ah so if they come pre-lubed then don't need to
Yup
I still have some GPL105 on hand if any particular switch is bothering me
Only had to do it for a couple of really low end switches
Like the Outemu stuff
Even then
That's some seriously pickiness
The problem with lower end switches is consistency
Some switches come well lubed from the factory
And some will show up bone dry and scratchy
nice after doing a lot of research i decided that my style of typing is more geared for linear switches so i think i will be replacing the Keeb-TKL switches with some Sakura switches or the pheonix switches from gamakay
Be sure to read the operating point
You want something around the 2.0mm mark
i figure $0.65+ a switch your probably getting some good switches
It's practically impossible to type on linear switches with a hair trigger (less than 1.0mm before operating)
Depends on your needs
If you like linear and willing to go $0.65 a piece, take a hard look at Gateron Weightlessness switches
It's technically a tactile switch, but it actuates so quick, I could swear it was a linear
But there's definitely still a tactile bump
3.4mm short overall travel with a classic 2.0mm pre-travel
Dual stage spring to achieve that "weightless" pre-travel
And a fairly strong upstroke
yeah i was looking at 1.8-2.0mm with 3.2-3.4mm overall
Either get them directly from Gateron or Amazon
Nevermind, found the Amazon listing: https://a.co/d/fFEUd1F
Top-Notch Materials.A Tactile Ride With Weightlessness Switch. The 50 grams of required actuation force ensure an impressively substantial keystroke, while the 3.4 millimeter travel delivers the right balance of distance and quickness for typing and gaming, which is perfect for middle-of-the-road...
Google found it
A review on these with a funny title: https://youtu.be/HPBCpJDsRHQ
Gateron Weightlessness Pre-Lubed Tactile Switch
- POM Stem (13.7mm)
- Nylon Housings
- 22mm 50g operating force double-stage spring
- Total Travel: 3.4mm (Stem pole bottom-out)
Keyboard:
Mode65 (2024)
- Config: Blue Grey Top, Aluminum Crema Bottom, Brass Weight, Wood Accent
- PP Plate
- Half lattice Mounting Blocks
- No mods or foams
Deskmat: ...
I have them on my default gaming keyboard: #1071070910989209661 message
And another GMMK3 build with these switches: #1071070910989209661 message
how many do i need for the Keeb it says 93 keys but i think that includes the media and roller bar?
i think i counted 87 so figured i would get 90
yes, you just need 90
cool
but I think the official Gateron package is x35
so unless you order from AliExpress, you're not going to be able to order x90
it is you have to get 105
nevermind, even AliExpress sells them by the x35 package only
yeah, looks like it
oh
depending on your Amazon status (have Prime), you might want to order from Amazon for the convenience
even though there may be a couple dollar difference
yeah i think i might just go with the GK GAMAKAY Pegasus Silent Tactile
i will see if i can find them ether a 90pack or buy 9 10pack
that's definitely the more economical choice
but Pegasus comes in x35 packs only too
GamaKay's official store on AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256806634950987.html
there's a winter sale right now on AE
dang, I almost want to grab some Griffin since the US stock is sold out
Griffin vs. Pegasus?
yeah
Griffin:
Pegasus:
completely different tactile bump
Griffin has a sharp bump at about 1.0mm
ah
Pegasus has a smooth bump that starts immediately
well i ordered the Pegasus
I'm still about 10 keyboards away from the K1 build
now to figure out keycaps and what i want to do i think i talked myself out of doing Mori
but I'll eventually get there
the #⌨-keeb-tkl has north-facing LEDs
don't use side-print keycaps
yeah
Or do like me and treat them like they have no letter print
I think he wants ones with Japanese
since he mentioned at some point about typing in both languages
With that in mind my idea is really not what you are looking for
anyways, Red/Blue Samurai is always a popular choice: https://a.co/d/3tm0c23
obviously these are not the actual GMK versions, but clones are always fun in my book
another clone that should work well: https://a.co/d/9gMdWm9
the Keeb TKL looks best with these darker keycaps, at least in the stock form
no, just from over use
Oh
Damn got full stock
they keep falling out of keycap and keyboard boxes
there are probably a dozen more in keyboard boxes
Damn
anyways
one last keyboard before calling it a night and getting to #gaming
after gifting away a blue Phantom 81 to my friend (#1071070910989209661 message), I decided to order one for myself:
I found a refurbished unit for $100 on Amazon
and it just happened to be the gold color that I've wanted:
crazy good looking even in the stock form:
it came with these Crystal linear switches that I've quickly ripped out after the initial stock typing test: https://youtu.be/ZOTIU5jtEGo
Here's the typing test with the stock KiiBoom Phantom 81 Gold.
Board: KiiBoom Phantom 81 Gold
Switches: KiiBoom Crystal Linear 55gf
Keycaps: KiiBoom Clear Transparent PC ASA Profile
as per usual, I struggled with typing on linear switches
I decided to give another set of budget friendly clear tactile switches a try, the Leobog Ice Soul tactile switches:
pretty nice looking switches, but a bit on the light side with 30gf actuation force
some pictures of the Ice Soul switches on the Phantom 81:
as for the keycaps, I went with some XVX Black Topo to match with the White Topo keycaps on the ID87 Crystal build (#1071070910989209661 message):
yup, those will work
top shine-through will work perfectly with the north facing LEDs
Here's the KiiBoom Phantom 81 Gold, unlit:
nice i just saw those caps
KiiBoom Phantom 81 Gold, lit + ambient lighting:
KiiBoom Phantom 81 Gold, lit + no ambient lighting:
sound test after the swap: https://youtu.be/2pzJ_Dfd7ng
Here's the typing test with the KiiBoom Phantom 81 Gold after swapping out the switches and keycaps.
