My school doesn’t offer Precalc
you dont need stats
Then AB is next yes
Alright so I will have to learn precalc
i'd be supprised if they didnt teach it
you should learn it your junior year if youre going at a normal pace
Junior year is Algebra 2
Some of this stuff is easy to learn by itself so it's easier to just excel to AP Calc being self taught
Although for me it is sophomore year
ok algebra 2 is probably precalc then
Trust me Precalc is quick they stretch it out a lot
yeah
Not unless you take Algebra 1 in 8th grade
And there is Functions/statistics/ and Trigonometry idk if that is calculus
Then you get it out of the way quickly
yeah you need those for sure
except for stats
So I should be good right
yeah, imo dont take a honors stats class just do AP
Alright
Yeah in that field specifically you don't necessarily need stats
yeah
It just clumps and adds more useless work
if youre gonna take stats just do AP, any other stats class would be a total waste
Yeah but it says that it is a 12th grade class
WHAT
💀 10th graders can take it at my school
just dont do stats until 12th grade then
if you really wanna to take it
Yeah my school is shit
Nahhhh it ain't a 12th grade class
No I can’t take AB until 12th
just take another class in place of stats
honors stats
I'm sorry but are yall that dumb to where you can't have it?😭
yeah fr
stats is one of the easier APs
There is calculus methods but that requires FST
im confused
just take that class then
Not enough smart ppl there to get AP stats then
Oh ok
Yeah but they need enough students who will be interested in the class
i guess
I wish my school had AP stats but my school is too shit to have that
just take it 12th grade
dont bother with an honors stats tho, fill it with a better class
i bet if you get the prereqs out of the way you can take calc 11th grade
There isn’t any classes to fill it in
Thats depressing
bro can you just drop the math classes youre taking the next few years
Look at the prereqs
yeah you dont need stats
I need FST though
Because it contains Functions and Trigonometry
No it is a separate class
thats alg 2
you dont need it then
just take alg 2
and you can go to calc
Ik my school is very shit
theyre making you take p much the same class twice?
I hate it so much
can you double up in math?
Yes
No you need to have a FastBridge score in the 99th percentile to bump one grade
that fucking sucks lmao
Because regular statistics is too easy
yeah you should be able to take it earlier
maybe ask your counsuler if you can take AP stats early
never hurts to ask
or the teacher who teaches the class
My school doesn’t have AP stats
It only has AP Calculus AB
AP Chemistry
AP US Gov
AP US History
AP Human Geo
AP Language and Composition
I am doing every single one except AP Lang
And AP music theory
no lang is probably the most useful one
or one of the most useful ones
I am not good at writing though
you can skip an english requirement in college
In a single year or...?
doesnt matter
if you follow the rubric youre gona get a 4 or 5 garunteed
Sophomore-Senior
oh okay
because i was about to say
I hope
I will drop Calculus and focus on Lang
take the class i promise you
NO DO BOTH
don't do us gov and us history on the same year
But I want to do AP chem
DO THEY LIMIT YOUR APS?
Something has to go
No
I only need to do like 4/6
To get into a good college
do one math, one science, one english, one hummanities
Why?
well roundedness
also why would you want to take so many social studies lmao
they arent as useful
if college cred is your goal you gotta do calc, lang, and a science
To get the highest APs
no dont do that
So I can show colleges
do APs that matter
AP Lang, AP US History, AP Human Geo, AP Calc and AP Chem
yes that is fine
Will that be enough
yeah
To get into a selective college
well
if thats all your school offers

does your school have duel enrollment?
