would require proxying the mqtt connection from api server to web client over websocket, since the mqtt servers don't support websocket by default, and can't connect to it in browser
emqx can do it
I do find myself clicking the reload button to update nodes a lot tho
downside: more load on server due to mqtt proxying. upside: less load on server due to less people refreshing/reloading
yeah
aprs does live updates to map
so many packets though, browser would probably go brrrr with lag
I think the challenge would be.... dealing with protobuf in browser?
that's doable
ah so it is https://github.com/protobufjs/protobuf.js
but yea, that'd be a lot of traffic for a browser to deal with. Most of which isn't important for the browser client. Dupe (json/protobuf) and data that doesn't really need to be real time
y my browser already go brrrr
yeah, I would likely clean it up server side. server connects to mqtt, and sends small deduped packets to browser over websocket
I feel the lag when cluster is off
forever remember
the derp is no more
will fix the issue where your updated waypoint should have marked as expired
db was only querying for non expired waypoints, and then ensuring it only used the latest
but it should use the latest expired too
indeed
Fun map. Thank you!
for posterity
expired waypoints are hidden from ui now
i think the nodes max age should apply to waypoints too
or maybe have a separate option
any way to fix up the neighbor links? when there's a link both ways, maybe have it stop at the center between the two nodes?
yeah, I've been thinking about this for the last few days
atm, if there a link 2 ways, it's darker, due to opacity mixing
but I'm still thinking on how to do this
or apply an offset and use a different color?
lines overlapping etc
or gradient!
my initial thought, was curved lines, with an arrow pointing from in the direction of tx
buldge them out
I'll find an example
like these
random google pic
i like straight lines better... it being rf and all
same
maybe offset like you said, but there would have to be some sort of funky lines to join them back up to original point if offset from center
offset only a little 😛
being able to hover over nodes, and see the lines from it, to the neighbours heard or transmitted to would be neat. but have to think about it more
still an issue if lots of neighbours
https://meshtastic.liamcottle.net/?lat=37.80175644112801&lng=237.79328942298892&zoom=16 i'ma firin' muh lazer!!1
An interactive map of all Meshtastic nodes.
of course!
also, wen miles vs kilometers?
metric better 😛
I could add a setting to toggle showing km/mi but would be converted to mi after the fact
doesn't sound too bad
I'll probably forget about this one, but if you really want it, open as issue in repo and I'll get to it
i don't really want it. other people do!
they can open an issue then 😄
found a plugin that can do pixel offsets for polylines
will need to polish more than 1px offset, but that does help a bit
oh, here I thought you meant you'd offset the center of everything by 1 or 2px, just to drive the perfectionists mad
still pretty hard to look at even when doing the pixel offsets, because there's too many lines going between other nodes
I'm playing with a new ui, to only show lines for a specific node
too much clicking xD
a bit yeah, I like the idea of hovering a node to auto show the lines, but that's not something that will work on mobile
want it to be consistent experience on desktop and mobile
also, gotta tap like 10+ times on mobile to hit a line lol
and then if you hover, how do you switch from "heard them" to "heard us"
rekt
yeah
I mean, I could make them thiccccccer
but then it's still ugly because too many lines
wen color lines based on SNR?
probably after the above
if you have line colors there will be less need to click on lines
also, line/neighborinfo expiry is a mystery
yep, but also think we need this single node display as well. otherwise if lines are shown for all nodes that exist, the colours will merge due to opacity
mmm,
last neighbour info packet I get, is what is shown
and has the timestamp
and no expire? 👀
time for yet another option
needs moar historical neighbors too
I mean the map doesn't allow us to filter by MQTT topic yet...
I was going to add a filter based on lora region, but that only works for nodes that can upload map reports directly to mqtt
we have no idea where the nodes come from. we only know it's magic.
but for the times when you really want to know, there's meshmap.net lol
oh thats true, I forgot about that
yeah, mine only shows the mqtt topics that the node itself send packets to, and not the topics another node sent that nodes packets to
also, I think that's disabled now too
since I don't collect the service envelopes anymore
I will revisit that later I think
More cow bell
I have infiltrated the sussex chat
https://youtu.be/ctIbXWIHVXo?si=gv2kDyamlmmCCCGN&t=199 not enough cowbell
99 MORE VIOLIN WINNERS LEFT. Will it be YOU? Enter the Kennedy Violins Challenge on Tonic and start practicing: https://downloadtonic.com/win-a-violin
CHALLENGE ON TONIC BEGINS MARCH 18TH
Big thanks to @KennedyViolins for making this possible and for letting us prepare those violins in such "interesting" ways 🎻 Also huge thanks to @ColburnScho...
how does one win at violin?
it's all rigged
Great talent. Definitely low on cow bell.
@blazing pine Having an issue where gps doesn’t update on T beam supreme even when moving with the smart position
I sent a location request thing and it updated location
But not automatically
are you checking from client or from another node?
Client
weird. i thought that was a problem with the android client.