Board: KiiBoom Phantom 81 Gold
Switches: Leobog Ice Soul Tactile 30gf
Keycaps: XVX Black Topo Side-Print Dye-Sub PBT OEM Profile
and the 4x timelapse of the switch and keycap swap: https://youtu.be/jdEHhasgia0
4x speed video of build for the KiiBoom Phantom 81 Gold. I swapped out the stock linear switches for some Leobog Ice Soul tactile switches as well as the keycaps from the PC to some side-printed dye-sub PBT.
These are my handmade keycaps that will go well with that
anyways, the Phantom 81 felt so much better than the X75 (#1071070910989209661 message) that I had built right before
I think they were $20 a piece
and for $40 more, it's a no-brainer to purchase the Phantom 81 over the X75
the only regret I had about the build are the Ice Soul switches
they're really not made well and had a lot of stem wobble when pressed
aside from being loud, the LTC Jerrzi switches are definitely better than the Leobog Ice Soul
I didn't really mind the lightness of the Ice Soul, but that wobble really annoyed me
since I won't be using this keyboard very much, I don't plan to swap out out the switches for now
i am going to go out on a limb and say i probably should stay away from the Redragon K686 PRO SE due to how cheap they are
but the build quality of the Phantom 81 is how an acrylic board should be
fully taking advantage of the clear case with case LEDs
and using much much thicker acrylic than the X75
even the sound profile is deeper and better despite being a plastic case
there are much better budget keyboards that I will be posting about later
cool i will keep watch then for a backup
if you're looking for a 95% keyboard, I've just built 4 Galaxy100s
they're that good
and they're literaly at the same price as your Redragon K686
at least for the wired version: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256807731530685.html
and it comes in 4 colors
Red, Green, Black, and White
Space bar looks weird
Other then that its looks cool
the funny thing is, Epomaker also has a version of the Galaxy100: https://a.co/d/bnSA8vY
only major difference is that the Epomaker version has a knob
what spacebar? those are barebones
Transparent keycaps
Not bad tbh, just spacebar
anyways, 3 out of the 4 VTER Galaxy100 that will eventually get posted:
and I'm building the last (white) one tonight with some ceramic keycaps
so yeah, at $75, you can definitely do better than that Redragon keyboard
This looks pretty
these Galaxy100 are full aluminum cases
and definitely one of the more deeper/thocky sounding keyboards on the market
I agree, I went on a bender with Black/Gold keycaps
'Galaxy' name match with looks
the outerbox and backplate:
Dang
anyways, really need to run to chore
Gl
Oh yeah u need to do that, my dogs are small
I dont think they needs that
in game
Oh in game ic
anyways, this was the dragon that I had cut for the Galaxy80:
need to cut 2 more for the Black and White Galaxy100
I'll eventually get there
Nice
Btw just question
Why
Like its back side of keyboard
No one gonna see it
just for fun
Lol agreed
True
made from various metal with different finishes
Well everything for my build is ordered now keyboard should be here on Monday, key caps Sunday, and the switches should be around the 17th
awesome
Dang u need wait 10 days
Yeah might take longer for the switches I tend to have a hard time when it comes to imports and customs taking forever
This looks sick
got it as a gift from my guild's secret santa
good thing about playing Love Nikki: tons of artsy people in the guild
Nice nice
anyways, the build for tonight:
the baby blue mix doesn't look quite right
I really need Cerakeys to make another batch of the White Crazed
The mix didn't work
I ended up ordering the matching set instead
Good thing I recently won a giveaway from Cerakey:
Nice
Congratulations
I saw you painted the plate of the keeb in one of your videos. what type of paint did you use? @jolly coral
Nothing special, just the Rust-Oleum stuff from Walmart
Ah you got that type of paint there that is cool since it was color changing
So spray paint or automotive paint since I know rust-oleum does both
Ah nice that is textured paint
Just the normal stuff
The stuff with color shifting crystals
OK cool I watched several of your videos and was like that is cool
My keyboard will be here tomorrow and keycaps will be here today so I will use it with factory switches for now until the come next week so the board will go under surgery probably next weekend
The base layer
Nice
I have seen that paint before homedepot has a larger selection the my local walmart
And the color shift top coat was called "Purple Sunrise"
I didn't get a picture of the can as I was spraying in the dark
This was the stuff, but I got it from my local hardware store: https://a.co/d/72NCG1Z
Not going to pay shipping for spray paint
Literally double the cost from physical stores because of shipping
Most places will have it
anyways, I've done a few Keeb now, here's the Circuit Keeb (#1071070910989209661 message), done in gold:
Cherrylicious Keeb (#1071070910989209661 message) was done in "Champagne Pink":
Silver Wolf Keeb (#1071070910989209661 message) was done with Blue Galaxy:
Lastly, the March 7th Keeb (#1071070910989209661 message) was done with Blue Galaxy also, but with a light purple base:
@spiral portal, hope that gives you some range of ideas
I have one of this, the Cherrylicious Keeb, when bright scenes on my monitor hit the keeb the color changing paint is better appreciated, another perk of this is that I realize easier when it gets dusty 🤣
@jolly coral Thanks it does
looks like i might not have to wait as long for my switches they are leaving China today i think since it is at the airport ready to come to customs and from there the USPS is pretty quick since they will land in my state
Reminds me of those symbols in gow
We've had this discussion when I first shared I had finished this board, like a month ago
I think it was before October
Late November
man i did not realize that the Keeb was that heavy
Did you get it?