maybe you can self study for some APs
Like
can you take college classes
You can get college credit from the class
No I cannot
ok
you might want to self study then
literally
take as many of the hardest classes you can handle
Like can I take the hardest APs
whats your intended major btw
Business
Yeah but how am I supposed to take the exam
yes
That matters
On your score
And on your college
But I would still recommend
Because it shows colleges your passion for that subject
That u self studied something not offered by your school
That’s one of my top colleges
for stanford you really gotta grind
I will get rejected though
So USC it is
find what youre interested in and take it all the way
Don’t worry
U don’t know until u try
My like number 1 is MIT
But that’s impossible
No I have a 3.8 GPA I am getting rejected for sure
stanford doesnt even look at freshman year grades lmao
Yes I haven’t done it yet but my extracurricular’s are leadership team, student council, DECA and a part time job
I think that’s god
If you can get leadership roles in them
Maybe win a few distinctions
Ur extracurriculars are really good for someone who wants to do business
Very focused
Now I would just try out to win awards in these clubs and become president
And I think you can easily get into Stanford after thst
Wel apply
Based on ur race and income and stuff u might not cuz college is a lottery and quotas needed
Yeah I am Asian, $500,000 income and no legacy
Is that true
Or
Are u being sarcastic
I am not I am just telling him my demographics
Also I got to mention I from a state that doesn’t get much applicants
Ok
Then yeah
U should be able to get into Stanford
I’m Asian too
Southeast Asian or where are your parents from?
My parents are from Southeast Asia
South Asia
I meant South Asia not SouthEast Asia
Sorry for the typo
But anyway what country are your parents from
My parents are from India
Same
Same
I mean on paper yeah but it really depends a LOT on teacher recommendations and your luck
So I’d give it a higher chance but still not a guarantee by any means
Lol he doesn’t guarantee it he just said I have a better chance than average
Or that is what he meant
Yeah all of that is true
Here's an updated version of my plan as well as my school's courses (The course card is from last year, so some courses may be added or removed in the future). Also, I failed to mention in the original message that I want to go into CS and/or physics; any new recommendations/suggestions?
Is it better to take AP Bio or AP Chem first?
AP bio
Way better choice
Okay.
This is a great schedule for your major. Just one more thing…I would add ap physics C somewhere because that is calculus based an more advanced and u said u wanted to go into physics.
Yeah, I was going to do that, except my school doesn't currently offer it
Ohh
Ok
Also
Is AICE just AP
But from UK
Why are you taking BC sophomore year
He’s a higher intelectual being
He must be advanced in math
Yeah like 3 years ahead I would assume
3 or 4
Yeah 3
Is he in like precalc right now
Yeah
And I was talking to someone else on discord
And they are taking calc bc freshman year
Oh
Kid must be 4 years ahead
I would like to skip precalc but I’m kind of scared
I think you will be fine
I think they cover a little bit of precalc
At the start of the year
Yo anyone here?
I want to major in CS but my parents are kinda pushing me to take biology
but im really bad at bio
my midterm for bio this year was 82
I was wondering what other courses can I take?
I've already took Computer engineering
but UOW
needs at least 2 uni level courses so idk
would love anyone helping me later
uni level cs classes?
na besides that
take random uni level classes lol
you can go to a local community college and take somec they’re pretty easy
im in 11th grade dude
only take a few units
im talking bout 12 grade
i’m in 10th and i’ve taken 4 classes at my local cc
you from canada?
Nah
oh
i’m from CA
that explains why i didnt know bout the cc
Community College
hm
atleast about what i know
so bio kinda suck tbh
i was thinking about taking aerospace
or air cadet outside of school
but idk
maybe ill stick with bio
hm
Do you have AP
AICE
Or IB
If so
Take those
If not
Look on google
There’s a lot of online programs
College level
I'm going to take precalculus over the summer and self-study some calculus; doing really well in algebra 2 right now so I decided that I would take calculus in sophomore year (and decided that I could handle BC)
especially since I want to go into Physics
and probably self study some physics since my school doesn't offer physics C
Alright
Oh
Does your school offer Physics 1
yeah
probably going to take it junior year but I might switch physics and astronomy to balance the AP distribution
well
it wouldn't balance it actually
I could switch ap comp sci with digital info tech as well as astronomy and physics in order to maintain the current AP distribution
- learning physics 1 in sophomore year would be nice either way, but it's not necessary (I don't think)
Ok
I’m also taking algebra II this year
And doing wel
So
Are you doing precalc
At a cc
Or at ur high school
I am going to learn precalc over Christmas break
Just want to see how difficult it is
Ok
Are you going to learn precalc
Later this year
Or does your school provide that
Oh ok
precalc = a2
Basically
Here's what I'll do senior year:
- AP Bio
- AP Econ
- AP English
- AP CSA (maybe)
- AP Calc AB
- Precalc
- Gym
- Spanish 3
Thats a busy senior year Lol
Dang bro
So I need to pick my IB subjects by December 9 and I'm conflicted between taking IB Psych and IB Econ.