Made it out 😛
total number of nodes seen during the trip was 170 BTW
HOU- LAX - OAK - BWI - HOU
but how many were seen with no nodeinfo?
write your own protobarf logger
im teaching my self python right now.
will be a nice project to take on.
Currently working on a system to log temps using a IR camera over a conveying system 🙂
Thinking about using meshtastic to communicate the readings
Totally not me wanting to put " repeaters" at ports on high structures like 400ft cranes 😛
plant a node, grow a mesh
I'm currently collecting parts to build three "throwaway" solar nodes
I have 30 RAKs let me know if you need some/ cant find anywhere
!! why so many
because it was cheaper per unit when ordering from china
My thought was i can sell them for 35 a pop to people that need them and at the same time it funds my attempt to grow the Houston Mesh
dollar less the ordering from rokland 😛
i make like 4 bucks per unit. #GettingRich
https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804946329924.html buy the rest of this. sell pre built for more monies
comes with PCB mount w/ bt&Lora antennas
buy all 13 of them. save muh wallet
because I don't wanna have to buy 13 more Meshtastic kits and batteries and solar panels
i may make an order.
but thats gonna be after i close out current projects. Got too much going on and i may have over spent a bit with the nodes.
it was " only" 800 bucks ish
if you buy them all it ends up being like $12-13 each whereas they're normally $33+shipping each
I'm happy with my 3 😆
much cheapo \o/
I got 5 volt regulated solar pannels. can i just plug that in to the charge port on a RAK?
yep!
Sweet! got like 5 pannels here, gonna make some cool nodes 🙂
might sell 4-5 of them too just to recoop cost.
thanks for the heads up 🙂 \
you're welcome
I wish the cube cell could run meshtastic
it's too potato
I think that's because the NodeBroadcast interval is >= 1h (at least in the App), while Nodes can be learned from other packets too.
5 minutes
it was changed recently from 1 minute, I believe
The dropdown on my iPhone doesn’t show anything less than 1h. But I don’t know what the device would really accept via the yaml config
keep it at 3h. nodeinfo is automagically sent/requested when needed, with 5m minimum cooldown
what panel? I found one on Amazon that's basically just USB out that I was going to use with my Rak. Hoping it doesn't do anything too stupid
always check voltage first
ya
Nice
18650s in series, plugged into solar input port
oh uh.... yea... so... that's gonna have a REAL short lifespan
Sorry, discord is on a side monitor and the image is teeeeeeeeeeny tiny.
pretty surprised the red led is lit
@earnest bane I blame you for this adventure
I mean.... LED's work above their rated voltage, they glow really bright too! just... very briefly
I just had to check to see if maybe there was more wiggle room on the solar port
yea, no. Unless those 18650 were dead dead, then something on that board is gonna be dead dead.
this might be my lack of deep electrical understanding. But how does one get NEGATIVE voltage. I understand wiring things backwards = bad, but... negative volts?
that can happen with many things
like maybe even a solar panel at night ¯_(ツ)_/¯
This is what I got
When I have a chance I’m going to probe its voltage.
I'm guessing 5.1-5.2v
I heard that some don’t regulate the voltage and relies on the panel output
Just want to confirm
Oh, I'd be shocked if many were regulated. Cheap chinese dodads and all that
I'm pretty sure almost all the [non-scam] ones with USB connection are regulated
As Regan said. Trust but verify.
I assume it’s regulated but gonna test it before I connect other things to it
after looking closely at review pictures, the panel is a "6v" panel, so would potentially be outputting >7v if unregulated
kinda weird. I would assume those things would use a 7-12v panel
(usually 9v)
https://www.amazon.com/Security-Adjustable-Waterproof-Rechargeable-Battery/dp/B0CN96W45R 7v panel, for example
BUT fishy thing: the review photos for that one show either 6v or 12v panel
i'm thinking 6v.
buck 1v
@blazing pine If a channel is named differently than the default does that change the frequency?
depends on settings, but generally yes
Can you generate a QR code code for a primary channel called “Parachute Mobile” and default encryption. I just need to send a quick email and I’m a bit busy rn.
If you can’t that’s fine I’ll just do it when I get back
i have 2 hanfs and mouth full of food right now
Can you explain how? I lived in a world where I assumed that only the channel ID was influencing the actually radio frequency 🤪
by channel id i assume uou mean channel hash?
and channel hash is generated from channel name + key
I thought the numeric index was the only input to the frequency
Let me try to find some documentation
index only affect primary/secondary
Chat Channels and LoRa Frequency Slots
Previously, Meshtastic used the word "channels" to define two different configuration properties: Messaging Channels & LoRa Channel Numbers. However, this could lead to confusion since "channels" was being used to refer to two distinct concepts. To clarify the distinction, the decision was made to change "LoRa Channel Number" to "LoRa Frequency Slot".
Just found the calculator!
https://meshtastic.org/docs/configuration/tips/#creating-a-private-primary-with-default-secondary this part
Tips and Solutions to help you get the most out of your Meshtastic device and network.
