the idea is that IF pawn takes, then bxg4 which just calmly wins back the piece and gives attacking scope. In the game and the best move btw is to take the knight with Nxd4. After Nxd4, there's Bxd4. So the best move then is Qf3 which is still like an equal position but black plays for an attack.

what happened in the game is that my opponent messed up and got absolutely slaughtered

infact according to stockfish, the best way for white is to lose the queen a couple moves later regardless
