#

haha

#

idk I saw on the node map and it looked pretty close

ripe coral
#

the Montalt node is probably somewhere between us-ish, but it's 300 metres higher than we both are, so I'd be expecting us both to be getting most messages via it, really

full trout
ripe coral
#

It's about 5km when I drive via the road, probably 2.5km or so, direct

full trout
#

yes, something like that

#

I don't know if there aren't any actual nodes in a good location from me or something is wrong with my node, but my signal shouldn't be so unreliable.

ripe coral
#

Hmm, dunno, I think the protocol is a little unreliable too tbh

#

Like for example, I'm not reliably getting messages from the Montalt node, which I'd expect I would do given the distance and lcoations of the two nodes and antennas

full trout
#

I often get messages from bcn and girona, but when I send them half of the time it doesn't get acknowledged

ripe coral
#

From where I am to the node is a weird path as it's slightly on the other side of the mountain, but it was working better the other day

#

The Montseny node is no longer visible from Montalt either, that's definitely making a huge difference

#

I think I need to place the Montalt node better, so it can at least get to the Montseny node again

#

Hard to know whether Montalt node has degraded for some reason; leaves on trees or something. Or whether the Montseny node has.

full trout
#

Is there any way to contact the owner of the Montseny node?

copper carbon
#

I paid him to set up a new node

full trout
#

oh wow

#

I didn't know that

copper carbon
#

what do you need to tell him?

full trout
#

We could ask him if he knows anything about the status of the node, if he's also felt that the connection got a bit worse

copper carbon
#

got it

full trout
#

There is also a lack of nodes in a good location near mataró, I get some nodes but they always have a bad signal

ripe coral
#

Oh sweet! Didn't realise you knew him!

copper carbon
#

yeah I met him though the telegram

#

he showed me vids of him installing the Montseny router

#

how it all started

ripe coral
#

Oh that's cool, It's a great location for a node, it was one of the first places I went to test the distance out

copper carbon
#

oh nice

#

yeah

ripe coral
#

I got a connection from my home node to Montseny one day, which was pretty cool - haven't actually seen his router from my house though, so perhaps his location wasn't quite the same as where I tested

#

It's quite high and has great views all around, one of the highest spots in the park Montnegre.

#

Downside is it's still only ~600 metres, same height as Montalt

copper carbon
#

i’m not sure but i’ll take a look at it later this week

#

i’m gonna scope out the map

ripe coral
#

Google Earth is handy for this 🙂

copper carbon
#

yeah

native oasis
#

According to this tool, you might still have problem to reach montseny.

#

I have tried to good location on your side of the mountain.

#

Though a sail boat would have no problem reaching you

copper carbon
#

imagine installing a node in the water

#

@native oasis ask you french?

copper carbon
#

@ripe coral he said “Es posible ya que cuando instalé montseny en el árbol, no había hoja alguna”

#

also my T-beam is arriving today

ripe coral
# native oasis According to this tool, you might still have problem to reach montseny.

Yeah, there's not much extra height, but I could get it on the other side of the trees more easily. I suspect the trees might be the issue. My test yesterday was kind of invalid as the test node I took with me was having issues due to the new firmware, so I'll have to test again tbh. If I can find a spot on foot that works, then I can potentially move the fixed node to that location.

ripe coral
#

Do you know if the location it shows on the map is accurate or not, did he say?

copper carbon
#

@ripe coral he said it’s approximately the location yes

ripe coral
#

That's good to know, I can validate my placement a bit better

native oasis
copper carbon
native oasis
#

What gave it away?

copper carbon
native oasis
#

Well spotted 🙂

copper carbon
#

haha

#

from which part?

#

in from paris

native oasis
#

Nope the north, though I spent 6 years in Paris.

copper carbon
#

I meant to say i’m from paris

#

but nice

native oasis
#

Let's get a drink and talk nodes one day. @ripe coral when will you be in the office?

copper carbon
#

yeah sure!

copper carbon
#

@full trout can you send a ping?

