Anyone with the node 1c4e downtown

misty gorge
#

Had this node pop up on my list the other night while I was home. I guess it was just passing through because no sign of it again since. They're out there...

karmic junco
#

Where approximately are you?

misty gorge
karmic junco
#

I think I got permission from someone who lives on the 14th floor along the water on the fdr

#

My issue is the esp32 devices don't update ota

#

So software maintenance is a problem.

misty gorge
#

Will the node be difficult to access?

#

I believe the NRF devices can be updated with a phone and cable pretty easily. Not as easy as wireless, but better than lugging a laptop.

#

It would be cool to get some amateur radio clubs interested in this so they can just throw a node up at one of their sites.

#

I'd be down to donate some money or hardware to get a few nodes up in good locations too.

karmic junco
#

Won't be easy or often

misty gorge
#

probably okay as long as the current firmware doesn't have any major bugs.

karmic junco
#

I have to check the docs. I'm still on 2.1.0

misty gorge
#

You just need the device to resend packets. If there are any major changes, you'll obviously need to update. But maybe you don't need to update on every release.

#

I'm kinda OCD with updating and you may be the same.. just gotta let go. haha

karmic junco
#

I'm OCD with not updating stable stuff

misty gorge
#

that's really the correct way to do it.

#

You're probably okay with just flashing the latest "stable" and throwing it up there.

#

any reason why you're going with the esp devices?

karmic junco
#

Store and forward

#

So it was a combination of reasons. Namely price and avaliability

#

I started with the t beams as it was the most out of the box solution available (other than the echos)

#

And someone on here said echos had issues. I think the issues are mostly resolved.

#

The lora32 were cheaper, and I wanted them for powered installations.

misty gorge
#

The store and forward is really nice.

karmic junco
#

I.e. no battery/charger/etc

#

Just a simple unit, boots up gracefully,

misty gorge
#

The power consumption of the nrf devices is much better.

karmic junco
#

Yes. But as a home base installation, doesn't really matter

misty gorge
#

You could always hook up one of those volaric batteries too.

karmic junco
#

I'll spare the 50ma

karmic junco
misty gorge
#

If power goes out for a little bit then voltaic battery can kick in and keep it going for a day or so.

karmic junco
#

I already got my delivery of 4

#

You meant voltaic right?

misty gorge
#

Ah so there will be battery back for it.

karmic junco
#

I'm in no shortage of backup power

misty gorge
#

Voltaic Enclosures is different than what I'm talking about.

karmic junco
#

Oh then I have. No idea what your taking about

#

Talking.

#

Let me Google thwt

misty gorge
#

Voltaic Systems V50 Always On External Battery Pack with Dual USB Ports - 12,800mAh https://a.co/d/gVKZH21

karmic junco
#

Oh one of these.

misty gorge
#

After these deplete they will turn off, but will turn back on automatically as soon as there is input power again.

karmic junco
#

I have a bunch of single cell 18650 chargers that have that capability.

misty gorge
#

Ah okay.

karmic junco
#

There's like low power draw on these so I don't need that much

misty gorge
#

Either way, excited to see more nodes in NYC.

karmic junco
#

But the idea was since I'm keeping my other devices already powered (router/nas/Poe hub) it wasn't a huge deal to just plug this sucker in.

#

An extra little parasitic 50ma ain't gonna make a difference

#

Your a licensed ham too if I recall?

#

So I had these larger helium antennas

#

And I got 1 foot pigtails.

misty gorge
#

Yup.. I'm a licensed ham also.

karmic junco
#

So that instead of mounting the whole unit outside... Only the antenna is outside

#

I just found a deal (but wrong connector)

#

Id need a small sma to rpsma

#

But look at the price!

#

Basically a dollar a foot

misty gorge
#

can't really lose at that price

#

a good adpater shouldn't be an issue.

#

14th floor is the top floor?

karmic junco
#

The other factor was I really wanted a private mqqt

#

Top floor apt water facing.

#

No obstruction.

misty gorge
#

niiiice

#

should be a really nice footprint.

karmic junco
#

Was going to zip tie the antenna to the child window guard

#

And just run the unit inside

#

Coverage mape indicates possible coverage into Astoria and all of lic

misty gorge
#

if the window guard can hold a child in.. it can hold an antenna up.. hehe

karmic junco
#

The other apt which agreed was in midtown.. slight obstruction to water but could provide midtownish coverage.

#

Like maybe 40th to 90th.

#

(another higher up apt)

misty gorge
# karmic junco Like maybe 40th to 90th.

My work is in the 40s.. I was considering speaking to the IT guys at work to see if they would let me put a unit in one of our conference rooms that over looks times square.

#

I was thinking of talking it up with them and seeing if they would get in to it.. and we just plant a little box somewhere. ๐Ÿ™‚

karmic junco
#

Lol, so the guys to actually speak to is building maintenance and the HVAC guys

misty gorge
#

Oh man.. I wish..

karmic junco
#

Sell it as a water tower door monitoring.

misty gorge
#

I work in one of the tall buildings in times square

karmic junco
#

If anyone tempers with it

misty gorge
#

It would be a dream to get something on the roof.. haha

karmic junco
#

Tampers

misty gorge
#

but yea, I doubt that's happening. haha

karmic junco
#

Hahaha

#

Oh yes. I do know what you mean.

misty gorge
#

Probably more realistic to get repeater owners on board.

karmic junco
#

If you think that's easier... I don't know what coolaid you been drinking!

#

There's a few towers.. so Brooklyn tech has a big tower

misty gorge
#

I think it's an easier lift than making frieds with a maintenance guy that would let me on the roof of one of the tallest buildings in mid town for me to place a box.

#

hahhaa

misty gorge
karmic junco
misty gorge
karmic junco
#

Ohh ! So you could possibly convince them! Lol

misty gorge
#

Not that I have any connection with them anymore.

#

Yea right.. haha

#

I'm not even sure they have a ham radio club anymore.

#

last I heard, it was only weather equiment up there.

karmic junco
#

Look for the trustees

misty gorge
#

I'll bet it's a PITA to get something up on the tower. Probably have to pay a professional.

#

Not sure how much that costs.

#

firmware is never gonna get updated.

#

but I love the idea of it.

#

I think it's the highest point in brooklyn.

karmic junco
#

I think the old tech call sign is still being held

#

Well so the firmware bit

#

As long as the antenna wire comes down

#

There was also a previous discussion about using raspberry pi hooked up via USB permanently.

karmic junco
#

That.. was the idea

misty gorge
#

that's a good idea.

karmic junco
#

The lowest power version would probably be the pi zero

misty gorge
#

put it all in the same box.

karmic junco
#

Not guaranteed for a good wifi connection... But.. possible.

misty gorge
#
#

I'm gonna read through this now.