I'm really interested in both subjects but I think I'm much more likely to take a business-related uni course. The thing is, that makes me question if I'll actually learn more taking psychology. I do think I'll enjoy writing an EE in psychology more than any other subjects though. (Taking both psych and econ is not an option in my school.)
I do like maths and less memorisation heavy courses (which is economics) but I think I could enjoy psychology classes much more and wouldn't mind memorising since it really interests me.
I really don't know, we can change our subjects only in the first ~3 months in grade 11. (I'm grade 10 now)
Here are my other subjects:
- English A (HL)
- German Ab Initio (SL)
- Physics (SL)
- Math AA (SL) (probably)
- Business (HL)
If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated 🥺
self study it and take the AP exam for it
I'd say take it in your junior year so your calculus knowledge is still fresh from your sophomore year
cuz in uni you have to self study it either way
psychology would probably help within the business area but Econ would appeal more to universities in my opinion
oh I see, that's basically what I was thinking subconciously, haha
Possible schedule for 10th grade
Spanish 1 (I didn’t take it 9th grade)
Weightlifting
Geometry
AP seminar (technically English class)
Regular world history
Biology 2
I am currently a sophomore, and that looks good.
Thanks
how hard are AP exams?
No clue
But AP physics is a very hard exam
I heard
Depends on the class.
Physics
how hard is it on a scale of 1-10?
My basketball teammate who’s in 12th grade took it
how hard did he say it was?
Pretty hard
But you should ask your counselor
Or upperclassmen who took it to see how it is
my school only does IB
o
that's why I'm thinking whether to do IB or move schools and do AP
See what’s best for you
hopefully I'll figure that out soon
my course selection for senior year is:
- AP Chemistry
- AP English Language and Composition
- AP Calculus AB course (BC exam self study)
- AP Physics C: Mechanics (taking exam)
- AP Psychology
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Forensics
Thoughts?
I think IB is awesome
I consider it better than AP
U should be fine
It’s busy but I think u can handle it
However
Chem va physics C
it honestly depends on the major
how hard is IB?
if he's going for example Aeropsace enegineering he'd need both
College level
It’s not a university
It’s a high school
yeah i mean what major he's going to
I guess
going into*
yes do that
yes
in your opinion is IB worth it?
depending which universities you want to go to
Yeah
Because it more colleg like than ap
top 20 hopefully
Yeah then take IB's
it's harder than AP?
Similar
if the school offers AP and IB which should I pick?
honestly both are really good and if you can mix between them
the stuff you take are different though
you can mix between them?
my friend is doing it yes
depends on what courses your school offers for each and what major your going into
is it more difficult than just doing one?
Yes 100%
but
you can handle it
I took 3 AP's Junior year
AP Chemistry
AP Bio
AP CSP
what year you in @cinder gorge
I did good but you have to really put in work
currently in Grade 8
ohhh okay good
yeah I decided to start early
Listen add us if you have any questions dont be afraid to DM
thanks I will
for sure
Oh and never forget Extra Curriculars but never force them do stuff you enjoy
so you think I should do a mix of both right?
What major are you thinking of?
and what IB's and AP's do your school offer if you know?
thats on you. whatever your major is
for extra curricular?
no for course selection
so my current school has IB only
do you know what IB classes? like caclulus physics etc?
I'm starting to research those, I know AP classes but not IB yet
and your major what are you thinking of Computer science, Law etc?
possibly Physics or Bio-medical engineering or Chemical Physics
im your guy on this one cuz I might major in biomed too
100% you'll need IB Biology, IB Physics and Calculus
what courses are you doing for biomed?
