#Getting rid of Bass

You won't be able to remove it completely as each bass note has overtones.
I see. But is there a way to at least make it sound a lot lower than the rest of the instruments in the track? I messed around a bit with the high pass filter (increasing the fq rate by 100 or 150 or 70s e.g 550, 570.) and roll off. But it just only adds some filter to the song rather than lowering any of the bass parts.
(I'm very much a novice to Audacity so could be idk what im doing)
Have you tried the built in equalization for base reduce?
Nah is that under bass and treble?
I believe the lowest note on a 4-string bass is E1 = 41.2 Hz. So the lowest full octave is going to be between 41 and 82Hz. 5-string is going to be even lower. I would start with a cutoff frequency of around 100Hz.
on high pass filter right?
Right.
I did try putting it at a 100 and then continuing to add 100 to it but it just makes the track sound boxy
I wouldn't go below 70 or above 130. Repeat the filter if you need more of it. Or, for example, you could run one filter at 85, then run a second one at 115.
what do you think the roll off should be?
So I tried stuff like 120 and 12 db (or 6 db) and then your example, there's no boxy filter over it but it doesnt lower the bass. Also by filters I assume you meant use high pass filter twice right?
Um....removing low notes IS going to make it sound boxy, because you are also removing low frequecies from percussion and undertones.
I mean like it sounds boxy but it also doesnt sound like the bass is lowered or much has changed besides there just being a boxy sound over the track
Those are likely the overtones.
No clue if posting the audio im trying to get the bass out of will specify anything more. I'll post it just incase
Any idea what I could do if thats the case?
Actually
Can someone at least explain how I cut/mute out the remaining bass sounds of the guitar extraction? (if thats possible)
A bass guitar will usually produce frequencies from less than 100 Hz to well over 1000 Hz. This makes it impossible to filter out the sound of a bass guitar without greatly affecting the sound of the rest of the mix.
so basically if I want the bass gone I have to deal with shoddy sounding audio for the rest of the track?
I'd suggest that you try filtering the music with the High-Pass Filter, with the filter frequency set to 1000 Hz and 48 dB per octave roll-off so that you can hear for yourself what happens. You should be able to hear that the bass guitar is mostly gone, and also that the rest of the mix is dramatically altered.