#

longfast

#

i’ve put new node on other side

full trout
copper carbon
#

ah ok

full trout
#

I've got a great connection with the 2250 node

#

This is the traceroute I have with @copper carbon

#

I don't know why there are so many hops between me and luu

copper carbon
#

-16dB? hmm

#

seems bad

full trout
#

i'ts doing a direct connection

#

instead of hops

copper carbon
#

yeah

#

but still

#

before it was better

#

with the seeed card

full trout
#

is it in the same place?

copper carbon
#

yeah kinda

#

just a little more to the right

#

maybe the meliá is blocking

ripe coral
copper carbon
#

interesting

ripe coral
#

I have to do some running around

copper carbon
#

what time?

ripe coral
#

I don't think I'll have time tomorrow tbh, I have to go do some things - we're organising an event and I have to go visit the locations and the restaurants and check them out 🙂

#

I'll be in the city more over the coming weeks though!

copper carbon
#

sure, just let us know

ripe coral
#

hmm, that's a point... I thought the node had been quiet today, I just realised I don't know where the phone is it's connected too, lol

#

And that T114, I had to eventually do a full factory reset on it before it started to see new nodes again

#

That was after flashing back to an earlier firmware

#

So unsure if a factory reset would have fixed it without the firmware flash or not, but worth bearing in mind if you have similar.

#

It could be something like if you erase the node db in the client, other nodes don't send you their nodeinfo unless they don't recognise your public key

#

So you have to do the factory reset to reset the public key - this is a guess 🙂

copper carbon
#

which node are you talking about?

ripe coral
#

This is my a354 node, the H2T/T114 that I tried to use to test the locations on the Montalt mountain the other day - it was playing up and not seeing any nodes

copper carbon
#

ah

full trout
#

Restoring it fixed the issue

#

it could be a weird bug on the most recent firmware

ripe coral
#

Interesting! I'm guessing it could be something to do with the keys, but not sure.

#

Yeah, it seemed to be triggered when I updated the firmware to the latest

ripe coral
#

I did a factory reset from the software on iOS, it's under Device in settings iirc

#

You'll need to re-enter all settings, obviously, as it's a factory reset! 🙂

copper carbon
#

okay

#

i'll do it tmr

full trout
#

on which node are you having problems?

copper carbon
#

2250

full trout
#

oh

copper carbon
#

I only got like 20 nodes

full trout
#

Leave it on for a bit longer

copper carbon
#

okay

full trout
#

it takes time

ripe coral
#

oh, 20 nodes is a lot more than I got, I'd got 2 after 24 hours, so it definitely wasn't right

#

though you're in a much busier spot I guess 🙂

ripe coral
#

When I first setup a node, I literally didn't see anyone for the first month or so, so that still doesn't seem too unusual for me tbh 🙂

copper carbon
#

is this gonna happen?

ripe coral
#

Well, not in the city, no

#

Didn't know those alarms existed tbh, I presume it's a broadcast to cell phones, rather than sirens

#

oh, yeah "Además de activar las sirenas, Protecció Civil también mandará una alarma al teléfono móvil de los ciudadanos que se encuentren en las zonas mencionadas."

copper carbon
#

yeah

full trout
#

My traceroute to ITWorm is crazy

copper carbon
ripe coral
#

Just did a ping for Seba from here 🙂

copper carbon
#

wow

#

seed card is amazing

ripe coral
#

Yeah, I was surprised it got direct connections to both nodes

full trout
ripe coral
#

That location was a bit unrealistic, pretty sure there's no other nodes out there at the port but it shows Meshtastic can cover a good distance with LOS

copper carbon
#

I will be going to the costa brava for the weekend, i’ll see what nodes I can get there

#

maybe see if I get a connection to you guys as well

#

cap roig

copper carbon
#

@ripe coral @full trout on the way there I will send message when I pass by you guys

ripe coral
#

Ahh, yeah, will be interesting

#

At the moment I don't think I'm connected to any of the nodes up there, due to the Montseny node being out of contact, but let's see!

copper carbon
#

yeah

#

I got someone in Roses

copper carbon
#

in an hour

ripe coral
#

Wow, you're starting your weekend early 😉

copper carbon
#

yeah, well i’m in summer vacation already

#

school’s over

ripe coral
#

Lucky you! 😦

copper carbon
#

hahah ye

#

exams were a pain tho

ripe coral
#

I wish I sitll got school holidays, them were the days

copper carbon
#

you don’t get them at work?

ripe coral
#

Well, not as many. I think it's like 24 days of holiday a year or something.

copper carbon
#

a year????