If your LoRa frequency slot is set to the default (0), the radio's transmit frequency will be automatically changed based on your PRIMARY channel's name. In this case, you will have to manually set it back to your region's default (in LoRa settings) in order to interface with users on the default slot:
I finally get it now
And is only client side, never goes over Lora
indeed
welcome to the yay area, btw
@pure shoal
needs a bit more trig in them offsets
those are real neighbors
all of them 👀
Rly
Wew
I have a new button btw
Can show neighbours for specific nodes
It turns off neighbours layer
Might need page refresh to show up
how about this for desktop users: click node once to see neighbors, click again to toggle heard stuff
I played with showing both TX/RX neighbours at the same time and it looked bad
But yeah, I will play more with how things show up
Too many clicks atm
the green/red is for SNR, yeh?
i think it maybe be better to adjust it to some other arbitrary value
-8? -10?
or at whatever point reliable becomes partly unreliable
Would need to be a config setting probably
gradient xD
indeed
Then making them thicker hides others
fun
Trying to keep it simple
how about using them arrows as hitboxes to select/view neighbor line info
then you can somehow show both in/out
them lines are pretty hard to hit even with a mouse lol
That’s an external plugin. No click events, and probably wouldn’t be immediately apparent to click those.
Probably just have to increase the width of the lines
I did have them thicker in testing but removed that before pushing to prod.
Will play some more later.
perhaps one day i can make this connection... 53km!
Maybe when someone goes to Mt Umunhum
or maybe this is more feasible
because tiny antenna
@earnest bane i noticed zooming with scroll goes in large steps. maybe it's double-zooming?
ah happens on meshmap.net too
Haven’t noticed that? My PC mouse clicks per scroll. Maybe you zooming multiple idk
i have a scroll ring. seems to work right everywhere else.
see if your scroll equals the zoom using "-" and "=" on keyboard
also happens on openstreepmap.org. hmmm
time for windows 10 vm!
works right in the VM
okay the double-scrolling is happening somewhere in my window manager or xserver
for some reason it works right in gqrx (qt)
also works in geeqie (gtk)
however, xev shows two events on each scroll "click"
ButtonPress event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0xc00001,
root 0x57d, subw 0x0, time 43087755, (516,9), root:(1599,957),
state 0x0, button 5, same_screen YES
ButtonRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0xc00001,
root 0x57d, subw 0x0, time 43087755, (516,9), root:(1599,957),
state 0x1000, button 5, same_screen YES
That’s fun bug lol
https://www.quirksmode.org/dom/events/tests/scroll.html behaves the same in both linux chrome and windohs vm chrome
https://github.com/Leaflet/Leaflet/issues/7403 apparently other people have similar problems
That’s fun… comments were saying fix was being added to 1.9.0, but I’m already using 1.9.3
arrrgh i can't figure it out. even regular webpages scroll at "half speed" on windohs vm compared to linux
most people seem to complain about too slow a scrolling speed
i have scroll ring so it doesn't matter to me as i could scroll thousands of lines in one go
apparently i can send 53 scroll events with a flick of a finger
compared to 3-6 on a regular mouse wheel
418 events in 10 seconds with light scrolling. 838 events in 10 seconds through flicking.
Crazy
it's how i go through a whole day's security camera footage in minutes, lol
also good for going through EULAs
... but it's not free. i measure about 15 additional watts energy consumption flicking through a long webpage
pagedown button uses 2-3 watts
holding pagedown button uses 9-11 watts
PROGRESS! changing page zoom to 150% makes scroll zooming work 1 step at a time
so i guess it's a osm/map bug after all. durp.
or some sort of weird dpi issue...
and on windohs vm, once page zoom goes down to 50%, it starts double-zooming on scroll
Yeah that’s just annoying 😂😂
at least now I know I'm not crazy
it's the only earthquake that I ever heard before the shake/thump
usually the sound happens during+after the shaking
what kinda station?
Raspberry shake
oh very cool
the price tag is not
but the concept is
Look. I get not all GPS is created equal, but some of their pricing is...
it's their glorious propositioning system
Anyone use the RAK Ethernet & POE Module and have strange POE/power issues?
Can you hook it up to Meshtastic?
How so? Notifications sent to the mesh? Or data collected through the mesh? The data is all open
Notifications sent through Meshtastic
So if the grid goes down you can get notifications via the earthquake sensor thingy
Using the whole networks data or just a single local station?
With just one sensor it won't get magnitude and the epicenter
My Internet is pretty stable, enough battery to keep it running days
In case of power outages, not sure how big the quake has to be to take the fiber network connection out 🫣
with just one sensor it's liable to get false shakes from particularly tremulous farts
I can make it locally ping when there is a big jolt though
Trucks passing by show up
I can even tell when people are walking in the house
But it is pretty isolated from the house relatively not just up on a shelf upstairs
CNN anchor caught off guard when a caller goes live on air stating the quake was due to a rumbling from Howard Stern's butt crack! This is no time for jokes!
box way too big. needs bigger battery or phat capacitor bank
It’s POE. I didn’t even want to install a battery. But the RAK POE module is kinda janky apparently
It has cold boot issues.
needs moar passive poe power injector?
j/k i know nothing about poe
i only run all my google wifi mesh points over poe because i bought a bunch of them dingle dongles
I have a 24 port POE switch from Ubuiqiti . It powers all sorts of random POE shit without issue, this is the first device that's had a problem. The RAK would start to light up and the red light would blink a few times, power off, restart the proccess. In the mean time the switch would indicate it was sending power for a few seconds and stop.