those are core courses for STEM Majors
I thought so, but I also think English would be important
taking these @cinder gorge
it is, it helps since its good for doing resaerch later on in your career since it helps you write effictivly
also it shows colleges your ready for rigrous work
take as many IB courses you can throughout Highschool since it will show universities your challenging yourself but know your limits and dont overflow yourself
I think I might do something similar to that if it's available in IB
but make sure to spread it out throughout highschool
dont be dumb as me to take all in 1 year
itll destroy you
so for example I take Chem, Physics, and Bio first year
grade 9 is way to early in my opinion
but I would say to spread it out more
start grade 10 if you can
10 11 12 take IB courses but spread them out so your not crammed. So you can enjoy highschool
imagine it like this. 1-2 AP or IB 9th, 2-3 10th, then increase more in 11th and 12th
gradually increase
yep
yeah I also think I should have some extra curriculars
Yeah theres some ones you HAVE to take in my opinion
Community service
Athletics
Academics
yeah I'm doing that I've entered STUCO, planning on joining the MUN next year
perfect
do the Athletics have to be in school?
no
yeah currently I do no athletics in school but I do many afterschool
I played volleyball and football (soccer) professionally outside of school and put them in my college application
okay good
anyway imma log off @cinder gorge but feel free to message me when you need
see ya
and goodluck man
ok thaks have a nice day
you too
You too
thanks cya
Your gonna have a lot of work, and homework
So try to balance it
I’m gonna take atleast 1 AP class 10th, 11th, 12th
I have found a system to manage it although it really killed me in the biginning
o
its expected im taking 5 APs at once lol
but with trail and error ive gotten used to it
trial*
Hey guys
Is music theory worth it
even if you like music
I mean AP music theory
I mean it’s not super hard
Like if you don’t play piano it is
But if you play piano, its not that bad
But music theory is extremely useful
No
Like there’s no overlap whatsoever except for string theory
Cause its like “what interval is this”
And even that is like 5% overlap
ok
Is it worth taking AP Seminar and AP Research? I've had recommendations from upperclassmen to take it
Yeah
I consider it worth it
If you especially want to go into stem
It’s good
It’s like a mini PHd
And u get the cool ap capstone diploma
Cool! I want to go into aerospace engineering, and also try to get into a uc school 👍
Ofc
I’m taking it 10th grade year
Technically English class
Taking AP seminar 10th
And then research 11th
Taking seminar and research
Helps your writing skills
And helps you make a good college essay
If your applying for college
Seminar helps your writing skills
Speaking skills
Presentation skills
Teamwork skills
On the test
U do two presentation projects
One individual
One team based
And then on the final exam
U write three essays
And research helps your research and writing skills
For research you end with a final research essay at the end of the year
I would rather take AP lit or lang
Than AP seminar
It sounds hard
I do not like presentations
Take AP lit
If you like writing
A lot of reading and writing
What happened to you
There was one point
Where you were telling people not to take ap lit
Also
Anyways
I would recommend lit and lang to people who want to pursue humanities
But seminar and research for those who want to pursue stem
Why is seminar good for stem
Seminar and research are good
Because they’re more research based
And independent study based
So you can work on a specific topic
Calc and Physics should be for stem not seminar
That u want to look
No
But for English
Cuz many high schools require English all four years
So if you want to take an ap course to fulfill that requirement
I would recommend seminar and research for stem people
Because it’s like a mini PhD
All you do there is study
No you don’t
It’s more like a study hall
Where you an choose to work
Yeah and I don’t understand how that has to do with stem
Whenever you want
It’s an independent self study option
I’m not denying calc and physics
I’m just saying
If you want to get organized then do AP Seminar
Come on
To clear some of the time for yourself
Ik
Many high schools count seminar and research as English courses
So that would be a good choice for stem
And on top of thst you get a diploma from ap
Seminar teaches you how to argue and use sources to argue
Research teaches you to use those skills
And the best part
You can choose your topic
That’s why it’s good for stem
However lit and lang
Yeah but stem you don’t really need to argue cmon now
You do
To bring your point
In research in stem
You are making a claim
The scientific process
Not argue in that sense
But like srgue a point
Bring a point across
Like Galileo
Or Copernicus
Or Einstein
Galileo and Copernicus worked to prove the heliocentric theory
And u know Einstein
Those they are scientists
Ap capstone is more beneficial for stem
That’s exactly what I said
Ik but you should be doing AP lit or lang if you want to become a scientist because it teaches you how to write down all your information effectively
Yup
No it doesn’t
Ap lit and lang don’t focus on that
First go learn about the course
Dude
Both of them are literary analysis courses
Lang is nonfiction
And lit is fiction
You only write about what they are saying
It helps you analyze things
A very important skill