#

yikes

#

they got you working hard

ripe coral
#

That's normal!!

#

I think a lot of Spanish/Catalan companies actually give you less

copper carbon
#

I think i’m not passing through the beach

copper carbon
#

idk I get like at least 5 months out of the year

#

3 for summer

#

2 for winter and easter

#

I got acknowledged here

ripe coral
#

Ugh, being young is underrated

copper carbon
#

haha

ripe coral
#

Probably see Atomsk around there

copper carbon
#

maybe he received my message

ripe coral
#

If you're heading in the direction the map shows, pretty sure you're going the wrong way, haha

copper carbon
#

nah i’m taking the AP-7 up north now

ripe coral
#

Probably won’t see mine or Seba from there as we’re both on the other side of the hills

copper carbon
#

hops?

ripe coral
#

You’ll probably see the Router Montalt node though

#

Yeah, if anything I’d imagine a hop via Montalt as it’s up at 600m

copper carbon
#

yeah

#

I sent another test at Mollet del Vallès

#

acknowledge

#

next test is at granollers

#

and then sant celoni

#

are you guys getting my messages?

#

getting there

full trout
#

@copper carbon i got your message on long fast

copper carbon
full trout
#

did you get mine?

copper carbon
#

on longfast? no

full trout
#

I didn't get RadioPepper

copper carbon
#

montseny is up there somewhere

full trout
#

i'm sending messages

copper carbon
#

nothing yet

ripe coral
#

Saw Seba's test but nothing else

full trout
#

Hola!

#

I met informer on the mesh today, he's also from sant vicenç de montalt. His hex is e6f3

copper carbon
#

just got a signal in the middle of the forest from this node

ripe coral
#

Ah, E6F3-CLM-868, I see that node! 🙂

#

Montseny router has popped up for me again as well

native oasis
#

We have just received a message from Valencia on LongFast.

copper carbon
#

that's cool

#

btw why do you guys name you nodes like this-GW-868

#

or CLM

#

or Cl

#

what does it mean

native oasis
copper carbon
#

I don't have taht at all

#

who's connecting us?

native oasis
#

R = Router, CL = Client, CLM = Mute. 868 for the frequency. They have proposed in the group to follow the portuguese group naming "name-type-frequency"

copper carbon
#

and GW?

#

gateway?

native oasis
#

Client that is the base and message there will probably not be read. Gateway indeed.

#

It's Montseny that on good day can catch Valencia.

copper carbon
#

nice

#

oh I got people in valencia

#

that's almost a world record

#

for meshtastic distance

ripe coral
#

Wow, that’s crazy.

ripe coral
#

So tomorrow I have to go to Italy/Milan for a day, so I'll be leaving my car node at the car park at T1 for the day, with a node with me in my laptop bag as I travel.

#

So you might see some pings across all of BCN around 7:30am as the flight takes off and then around 8pm or so as it lands again 🙂

#

And potentially some connections via the car node to nodes south of Barcelona from the stationery node in the car park - I'll park on the top level of the car park 🙂

ripe coral
#

352km!

#

5 hops, but still!

copper carbon
#

yeah i saw that as well

copper carbon
#

you should do canned messages

ripe coral
#

Hmm, think the canned messages are only for being able to trigger from the device though

#

As in, you set a few up and then you can use a rotary encode from the device to select and send

copper carbon
#

idk

ripe coral
#

yeah

#

The only thing that triggers messages unattended is the range test, but it just sends out sequence numbers on a timed basis (it's pretty annoying)

#

I'll leave it set to do nodeInfo every hour, that should trigger a few during the day

#

node info and gps info, that'll probably be fine

copper carbon
#

yeah I need to learn more of these features, I haven’t gotten into range tests yet

ripe coral
#

it's kinda basic tbh, with an esp32 based node you can get it to save the data to map out the received pings, but it's best done on a private channel or it's super annoying for other people 🙂

copper carbon
#

oh okay, will do. I have a private channel between my home node and my tracker

ripe coral
#

That’s what I do too, yeah!

copper carbon
ripe coral
#

I don’t understand the point of putting 868 in the node name… nor this idea of putting CL/CLM etc, that’s all contained in the nodeInfo packet anyway 🤷🏼‍♂️

#

Just ends up making the node names less readable

copper carbon
#

ong I kept telling myself this

#

I don’t understand putting the frequency at all

#

and how’s italy?

ripe coral
#

Warm 😂

#

Haven’t seen any nodes here though

copper carbon
#

here too!