#

hehe

karmic junco
#

I would love to g er t it functional

misty gorge
#

Good news.

#

they have someone that is available to climb the tower.

#

Hahahhaa

#

Psssh.. concerns about radio waves hurting the children.. umbrella effect.

#

worry about the people 1 mile away.. haha

karmic junco
#

Hahhsahs

#

It ain't the antenna hurting the kids at tech

misty gorge
#

and today.. people have cell tower panels blasting at them all the time.

misty gorge
karmic junco
#

I don't know how long ago you went

#

But tech used to be really good

misty gorge
#

I went in the 90s.. I don't think it it was good then.

#

haha

karmic junco
#

Hahaha

#

No it was good in the 50-early 80s

misty gorge
#

When I went. it was just a very over populated school with a name.

karmic junco
#

Yep. It's where you went when you didn't get into bx or stuy

misty gorge
#

I missed bronx by like 4 points or something.

karmic junco
#

Or hunter.

#

But don't sleep on si tech

#

Those kids are good

#

I was so amazed at what they are doing nowadays

misty gorge
#

It's all about the teachers and who runs the place.

#

and school politices at the time.

#

There is no arguing that for most kids.. having more personal attention from a teacher is better.

#

We can go on about that for quite a while. But yea.. I don't think we are getting a node up there. hehe

karmic junco
#

Lol. Doh

#

Actually I will tell you that it's kinda mixed in that regard.

#

I got virtually no teacher time in hs

#

And I went to stuy. Lol

#

The motivational factors was literally the other students.

#

They pushed the shit outta me.

#

Like I barely squeaked in and barely squeaked out

misty gorge
#

But a culture was created around you. That's what I mean.

karmic junco
#

But it really was the other kids.. just being with them and seeing how damn smart and hard working, and nobody slacked

#

Oh yes. Absolutely.

misty gorge
#

that culture needs to be created. I know tech didn't have that.

karmic junco
#

That culture is at si tech

misty gorge
#

I think it was up to the staff to create that. It didn't happen. I think part of the problem was tech is really big.

karmic junco
#

I went to one of the robotics competition at Jacob javits to watch stuy compete. No parents, all immigrants.

#

Tech is a monstrosity. Way too many students

#

Like 1800 student per grade?

misty gorge
#

I don't know the numbers.. but it was way more than bronx or stuy.

#

It was 7 floors and like 2 blocks by 2 blocks.

karmic junco
#

Ya. I don't know. A lot of folks that I knew in brooklyn tech didn't get a lot of push

misty gorge
#

yea. it wasn't part of the culture.

karmic junco
#

Like my first choice exposure to unix was in hs

#

Like man, the social pressure was hard.

#

You know like social pressures to do bad things?

#

It was like social pressures to learn Linux...

#

You learn C or you suck and your such a looser!!!

#

"oh that test was so easy
..."

#

"what do you mean only 1 AP class... I've got 4... And westing house!

#

Ok ok. I digress back to meahtastic

#

So meahtastic is kinda worthless without the help of repeaters or other nodes

#

Max power isn't high enough or allowed to get further.

#

I recall you wanted kinda shtf coms for you and your gf... Right?

#

But I do there there is some value.. because it's legalized encryption.

#

It's ability to send messages when your not able to respond is important.

#

So like a standard radio, you have to be listening and within receiving range.

misty gorge
#

right, need lots of nodes walking around, or some repeaters/nodes in some really good locations.

karmic junco
#

Right. And there's no guarantee of repeaters being operational.

misty gorge
#

Which is why an organized effort would be nice.

karmic junco
#

And they all have to have the public channel enabled

misty gorge
#

some sites with good backup power or with solar and backup. The equipment is small and low maint.

#

I do think "we can't have nice things" sometimes though. If we do get a successful mesh out there and it gets publicity

karmic junco
#

So. With that in mind... Have you looked at helium?

misty gorge
#

You'll get some a hole out there that will try to jam it etc.

karmic junco
#

Well jamming is just part of that utilizatoom figure

#

All Lora messages are received.

misty gorge
karmic junco
#

Helium/TTN and private lorawan networks

#

They all the same tech

#

And the packets are received by everyone.

#

That includes meshtasric

misty gorge
karmic junco
#

Well they won't be able to

#

On meahtastic.

#

There is a message timing I believe.

misty gorge
#

oh really. I hope that's the case.

karmic junco
#

Though it will still flood the airwaves

#

And that will have an effect on everything.

misty gorge
#

My ideal would be having a few good nodes up with good converage that are low maint and just have it kinda live and be available.

karmic junco
#

Hence... Private don't seem so bad sometimes.

#

Helium miners are basically mqqt base stations.

#

They listen and route broadcasts

misty gorge
#

Not against private channel stuff. but gotta get nodes up.

karmic junco
#

Shit is useless in grid down though.

misty gorge
#

solar nodes with good converge would be kinda nice in "grid down" if it's not a disaster type thing. You and some friends can still text.. your phones won't be useless. okay for a day or two.

#

But if some shit is going down.. I'm getting the F outta the city.

karmic junco
#

Philosophies differ. I find it more useful in the wild than grid down.

#

Think, if you got out

#

And now your sepersted

#

Sperated

#

And I'll give you a good example; there's a nuclear power plant north of you

misty gorge
#

yeah my gf and I camp or rent houses in the boonies a lot and do outdoor stuff. that was one of the applications I was considering too.

karmic junco
#

Standard procedures in a meltdown is everyone north of the tapenzee go north. Everyone else goes south

misty gorge
#

which is why I got the G2s.. very solid units with no stupid quirks like the techo.

karmic junco
#

Ya.. I still need to get thoee

misty gorge
#

techo's are stupid when the G2 ultras are in the picture.

karmic junco
#

But I'm still in process of building a portable comm box

#

Eh.. t echos are cute. Lol

misty gorge
#

cute.. that's it.. I wouldn't even give them to friends to use, because the buttons are so sensitive, yet non responsive at the same time.

misty gorge
karmic junco
#

That's the smaller of the collection.

misty gorge
#

have you watched The Tech Prepper on youtube?

karmic junco
#

Those 20ah goes into the porta box to power the tyt9800

karmic junco
misty gorge
#

He's all in to building man packs and emegency comms systems.. off grid stuff.

karmic junco
#

But I haven't built the charging stuff

#

And the antenna system.

misty gorge
#

gotta be solar right?

karmic junco
#

No actually. Option for solar, but primarily charged from 12v is my desire

misty gorge
#

like a generator or car?

karmic junco
#

Because the box will be larger... It's portable but it is really to be powered by a vehcile

misty gorge
#

ah got it.