Yeah I got the board just have not made it to the community mailboxes to get the keycaps
wow the stock switches are not too bad but still take a little more pressure then i like so it is slowing me down typing
i bet the pheonix switches will be a bit better
so question say i was buying switches and key caps already what bare bones board is the best to use for that i noticed on amazon and a few other sites that there are some boards that come without them and you add them yourself
glad you talked me into those pheonix switches i really don't like how clacky the factory KEEB switches are
Fluffy Lavenders are pretty light at 36gf actuation and 45gf bottom out
Both Pegasus and Phoenix are 45gf actuation and 60gf bottom out
If you're looking for light tactile switches, I would have to change my recommendation
hmm maybe it is just how their key caps are since the head is small
You really need to look into the Gateron Weightlessness or WS Light Tactile
These are sold in packs of 10 each. 1 quantity refers to 10 switches. While the Gateron Weightlessness might not make your fingers defy gravity, it is super smooth and its sound will have you over the moon. We love the sound profile. A grounded choice for smooth tactile switch. Gateron Weightlessness tactile switches =
These are sold in packs of 10 each. 1 quantity refers to 10 switches. The WS Light Tactile Switch is the perfect choice for users seeking a smooth and responsive tactile experience without overwhelming force. WS Light Tactile Switch provides a gentle light tactile bump, making it ideal for both typing and gaming enthus
Amazon has the WS Light Tactile too: https://a.co/d/0cEdowS
i will probably get use to them but i will definitely need fat finger caps it seems if i hit it square they are fine so it might just be the cap top size that is my issue since i am having to watch my self and not hit the lower edge
Well, good thing you have new keycaps coming
Anyways, as for barebone keyboards, I can definitely give you some recommendations
As I have built a few boards now
yeah i will go get them tomorrow but i will use it as is until i get the Pheonix switches that way i can do it all together at one time
Always start by figuring out the layout
Did you get Phoenix or Pegasus?
Because Phoenix is linear
i keep saying Pheonix but I got the Pegasus my bad i was set on the pheonix at first is why
yeah they are the blue ones
Seems like you want another keyboard
i want to make a backup board or one i can travel with
Here are your most common sizes:
i figured it would be cheaper to go barebones, custom switches and kaps it would be cheaper then buying a pre-built board and storing the factory caps
Depends
But let's start by figuring out layout
#⌨-keeb-tkl is the classic 80% TKL layout
80% is perfect since i would like having the full 9 keys for print screen - page down
i would say probably no more then $150 without the caps and switches but prefer around or just under $100
Plastic or metal?
i will pay good money usually for good gear
does not matter as long as iot is good quality
Do you need RGB?
it can be ether honestly
Easy recommendation: https://www.qwertykeys.com/products/evo80
Please note: Two shipping methods are available for the Evo80—sea freight (30–35 days after we send out the package) and DHL Air Shipping (7–10 days after we send out the package). Expand the shipping method menu on the checkout page to select your preferred option. Sea freight option is only available for non-remote a
The only sub-$200 keyboard with spring mounts
If you want to save with shipping, order from a US vendor (Divinikey or Mechanical Keyboards)
ok
Doesn't sound like you're super price sensitive
But just don't want to overspend
There are quite a few colors to choose from
nope i work IT for a living so Quality = Price but i never got into making my own keyboards until now
And it's truly one of the best premium boards on the market right now
would the QK80 MK2 be another option if i wanted to spend a bit more
Yes
If you like that LCD screen
You lose some keys for that novelty item
I personally find it unnecessary
I prefer having the extra keys
yeah I hardly used the one on my Apex Pro
Well, do realize that QK80 is a gasket mount and not leaf spring
i was only thinking cause it was wireless unless i missed that on the Evo80
But with the QK80, you get the RGB option as well as more plate choices
and honestly i could care less if it was not
But yeah, leaf springs some next level comfort stuff
if i did not need a wireless one is there an option with leaf springs
No
ok then i will take a look
The next closest one with leaf springs are the BD75 from Angry Miao
But it's a 75%
And over twice as expensive as the Evo80
yeah at $350 original price
But you get some real carbon fiber and other exotic materials
yeah and a builtin wrist rest
My BD75 build: #1071070910989209661 message
if i was desperate i could just move the print screen-page Down keys to my stream deck
Layers
I have mine programmed into the second layer
does not always work in games
Annoying in games, but not impossible
But yeah, let's not mess with 75%
Evo80
yeah that is where the streamdeck comes in handy i even have a custom 3d printed mount for my deck in my cockpit setup
so i take it your daily board is an Evo80 then
Nope, I haven't gotten mine yet
I've used my Q3 as my daily for the longest time
oh
#1071070910989209661 message
The Evo80 literally came out in September 2024
I was waiting for the reviews
I have 3 ordered now
My actual daily driver right now is a 96%
I'll eventually get around to posting this one
you like the south facing LEDs it seems
But it's a budget board called AULA F99 Pro: https://a.co/d/dXe5dey
So so, I just need the 96% layout
Most of the 96% has the 1800 layout instead and don't have any of the navigation keys
I need some keys between the numpad and alphas
ah i downsized from a full size to 80% so i can gain a bit of desk space
Well, recently I've been playing a game that needs a lot of keys
lol
So I have the F99 remapped to some weird keys
The numpad doesn't actually type numbers
sounds a lot like modded skyrim now a days with all the custom attack animations and stuff
So the beauty of having more keys
use that num pad for those macros
Exactly
With #1071070910989209661, you have to think a little bit differently
Nearly all have key remapping and macro
because my laptop has the 10 key on it i can get away from it on my main real keyboard of not having it
A huge part of going custom is the ability to reprogram your keyboard
Or get a numpad
yeah i noticed that as well on the KEEB they allow you to macro almost the whole board iof you want
Anyways
Yup
Anyways, I would order an Evo80
Choose your favorite color
you can see what i mean by the sides of the caps i keep hitting the i and o together
And when choosing the plate option:
PP is softer, and will give you more of a "thock" sound
FR4 is harder, so will give you more of a "click" sound
But both are plastic plates, so won't be too harsh of click
If you did go metal plate, you can get some interesting sounds
And a very hard typing experience
But kind of defeats the purpose of having the whole leaf spring mounts
yeah me no like the clicky sound even the Clack of stock Lavenders is annoying that i put my headphones on in my home office i have sound proofed for my 2000w surround sound system
Then definitely choose the PP plate
I will go the Iceberg with a Re:Zero theme once I get that board just ordered it and i will order some switches for it
I just ordered it from one of the US companies
Yeah, it's going to take 4-6 weeks for the board to get to you
Lead times are huge for actual custom stuff
yeah
Because they literally don't make it until you order it
But Qwertykeys are just killing it right now with the prices they are charging
that is good from a business stand point as it keeps overstock low
We'll figure out the switches once you've tried the Pegasus
It's a good starting point
yeah if i like them i will probably just get another set
It'll make your #⌨-keeb-tkl quiet
yeah then i can go back to the rave while i work
No more clicking sound
Beauty of silent switches
yep i work nights since i work on Japan Time so i sound proofed my office so i don't wake my wife up
@jolly coral I take it your custom builds are for a side business for others
What do you mean?