#

UV 9

ripe coral
#

Though I’m just right in the city and haven’t had much time to test - already heading back to the airport 😂

copper carbon
#

ah dang

full trout
ripe coral
#

Ah yeah, didn’t realise he had a YouTube channel tbh, will have to take a look!

#

Cleaner and more professional, hmm

#

Not sure I care 😂

#

I dislike the idea of repeating things in the name that are already being transmitted over the air, just seems pointless to me.

#

I know the node is 868 or I wouldn’t have received it on my 868mhz node 🤷🏼‍♂️

#

And I can see the node it’s set too because it gets broadcast (more efficiently) in the packet info 🤷🏼‍♂️

#

I can see the benefit of putting things like whether the node is fixed or mobile, as in, in a car or carried with a person, that’s useful and doesn’t exist in the node info.

#

Definitely worth having an identifier so you can see which nodes belong to who. Or to have a name that explains them: “Router Montseny” with the mountain icon for example, super helpful.

full trout
#

I just got messages delivered to a node in valencia

#

370km and just 1 hop away

copper carbon
#

wow!

full trout
#

the mestastic record is 331km

copper carbon
#

yeah

#

but someone actually told me it was 1300km

#

on a boat

full trout
#

probably 434 mhz

copper carbon
#

maybe

full trout
#

I've had directcontact with a node in valencia which doesn't report position but I guess it should be around 350km away

#

Balcón de Montroy

#

I first got a connection from valencia last year and I couln't belive it lol

copper carbon
#

damn

copper carbon
ripe coral
#

Soy me!

#

I was in the city at a friends for BBQ, hospital sant Pau area

copper carbon
#

oh nice

wide mantle
#

Zaragoza hoy.. 11 nodes 👍

ripe coral
#

Fantastic! Getting some traction there too!

nocturne atlas
#

Basque country, network is growing fast

ripe coral
#

Good density in that area!

ripe coral
#

Holiday season seems to be bringing out the nodes

ripe coral
#

So, my "Siftah 996" node got stolen

#

so if anyone sees it pop-up online, please let me know, I would very much like to go visit it's new owner 😉

#

Siftah 996 HELTEC_MESH_NODE_T114 F8:B9:96:D7:1B:E0

ionic hazel
copper carbon
#

I will be checking

#

not at home yet

ripe coral
#

I noticed it was actually still around the airport when I left yesterday evening, the node I had with me made contact at nearly 6pm, but the battery was down to 37% by then

#

So it's likely it's still somewhere in that area - I've just been over there again, as I had to go to the mossos there, but I didn't see it.

#

Battery is no doubt dead by now 😦

copper carbon
#

last seen 3d ago

#

what other valuables did they steal?

ripe coral
#

Ah, just a bunch of random stuff really

copper carbon
#

but like expensive stuff?

ripe coral
#

They were after the documents for the car by the looks of it, as they tore into the dashboard to get into the glovebox for the docs

copper carbon
#

or nah

copper carbon
ripe coral
#

In total there'll be a few grands worth of stuff, aye, but it should all be insured and covered

#

They literally smashed the window open using a fire extinguisher 😦

#

The car has double glazing with laminated windows, so they take a bit of breaking

copper carbon
#

damn bro

ripe coral
#

Yeah, bit annoying, but y'know, nobody hurt, all good, just an inconvenience really

copper carbon
#

yeah

#

you think it was on purpose that they broke in and took documents?

#

or they just broke in like morons and took whatever they saw

ripe coral
#

I think a bit of both

copper carbon
#

hm ok

ripe coral
#

The weird thing is, when I went back today, I spotted another car which had also been broken into in the same way - but the glovebox was closed and it didn't look like they'd stolen those documents.

#

So it makes me wonder. but I dunno, maybe they'd just closed it again after stealing them, I didn't look too closely.