#

much faster too.

karmic junco
#

Yes. The idea is that all the antennas have magnetic bases with about 5 ft leads

misty gorge
#

this is when something like a tahoe or suburban would be great.

karmic junco
#

The internal battery covered the high watts draw from keyijg the mic

#

Cause the standard cigarette lighter tends to pop

misty gorge
#

You can always wire right to the battery

karmic junco
#

But then.. it's only in 1 car

misty gorge
#

I think they make boxes that will cut the battery power when ignition power is turned off.

karmic junco
#

If you have a broken down vehicle, it's easier to get another vehicle than another comm box

misty gorge
#

yea true.

karmic junco
#

Like you can rent a car. You can't rent a comm box. Lol

misty gorge
#

a jackery or ecoflow would do what you want also.

#

just a big pre made battery that will charge via 12v also.

karmic junco
#

I have those. Not self contained.

misty gorge
#

ohhh you want the batteries IN the radio box.

#

got it.

karmic junco
#

That's what those 20a lfp packs are for

#

Yes.

#

Because. ...

#

Sometimes you have to climb a mountain for the high peaks for antenna performance.

misty gorge
#

true

karmic junco
#

Say you and your gf really get sepersted

#

And no commercial com ecists

#

Exists

misty gorge
#

I'd climb the brooklyn tech tower with a comms box.

karmic junco
#

And you want to desperately get a message from or to her.

#

Yep. Climb the tower. Deploy the antennas and the cigs roll solar

misty gorge
#

how much will your box weigh?

karmic junco
#

20ah on a nrf at 12v will give you MONTHS of meshtasric

#

Maybe even 6 months

#

And that's without solar.

#

For the total system with antenna array is look around 20 lbs

#

The box is heavy. Lol

misty gorge
#

20 is probably the limit in my head.

#

decently heavy already.. but not prohibitively heavy.

karmic junco
#

Primary is car...

misty gorge
#

yea.

karmic junco
#

So the other blue batteries you see are ltos

#

Keith's calculations on rak boards says 2ah lto will give about 11 days

#

2*2. So 4ah

#

Those blue ones are 20ah

misty gorge
#

hahhaa

karmic junco
#

So without charging it's capable of about 60 days each.

#

And operable in freezing weather.

misty gorge
#

so when is your base node going up?

karmic junco
#

That is way smaller. About 1 lb

#

Mine is up, but I'm at sea level, so ... Nada.. lol

misty gorge
#

the 14th floor one.

karmic junco
#

So to monitor propagation and rf.. I actually have a helium station.

#

And it tells me how far I'm getting packets to and from.

karmic junco
#

Hopefully in the next month or two would be ideal

misty gorge
#

My node is on channel 20 but primary channel is not longfast. So I guess mine is "public"

#

I think at this point keeping the nodes on 20 would do the most good for the public.

karmic junco
karmic junco
#

This one is an even better deal.

#

Read the review. Lol

misty gorge
#

"it was nice"? haha

#

Yea even better deal and adapater.

karmic junco
#

Tempted to buy 4. Lol

misty gorge
#

Different cable type though?

#

Is 58 okay for 900mhz? May not matter at this length.

karmic junco
#

So the guys review of his bobcat miner.

#

Not related to this random pic

misty gorge
karmic junco
#

The bobcat miner is a helium miner. Which is the same freq as meshtasric. So should ok!

misty gorge
#

Probably fine for this application. But the first one you liked probably uses better cable. Probably explains the price difference.

karmic junco
#

Camel camel camel says it was normally listed at like 14.x

#

The eight wood actually is cheaper

#

Since it's price history

#

It's amazing how much damn cabling you need to build a box

#

To actually locate the box and the antenna where you want.

misty gorge
#

This box will also have a Meshtastic node build in? Why not right?

karmic junco
#

Yep

#

Meshtastic and at least a dual band

#

But the damn quad band antennas are kinda annoying.

#

Will probably throw in a rpi 4 with a 7in display

#

With 20ah of actual usable power it isn't a big deal.

#

You get as much power on that as you would on a 40ah lead acid.

#

Other than that a mppt charge controller, with the ability to take vehicle 12vdc power to charge.

misty gorge
#

I think you already have the TYT and you're not a fan of digital.. but...

#
#

triband, airband receive, digital and encryption capable.

karmic junco
#

Damn. That is kinda nice

#

I have no digital modes

misty gorge
#

the digital handhelds can be had for 100 bucks.

#

dual band ones.. tyt makes great ones!

#

The TYTs take aftermarket firmware which make them really good ham radios, but you lose the encryption.

#

If you keep the stock firmware.. you get a usable mediocre ham radio that acts like a business radio but can do encryption.

#

the anytone handheld which is 400 bucks will act likea pretty good ham radio and have encrytpion.

#

The TYT MD390 Plus is IP67, is like 130 bucks shipped and will do AES256 and talk to that Anytone with digital encryption.

#

I mean.. if you get a business licnese.. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

I have one of these with aftermarket firmware..and I have a few with stock firmware and encryption still enabled for use with my.. business license.... ๐Ÿ˜‰

karmic junco
#

Both good and bad. I got like every family member a gmrs radio already. Lol

#

And backup uv5rs if needed.

carmine yoke
#

Shout out to Mesh1A

misty gorge
#

Right.. so you'd replace that GMRS with a MD390 Plus. ๐Ÿ˜‰

carmine yoke
#

Picked ya up somewhere near grand central

misty gorge
karmic junco
#

Mesh1a is not I.. lol

There are apple stores in pA. Lol.

But I have been to scranton

misty gorge

Wooooo you have not lived till you've seen that. If you think bad parts of NYC are bad.. you'll change you mind after a stroll through Kensington.

carmine yoke
#

Kensington is the east coast skid row

#

Been many times.

karmic junco
#

Here I thought it was a place to eat

carmine yoke
#

Zombie land

karmic junco
#

How's it compared to lakawana?

carmine yoke
#

Less cousin-fucky

misty gorge
#

More walking dead.

karmic junco
#

Oh dear.

carmine yoke
#

Itโ€™s an open air drug market and a pretty massive gentrification scam too

misty gorge

People shooting each other and themselves up in broad daylight.

not 5 or 6.

not 10

not 20

#

like.. 50 to 100? is that right @carmine yoke ?

karmic junco
#

Sounds like a self correcting problem?

Way more these days

karmic junco

Croc was the old nickname

Or flesh.

carmine yoke
karmic junco
#

Oh new stuff?

#

Who wants to go put a node in a crack house?

misty gorge
#

speaking of Phily not necessary having the best cheese steaks... the best pizza is in CT.. not NY.. ๐Ÿ™‚

karmic junco
misty gorge
karmic junco
#

How good is "the best"

misty gorge
#

I guess it really depends what you like.. if your idea of a great pizza is lots and lots of cheese.. and 7 toppings.