I don't do business
It's a hobby
Like building Legos or #1304836373194215555
oh expensive hobby then
Have you seen Lego prices recently?
yeah some of them are now $100+ for some of those sets
do you just store them after your done
I have a wall of keyboards
lol
like people do with motherboards that work at repair shops
i am watching some of your timelapse builds is why i was asking
change your board to fit your mood for the day lol
Might be a repost, but where the keyboards are stored in the house right now
My wife has 2 drawers, she doesn't like them out
I have the original big wall with 100%/96% and 80%/75%
A dedicated 80%/75%, mostly HE boards now wall
nice
What's the keyboard transparent-pink on bottom right, second pic called? 👀
plus you can't go wrong with the 12" Miku Figures above
Leobog K81: https://a.co/d/cKTzquf
Build post was here: #1071070910989209661 message
That's for #1217473726598221925 thread
I have walls of figures and toys in the house too
yeah and those are not cheap ether I keep all mine in a room at my house in Kyoto cause my Wife said I had too many for sure
#off-topic message
One of the walls in the house
nice collection i see some there that are worth a pretty penny now
These are just the ones out in display
I have a storage unit

Climate controlled
The staircase to the basement: #general message
Those are just a couple of photos I've posted before here on this server
Anyways
lol you sound like me the room at my house is as big as some small one bed apartments and i have the walls lined with glass shelves and 4 way glass cabinets in rows now i only keep a few here in Cali since I mainly buy them while I am there in Japan
Big junk collector here
I use AmiAmi a lot
Exchange rate was quite favorable for US for a bit
yeah that is a good collectables exporter
And shipping is not bad if you're not in a hurry
Never should be if you want it in one piece when you get it
I remembered from this, i havent seen sekushi for a while now
damn you have second season Snow Miku that alone is worth some serious cash now since it was limited edition and no reprints ever in the snow miku series
Like that one time when a figure arrived moldy
#1217473726598221925 message
lol well at least you learned how to clean them
Thank you, YouTube
well that was nice of them an you got to keep it
Not worth it for a 10 year old prize figure
true
The tag was for like 600-800 yen
They didn't even bother removing that
Probably found it at some flea market in a remote part of Japan
Anyways
Keyboards
Got a fresh shipment today, so going to get busy now that the wife and kids have gone to bed
Dang looks premium
It's the company that made the Evo80, Qwertykeys
I just went through and ordered "one of everything" from their website
The QK100 was the first to arrive
Definitely a premium board and will require some care to assemble
Probably will do that one last
Is that fragile?
No, just annoying sometimes if you don't install something right
The whole board comes in pieces
Ohhhh ic
Damn
You have to put everything together
Pretty sure u will get the job done without any problems
It's definitely not a pre-built
I usually do
And I customize as I see fit as I'm assembling
That's why these premium boards are always in pieces
So the user can build as they see fit
Yeah tru
Ohh that nice
nice have fun
guess I wont be buying switches and caps from AliExpress any more make one purchase and now they disabled my account for no reason i am fighting it though it says my appeal was Accepted but i still can't log in good thing i have my tracking number saved and can use the global shipping tracker to track it
it might be that they are going to ban the US from usage or something since that is the reason for the disabling of the account they give en_US so hope you wont have issues ether @jolly coral\
My AliExpress account is working great
Maybe you've missed a confirmation email that went to spam or something
It happens
Lots of shady stuff on AliExpress though
Fun times
ok good it just must be me then i am working on appealing it but I might just say screw it
It's essentially what Amazon would be like if no seller moderation was done
Order from Drop
Not as consistent of stock, but you'll always get your order
As for switches, there are several good online vendors, and you don't have to go through AliExpress
If you're unsure of a vendor, just ask me, I've probably ordered from them before
Going through a large vendor is also nice because you can browse through the various switches
They usually have the switches sales page in a much more intuitive (to an enthusiast) layout
AliExpress is just a jungle, sometimes is just not worth the hassle to save a couple of bucks
yeah only got the switches there cause they were cheaper and on sale but yeah might not be worth it in the long run
https://parcelsapp.com/ <-- Great for tracking international packages that use local shipping company like china does even gives you the next tracking number when it gets to the USA
i will probably start getting my switches on milktooth, Amazon, or ebay
I might buy another cheap board to play with different switch types i found some nice boards that has no switches or caps for around $80-120 that i might get one of as well just to see how other switches work to find that one perfect one
I highly recommend the Galaxy80
Crazy foam board with a metal case. The definition of "thock"
Otherwise, the Hi75 is a solid budget board as well: https://a.co/d/7UcwOoN
LEOBOG Hi75 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard Kit, fashionable appearance design, 75% matching column keyboard, aluminum alloy metal shell, gasket structure, delicate soft and elastic hand feeling. --Gaming keyboard keycaps and mechanical switches can be adapted to the market LEOBOG brand switches and p...
