if anything it would be the default starting Knight Set, as that was most often shown in things like the Ringed City trailers

As a graphic designer I've always wanted to learn how to do this. Does it just come from practice or did you get formal training for it?

I had mix, formal training is great introduction but its by no means make you better at it per say. Depends on individuals, I had mileage from studying and practicing on my own after my time in a formal art education, which was mediocre stuff. I don't see it different from learning anything, its about learning and trying things out. I bounce off other people's work and took in things I liked, looked at references and process of other artists and bounced off those.

Formal training is questionable because you as the learner have to be absorbing and grasping the knowledge passed on. Just like anything, training doesnt help if you are not in the mind set or the education process doesn't click.

I personally loathe hard work and practice. Not its wrong just questionable of leaving wrong impressions. Its missing a component imo.
Hard work, practice, and working smart is my overly simplified view of it.

I personally think everyone needs to balance effort to make something (hard work), use learned techniques and methods to adequate skill level (practice) and learn techniques and methods (work smarter)
Which is rough to balance. Effort is obvious one, practice is pushing towards mastery of skills ( line work, making shapes, recognize contrast and etc.). Learning to work in different ways for different circumstances is where its gets blurry because some people for dumb reasons call using references as cheating or illegitimate. Photobashing gets bad rep. Not using lasso tool to fill in spaces quickly etc. List goes on and on.

Looking at other works help build your taste, grasp why something works for you but also why it doesn't. Its all about variables per person because it changes by each person.
Obviously investing into something builds skill and ability to draw, cook, bake, make, etc. Its matter of are you really invested in the effort to make things.
I just find art click for me and thats why I pushed my energy into it, likewise im sure each of you have your own investment of energy into something.