#

this aint it.

karmic junco
#

Mind you, I not only mesh, I also make pizza. I have a uni oven in the bsck

misty gorge
#

Oh shit.. just go take a drive to Sallys then.

karmic junco
#

And have made pizza with Lombardi himself

misty gorge
#

Sorry.. Sallys is better than Lombardi

karmic junco
#

I'm a bit of a pizza holic

misty gorge
#

dough, oven, sauce.

karmic junco
#

I don't care if it's good or bad, as long as it's cooked I'll eat it

#

Let me googlish sallys

misty gorge
#

Trust me.. just make a trip to sallys.

misty gorge
#

Their tomato pie is bomb. My friends and I will drive there a few times a year just to have it.

#

thts 75 miles each way and nobody ever ever thinks it wasn't worth the trip.

#

they have a closer location in Stamford now.. but it didn't seem the same as the New Haven location.

#

maybe they were still dialing in that oven.

karmic junco
#

Fascinating.

#

Coal ovens are particularly finiky

#

Long times to adjust the temp

#

Once you get it too hot takes forever to cool it back down

misty gorge
#

the irregular slice shapes.. the thin char crust.. the sauce.. oh man.

karmic junco
#

Get the tomato?

#

Ok, Sally's it is..

misty gorge
#

get both.

#

but the tomato is the star and my favorite.

karmic junco
#

Can't say it's good or bad if ntilni try.

#

I like keste

#

Pauly g was pretty good but then it went w little downhill

misty gorge
#

There is a place in queens called Danni's House of Pizza.

karmic junco
#

I like a high hydration dough

misty gorge
#

their Pesto slice was another pizza which just blew my mind.

karmic junco
#

The dough is usually too soft to toss.

misty gorge
#

Philomenas in queens has a phenominal pepperoni square pizza.

#

I know nothing about how they are made.. I just like eating it. haha

karmic junco
#

High hydration, longer cold fermentation.

#

Hahaha

#

Oh that used to be my stress reducer.

#

Experimenting with dough

#

And my friends coal oven when he closed his shop. Hahaha

misty gorge
#

Please put these on your list.. the last two are in NY so low hanging fruit.. let me know.

#

The philomena's guy is a dough nerd.

karmic junco
#

Kre gstdenssm?

#

Kew gardens?

misty gorge
#

yea.. in queens.

#

its a PITA to get in that place. I recommend sitting at the counter and trying a pesto with sweet sauce slice.

#

very unique to me.

karmic junco
#

Fastinatinf.

misty gorge
#

I don't make pizza, but I've eaten a lot of it and these are all standouts for me.

karmic junco
#

Woah this Philomena guy does dough like mine!

misty gorge
#

Yeah.. he is a total nerd about dough.

#

The thought of the pepperoni square slice makes me so happy.

karmic junco
#

All about the poolish

#

I took my gf(now wife) to king authors flour for a tour

#

She bought me a 50 lb bag of flour.

#

She did not make any pizza yet..

#

I don't think it will happen.

misty gorge
#

all this talk of pizza is making me really hungry

karmic junco
#

Me too. And the pizza at the hospital was the most tasteless dough I've had in years

#

Even though they have this fancy pizza oven

misty gorge
#

Philomenas doesn't even have the square slices pictured on their site landing page.

#

For me that square pepperoni is the best thing there though.

karmic junco
#

Does the squares have the nooks and crannies where the pesto soaks in and dries out a bit?

misty gorge
#

Yes.. so crunchy.

#

They use thick cup pepperoni

#

so much texture and flavor.

karmic junco
#

Ooh. The olive oil crisping up the edges like a fried dough stick....

misty gorge
#

the thickness is somewhere between a grandma and grandpa.

#

but it's so crispy yet fluffy.

karmic junco
#

I had a Detroit pie from emilys

#

First time was mind blowing.

#

Second time was belh

#

Third time was a little better.

misty gorge
#

Nice thing about philomenas is that its consistent.

#

Dave is always there.. and if he's not.. they close.

karmic junco
#

Will have to try

misty gorge
#

Maybe controversial.. but I don't understand why Joe's in Times Square has a freaking line down the block.

#

its just good pizza.. but not great...it's just not bad or shit.

karmic junco
#

Same thing with Bleeker st pizza

misty gorge
karmic junco
#

And grimaldies

misty gorge
#

You know andrew bellucci?

karmic junco
#

Like it's... Decent ok ,but .. man not awesome in any way

#

Can't say I know him

misty gorge
#

look him up

#

interesting story

#

but not a huge fan of his stuff either.. it's just not bad.

#

The slices I listed above are NOT medocire in my opinion.

karmic junco
#

Now Bleeker st pizza is pretty good

#

Better than two boots

misty gorge
#

soooo.. years ago.. I liked two boots.

karmic junco
#

Ya. Like circus 2011

misty gorge
#

LIke.. it was good pizza.. I'm talking

karmic junco
#

Circa

misty gorge
#

yea!

#

exactly!

karmic junco
#

Lol

misty gorge
#

There are just better choices now.

#

I'm talking 2003

#

not even 2011

karmic junco
#

They used to be like cravable good

#

Now it's an after school slice

misty gorge
#

You ever have an Artichoke's Pizza?

karmic junco
#

Yes.

misty gorge
#

opinion?

karmic junco
#

Had it maybe a month or so ago

#

It's above average (there regular size)

#

Slice

#

But not spectacular

misty gorge
#

some of there slices are just too much

#

in all depts for me.

karmic junco
#

The artichoke one is about the same as I remember it. Way too heavy for being sover

#

Sober

misty gorge
#

I know it's a heavy lift driving 75 miles or more.. but.. I'd recommend you do it now when the weather is colder so sallys is easier to get in to.

karmic junco
#

Ahh

#

Schelp the offspring on a road trip.

misty gorge
#

Yale is there.....

#

there are some good ice cream shops in the area

#

Luis' Lunch is there.. they claim to have invented the hamburger

karmic junco
#

Blah. Yale. Yale is for losers.. emotional damage

misty gorge
karmic junco
#

Sorry. Lol.

misty gorge
#

If you're curious about the "original burger"..

#

I'd say.. go in there and look around.. order one and share it.

#

save your stomach for the pizza.

#

There are other great pizza places in New Haven.

karmic junco
#

Birthplace. Ooh. Edible history

misty gorge
#

tried them all buy sallys is the best in my opinion.

karmic junco
#

Damn you are a wealth of food knowledge

misty gorge
#

People say Frank Pepe has a better clam slice.. my friends think so.. but I like sally's clam better.

