it’d be a weird disconnect between the legacy dungeons and the rest of the game in that case imo, an open world Victorian era BB esque setting wouldn’t be bad per se, but I don’t think it’d be as good as you’d think and it definitely wouldn’t be able to hit the same kind of high points BB was able to on account of its linearity

An open world game with a horror aspect would definitely work. Sure, there would be small little "town" type areas where you wouldn't need to worry about horrors, but then the small safe spots could be surrounded by stuff like misty forests where the visibility is low and a monster can easily jumpscare you, or an area controlled by mutated savages that want to sacrifice you. And of course there would be caves (similar to Elden Ring's cave system) where you go inside and experience horror aspects. Or those could be stuff like abandoned towns or huge mansions

could work yeah, Choo choo charles is a good example; however, horror in the way BB specifically does it probably wouldn’t, considering most of the horror in that game is narrative and focused around the concept of forbidden knowledge and stringing the player along to learn new things about the world at critical moments, you can’t really do that effectively in a truly open world game as it could ruin frights preemptively if you’ve skipped ahead prior and already figured something out

like imagine if you could visit Yaharguhl post Rohm before the nightmare frontier or the hunter’s nightmare, the whole Amygdala grab stuff would lose all of its mystique and intrigue

or visiting Bergenwurth before fighting Amelia and seeing the cutscene with Lawrence, the narrative weight of what was going on with Master Willem and the school and Rohm herself would be totally lost

Also the only way I can picture how that could be worked around is if they made everything look normal until a certain event. Like how in bloodborne you didn't see the absolute off the wall insanity until after rom is defeated or how the mistwood gets a new addition after defeating radahn.

They could probably even make the "Trigger" well hidden, like how they did with astel(who I dislike with great intensity).