Aluminum case, per key RGB
Just built one last night:
Getting the Hi75 will also give you a chance to try out the 75% layout and see if you like it
That's a plastic case
And a 75% layout
If I'm going plastic, I want something at least interesting, like a transparent case: https://a.co/d/gMrz7iT
Or this fake carbon fiber stuff: #1071070910989209661 message
It's currently at $21.59
@spiral portal, that's a $21 keyboard with hot-swappable sockets, key RGB, side RGB, and a scroll wheel
well that is cheap
lol yeah
that is why i was looking at the $80+ range but some on sale are under that but i was looking at the original non-sale price
It's going to be pretty hard to beat the sound and performance of the Galaxy80
And the Hi75
But the most popular "custom keyboard" on Amazon has to be this one: https://a.co/d/gyv9TAu
Not sure why the F75 is so popular
yeah i will probably grab the Galaxy80 since it is only $60
But it's insanely overpriced relative to the competition now for plastic keyboards
probably due to the color LCD screen
Here's the typing test with the VTER (Epomaker) Galaxy 80 after installing some switches and Cerakey keycaps.
Board: VTER Galaxy 80 - White
Switches: Durock Ice King Tactile 68gf
Keycaps: Cerakey Blue Crazed Ceramic Cherry Profile
This was going to be my next post
But I haven't gotten a chance to sit down to write yet
That's the definition of thock
That case is so foamed up, I struggle a little to install the switches because everything is just so squishy
yeah that would would be too loud for me but some silent switches might do it on it
Planning my first keyboard build feels like being thrown into the deep end but my legs are tied and I don't know how to swim
Look around here (upper messages), dihydroxide has made enough keyboards that I can guarantee one will catch your attention
Very true, there's so many 🫡
Start with deciding on a layout:
80% I'm a software dev and I think that's the most compact I could comfortably go while still being able to work
75 feels too cramped for my thick fingers
So 80% + a numpad
Yup basically. Separate numpad for when needed
I was like that, but I've gotten used to 75% now
The smaller stuff, not so much
I shall keep that in mind then! Ty
So you're essentially looking for the same keyboard as Ichirou
If you're in the $150 range, Evo80 is the best TKL you can buy at that range right now
But no RGB
Fair, im willingly to shell out a bit for one, budget maybe 300-350 for it?
But if I don't need to spend it all then I won't
Is it worthwhile to go for hotswaps vs soldering?
Hot swap
Don't mess with soldering
Most #1071070910989209661 have hot swap now
Sick sounds good
The keyboard im moving from is Razers Black Widow Chroma and it feels like "too much"? Way too loud and distracting for sure, too "sharp"
So the Razer Green Clicky switches?
Sounds like this? #1071070910989209661 message
Exactly, they're a bit to sharp for my brain to focus properly
Then stay away from Clicky switches
Easily avoidable
But yeah, back to the keyboard recommendation
At the 200-300 range, you also have the two Hall Effect keyboards that I would recommend
Wooting 80HE: https://wooting.io/wooting-80he
And the newly released (this week) Keychron Q3 HE:
Keychron Q3 HE is a full metal QMK wireless keyboard with Magnetic Hall Effect switches. These switches offer precise actuation, rapid trigger, and adjustable actuation points. Connect the Q3 HE with up to 3 devices through Bluetooth for seamless multitasking across Mac, Windows, and Linux.
I haven't gotten my Keychron HE keyboard yet
Just ordered it
Based on other people that got the K2, seems like Keychron is positioned to be the closest to catch up to Wooting
Wooting is the definitive leader of the HE keyboard
At the moment
HE switches are Linear, meaning that you don't get tactile feedback until you "bottom out" (keycap hitting the switch plate)
But since you can adjust the actuation point of the HE switches, you can set the actuation point low so that you don't get accidental triggers
Does that affect the travel distance required for response time? I do some light gaming from fps to MOBA with friends.
Making them slightly more functional/productive outside of gaming scenarios
This probs answered that
So HE is probably the best of both worlds in my case
Sort of
Sounds are not the best compared to the better mechanical keyboards
That makes sense
But definitely an improvement over your current plastic thing
For sure. can HE keyboards also use non HE switches?
No
And worse yet, they're not interchangeable
Between brands
Wooting uses Lekker switches
And Keychron is using Gateron
My 80HE build (that I'll post at some point)
The orange/red is the gaming profile
The white/pink is the normal profile
Wooting has the slick profile switching function
So you can literally adjust the entire keyboard setting with the put of a button
Gaming profile has the actuation point at 0.4mm
And normal profile has it at 2.0mm
With your budget, you can probably get both. A pre-built 80HE is priced at $200
Ooh okay
I don't mind doing the build
Sounds like fun and I'd probably enjoy the process and understand everything better
And ordering the Evo80 from a US vendor will cost you $170
Then get more Qwertykeys keyboards later
They literally come in pieces
(build from last night)
Took me about 1.5 hours to get it to look like this:
I feel my brain would enjoy this way too much
A bit much in my opinion for a first time builder
It's very very fun and satisfying
Browse around Qwertykeys: https://www.qwertykeys.com/
Building things and working through processes is usually the best part about doing anything like this
See all the options
But start with some good pre-builts so you can begin typing first
And eventually as you explore more, you can make a more informed decision about which build you want to dive head into
Yeah I'll probably pick up the wooting 80HE first, I saw they have the option to get the barebones and then pick switches and caps.