#

Fank Pepe is still good.. so if you wanted make the most of it.

karmic junco
#

I did clam slices at Lombardi's.

misty gorge
#

Hit Fank Pepe for a clam slice..

#

then hit Sallys for the tomato slice.

karmic junco
#

I went back to being a purist.

#

Margarita or bust

misty gorge
#

these are gonna be a little different.

#

the new haven style crust is a bit of a different beast.

karmic junco
#

But for science I will try

misty gorge
#

In the last 3 years, my friends and I have made the drive to sallys at least 3 times a year.

karmic junco
#

Damn !

misty gorge
#

It's no joke.. and it's not just me.

karmic junco
#

Oh btw do you do DMr?

misty gorge
#

I own many DMR radios.

karmic junco
#

Here I am being an analog purist. Lol

misty gorge
#

do not talk on them much.. haha I have a hotspot and I listen to the worldwide brandmeister talk group sometimes.

karmic junco
#

Ahh.

misty gorge
#

if I lived somewhere else, I'd be that HF guy.

karmic junco
#

Most things are going digital

misty gorge
#

it's a better use of bandwidth.

#

sounds like shit though.

karmic junco
#

I hate the sound of digital

#

Sounds like your talking into a metal can of cofffee

misty gorge
#

People say digital sounds good.. but I can 100% tell something is digital just by listening to it come out of a radio.

karmic junco
#

With the coffee still in it

misty gorge
#

walk through airports and such and hear the digital radios and think to myself.. geez it sounds like shit.. must be digital.

karmic junco
#

Efficiency only matters when you have a deficiency. Lol

#

We have no shortage of bandwidth for amature use

misty gorge
#

being able to text.. selective calling and messaging is ice.

karmic junco
#

Cause nobody's using it

misty gorge
#

nice

#

encryption is nice.

karmic junco
#

That's the key. Encryption

misty gorge
#

I mean.. not that I do it..

#

If there was a nice remote face mount DMR dual band mobile, I would own it and be super happy.

#

I have an ICOM 2730 in the car. nice radio.. except not DMR.

#

there will probably never be an ICOM or Yaesu DMR.

#

alinco sells rebadged DMR radios.

karmic junco
#

Doest yaesu have another mode

misty gorge
#

System Fusion.

#

Icom has their own also.

karmic junco
#

Gah too many stsndsrds

#

Becomes near worthless when shit goes bsd

misty gorge
#

I stick with DMR because it's brand agnostic. You can get DMR radios for cheap or they can be really expensive, but they can all talk to each other

minor inlet
#

I've just set up a powered repeater node near the WTC last week. On the 30th floor, facing the Hudson. Hopefully, this will extend coverage to the New Jersey area, spanning from Lower Manhattan to Newark and the surrounding areas.

#

I was able to pick it up from Newark, which is quite impressive, considering it has a basic Gizont antenna.

misty gorge
minor inlet
#

No, it's installed indoors near a large window facing NJ. I plan to upgrade to a RAK with a 6dBi gain fiberglass antenna soon (hopefully, my office manager won't mind ๐Ÿ˜€ ).

misty gorge
#

Slap a battery on it? ๐Ÿ™‚

minor inlet
#

I don't think it's necessary, because it's plugged into a UPS protected outlet. I may slap the 18650 on it just in case later, but for now, it should handle power outages no problem

misty gorge
#

should be fine if it's a UPS outlet.

karmic junco
#

If the building has been remodeled in the last 10 years there's a good possibility of low e glass; I know it's particularly difficult for 4g and for wifi to pass through, so I'm not 100 percent certain about the 900mhz range

#

Still say we need to find someone to climb that tech antenna

karmic junco
#

3 grand buys a lot of meshtastic

#

and NYC is ripe with public housing buildings which are higher than most surrounding buildings

misty gorge
#

My node is seeing a new node that is broadcasting it's location around Lexington and 90th Street. Doesn't seem like the connection is super reliable but the node has been popping up and updating consistently on my end here in Astoria.

karmic junco
#

nope. Cant say that was me

misty gorge
#

It's nice to see a consistent node out there.

karmic junco
#

thats very much true

#

enjoying the snow?

misty gorge
#

Meh.. it will be slush soon.

misty gorge
#

Not sure if my solar panel is covered in snow right now, but my battery still charged in this weather.

karmic junco
#

Is your panel inside or outside your window?

#

I got 0 generation on my external PV's yesterday and today(still covered with snow)

twin root
#

So who runs the Hudson yards gateway?

#

Im considering ignoring it because it's MQTT and is flooding my node with random stations 1000mi away

misty gorge
misty gorge
twin root
#

Im mobile, I hit it while I was commuting via ferry on the Hudson River

#

I'm near Macy's on 34th now

#

I can try and DM the node and ask them to check this discord

misty gorge
#

You can sure try, but its lkely not "manned"

twin root
#

Tru, maybe they will see it eventually

misty gorge
#

So what is it doing? Is it just showing you lots of nodes from far away in your node list?

#

I'd like to know what to look for in the future if I go near that node again.

twin root
#

Yeah it's on the default long fast on MQTT

#

So it's flooding my node with random noded thousands of miles away

#

If someone gets between your nodes and that node, and successfully routes traffic you're going to end up with dozens of random stations

misty gorge
#

Do you get their longfast messages too?

twin root
#

I really don't like MQTT for this, there is a way to only unidirectionally report

twin root
#

MQTT is cringe, there is a setting so you only report up your location to the default to populate the map, which is the right use case for MQTT

misty gorge
# twin root Yeah

That's kinda cool! When I saw the node, I didn't get any random longfast messages.

#

My nodes have longfast as a secondary channel though.. But I would expect to still get the MQTT messages from HY?

twin root
#

Yes you would

misty gorge
#

Maybe the owner flipped a switch at some point recently?

#

Or just no activity when I was near it.

twin root
#

It doesn't matter if it's primary or secondary, if you're on the same LORA channel you're going to route messages regardless. If you have the same channel programmed parentheses in channel programmed you will decode the messages and stations

twin root
#

Getting shit like this

misty gorge
#

It would be interesting to get in contact with who that is.

misty gorge
#

someone's doing a NodeDB reset...... hehe

twin root
#

Yeah, I am trying to trace route these nodes but am not getting a response

#

So trying to make sure it's that node that's misbehaving

misty gorge
#

You're still able to "request position" the HY node from where you are now?

twin root
#

Yes

#

I am connected to it directly

#

Not consistent

misty gorge
#

Hopefully they see that. I would imagine if that was an unmanned node, you'd see their "everyday" node on that list also if they are in range of HY

#

One of those nodes on your list could be the actual node that person is connected to.

karmic junco
#

whats the channel utilization look like over there?