Then randomly sometimes when I plugged it in to the switch, it'd boot up and work fine.
So it was either use another POE to USB-C adapter, which I have... or just plug the battery in so it can "start" off battery and then continue on POE
As for the box size, yea, it's large. But the top box is the PlanePi and ... I'm going to be honest. The RAK units are cool and power efficient and relatively cheap. But I'm fairly disapointed in terms of lacking features. So the plan is to replace the RAK with a Raspberry Pi anyways, now that Linux is supported directly.
i wonder how much 906.875 interferes with 1090
Its a good question. Tried to put the antenna's offset from each other.
adsb has plenty of graphs to go with it., so it'll just be a "Watch and wait" situation
and not an hour after I put up router "v2", the RPI hats show up
Scored a heap of free old drill batteries and mini solar panels
nice!
winner winner battery dinner!
I guess it's time to start building router v3. I didn't realize these things shipped with GPS and an RTC (at least I assume so by the battery holder on the underside)
Nice! I didn’t even check the specs on the ones I ordered
Just that they were the right ones 😂
likewise 🙂
Two batteries the same… one has a wifi/bt micro controller and buzzer. Other doesn’t…
amazing how much electronics in a simple battery these days
but the electronics are cheap
Give me a sec, just gonna wifi into my drill battery 😂😂
I've heard of BT batteries, for the "find my" and %% batt remaining
mmm yea, that would make sense
its basically an air tag :-p
ah, not RTC battery. "Onboard button cell holder, supports ML1220 rechargeable cell, for preserving ephemeris information and hot starts"
So whats the end goal for all those 18650 cells?
technically the gps is an RTC 😆
What are these?
range test
sec (INT) is from the range test module https://meshtastic.org/docs/configuration/module/range-test/ - it sends a SEQuential series of packets, numbered.
Learn to configure the range test module to create reports, maps, and more.
doesn't show up on the app, only on node screen, yeh?
this guy has been doing the range test for weeks
Yep
I thought modules had their own port numbers
Odd that this one uses the text message port
Older versions of the firmware the range test uses the text message port, now it uses it own port and then saves it as a text message if you have the module enabled. It must be older firmware if it shows up on the device screen
range test... for weeks!
How high a number?
It only shows up in the debug screen for me, and in my bot
I think he does one per 30 minutes? I forgot
Me and andre filter them out pretty agressively
you should take a little drive/walk to his door 😂
Probably end up in project boxes. Have a few high spots for some mesh nodes. So will likely test and then throw them in a box and charge off solar
30 cells looking good so far. Ones in the back are not looking good 😂 still another pack to harvest from, but I wanna find out what that wifi/bluetooth chip is up to before I tear it down fully
Samsung INR18650-20R and Sony MURATA INR19/66
you should wire up the ones in a back to a node, just for pictures. #notabomb material 😆
Oh Liam, I dont know if you saw my @ at you earlier. But I hate you. I've spent the last 2 days trying to figure out how to prometheus all the things.
Hahah, metrics are great
imperials are better
Nice! If a thing doesn’t natively support Prometheus style metrics, I write a tiny express js server that just returns text lines for each metric I want. Then Prometheus just fetches that every 60 sec
So easy
Yea. I'm converting python apps now to use the sdk. don't really need the SDK, but whatever, makes it easy.
Yea. If things change later, SDK will be updated... won't need to think about it.
yeah, nice and easy
also, this was because under voltage
dw01 chip on the tp4056 board I have cuts off at 2.5v
so esp32 go brrr
and factory reset lol
very pissed off chip
reboot over and over
it came back up to 40% bat and worked again
need to find a better board that's nice and cheap
2.5v not good for batteries
lol
I've had cells sitting at 0 volts for almost a year
then charged back up to 4.2 and held for months
🧨
😄
DJI Drone batteries do not like going low voltage
LiPo is scary
I have some of those in the racing drone
idk what is in the dji
used my Mavic pro today
older one
completely ignores all the no fly zone restrictions 😄
Let 2 sit for too long. One just dead dead. The second.... well, It was warm when I pulled it off the charger - which said it failed to charge. An hour later I picked it up and it was still warm.... that's when it quickly went outside.
I think it stayed warm for about 2 days

stop linking me cool things. I have impulse control issues. I almost bough that meshphone thing that someone was filing a PR for meshtastic support for
Does meshtastic run on the pinephone?
Not back when I was playing with it
ok good
The pi hat is probably the only thing there that is worth exploring at the moment I think?
man, the pinephone pro + keyboard (which has a bigger battery) + lora backplate would be a killer cyberdeck
the SX1262 used in the pinephone pro is the same as whats in the waveshare etc hats. So I'd guess it's probably doable.

