Step 1: The Players are warned that if no progress is made, the winner of the current game will be determined by the highest life total. If no Player advances the game state towards a result other than a draw, go to Step 2.
Step 2: The winner of the game is the Player whose hero has the highest life total in the current game. If neither hero has a higher life total, go to Step 3.
Step 3: The winner of the match is the Player who has won more games in that match. If neither Player has won more games and a game is currently in progress go to Step 2. Otherwise, Players start a new tiebreaker game with 4 turns total (2 turns per player). After 4 turns, go to Step 4.
Step 4: The tiebreaker game continues until one hero has a higher life total and the winner of the match is that hero’s Player. If the tiebreaker game ends in a draw, go to Step 5.
Step 5: The winner of the match is the Player that had the highest standing before the match began.

The text above describes the process for determining a winner after the round time has expired, as stated in the rulebook.
I have a few questions regarding this process.

  1. In Step 3, it says that the Player who has won more games in the match is the winner. Does this refer to a Best-of-3 match? In the case of a Best-of-1 match, should we skip the first part of Step 3 and proceed directly to starting a new tiebreaker game?

  2. In Step 3, the “new tiebreaker game” mentioned—does this mean a continuation of the game that was already in progress, or do players collect all cards, reshuffle their decks, and begin an entirely new game?

  3. In Step 4, the tiebreaker game is said to continue until one hero has a higher life total. Does this mean that if there is no difference in life totals after the 4 turns (2 turns per player), players continue taking additional turns until there is a difference? Or does the game go directly to Step 5 if the result is still a draw after those 4 turns?

Thank you very much for your help, as always.

firstly the above rules is not for when time has expired, but rather for when the game reaches a deadlock/stalemate in an untimed round. The procedure for time expiring is that the turn player finishes their turn, then their opponent takes a turn, and if there is still no winner the game ends in a draw.

  1. FaB matches are all best of one, but many rules are designed to handle cases of matches with more games as (I expect) future proofing
  2. the tiebreaker game is an entirely new game
  3. They continue playing until someone takes damage, or until the game deadlock/stalemates again