#

this is the overall problem with MQTTT

#

there's not a whole lot of ryme and reason on the public channel

#

like discord with no ability to filter into groups

#

I actually wouldn't mind doing a NYC MQTT setup if anyone was interested

misty gorge
#

You need a ESP32 node for that?

karmic junco
#

yes

#

well no

#

maybe? I think no

#

you need esp32 for store and forward

misty gorge
#

Cuz the device needs to connect to the Internet right? Wifi?

karmic junco
#

Wifi to internet

#

so certain models of rak baseboard will not work

misty gorge
#

I think most of the nrf devices don't have wifi

karmic junco
#

I did it with the lora32 lilygo

#

cheapest option

#

well, other than the heltec

misty gorge
#

I have some heltec devices.

karmic junco
#

but I've never used the heltec

misty gorge
#

What would happen if I ran a heltec node with Internet in my apt but kept the RAK node on my roof up as it is?

karmic junco
#

the rak node (Im assuming you are close enough to it that you can still use bluetooth?)

misty gorge
#

no.. I can't BT my rak node

karmic junco
#

In theory, depending on how the message was received, will either be sent from the heltec to MQTT or from the RAK to the Heltec to MQTT

misty gorge
#

I can see the status of it via my G2 or with my computer using the admin channel.

karmic junco
#

Ok, what is your rak on the roof doing?

misty gorge
#

It's just sitting on the roof for any rando to use and for me to get out better with my G2

karmic junco
#

hahaha

#

If the rak is still conencted to the same mesh as the heltec on MQTT, it will send the message it onward

misty gorge
#

interesting.

#

I ordered one of those bender cases for my heltec.

karmic junco
#

the heltec will receive messages on MQTT and foward it onto the rak

misty gorge
#

maybe I'll play with the heltec when I get the case in.

karmic junco
#

Im still caseless

#

I've had no time to do anything. lol

misty gorge
#

The bender case is nice. a little pricey

karmic junco
#

I literally opened the boxes for my echo's and raks last week

#

and I've had them for 2 months

#

I've got more projects than I do time and caffeine

misty gorge
#

yea.. it's a commitment

#

When my node wasn't working right, it consumed me for a week.

twin root
#

I just disabled MQTT on my node so I won't pick up any more MQTT stuff

#

I'll see what it looks like now

karmic junco
#

You had Mqtt on a mobile node?

#

I had previously considered this being an interesting "bridge" method

ornate lance
twin root
karmic junco
#

Brookfield I hit as well

#

I was fairly certain they were in Brooklyn

#

By the navy yard...

misty gorge
#

The node I was seeing regularly for a week disappeared

twin root
karmic junco
#

It's weird I hit Brookfield but it never showed up on my phone only on my t-beam screen

twin root
#

Thank you for not being an MQTT node

#

also I was able to get a contact with your node while indoors which is pretty cool

misty gorge
#

This is so cool!

#

I'm going to be putting up a temp node on a friend's roof tonight.

#

We need more nodes up!

twin root
#

! non-mqtt'd nodes with ignore MQTT enabled!

misty gorge
#

I'm further north in queens.. but I hope I can get your node anyway. ๐Ÿ™‚

twin root
#

its a great tool for estimating LOS coverage

#

(not accounting for buildings)

misty gorge
#

Test node is up on my friend's roof. Have a small rubber antenna on it and it's not on a pole. But it allowed me to reach my other friend much further away. I don't see any nodes that don't belong to me though. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

karmic junco
#

Realistically unless there seeing high channel utilization, it probably doesn't matter. It is also extremely useful if you did have a large scale disaster.

misty gorge
#

@minor inlet What's your node setup like? What board/enclosure/antenna/mounting?

minor inlet
misty gorge
#

I saw that pricing error you posted. Looks to be live still. Unfortunately, I can never get AliExpress to validate my account. Oh well.

karmic junco
#

I think that enclosure deal is gone

#

unless I cant find it

#

disregard

#

weird, when I click on the link, it says unavaliable. When I copy and paste it into chrome, it works

#

its 3 dollars each, +9.99 shipping each

#

I mean it does get incrementally cheaper

#

zumble you want a few? lol

misty gorge
#

I probably already have too many Meshtastic nick nacks.

karmic junco
#

if thats your ONLY nicknack you'd be ok

karmic junco
#

@misty gorge do you have a mobile antenna for your car?

karmic junco
# misty gorge https://tenor.com/view/angel-im-an-angel-smile-cute-gif-15616558
misty gorge
#

I think the longer one is a Larsen. But I've only mounted it like twice ever.

karmic junco
#

I am not so commited to run permanent mounts.. lol

#

I know some people drill holes into their roof and such

misty gorge
#

I'm running a NMO hatch mount.

#

the nice thing about a mag mount is you can move it around and play around with the ground plane with the car body.

#

The tram is cheap and pretty low profile.

karmic junco
#

I don't have too much mobility with the top of the car

#

its either got ski's, bikes, fishing poles, etc

#

I use a glass mount

#

like the ol cell phone style

misty gorge
#

I have roof rack on my car all year round also

karmic junco
#

pretty non descript

misty gorge
#

that's why i use the hatch mount.

#

Considered glass, but went with the NMO

#

fishing rods go in my car cuz its a wagon.

karmic junco
misty gorge
karmic junco
#

wow, its more expensive than when I got it though

misty gorge
#

I do have tints though.

karmic junco
#

I paid 30

#

factory wagon tint?

#

if its factory wagon tint its fine,

misty gorge
#

some aftermarket stuff.

#

I don't even know what it is especifically..

karmic junco
#

if its that boogie metallic will probably be worse than ceramic

#

It literally looks like an old cell phone antenna. receiving is pretty good

misty gorge
#

my friend's friend owns a tint shop and he got me the tint for my birthday years ago.. like 7 years. It's starting to fade. so probably not high quality stuff.

karmic junco
#

oh then thats probably fine to do.

#

if anything, you can just cut a square out of it

misty gorge
#

Yea, my hatch tram looks like a old cell phone antenna.. but kids these days don't know what a cell phone antenna is.. haha

karmic junco
#

hahahhahhah

misty gorge
#

If my hatch mount ever dies I would consider the glass mount.

#

I think I'm using a comet hatch mount.

#
#

Are you going to get that anytone?

#

I would snatch it up if it had a nice remote mount face.

#

This is how my icom is perm mounted.

#

mic and mic cord are stored in arm rest out of the way when not in use.

#

when in use, it's attched to the red thing in the pic via magnet.

karmic junco
#

oh thats waht that red thing is

#

Man I can't remember where I saw this interior... subaru? or ford?