Battery drain terrible, and after booting up the first time, package updates failed
oooo that's... not good
now I wanna build a cyberdeck... https://hackaday.io/project/174301-raspberry-pi-sdr-cyberdeck

- Ham radio monitoring
- Spectrum surveillance
- General coverage worldwide HF receiver
- Weather balloon tracking and ranging
- Signal identification
- Quick deployment/mobile operations
- Portable air traffic monitor
- AIS Marine traffic...
Gotta toss in a meshtastic compatible radio, of course.

I was curious....
If you dont buy a pi, or don't buy a Pi5 w/ 8gb... then as usual... the pelican is the most expensive single component. Sigh. Stupid name brand cases
Details for the AIS receiving station Oakland Hills and reception statistics
I have ais and adsb
Here
I'm jealous of that. I'd love to do AIS....
I use MT .com all the time. Unfortunately I'm not near the water and the amount you could see from here via radio is probably.... neglidgeable.
I have a large gray pelican case for sale if someone wants one. Cheap or trade for a highly rated high gain base antenna. DM me for details.
South Bay
What about ADSB?
Oh, that I have covered already, one of my favorite things to watch when bored. My station has decent coverage.
wow that's a lot of planes. my toothpick only picks up like 3
many years ago i tried it on my sky-high cb antenna and picked up... a lot
I put a lot of time and energy into building that device. Ironically I got "just as many" planes with my shitty setup in my SF appartment back in the day, because duct taping an antenna to a window got coverage of KOAK and almost KSFO....and it was a top floor appt. I wish I Could find screenshots of coverage from that.
Sadly my spouse will not let me buy a house because "There is good ADSB/AIS/Meshtastic coverage options here"
rent some nice warehouse for fun projects
If everything in the bay area wasn't so bloody expensive, I totally would
i had a nice aircraft hanger lookalike for 2.2k a month
rent probably doubled by now
or quadroupled
I just didn't explicitly list that when I liked a house
She figured it out a few years later
lolol well played then, well played. Much smarter than I was.
you certainly picked a good location for your current house.
but hopefully your earthquake bracing is up to date?
Yeah should be okay 😄
here I’ve got:
- adsb
- aprs (igate, no digi)
- ais
- Meshtastic
- rtk base
mine isn't. but if i don't get squished i'll just rebuild it into something better xD
lora aprs next?
You have a very solid pickup, that's for sure
The antenna array got damaged so they are just laying on their sides on the table outside
i go test aprs now
let's see if i still remember how to use this ancient brick
um, 1200bps, yeh?
I was tempted to do websdr or similar. But... I dunno, there isn't a ton that is interesting in the area unless you've got it wired up to pickup trunk stuff. And I've not seen any web trunk software
or 9600?!?
9600 buad ftw!
I’ve got a few HF rigs, apache sdr, ic705, and x6100
I have a loop and vertical that I usually use here so it is easy up and down in order to not get complaints from my roommate (wife)
I have an aprs capable handheld, I’ll put it on the charger
In the message comment or what?
yah
TH-D74
your packet also heard by K6YIL-1 51.2 miles away
I wish there was (is there yet?) a more accessible regular power output, dual band, APRS (with aprs via Bluetooth) handheld
After I charge I’ll take it outside
ohwait that's vhf only
i think i sent my beacons at like .3 watt
Not 800 I guess, just 750
oh wait it was 100mw
I could plug in the mobile, and do 50w aprs beacon, put some hot pockets out and see how warm they get
Speaking of HAM, does anyone run their Meshtastic setups in licensed mode? Free and clear and LOUD?
I didn’t look in to it much, because I figured it wouldn’t send packets from people who were set to unlicensed?
@pure shoal node acquired
how2acquire
Etsy
It’s really small
Going to be using it as a base camp router
Brining it to Death Valley
I think the tiny solar panel can be sustained out there
too few lines from my cluster 😆
Which node
all of them! well, only 3
please sir, may I haz a line
move to the actual bay area
hey! We're the real EAST BAY. Not you slackers in the middle bay
oh yeah? where's yer mesh?
Hmm, i don’t think I’m high enough up to put a directional antenna with high gain east to bridge the gap
wrong side of the mountains lol
the unit is plugged in. I'm a little concerned it thinks the battery is slowly losing charge
looks normal to me. rak, yeh?
yea
Hey, there is a new node in my area! Slowly we grow!
Hello 👋
Thats my thinking exactly
sutro tower
give or take a couple buildings
bingo
hah! Geoguesser win for me
I mean the shot of Market and Lombard (one of the few places in the city you have big ass red stripped streets meeting) make it really easy to get close.
Sutro + Market is a dead giveaway 😄
Oh yea, and Sutro tower too.
but yeah I'm up here with somewhat uninterrupted views of east bay, south + east SF. Wondering if I should put a router out on my balcony? New to this so learning as I go 😄
The challenge is always "which building," which is kinda fun to try and figure out.
