well TLDR: rune farming is boring and there are far more efficent/fun ways to get levels

smithing stones will come in abundance to you later, so just level what weapon you like to use currently rather than farming

and leveling is not a must, you can beat the game at level 1 with enough patience
(not saying you shouldnt level, but i am saying that its not your only source of getting more damage)

The first 2 games are older and slower but they have a lot of unique features that are missing in their predecessors
The one that plays closest to elden ring is DS3

you have three weapons to choose from
each weapon differing in stats
veredicto is a chained mace is slow but has the most range, sarmiento and centella is fast but has the least range, ruego al alba is a balance of two
each weapon is used to solve different part of a puzzles
veredicto can ring bells to create platforms, ruego al alba can break corpse walls and sarmiento and centella can make you teleport through mirrors
you can switch through these three weapons at any given moment for whenever required
you only really need one weapon for combat but weapon switching does have its perks
each weapon has their own skill tree which can be used to unlock more abilities for that weapon and improve existing abilities as you upgrade

dude if you get the Zweihander, make sure to use the Ground Slam ash of war, with heavy preset on it
that shifts its scaling from Str D to Str B

use this and you can MELT through a lot of bosses

Margit, Morgott, Malenia, Radagon, PCR, Rellana, Godskin Duo, Midra, Messmer, Romnia can all be parried with a shield. Maliketh can be parried with an item. Ofc there are way more bosses you can parry but these are the bigger names
