Bonus: when picking the hero try getting one out of three which are easy to come by. (Darrius is easy for f2p, Mushashi/leonidas/mulan for p2w)

I would recommend trying to build towards a town if you can. Just be aware of the other alliances around and when you build flags don't waste them by building a big block. You want to cover a large distance with little flags if possible to be efficient

Without survival, I trained all the troops equally, but I’m not sure how to approach this in the game, as they are very resource-heavy.

Troops are needed so you can fill up your marches. Producing all of them daily is highly recommended. They receive boosts once you level them up, or upgrade the tier of them in technology research