A scientist is not going to get benefit from analyzing why Mary had a little lamb
However
It will be better for them
To research
And bring their point across
I mean it might necessarily focus on what they are doing but it does help people analyze things
Seminar and lang are very similar
It’s just seminar has more independent aspect
With your own topic
And ur own choices
If you want to become a doctor you should do AP lit and lang although if you want to become a scientist or chemist I would say AP seminar or research
I mean I get what you are saying now
It is better than lang or lit
For stem people
Although, if you want to become a Doctor or something like that do AP lit or lang
A historian might find more use through lang
Or an English teacher
Or lit
However
Doctors
I
No
What are doctors doing
How are they analyzing literary themes
How are they analyzing rhetoric
Simple
Humanities: lang/lit
Stem: capstone
In my opinion of course
Is it better to take seminar sophomore and research junior or seminar junior and research senior
No but it will help them write down their notes better and more efficiently
Freshman: English 9 H
From the information their patients gave them
For us
And fellow doctors
English 9 is literature and composition
Again
Lit and lang
Is not a writing class
They don’t teach you to write efficiently
In fact the more you write usually u get more points
Seminar and research are the writing classes
anyways
I mean you do write
And they help you become a better writer
Yes
I’m biology u write
For free response
That doesn’t make you a better writer
The purpose of writing in lit and lang is to analyze and understand literary texts
Yeah Ik and that will be helpful
For doctors
Doctors are humanities
Yes they are
Anyways
No
Humanities is art
English
Social studies
Doctors are biologists in a sense
And biology is science
That’s stem
Just because they deal with humans
That doesn’t make them humanities
Anyways
So I’m taking seminar and research junior and senior
And literature classes freshman and sophomore
Health Science is no stem my guy
Doesn’t mean it is stem I think
But I won’t want to discourage you from taking lit or lang
If you think you like analyzing texts
It’s good
Then what senior year
what's the diff between ap lit and ap lang
I mean drop lit
But those are not English courses
I could take a normal English course
Ap lit
In 12th
Is fiction
AP lang is useful
Can I?
And ap lang is non fiction
U could
AP Lang is more useful
I thought AP lit and lang basically the same
Ap lit is a course in rigorous literary analysis of fictional texts and poems
It’s looking at famous and literary works
Throughout time
Ap language
That is a course that analyzes rhetoric and other techniques that authors in non fiction use to get their points across
Yeah that could be helpful for arguments
If you think about it
You analyze arguments and devise your own argument
I never said it wasn’t
But the only problem is
There’s no independent topic study
U can’t go into your topic in depth
U do whatever your teachers choose
Also AP Lit could be useful if you want to go to a selective university
No
It can show the college admissions team that you are challenging yourself
That’s literally all ap classes
U can do that by taking an ap course
That’s the point of ap classes 💀
They literally do not care about what the course is
If it’s ap
Ur challenging yourself
Yeah but if you take really hard AP classes your school offers then it can help
Unless it’s in progresssion like physics C and 1&2 then there’s no advanced
Ya physics is super hard
Because not all schools offer everything
That’s why they don’t discriminate
Based on what u took
So if I take capstones vs lit they wouldn’t care
Yeah
Now if you’re talking about giving college credit
Then that’s different
Some colleges do
Some don’t
How wouldn’t they care because AP lit is a harder class than the AP capstones
It’s AP
Literally all AP classes are meant to be tough
They’re not supposed to be compsrednwit each other
In terms of rigor
Ik but some are tougher than others
Yeah
College classes are tougher than other college classes
Thst doesn’t make the easier classees not college classes
Ik but if you take a AP class with a low pass rate and get a lot of credit that will be a lot more impressive than taking a AP class with a high pass rate and passing
Again
Colleges are not thst impressed
With the difdeeent type
Like they could care less if you took bio vs physics
They literally just skim through and see
Ap
Honors
Regular
Dual credit
Etc
They won’t be like
Timmy took ap psychology
How dare he
I wanted him to take physics C
They evaluate the classes that are offered and you took
To see if you challenged yourself
They don’t have time to scroll through every high school page
Ik but they can see the classes that are offered and what you took
No they can’t
On your transcript
They see
Your courses
Ur grades
Yes they do
I mean look it up for yourself if you do not believe me
But my original point
Why would they care
What ap you took
They just care u took an ap
Instead of honors
Or honors instead of regular
Based on the college
I mean if you took a harder AP it is far more impressive than taking a easier AP
Test scores don’t judge thst
I meant exam statistics
Because
Ap physics C is the hardest
However
It doesn’t have the lowest pass rate
However
Apes is really easy
However it has the second lowest pass rate
That tells you
Thst pass rates don’t matter
So they can’t judge based on that
Also
What if you wanted to go into biology
Why would you take chemistry?