Heck yes! more routers!
any "best practices" conversations I can peep? Slowly sifting through all this lovely info with my very smooth brain.
Very nice, you're talking to what I assume is Oakland Hills Router
Now if only that slacker could get an antenna high enough so us in WC could talk direct....
With Yagi's? Probably not. But no one has put one up there yet, sadly. There are some Ham antenna's on the mountain top, but I dont think they'll let us play
7c5b00dc (sirwnstn) here?
first seen <t:1712693428:R>, last seen <t:1712694916:R>

Alright. Time to begin the Linux build.
Build mine next
well as soon as I figure out how to get this working I'll let you know
The documentation appears to be a bit sparse still. But it's brand new so that's not a shock
Need to get a little poe splitter for mine too. Found it fits nice in the stock case with the hat too!
y poe splitter when can poe hat
Did a couple tests with the wireless tracker too
Got permission to throw a node on here
I hope it's at the highest point
Same 😅
That pole has a good view over the city
I was gonna strap one on the other side of this tree 😂
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V35DH5F This is what I’m using. So far have worked well. The last one is on the plane pi for a year.
is that a siren at the top or only a microwave magnetron and horn waveguide?
neato! I love poe
probably all radio gear
it's the local wisp
one of
doubt theyd have a siren
we have them on the fire stations tho
@earnest bane blue should probably appear on top of red
(but below green)
wait why is red on top of green too
🥬
it's because blue and green were set with different z index, and then I added red later
so they will be zindex based on mqtt status, and then get set to red after lol
should probably be their own layers
but ehhh
I wanted to get it all into vuejs, so it can be reactive, but for now it is how it is
been busy with other things 😛
busy good. better than lazy bum me
send me rak kits overnight pls
all I do is complain and
I don't wanna wait weeeeeks 😢
@torn void 👀
lol I ordered from rak wireless, and they didn't send a tracking link and it's already been 10 days
so I hit them up, and they're like yeah, we send out after 10 days
now it's 11, still no tracking
mine was last seen in China March 28th.
r i p
still no update
yiiikes

too many people wanting to buy
was going to do another order, but through that rokland site, see if it got here before the rak order...
for some reason AliExpress orders come super quick
for rak kits?
for their enclosures at least...
I get ali express stuff to NZ in about a week or so
@earnest bane You are now officially a member of the bay area
I live in New Zealand lmaoo

Liam you need some ? I have a bunch im sitting on. 35 bucks shipped if you get 2 or more
less then 2, you cover shipping
oh shit you are in NZ.... should have read the thread 😛
ill still send you some if you want but need to check on shippibg
overnight shippibg
how many do ya have? would be keen if fast shipping to nz is possible ✈️
20 or so
I eventually plan to import and sell local too, but haven't had a chance to even try the rak kits yet
I can have them in the mail tomorrow.
sure
ok. BME680 works, GPS works... ... and uh not meshtastic. Blarg
I got some motivation out of nowhere and now im adding features to the ios app
woo IOS features!
traceroute progress dialog? 😛
wdym
traceroute progress via mqtt
currently click traceroute on long press of a node, then navigate into the node, click traceroutes and look at top entry
would be neato to show a result as soon as it's available, with a progress dialog showing and abutton to dismiss/ignore pending result
went up a hill today, and wanted to test reaching specific nodes I set up across town. had to go in and out of menus to get it done 😛
it would be nice to immediately know which node first forwarded your traceroute packet
What I was thinking is notification when traceroute arrives and abbility to delete them
Rn im stuck making a feature to stop connecting cause rn its in a loop doing (1 out of 10 connection attempts) for ble
I normally force close when it does that 😄
I think I heard of that happening with android too
I added this earlier today
https://github.com/meshtastic/Meshtastic-Apple/pull/592
that's neato!
android needs features moar than ipone
single code base would be good lol
Todo: add iOS emulator to android meshtastic app
I want to build one in flutter, but will see how that other OSS project gets on
Todo: add apple.com to android to let android users purchase an iPhone
I just use both yeah
Already a project
Build it in PhoneGap 😬
Alright. I have no idea how to debug SPI issues. I'm gonna have to give up for the night. I know the GPS works (UART), and it's all happy and blinkenlitez.... so I assume I'm missing something stupid in SPI configuration.
bring out the scope
and I've got no idea how to get more debug info out of this
bring out them logic probies
I have no logic probes
back when I was building a radio and had no scope, I used the audio amp section to probe other bits and used muh ears to analyze
j/k I electronics illiterate
I did successfully find the bad op-amp though, through divining
fix it on Android too
alright. I give up. no more. Will try again tomorrow.
@blazing pine thanks for the plug 🙂 hooked up @earnest bane
ok. Day 2 of not having any idea how to SPI....letssssssss goooooooooo
I totally didn't have nightmares all night about this stuff
ok cool. So I found the demo python apps from Waveshare and they also fail. So the issue probably isn't meshtastic or the config (which makes sense). It's.... uh... I don't freaking know.