So I might do that so I can atleast build some of it and understand how to fix things
The Mode Loop is pretty much out of stock anyway
Gets very expensive quick
Going custom can easily reach past $300, especially with their metal case
I wasn't super impressed with their metal case TBH
This is the metal case
Yeah, I travel for work sometimes and if I wanted to bring it with me I feel the metal case would be too hefty
See much difference from the plastic case? #1071070910989209661 message
It's very heavy
Well, relative to your current plastic thing
Yup yup, I think Wooting 80 HE with the plastic case
Black case is a good place to start
Get some keycaps from Amazon
Is there any particular difference between the Lekker L45 and L60?
Throw them on and call it a day
Weight
I found the L60 to be a bit too heavy
Noted
There's also the Gateron Jade's
At least those are the three they market when getting the module rather than pre-built
My childhood asian drink was turned into keycaps
Oh my
Elevate your keyboard with the stunning TUT YAKEYLT CHERRY PROFILE KEYCAPS SET! Crafted from high-quality PBT material, these keycaps are durable and resistant to wear and tear. Their ergonomic design provides optimal comfort for extended typing sessions, while the vibrant colors add a touch of style to your desk setup. Pre-order now and be the ...
Yeah, if you want the clear case like me, this is how I would order it:
I feel like I might paint the case and customize it
Then I would get white plastic
Skip the primer step
Heck, get an extra case while you order
Fits well with my panda y70 even if I don't end up painting right away
Should I get the switch lube and tool kit??
Really not necessary
Most switches come pre-lubed now
Shold I grab the tool kit for building?
You will need some GPL-205 eventually for lubing stabilizers
Do you have a micro screwdriver set?
Yup
Something like this
It comes for free
Oh
That's the aviator stuff
And you should just get something more fun from Amazon
And match whatever color you decide to paint
Wrist wrest, I've never used one, do they actually help??
Last thing, current lead time for an 80HE is 6 weeks:
Absolutely
Fine with me, my new pc build doesn't fully complete till March. I can stay with the black widow till it arrives
Current cart
I recommend this silicone one: https://a.co/d/4gddSuo
Yeah, the wrist rest is slightly cheaper on Amazon
But you won't get the Wooting logo
So up to you
Wooting isn't overcharging for that wrist rest
It's the same silicone one
Noted okay
I think this cart and the caps I sent are my current final thought
Which with your help has saved me from my already week long indecision
If you're ordering stuff from Unikeys
Shop for some switches as well
For that eventual Evo80 build
Roger that!!
It's a shame wootings discount from getting the module doesn't apply to both cases
Not going to lie, my most recent Unikeys order
MMD Princess is definitely a good place to start
How many switches should I get, 11 sets of 10?
Unikeys has 3 versions of them
If you're sticking to TKL, x90
That'll cover the 75% as well
Sick, thank you. Seriously, I would've spent another month pondering and stressing over what to pick
But that Yakult kit is super fun
The clear PC accent keycaps are super fun
My current daily driver is a PBT/PC mix
I'm trying to pick between the translucent or opaque
You have to get both
The PC keycaps are accent keys
Well the hiragana base kit covers the entire layout doesn't it?
Correct
You have to start with one of these 2
Yeah I was thinking the hiragana
And the hiragana novelties too
But I'll grab the translucent while I'm at it
These 3 are the novelties:
A bit overbudget including the wooting but ehh who cares
Up to you, but that's going to be quite a few keys to choose from
Yeah a bit of a shame the lettering isn't translucent
They usually aren't
Makes sense
Shine-through keycaps have wear issues
Interesting. Will the lighting show under the caps?
That's why I prefer side-print
Absolutely
80HE has pretty bright LEDs
Okay Coolio
Those translucent PC keycaps will be blinding
I might shy away from the translucents then
Overall 340 before tax for everything. Not too bad honestly
Not considering that I haven't picked those princess switches yet for the evo80
MMD makes budget switches
Shouldn't cost much at all
It's those fancy keycaps that you need to be careful of in this hobby
Lol yeah not surprising. Beauty is costly
For reference, HYTE's Songque set is $130:
Also a big set with a ton of novelties
At least the Yakult set can be purchased separately
My friend is addicted to the hoyoverse and is buying one of the collab sets. He is now broke lol
Still cheaper than high fashion, speaking of "beauty" that cost a ton
Nothing truer than that. I bought some Arcane merch from a brand I follow, god damn.
Well maybe I will get my switches in a few days they already cleared us customs
well I need to figure out how i want to do this modification to the KEEB
Fun times ahead
yeah trying to decide if i want to paint the top or use a frosting technique on the plastic since the key caps i got are pretty much white with grey and some black
You mean the plastic etch stuff? That's fun
But I thought the standard glass etching cream doesn't work on acrylic? https://www.reddit.com/r/cricut/comments/yzkdni/etching_cream_on_acrylic_ornaments/
Or are you thinking about scratching with a random orbital sander?
yeah more a etching process
Interesting
they also make a frosting spray paint as well
Yeah, that's for glass
Not acrylic
works on acrylic too
clean the acrylic with alcohol and then apply 3-4 coats
But yeah, there's a frost acrylic diffuser layer on the Keeb already
there is so might only need 1-2 coats to dull it down a bit more
Fun times
i plan to spray paint the plate off white at the very least
since you can dim the LEDs if you want but sadly that also effects the the key leds
Satin is popular right now
they should have made it in zones
Maybe go satin white with the plate
Ill be officially placing keyboard component orders this weekend when I get back home from the holidays.
Couldn't have done it with you. You're the best.