#

As far as the anytone, I am not 100% on board

#

Simply because I hate learning a new interface

#

and its like trying to upgrade all consoles to new tech. lol

#

there's enough hatch gap? Im always afriad that the hatch gap won't be large enough

#

I have to check my car

#

now, onto slightly sillier meshtastic thing

#

What about a duplexer for meshtastic?

#

to share the antenna

misty gorge
#

It's a VW.

#

Digital dual band really IS the way to go.

#

there are no downsides to a DMR/Analog radio.

#

The anytone handhelds I have are excellent sounding in speaker output audio and transmit.

#

Learning a new device sucks though.

karmic junco
#

ooh.. vw... TDI!?

misty gorge
#

I used to own a TDI

#

then they gave me a boatload of money for it.

#

so I bought a Golf Alltrack with it.

karmic junco
#

ahh.

#

I almost bought the golf TDI wagon 6mt back in the day

misty gorge
#

I loved my TDI

#

from maine down to NYC with one tank.

#

haha

karmic junco
#

but the narrow trunk and low cargo weight capacity killed it for me

misty gorge
#

My car isn't even rated for towing in the US

#

though it is in europe. I dono.

karmic junco
#

Ya, weight police over here.

#

I seem them tow scamper sized units in europe

misty gorge
#

yea.. I think they make a euro hide away tow hook for my car too

karmic junco
#

roughly 1500-1800LBS

misty gorge
#

I'm sure my car can tow 1800 lbs.

karmic junco
#

I think they were rated to 3000lbs without issues

#

in europe

misty gorge
#

I remember filling up after hurricane sandy when gas stations were all out of gas.

#

Was really nice. haha

#

Just rolled in and pumped the diesel. haha

karmic junco
#

hahhahah

#

They certainly had some silly rules

#

I saw the lines for gas

#

but nobody on lines for the jerry can line

#

so I brought 6 jerry cans and filled up

misty gorge
#

But there were certainly times when I pushed the range too far and got nervous about findind a diesel station.

karmic junco
#

went back to the car, filled it, went backt o the line.. lol

#

think about how EV owners feel

misty gorge
#

EV and NYC.. nah....

karmic junco
#

I've seen more EV's being towed on 87

#

not NYC per se

#

their distances are too shart

#

even long island is too short

misty gorge
#

I mean charging.

#

so many apt dwellers.

karmic junco
#

yep

misty gorge
#

I don't even know how you fix that.

#

All public parking spots will need charging stations

#

all rental parking spaces will need chargers.

#

What/where do you fish?

karmic junco
#

I just got rid of my old jeep so no longer to jones beach

#

used to get the 4wd beach pass

#

you can still get one of those if you want

#

If you do surf fishing

#

(if you don't have one already)

karmic junco
#

all the lakes in queens have too many dang turtles

misty gorge
#

I never got the beach pass, but I would hike out from the normal beach parking areas.

#

Used to fish for large mouth a lot in al the bodies of water in nyc

#

i ice fish also

misty gorge
#

amazing fight on very light/ultra light tackle. LIke 2-3 lb line stuff

karmic junco
#

wow.. ice fishing I never did

misty gorge
#

It's a pretty cool experience. being on a frozen lake and just drilling holes.

#

the key is using a fish finder in your hole. Super cool to see a fish come up for your bait.

#

Haven't been ice fishing the last two seasons cuz of the warm winters.

twin root
#

Who's nodes? Hit em on my way to 33rd

#

From the Hudson

#

Also it looks like that cringe Hudson yards MQTT node is no more

misty gorge
#

Not me. I have a friend with one of my nodes in the Harlem area right now.

#

He says he doesn't see any new nodes though

misty gorge
#

This guy just popped up.

#

Can't contact it again. Must have been passing by

karmic junco
#

neither was me- mine was in downtown bklyn yesterday

misty gorge
#

I may have a second node going up Sunday or Monday.

twin root
#

1.74 miles as the crow flies

#

not too bad!

misty gorge
#

Looks pretty unobstructed. What was the signal strength like?

misty gorge
#

I got a new node up tonight which allowed me to reliably reach a friend South of me.

minor inlet
#

Great! I managed to connect to my node (using my Lilligo Echo with Gizont antenna) from the Newark area once. The signal was pretty bad, but after several re-tries, my message went through.

karmic junco
#

Great news

twin root
#

My buddy has Direct LoS VERY high up far past the southern tip of Manhattan all the way to BK/Staten Island so may be a great bridge

karmic junco
#

You all just running the default as the primary, and custom secondary?

misty gorge
#

I'm a bad citizen and running longfast as secondary

#

I think that means my direct messages are encrypted with my private key? Is that how it works?

#

same

misty gorge
#

I assumed trace route only works with devices on the primary channel

#

But I got a traceroute reply form a node that was not part of my mesh.

twin root
misty gorge
#

How does private message work? Which key does it use?

#

can I private message someone who has LongFast as their primary if LongFast is not my primary?

misty gorge
#

I struggled with that also. Right now I like getting all the telemetry information from my nodes because I'm still trying to get used to everything. I think at some point I may remove the private channel.

#

Maybe I'll turn off the GPS info and remove the private primary channel.

twin root
#

this is the right way to do it ๐Ÿ‘ same here

#

And I put my "desktop" non-router nodes in client_mute as to not trash the mesh with extra garbage

karmic junco
#

I'll have to look deeper into the configuration

#

I honestly didn't look that closely

twin root
#

Another wild hit on @minor inlet

#

on top of the palisade while driving, got a solid hit

#

If we could get you one of the G2 Base Stations @ 1 watt and a 6dbi fiberglass you could hit everything

#

probably out to bayonne and staten island

twin root
#

Mike I think I just hit you directly

twin root
#

Or did you rename your node?

twin root
#

Its possible I just didn't get node info but I did a travroute and it didn't come back

#

I'll try again in my commute home to hit your Brookfield node

twin root
#

@minor inlet I got your ping

#

I can't figure out what direction your in so unsure what window to go to

karmic junco
#

through glass too

cerulean thorn
#

Hi. I live in Bay Ridge down by the bridge. I operate a node here. Cheers.

twin root
#

Thats great! Are you hitting any nodes?

@karmic junco Were you on 2M Simplex yesterday? While driving home I heard someone on 520 talking about building a battery powered radio box. haha.

cerulean thorn
#

unfortunately no, i need to get a better antenna and experiment some more

#

I'm also a ham ๐Ÿ™‚

#

I've got a TH-D74A and a xiegu x5105

misty gorge
#

I really should work on getting my general license.

cerulean thorn
# misty gorge Height is might!

absolutely agree! I have line of sight to the verrazzano on/off ramp, i always keep expecting to hear more nodes but I'm just gonna keep it running

#

and probably get a few more gadgets

misty gorge
#

I put up nodes to get connected with a few friends who live in my area (astoria).

#

I do pick up other nodes every once in a while that show up, but no real activity.

#

I was on a plane down to mexico this past weekend and picked up quite a few nodes shortly after take off. hehe.. They are out there.

cerulean thorn
#

do you use longfast?

misty gorge
#

My nodes are set to longfast as secondary.

#

It would be great if you could set DMs to go over a specific "channel". If that were the case, I think I would switch my nodes to LongFast primary.

Iโ€™m 13B4 a node always moving as I drive in for work several times a week.

Was trying to use the app and drop waypoints for each hit I got as it seemed to draw a nice little map, but it just crashed the app after 10 pins.

Started just dropping a pin using a basic app and itโ€™s really turned into something over the last week or so.

#

Apologies if โ€œJacko has shared their position with you.โ€ Several dozen times, but what I do when Iโ€™m moving is in channel zero, I press the pin over the message bar and it sends out location and times out after 30 seconds or so. If it doesnโ€™t time out and acknowledges, I drop a pin on the map and send another location. I keep dropping pins and sending subsequent locations until it eventually times out.

On a subsequent day, Iโ€™ll go a different route and try to see if i can get the same acknowledgment elsewhere.

I like this a little better than the mesh map because itโ€™s a little more private. Let me know what you think. If you want to DM me a location where you know Iโ€™ll get a hit, Iโ€™ll give it a shot and continue to update the map accordingly.

I have to build my solar nodes before it gets too hot. Then I'm not going on the roof

twin root
#

I hit this from 21km away

#

Anyone know anything about this node in Staten Island?

karmic junco

#

I got the rak enclosures from alibaba too

#

Just got to put together the rak, flash it, install the kit from keithmon, test it, then go up on the roof

#

so ya.. maybe when ski season is over. lol

cerulean thorn
# twin root

I canโ€™t pick it up with my heltec v3 from bay ridge. My antenna is crummy though

twin root
cerulean thorn
#

That is exciting! I hope to be able to set up something with some oomph soon. Still figuring this all out. Itโ€™s fun!

#

I got a t-echo on order

karmic junco
#

I need to reconfigure a tad

#

Move the default to 2

cerulean thorn
misty gorge
#

There is no room for a USB cable or even a right angle adapter with the board and plate mounted inside the enclosure

#

The plus is a flat lipo fits really nicely behind the plate between the plate and the enclosure. I can fit a 5000mah battery behind there.

#

But I'm going to have to use a 18650 holder cuz I can't plug a USB in for charging!

cerulean thorn
#

can anyone provide a parts list for a RAK node please? I'd like to get some hardware set up but I'm new to this and would like to set up a solid node while I continue to learn more about hardware differences. seems like the options are growing monthly

#

I got a little unit from etsy for mobile use...

#

I'm excited to help build out the network around here

misty gorge
#

Are you looking to put up a solar node outside?

cerulean thorn
#

yes

#

at least one, maybe a few, and I want to zip tie something to my fire escape with a mag-mount antenna ๐Ÿ˜„

misty gorge
#

I can throw up my list tomorrow. I put up one node with a external mounted solar panel, and one node with a solar panel mounted on the enclosure.

#

soshine panels on both

#

I'm using flat lipo batteries on both. One is 6000mah and the other is 10000mah

#

Some guys are getting fancy with the battery charging setups, but I decided to try the simple setup with just the RAK board and both nodes are running fine.

#

Not sure how the lipo batteries will do in the summer, but they lasted through some of the 20F days we had here in NYC.

misty gorge
#
#

That should get you started.

#

You'll need to change reverse the power connector pins of the battery if you get that one.

#

If you want low profile, you'd probably go with the best SMA antenna you can find. You'd install a N connector if you want to use larger antennas.

I'm bringing a T-echo to NYC this weekend with the name "CLVR" and longname "You found a four-leaf clover :)"

misty gorge

Had a ping from a "WILL" with a message "Central Park" today.

celest furnace
#

Nice. CLVR will be in prospect park on Saturday afternoon for a while for sure. Queens in the evening.

cerulean thorn
#

Iโ€™m gonna put one up in one of those trees

misty gorge
#

Mounting it may be tricky

#

I'm using this for both my nodes. They screw right in to the back of the box I linked.

#

Really big hose clamps. I cut mine down to proper size before mounting. But the large clamps give you options.

misty gorge
#

Got you from the FDR here in Astoria, @wise crater

cerulean thorn
#

my portable node is named BKD - BrooklynDude

#

ill be down along shore road park today on the narrows; i regularly pick up staten island and that brookfield place repeater

misty gorge
#

I have one on my other units but I don't think it will fit this one.

#

Too late, went with a 18650 so I can swap battery or charge externally

#

this node isn't going up on any roofs so lots of battery power won't be an issue. This is going to be my temp/mobile repeater/router.

karmic junco
#

I havent' opened up my boxes yet.

#

lol. I have no idea. It was the 3 dollar rak cases

misty gorge
#

If it's the same stuff I got, it's a really nice case for 3 bucks!

#

Hahha

#

It uses 6 screws in the back which are difficult to insert though

#

It's really not a box you want to open and close a lot. I think I prefer the outdoor electrical boxes with the latches for easy access.

#

My cases came with two holes. One seems to be for an external power source. Taped it from the inside and then sealed the hole with silicone from the outside.

karmic junco
#

No solar...it was the Ali express one

misty gorge
#

The solar case is real nice though.

#

If your non solar case is anything like my solar, it's worth the 3 bucks for sure.

cerulean thorn
#

sick!

#

this is a fun new addiction hehe

#

and the best part IMO is it's at least somewhat social!

#

I love how it is accessible to non-licensed users as well. it's a great gateway

loud blade
#

awesome. your repeater is super useful. i was just using it to message someone 17 miles away today

karmic junco
#

are you making brookfield as a full repeater? Or just as a default channel

twin root
twin root
karmic junco
#

Im torn on that ever so slightly

#

Part of me says, what difference does it make... if its default, everyone has it already anyhow.

#

mike, curious, what do you see as the ch utilization?

twin root
# karmic junco Im torn on that ever so slightly

I managed/was involved in using a very large field deployment of meshtastic and router nodes where our downfall, it really messes with the routing and creates unecessarily high channel utilization

karmic junco
#

would you just do default and direct message? Is that still secure?

twin root
#

we are talking about 2 different things

#

what your talkign about does not pertain to the node role setting

karmic junco
#

Maybe I am confusing the issue, in the node role settting, when its on repeater, it would repeat all messages

#

regardless of encryption

twin root
#

no, every node repeats all messages regardless of encryption if on the same lora channel
