The only example I could think of for the latter is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, as it comes as a “second part” to the Remake released in 2020, but doesn’t carry progress over from Remake and you don’t need to have Remake to play it, but at this point it is essentially its own game, I don’t know if any dlc that’s ever been released that is playable without the base game it’s for so it’s weird either way

I agree. An "expansion" is a much weightier way of describing content, it comes with expectations companies aren't interested in meeting, and lead to legal disputes.

Publishers do not like having clear definitions of what they are marketing with games, we used to buy games by looking at the back of the box, and if it wasn't right or was just bad, we got our money back and the company would be SOL for lying and releasing garbage.

Not anymore! The same companies release the same unfinished games over and over, kept afloat by MTX so the quality of games doesnt matter, as long as the usual victims participate in the monetization schemes.

I.e. the first "quadruple-A game" Skull and Bones tricking the world once again lol. People are buying trailers rather than games now.

I'd say that's selective memory. Buggy games have always existed. Something like day one Skyrim would be considered unplayable if it came out today. Even if we agree there's been a meaningful rise in this since say a decade ago It would have to be because games have way bigger scopes on a fronts like game-play and visuals, thus should take much more time and manpower to complete but the market expects them to release at the same rate.

Devs and publishers diffidently care if their game comes out unfinished, it means they'll be critically panned and therefore make less money.

Something like Cyberpunk came out in the state it did was because of crunch and shareholder deadlines. It's not because they thought anything along the lines of "we can just fix it later."

Day one Skyrim was unplayable when it was released. It's not just the bugs it's the apathy towards gameplay loops, stories, design, and faulty business models. In the past, the only way game companies made money was by making a game that a lot of people liked enough to buy. This had tragic results for great but underappreciated games like Painkiller and Earthbound, but it did ensure that the release version of a game was tested to make sure the average expirence was enjoyable enough, given the developers and publishers were competent enough.
We have the potential to make great games, FromSoft, CD Projekt Red, and Bethesda do it, but there's simply more monetary interest in creating games for whales and relying on streamers to advertise for you.

Good clarification, I agree with pretty much all of that. I just don't think the implication devs don't care about QA is accurate. The incentive to make "live service" season pass BS is a massive problem in the industry right now but it's a separate issue. A broken launch will screw over those games too. Point being companies are pretty much always incentivized to release working games.

Devs are just employees, I think they care about their job to the levels we all care about our jobs. Like, I work at Wendy's and as much as I hate it I do take some pride in making the food well. I just think the devs are so heavily constrained with crunch, unreasonable goals, and abusive company practices (this industry still practices blacklisting for example). These issues are usually the business side, I like most modern games, even the unethical ones. Like, my favorite game rn is Total War: Warhammer III and that game is chock-full of unethical stuff. In an ideal world, games would be more reliant on broad appeal rather than hoping a few guys are sunk-costed into throwing them their money like a slumlord.

Story time. As a part of my city tour, I found myself on what's basically an anime convention. The problem is, I have basically never seen a single anime, and the overwhelming amount of body pillows and smelly armpits almost made me leave. But then I saw it. The L2 stick. There was also the axe of godrick and GUGS, both made of actual metal. Unfortunately, they were too expensive for my budget, so I ended up getting the fearsome red toothpick. God bless BANDAI Namco and From Soft for being from Japan, and saving me in this unusual way.