Waveshare ?
are you sure your hardware is spi?
and... it's probably the config... .txt
The config has an example for this exact board, so I doubt its the config. The hardware is SPI. But like I said, even the waveshare provided python examples don't work. I'm leaning to something wrong on the system. I might try writing raspbian to an SD card and trying that instead of DietPi.
so you enabled spi overlay in the config?
removed spi-bcm2708 from the module blacklist?
have you installed archlinux?
So best I can tell, spi is alive and well on this little boxen. And yes, the meshtastic config has the right lora chip, the spidev, gps, i2c
no, and I never will
I don't use arch btw
🙂
https://meshtastic.liamcottle.net/?node_id=1978765696 OHW reverted back to "Meshtastic 9180" by itself
An interactive map of all Meshtastic nodes.
firmware version?
also, my raks do that often. my t-beam did it once.
it reset itself <t:1712706845:R>
it is on solar but the battery doesn't last the night i think
needs moar rak
2.3.4
if it happens to write to flash during a power derp, it'll corrupt and reset at next boot
i feel like there needs to be some lockout if the voltage isn't stable and high enough
or a "router mode" where it doesn't write to flash at all.
yeah that one could be router
i set my neighborinfo to broadcast every hour instead of 15 minutes to reduce flash writes.
router wouldn't send neighborinfo packets?
it's still useful and fun for mqtt map
i had suggested neighborinfo not need to be written to db at all, but nobody heard
and nodeinfo db isn't needed at all if there won't be a phone connecting to the node
@toxic kindle are we on for tonight?
@blazing pine
Yep
Also had the reset in a heltec v3 in client mode. Powered by an 18650 and using a TP4056 to charge it. Because the ESP32 is hungry, and the DW01 chip cuts off at ~2.5v, it has bad time boot looping and then flash gets nuked. Guessing it tried to do a write then? Trying to find a clean, cheap way or a programmable chip, to allow “cut off at X volts, turn back on at X volts”
or turn back on the firmware low-voltage shutsown
“Back on”?
it existed before, but got turned off for the sake of Rak
(because of derpy rak ADC)
Can’t say I’ve seen a setting for it
¯_(ツ)_/¯ it was automagic
Ahh righto. Would be nice to have yet another config to allow for setting those voltages
indeed
Or even a toggle to allow it on boards with good ADC
Solar bois just nuke themselves otherwise
solution: moar sticks of dynamite
Makes me feel like I’m gonna set them up in the wild and they gonna shit themselves in a few days lol
I would like a way to write a custom "factory config" to the radio, so flash derps don't affect important nodes as much
So after 2 days the answers are in
I'm not an idiot, the first of the two Waveshare hats I bought... was bad
I think the oem thingy does all of this except channels
wait what. what oem thing? I remember seeing something like that in debug logs
now get a refund... and fix it
I emailed Waveshare asking for store credit, I'll just buy another. I like their stuff in general. I could buy some supplies for that cyberdeck project I totally don't need to undertake.
If anyone wants to hang out im in the vc
I dont think I can fix it. It's ewaste basically
hah! the GPS module works now
The only downside is that when meshtastic fires up it takes over the connection to the GPS module in some way that's mostly (?) exclusive. There must be some way to... duplicate the data so that it can be accessed outside of meshtastic and used by the OS (ex: NTP)
Ah Maybe the answer is https://manpages.debian.org/unstable/gpsd-clients/gpspipe.1.en.html
send it to me 😆
I can probably fix it without using a pi
me like challenge
Lemme find out what wave share says first. They might want it back. I doubt it. But if they don’t….its all yours.
its ripped
I did that
I opened it to check because:
- packaging looked a bit distressed (sus)
- cashier "forgot" to give me activation receipt
maybe sus: I asked another employee for the manager, and when he asked why, I just showed him the card and he went "oh" and fetched manager
sus: manager offered replacement of card, didn't even seem interested in where I got the card from
maybe sus: there was a small pile of those same gift cards on her desk
Wait so its just a fake card with a fake activation code?
real card, last few digits had some surgery and are gone
Do people just reedeem them and return them?
more like someone was collecting a list of last digits
(along with keeping the rest of the code)
if the staff are in on it, then most likely they know exactly when/which card is activated, and they redeem the card on their own account (or get someone else to do it)
if it's some outsider, then they'll go through the list one by one every once in a while to see which one(s) go through
hmm. I'm not sure how I feel about this new node running 7-hop range test...
for the past 9 hours
what qth?
hams! always with your Q codes!~
Theres always people in #help asking why someone is spamming CQ on Meshtastic
cq cq cw bbq
I wish more people on Meshtastic knew the Q codes because im lazy to type stuff out
Yea. The thieves steal the gift cards, record the claim code and put it into a bot to try and repeatedly redeem. Then put them back on store shelves. As soon as you buy it... their bot claims the money because they have the code before you can give it away and that person use it.
mmmmmm bbq
Sorry im hungry

Not creepy at all..... 🫣
not mine xD
Why are you buying $500 gift cards? It’s not really the prince of Nigeria emailing you. Blink twice if you need help.
the IRS wants them, or else they're gonna take all muh property

🤣
@rapid jungle do you have 2.3.x on all your nodes?