Can't wait to see your build
Be sure to share here after you finish
Well tonight is keyboard surgery night. Switches come today in the regular mail. And aliexpress re-activated my account too.
Well I got really unlucky I think my switches were returned since 90% of them had bend pins. Nothing a pair of electronic needle nose pliers can't fix but it is done for now just have to decide if I want to edit the case
They're always slightly bent
I just push them back with my finger
As long as they're not completely smashed in
ah i mean full on almost bent flat to the base of the switch or full curl to them
like someone tried to install them backwards
Oh
If you got it from Amazon
I would ask for a replacement
And tell Amazon you're not going to return this set
Since they're so messed up
yeah if i did i would but after all the issues with AliExpress I just fixed them my self since I am used to fixing bent CPU pins on others PCs
Oh, you didn't get these from Amazon
probably why they were so much cheaper then Amazon
Dang, these got to you quick if you've ordered from AliExpress
Probably
yeah about 6 days
yeah that is the reason i fixed them myself and they work just fine
But yeah, flat nose pliers it is
none were broken just bent
they have alittle more push back and firmness then i like but minus the pin issue it is fine i can get use to them and they are not totally whisper quiet but enough it is not a bother
the kepcaps are good and have a slight rough texture reminiscent of old 90s-early 2K keyboards but are nice and smooth with no issues
I will say that putting in the first few switches into the Keeb was a pain in the ass i had to press down hard to get them to seat into the PCB but after around 10 or so it became easier with way less pressure
These are lighter and silent https://a.co/d/6MPonEq
yeah i saw those on Milktooth
And here is another one with a clear top for better RGB transmission: https://milktooth.com/products/switches/silent-bluish-white
With a medium tactile feel, these switches offer a satisfying level of resistance when pressed, giving you a precise and comfortable typing experience. Despite their medium tactility, the Silent Bluish Whites are far from loud. In fact, these switches are designed to be as quiet as possible, making them perfect for office or shared living space ...
yeah
Lastly, these are probably the quietest lightweight tactile on the market right now: https://drop.com/buy/idobao-kailh-elf-ultra-silent-mechanical-switches
But slightly on the pricey side at 35 for $25
But you want the Purple Elf
I will run with these for a while but my next build i will probably a liner switch https://milktooth.com/products/switches/silent-sakura-43g
We are excited to present the Silent Sakura switches, meticulously engineered to deliver a whisper-quiet typing experience reminiscent of gentle raindrops tapping against a window. With an ultra-light 43g bottom out force, these switches are perfect for light typists seeking a subtle and serene typing environment.
Can't help you there, I don't do Linear
i have 2 more boards coming the galaxy80 and the Evo80 so i will be getting several more different types of switches
yeah i just want to test them out but so far i can get use to these Pegasus Switches it will jsut take me a day or 2
The stats on paper looks good
4mm total travel with 2mm pre-travel
yeah they spring is just a be stiffer then i am use to
Light spring with 37g actuation and 43g bottom out
Pegasus is not exactly a heavy switch either with 45g actuation
The tactile force is 60g, so that's what you may be feeling
it might be since I normaly dont feel the bottom out
@jolly coral
that is nice
I take it that keyboard has only per key LEDs to do that
No, that's just some of the LED programs on the Wonier
Very typical stuff
Pretty sure it's this one:
@jolly coral well I already got use to the Pegasus switches they are not bad at all.
KBDFans requiring $450+ for free shipping is heartbreaking
That's like one fancy keyboard with a set of switches and keycaps
But I just need capsss
I thought you were ordering from Unikeys?
I ended up ordering a set after our chat
Along with some other stuff to take full advantage of the initial 10% discount
The hiragana set went out of stock when I was about to order
But KBDfans has stock but adds an extra 30 for shipping and handling
That's unfortunate
Ill just have to wait till they get new stock for now
I type with Romanji for Japanese, so having the hiragana isn't as crucial for me
Thats fair, I type in Hiragana usually but also I like the look of the kit with the characters
True but $100 vs $70 is a fairly large difference considering unikeys free shipping
I would probably email Unikeys to see if they would actually restock
Don't wait around if they're not restocking
They did restock after initially launch and fulfillment in August
But I think I'll just bite the bullet on KBDfans. Atleast their aliexpress store is a bit cheaper
That's usually pre-order extras
AliExpress also has coupons right now
Ah
You go over $99, you get $12 off
It's 92, but hey 89 is better than 92
Bought
Wait, did you not use coupons?
