Hello i'm trying to upload webp images from media picker but umbraco does not see webp format as an image format instead it sees as a normal file how can i change that?

Hey, you can override the default settings for this in your appsettings.json file. https://docs.umbraco.com/umbraco-cms/reference/configuration/contentsettings#imaging
You would need to use the default value and add in webp as well I believe.

IIRC webp support wasn't introduced until version 10
so should i upgrade?

I would upgrade, 9 to 10 shouldn't cause any problems
