Well we know that Malenia started a war against Radahn for no apparent reason. In the story trailer you can see that she whispered something in his ear, which was expanded upon in the DLC. Also nothing in the base game hinted at Miquella having made his way into the realm of shadow, because it is DLC content. We also know that Miquella tried to make Godwyn die a true death, likely so he could revive him, but that very obviously failed. So Radahn was his second best option