I used the coupons

Im excited
Idk if I wanna make the whole keyboard yakult themed or make it match my y70. I wanna make my y70 toothless and lightfury themed from how to train your dragon
Get another keyboard: https://swagkeys.com/products/in-stock-transition-lite-tkl
Introducing the Transition Lite, an entry-level keyboard that is modelled after the Transition TKL. It is made with injection-molded Polycarbonate and comes with a silicone pad to reduce hollowness that comes with plastic keyboards. The PCB provides full VIA support and RGB+Underglow. The clear case is able to present
There's a transparent red case that I'm planning to use my keycaps on
Don't tempt me and my wallet like this
Really good deal for $50
Grab a set of the V3 Knight stabs while you're paying for shipping
The PCB has under glow to maximize the clear case effect:
You're a bad influence
You're on the #1071070910989209661 channel
Im using some tax return money to buy myself a 3d printer
So I could just try to make a wooting case
The stock Wooting case is starting to grow on me
The transparent plastic is quite nice
But yeah, here's supposedly the best stabs on the market: https://swagkeys.com/products/sw-knight-stabilizer
SW Knight PCB-mounted Screw-in Stabilizers - This is a screw-in stabilizer using a new silicon double shot mold. - Both the stem and housing are injection-treated. This process effectively reduces rattling sounds that are made when:1. the stem makes contact with the housing2. the wires makes contact with the stem - Thi
Ordered a few sets while I was paying for shipping:
So much money

Hmm, really tempting for the 80HE
GT-80 Case It has been a year since the release of the Tofu60 Redux case, and we have received an abundance of positive feedback from our users. Following the launch of the Wooting 80HE by the Wooting team, an increasing number of users have inquired about a compatible case. In response to this demand, our team is exci

#1071070910989209661 message
yeah, but the gold side badge is not available without the little strap hanger
Thats fine, Ill take the strap hanger too lol
I feel like you've literally made a keyboard with everything
I have a few builds
Lol a few seems like an understatement
just helped Shin made this one today/tonight:
I have a $50 gift card and so I trying to find a numpad to use it on
Q0 Max
CNC machined aluminum case Double gasket mount design with steel plate and screw-in PCB mount stabilizers ARM Cortex-M4 chip (MCU) 1000 Hz polling rate in wired and 2.4 GHz mode Connect 3 ways- wired with USB-C cable, Bluetooth 5.1, and 2.4 GHz Programmable with QMK and VIA South-facing RGB LED Premium acoustic foam in
US Stock
ships free
1 of 2 that I've done recently:
2 of 2 that I've done recently:
the 4 layers I have my Q0 (1 of 2) programmed:
I actually ran out of functions
but you technically can unlock 8 layers with QMK
yes, the 3rd layer is a one handed keyboard
most of the numpads don't come with enough keys
but that extra column on the Q0 makes it incredible versatile
Hmm
This requires adding another $50 from my personal funds hmmm
Why does shell white only come with gateron banana??
Get the barebone
Nevermind
That's only for Black
But you're getting a metal numpad
Most of the cheaper numpads are plastic and still cost as much as a whole keyboard
Isnt the yunzi $50??
And the Keychron Q0 barebone is $100
I hate vanilla giftcards. I need to use the $50 balance but to get the Q0 I need to add it to my bank account
Lol yea, we're figuring out workarounds. I'm buying that Q0 Max if it's the last thing I do
haha
it's a good purchase
very very versatile
it's permanently sitting on my desk now
basically a macro pad
since you can assign macro to every key
all with QMK/VIA
purchased lol
Oh dang
Did you paint the case? If so what was your process???
Sand and spray
Nothing fancy
Okay, and it doesn't mess up the aluminum at all??
Okay okay, noted. I got the white case for easier painting so hopefully it'll be fair bit simple
I wanna match either the cream or the red on the yakult keycaps. Either one color each for the 80HE and Q0 Max or the same color for both
The 80HE will be easy since it's a plastic case. The Q0 will probably be a bit more of a process
Most posts recommend a self-etching primer. Is that required or regular primer just fine?
Okie
True that. Now to figure out the color mix to match the key caps
Lack of color theory here we come
Just go to the spray paint aisle
Don't mix it yourself
Grab the matching color off the shelf
But what if I can't find it?
I live in a small ass town in the middle of nowhere so I've only got a tiny walmart
Walmart has it
Rust-Oleum
But do they have the matching color is the real question
Or will I suffer in "close enough" hell
I would actually spray it "foil red": https://www.michaels.com/product/krylon-premium-metallic-foil-paint-10658969
Contrasts the keycaps better
Otherwise, get Amazon to ship to you: https://a.co/d/81fQCb1
Dupli-Color Metalcast Anodized Coating Automotive Spray Paint turns ordinary chrome pieces into a bright, transparent-colored metallic finish in an easy one-step process. This high gloss, red vehicle spray paint has a durable enamel finish and is oil, gas, and heat resistance up to 500°F intermit...
That will look great
The enamel coating will make sure the spray is more durable
Going with the automotive sprays, you'll need to hit it with an additional coat of clear
I would definitely go that route
For red, you'll need grey primer
Extra coats of clear are fine
Don't skip the primer
Interesting I didn't realize specific colors had better primer colors
Yes
That's the key
Use the right primer color

Better color adhesions and color accuracy
Don't know if you've noticed this detail, but after Lightning McQueen's big wreck in Cars 3
His primer color was grey
Wow I never thought that was like a specific thing
Stopped by my local Walmart, and now I want to paint a red one
Or maybe a more fun color like one of the neons
Lmao
I'm going to try to paint a candy red:
picking up where I've left off with my keyboard adventures, the next keyboard to get built was the first of several keyboards that I was testing for Cerakey's Blue Crazed keycaps:
I got my first set of Cerakey in purple around about half a year ago: #1071070910989209661 message
it wasn't the best experience and I wasn't super impressed with their offering
I think I was mostly still recovering from the whole Awekeys incidence and wanted to avoid "exotic" keycaps for a while
but when I saw the Blue Crazed color restocking, I took the leap and purchased a set
the biggest issue from the previous build with Cerakey is that they're heavier than your normal PBT
they also made a metallic ping against any metal plates
I ended up purchasing an Epomaker Galaxy 80 with a ton of foam and a soft PC plate:
I had previously written off the Galaxy 80 because of just how crazy soft/foamy the entire setup was: #1071070910989209661 message
but I really do think this would be the perfect fit for the weird Cerakey keycaps
just like I remembered, the Galaxy 80 is a marvel of cheap keyboards with a metal case
everything is just crazy budget oriented from the plain design to the plate mounted stabilizers:
at least the stabilizers are well lubed
since the Cerakey keycaps are slightly heavier than normal, I opted to use some Durock switches with heavier springs:
Here's the Durock Ice King Tactile switches (68g) on the Galaxy 80, unlit:
and here's the lit version of the Galaxy 80 with the Durock Ice King Tactile:
