I believe the NRF devices can be updated with a phone and cable pretty easily. Not as easy as wireless, but better than lugging a laptop.
It would be cool to get some amateur radio clubs interested in this so they can just throw a node up at one of their sites.
I'd be down to donate some money or hardware to get a few nodes up in good locations too.

You just need the device to resend packets. If there are any major changes, you'll obviously need to update. But maybe you don't need to update on every release.

I started with the t beams as it was the most out of the box solution available (other than the echos)
And someone on here said echos had issues. I think the issues are mostly resolved.
The lora32 were cheaper, and I wanted them for powered installations.

The TYTs take aftermarket firmware which make them really good ham radios, but you lose the encryption.
If you keep the stock firmware.. you get a usable mediocre ham radio that acts like a business radio but can do encryption.
the anytone handheld which is 400 bucks will act likea pretty good ham radio and have encrytpion.
The TYT MD390 Plus is IP67, is like 130 bucks shipped and will do AES256 and talk to that Anytone with digital encryption.
I mean.. if you get a business licnese.. 😉 😉

If the building has been remodeled in the last 10 years there's a good possibility of low e glass; I know it's particularly difficult for 4g and for wifi to pass through, so I'm not 100 percent certain about the 900mhz range

It doesn't matter if it's primary or secondary, if you're on the same LORA channel you're going to route messages regardless. If you have the same channel programmed parentheses in channel programmed you will decode the messages and stations

I struggled with that also. Right now I like getting all the telemetry information from my nodes because I'm still trying to get used to everything. I think at some point I may remove the private channel.

I’m 13B4 a node always moving as I drive in for work several times a week.
Was trying to use the app and drop waypoints for each hit I got as it seemed to draw a nice little map, but it just crashed the app after 10 pins.
Started just dropping a pin using a basic app and it’s really turned into something over the last week or so.
Apologies if “Jacko has shared their position with you.” Several dozen times, but what I do when I’m moving is in channel zero, I press the pin over the message bar and it sends out location and times out after 30 seconds or so. If it doesn’t time out and acknowledges, I drop a pin on the map and send another location. I keep dropping pins and sending subsequent locations until it eventually times out.
On a subsequent day, I’ll go a different route and try to see if i can get the same acknowledgment elsewhere.
I like this a little better than the mesh map because it’s a little more private. Let me know what you think. If you want to DM me a location where you know I’ll get a hit, I’ll give it a shot and continue to update the map accordingly.

Did you get the new RAK solar enclosures? I got one of the new ones with the larger solar panels. The placement of the RAK board on the mounting plate sucks!
There is no room for a USB cable or even a right angle adapter with the board and plate mounted inside the enclosure
The plus is a flat lipo fits really nicely behind the plate between the plate and the enclosure. I can fit a 5000mah battery behind there.
But I'm going to have to use a 18650 holder cuz I can't plug a USB in for charging!

That should get you started.
You'll need to change reverse the power connector pins of the battery if you get that one.
If you want low profile, you'd probably go with the best SMA antenna you can find. You'd install a N connector if you want to use larger antennas.

I'm using this for both my nodes. They screw right in to the back of the box I linked.
Really big hose clamps. I cut mine down to proper size before mounting. But the large clamps give you options.

I have one on my other units but I don't think it will fit this one.
Too late, went with a 18650 so I can swap battery or charge externally
this node isn't going up on any roofs so lots of battery power won't be an issue. This is going to be my temp/mobile repeater/router.

It uses 6 screws in the back which are difficult to insert though
It's really not a box you want to open and close a lot. I think I prefer the outdoor electrical boxes with the latches for easy access.
My cases came with two holes. One seems to be for an external power source. Taped it from the inside and then sealed the hole with silicone from the outside.

The solar case is real nice though.
If your non solar case is anything like my solar, it's worth the 3 bucks for sure.

I managed/was involved in using a very large field deployment of meshtastic and router nodes where our downfall, it really messes with the routing and creates unecessarily high channel utilization

Very valid issue there. But lets say there was an event that required you to actually rely on meshtastic for longer range comms
would you just do default and direct message? Is that still secure?
