#Shadowrealm Horror and Spectra

Tyler has two Action points. He uses the first to attack a Spectra aura (Arc Light Sentinel for exemple)

Tyler banishes three 6+ attacks from the additional cost of Shadowrealm Horror.

Can Tyler attack with those attacks ?

My instinct tells me Shadowrealm Horror needs to resolve to make those cards playable this turn… and Shadowrealm doesn’t resolve because of the spectra

It feels like one of those things that should be triggered when it attacks, but I can't find anything on it and it doesn't have the "when this attacks" wording. I don't think you can play them, but I'm not fully sure on this one.

I believe that shadowrealm horror has a connected ability pair (1.7.7) with the leading additional cost of banishing 3 cards at random, and the trailing static ability based on the number of 6's banished from the leading ability.

Since SRH never properly resolves off the stack, the trailing ability never becomes functional (earliest chance it would have to do so is 7.2.3, which is after targeting spectra closes the chain)

TLDR No, you can not play any of the cards banished by SRH if you target spectra with it

My instincts also made me think it would not resolve the if until the resolution of the attack, but then I search in the rules and found this:

#

5.4.4d seems to imply that the conditional effect is applied

SRH does not have a play-static ability. it arguably generates one if its trailing static text becomes functional which it will not if it targets something with spectra

Maybe I am not understanding 5.4.4a correctly then, maybe because English is not my first language, but it seems to say that an additional cost is a play static ability

Fair. The additional cost still needs to be paid in order to play SRH. However, the ability that references the cards banished is not directly part of that play-static additional cost. The play static ability ('as an additional cost, banish 3 random cards from your graveyard) isn't referenced as part of playing its source for Shadowrealm Horror, which means it must be a connected ability pair (it is not part of the play-static clause)

If they weren't in two separate paragraphs it'd be a play-static

#

I do believe the effect on shadowrealm horror is a resolution effect, I'll double check with the rules team

Even if it is a trailing resolution ability, it would not be functional

1.7.5c A resolution ability is functional when its source object resolves as a
layer on the stack, otherwise, it is non-functional.
