Nothing. You can defend, it just doesn’t trigger unless you use an attack reaction (which you can now)

8.2.8d seems to be the exact relevant rule and I don’t think anything is stopping you from resolving the triggered ability since you are not declaring a card or activating an ability. You are just…adding it to the chain link as a defending card