#

They certainly foced their way into the boot of my car and took everything they thought was valuable.

copper carbon
#

maybe they are trying to steal company documents

ripe coral
#

I need to get the insurance assessor to check over the car first, before i start tidying it and cleaning, but I'm just hoping there isn't too much damage to the seats etc. I can see some blood on the centre console, where I guess they cut themselves getting through the window.

ripe coral
#

I understand they steal the cars documents, so they can clone the car and get away without paying tax or something, dunno

copper carbon
#

oh damn

ripe coral
#

The mossos aren't interested in checking for DNA, we did tell them

copper carbon
#

what why?

ripe coral
#

I don't think they go to that much trouble for a car robbery

copper carbon
#

I swear they are working in 1860

#

in the US they would

#

a DNA test is not much trouble at sll

#

it's really easy

#

they just send it to a lab

ripe coral
#

dunno, they're a bit more old fashioned here sometimes 🙂

copper carbon
#

yeah fr

#

btw my T1000-E stopped turning on

#

I got another one

#

but yeah it broke on me

ripe coral
#

Ah, I can tell you how to fix that

#

Hold the button down, touch the charger to the pins and then disconnect

copper carbon
#

no no

ripe coral
#

then it'll be reset and should work again - I've had the same

copper carbon
#

I tried everything

#

I know how the damn thing works

#

I know broken when I see it

ripe coral
#

Ah, the reset thing is annoying tbh, I didn't know about it and was away with a bricked node, super annoying

#

What happened to yours then?

copper carbon
#

there's a part inside that fried that is attached to the bootloader

#

so it will never boot on again

#

I opened it

#

and I tried to fix it

#

but nah

ripe coral
#

Pretty compact and fiddly I guess

full trout
# ripe coral

Dang, that's really a shame, my mom's car got broken in to a while ago in a similar way and they stole a bunch of valuable stuff. The police didn't really do anything. To my knowledge they didn't even bother checking security camera footage.

ripe coral
#

Anyway, nearly sorted now 🙂

wraith pine
#

@ripe coral hi. Im in Barcelona Forum Diagonal Mar. Bought Meshtastic Mesh Device Station G2 - EU868MHz

ripe coral
#

Awesome! What's your node, I'll look out for it 🙂

wraith pine
# ripe coral Awesome! What's your node, I'll look out for it 🙂

I ordered an antenna with higher gain and a cable. I'm waiting for it to arrive and will turn everything on. I live on the third floor of a 17-story building. If it can reach from the 17th and not from me, I'll put a kit with a solar battery on the roof. I'll be in touch soon.

copper carbon
#

@ripe coral i’m in california. The mesh here is so good

#

600+ nodes

ripe coral
#

Yeah! Meshtastic really took off in the US eh?

#

I guess they’ve a much bigger HAM community over there too

#

And more interest in off-grid comms, prepping and all that kinda stuff

ripe coral
copper carbon
#

i’ve got so many nodes

copper carbon
#

you need a clear line of sight to mataró near there

ripe coral
#

Hmm, I don't see a 71d4 node

#

Which is odd, as you obviously can see my SBS2 node!

#

Aha, I do see it, my bad!

#

I just sent you a dm 🙂

wraith pine
ripe coral
#

Sweet!

wraith pine
#

Dm not sending for you

#

Direct message

ripe coral
#

I don't see your response for some reason, on the public channel

ripe coral
#

I'm not entirely surprised though given the number of nodes now, I suspect the network topology is starting to be a limit

wraith pine
#

How many hops u have?
Trace to node Reencarni Solarium work?

ripe coral
#

Hmm, will check

ripe coral
#

Everyone still meshing?

#

My solar node is still up, kinda amazed it's lasted tbh

#

Will have to go visit it if I get a second, be interesting to see how it's holding up

copper carbon
#

I go on and off yeah

ripe coral
#

I just ordered some new nodes to play with too, no real reason though, I have too many already, lol

#

you still got your nodes active though?

#

I've currently been playing around with vhf/uhf and PMR446 handsets

#

Went for a driving holiday with some mates and used the PMR's in the car to keep in touch. Made me want to investigate them all again and upgrade my kit 🙂

copper carbon
ripe coral
#

Dude, charge your node, you’re giving me low battery anxiety from 7 hops away 😂

copper carbon

that info is incorrect

Just retrieved the old “TALT_36AF” node from the forest. It went offline for some reason.