I can't seem to get a hop_start from your nodes
Just one
ah I see. at least I know I'm not going crazy now, lol
which one? MAM?
The node formerly known as OHW
Is there a reason to?
hops_away
Didn't easter already happen? 🐇
Neigh bored 🥱
also, that's probably why you couldn't send me any messages 👀
I just got done testing a stealth router up on a hill in Marin. I am sure some of you may be on here. Farthest node seen was down in Salinas. It would easily last a week on batteries. I will look for a permanent spot that can maintain the stealthiness but with a better antenna and solar panel.
last 4 of nodeid?
0836
You ask for Node not User
Apple app much weird
@rapid jungle yer nodes are stripping hop_start from all repeated packets 🫠
I don't have enough dummy loads to make my own mini mesh for testing
Challenge: How much text can android devs fit in one screen?
wot is this magic shipping
I can go smaller
The average age of a ham radio operator is 68 years, assuming that the Meshtastic community is the same age then no one will be able to read that. Presbyopia becomes noticeable in the mid 40s and continues into the 60s.
Thank you for attending my TED talk
I used to be able to count pixels on my 1600x1200 CRT
can't do it anymore because CRTs no longer exist
It was actually the ones from rak 😂 they sent tracking link a day ago… and now they here…
I wish they sold Raks on Amazon
I would pay extra 20 bucks
I am too spoiled with 2 day shipping
my 3 raks are still in China, no updates since the 28th
it's like this every time I order. watch it suddenly arrive the day after tomorrow lol
I was curious are these operating in repeater mode? Was watching a few videos about that and was interested, it's just a firmware setting right?
repeater mode makes you invisible
If you have the energy to spare I would go Router mode
what if I'm lazy
0 energy to spare.
what's the difference? I think the idea is to place up ours on a friend's property (which he is always up for new proejcts at his site) on a mountaintop, sounds like Router mode is preferable? Do people have to like "friend" or scan their meshtastic code?
Put it on the Default long fast frequency
Should be seeing other nodes
@dense quartz Both router and repeater repeat packets earlier than others
Yea, mode is just a setting. My roof is router_client.
But the main difference is that router sends its own info out and other peopl can see it meanwhile repeater only repeates packets and does not identify itself
What do you mean by that? Just faster than another node that is in RX range?
Nodes wait a certain ammount of time before attempting to rebroadcast messages
so like a normal repeater, anyone on the channel can hear / view messages compared to individualized messages on nodes?
For rpeaters and routers they have less time
Wdym?
What you can "see" is a question of encryption and how you sent the messages. But in general, assume, like ham, everything is sent over the air in a way people can see. Software (and crypto) controls what your system will show you
Is there documentation or something you could also help point me in the right direction?
Repeaters just repeat. Routers repeate and do other things.
Learn about and compare device roles such as Client, Repeater, and Router as well as other Device settings.

I am technically in San Luis Obispo but I come up there a few times and either way good to have other CA people to talk with building this out about 🙂
If you ever need help feel free to ask. Ive learned this stuff by asking too many questions in this server.
Also because you are a ham do not be tempted to use Ham mode (You will be lonely)
Not many people use ham mode
What do I need to wipe?
I flashed new firmware. Nothing was loaded
This is just the Mac 😅
Hello fellow SLO resident. I just got a Lora module and get no nodes where I am.
and just like that, my rak package is out for delivery today
5 watts of FT8 using portable radio / iPad. Antenna is a 5’ whip
QSO with Hawaii is so easy
All nodes on 2.3.4
So much fun. My best FT8 on 5W has been 9k miles to South Africa.
I need to get into HF
My biggest accomplishment so far has been getting a lot of contacts from Mt Umunhum on VHF/UHF for winter field day
Have you tried LEO sats on UHF and VHF? That is fun too. But definitely come over to HF
Have not tried
Will be my first HF experience at the PAARA in the park meeting
How often are you on the air?
7030? 😆
Enjoy. I have built a few HF wire antennas. You can a lot with wire for little $.
I have not been lately, I have been down the Mesh rathole for now.
Same plugged it in today for the first time in like a year
you should play with all your toys every once in a while, lest you forget how to use 'em
nice bb keyboard usage
Not Bay Area related, but I feel like I chat to you lot the most 😂 got a couple of solar boys up on some hills today! One is a heltec v3 with 2x 18650, so I’m expecting battery usage to get rekt. And the other is a rak board with a 3.7v 3000mAh LiPo. They both get into my Linux native pi node at home without issue!
more firmware power savings coming soon
That’s is good news!
I didn’t enable neighbours on these, because I want to avoid them getting nuked 😅
neighborinfo safe on 2.3.4
I set mine to broadcast neighborinfo every hour
what's the issue with neighborinfo? I have a heltec v3 that's unresponsive.
my skyrak lost region earlier today, but that's "normal"
Uhhhh doesn’t sound normal to me lmao
I think it has something to do with derpy Bluetooth connection
ahh ok thx