Even though it’s harder
I know but AP lit has been shown to be one of the hardest AP’s available
That’s subjective
Like remember parkerkuo
Or someone
Their school has people with 99s
All people have 99s in ap physics
Yes
That’s why they can’t judge
Because different high schools have different grading policies and stuff
So you are saying if I take the easiest AP classes colleges won’t care
Yeah
Idk about that
They won’t care
In your applications
They won’t reject you for not taking harder ap classes
However
If you’re admitted
They might not give college credit for it
They literally just care thst u took ap
I strongly disagree because colleges say they care about the course rigor
Yeah
Course rigor
Meaning
Ap
Honors
Regular
Do you not understand
That even the easiest ap courses
Are AP
Course rigor means taking the hardest classes offered
Yeah
Even if you get a slightly lower grade
So
Ap
Is the hardest
Because
All the ap courses are considered equal
Other than physics C and physics 1
Because it matters on your major
AB and Bc
That too
Anyways
Yeah
It matters on your major
Just because u want to go into geography and you take human geo
That doesn’t mean u didn’t want course rigor
What I am saying is that if a college sees you take AP lit over AP capstones and regular English it will look more impressive
No it won’t
Ap lit
And ap capstone
Are not comparable based on course rigor
Because what if ur major doesn’t have anything to do with English
What if you will have nothing in your life to do with
Analyzing literary texts
I mean still take it because it shows the college you can handle that
No
Colleges won’t be looking at that u took lit
They’ll be looking at that u took AP
It doesn’t matter if you don’t like it or not you have to do things you don’t like
That’s not always true
If you want to get into a good college you have to do many things you don’t like
If you find yourself doing many things you don’t like for a college then it isn’t a good fit for you
Now if it’s a few things that’s fine
What I mean by that is if you don’t like English and there is honors English and not many classes that have honors take honor English
Yeah
Ok
So seminar and research are English
At most high schools
So here you do have a choice
U are talking about a scenario where there is not choice
You have a choice to take a harder AP
Why not take it
I was talking about the English one
Who said lit is harder
It is harder than the AP seminars and research
When you compare writing and reading
They are both hard in their own disclipiens
It’s like comparing apples and bananans
Bananas
They both have their own benefits
And are too different to be compared
AP seminar has a 80% pass rate compared to AP lits 60%
Guess what
Ap physics c has a 70% pass rate
It is far more difficult to get A in AP lit than A in AP seminar
And physics 1 has 50
But physics C is literally harder than physics 1
So stop using pass rates
That is inaccurate
I know but logically AP lit is harder than AP seminar
And again
It is common sense
Getting an A
Is different
In high schools
Bring you back to that Parker kuo example
I can tell you
Ok
In my high school
Not all people have 99s in ap physics
And u can’t compare lit and seminar
U have to compare lit and research
And again
U can’t compare two things that have completely different purposes
Honestly as long as you have a 93% or above you are fine colleges don’t care that much about grades
I’m talking about the Parker kuo example
If you have a 99% and 93% they both show up on transcripts as A
Stop changing the topic
I’m talking about how
Getting As in different high schools
Is different
Courses can be harder at others
I mean tell me if you told a random group of people which one would they think is harder
That’s subjective
And once again
To my original point
I know that but most of it depends on how well the student is academically
Even if one is harder than the other
They are still AP
And have different purposes
Take a few hard AP’s is better than taking a bunch of easy APs
I want you to know that
Nope
U don’t decide what harder and what’s not
And it matters on what you want in life
Ap economics is so easy
But if you want a career in exonomics
Then take it
Harder APs are APs that require a lot of work and study time
U don’t decide that
Aps are all good
