
Do you have a particular uni in mind where you'll study??
Yo my school follows CBSE so it doesn't offer any IB course.
Is there a way I can take a course and give exam to earn college credit????
Common IB W
U gotta be in ib
Ohok
So if I complete an online course from a US University in summer will I be eligible for college credits..???
(PS: I'm not in IB and taking AP is kinda expensive for me)
Um, u probably will, but maters on the college u go to
cuz the credits don't transfer as easily as ap or ib
Yes, always
What country do you live in and what country do you plan on going to school in?
It'll change on a country to country basis
If you plan on going to school in the U.S or Canada then you pretty much only got IB and AP
But for most other places I believe they don't do college credits
I'm from India and cbse is Central board.
And I wanna go to us for my ug
Yeah here in India there's no such thing for highschool students
ik. If you cannot afford to take AP then do not go to school in the U.S
1 credit at a public university I believe $200+
Most classes are worth more than 1 credit
And that's assuming you go to a public uni which is generally really cheap compared ot private unis
Private unis range anywhere from 500-1200 USD per credit
So you're looking at 16,000₹ for a public uni and 41000₹ to about 1 lakh in private unis
That's on a per credit basis, most schools have you getting at least 360 credits iirc
Now you might get financial aid but generally:
The universities that offer financial aid to international kids in the U.S are often some of the most difficult unis to get into
This'd be schools like Harvard, Stanford, MIT, etc.
I encourage seeing other international nations that are known for having free university and see if you can go there as if you're unable to afford AP exams you're most certainly unable to afford actual US college as most U.S college cost about 1 lakh for the public universities, and 10 lakh for the private universities
Europe is pretty good
