It brings me great joy when I see a new node pop up here in ABQ
Hello, I’m in ABQ. I would like to get started with meshtastic. I’m in the NE near Paseo and Wyoming.
My experience here in the SE is that there's not a ton of activity but I know people are working on nodes and every week a new node or two shows up.
Early experimenting days here, it's fun!
I see a node up by Tramway and Candelaria-ish but most people don't broadcast coordinates so who knows where they all are
On occasion, I've seen people in other locations add a regional landmark to their long name fields. It might help in your neck of the woods as well. 🤞🏻
Thanks for the info on other nodes. I'm planning to setup my node on the side of my back yard shed. It already has a solar power system that runs my landscape lights and charges batteries. I am looking at the Wisblock starter kit from Rokland. What are you using?
I have a couple of Wisblocks (one's a solar node on the roof) and just got two Heltec V3s to see what they're like and experiment more.
I love the low power draw of the Wisblocks, that should serve you well.
I run a few nRF52 based nodes (very similar low power hardware to the rak wisblocks) down here in Las Cruces and working on expanding the mesh. Doing updates and some minor reconfiguration over the next few days so they're currently not all inter-communicating
Thanks for the feedback
Hi all. I got several solar nodes up in northern new Mexico. I think I noticed one at the earth ship community near taos
I also drive around the state a lot and have a couple nodes with me.
Be awesome to see if I can reach you from the sangre de cristos
On a flight passing over NM and will be spamming as RAKshaw
Just got myself a Heltec V3 down in las cruces
Are your nodes on MQTT?
Hah I'll try to ping you if I head out that way
when's the next time?
Hard to say haha, my schedule is more on demand. Could be tonight, could be next week. I'll keep an eye out if I see anything on my T-echo heading out that way.
sweet ! see you then
Nice!
They are.. well.. at least partially.. I have one node that's connected to a local MQTT instance with some data being relayed to the public MQTT via a Node Red script
I've got some upgrades planned for this week and I'll switch it over to direct connection to the public MQTT
I’ll get my node back up and try to ping you
If you're using the Medium Fast modem preset you should see quite a few nodes around Las Cruces.. There's 3 reasonably well placed solar powered nodes that provide about 90% coverage over the city and there's 3 or 4 other users here in town that usually have nodes running also.
I see you! look out for "Rocket boy"
Let me grab and fire up a client device and I'll give you a poke.. lol
let me know when your up
Haven't seen you yet, but that doesn't mean I won't.. In the past 30 mins I've seen the following local nodes: Meshtastic RJ1138, Diamond City Radio BBS, Arefu-SN, Megatron-SN, Joe a0dc, Joe2 ec1c, Vault 22, Tracker 2, Lexington2 BBS, Meshtastic Vault 11, Diamond City, TenPines Bluff, Outpost31-SN and all of my various nodes.
Just drop a message in the regular default MediumFast channel and I'll tell you if I see it.. The device I'm using right now is "LCNM Portable 1".
That's just strange.. I wouldn't use the "online" filter.. for me that shows only one node (my own) but there are 7 that have had traffic in the past 10-15 mins
Rocket Boy RB68.. 88% battery level on a Heltec v3..
I switched devices and there you are
I did, but I doubt it made it through. Something whacky is going on.. it shows that your node was last heard 5/25/2024 at 7:56pm.. I wonder if the big solar node that provides most of the coverage over the city is crapping out on me.. I did notice that the batteries haven't been charging correctly.. I may need to run out there tomorrow and clean the solar panel and replace batteries.
Gotcha yea I’ve been able to connect to your solar in the past but maybe it’s off?
I will charge my node and drive around a bit tomorrow
I'm getting telemetry from it.. but it needs to be serviced either way.. 4EEE is running an old 2.1.x firmware.. it's not in a location that I get to very often
👋
I've gone through and re-configured the permanently installed solar powered nodes around Las Cruces to use imprecise positioning (set to 0.2mi fuzziness). Any position reports more precise than that won't display on meshmap.net.
I've also enabled MQTT uplink and downlink to the public broker for the default MediumFast channel. I'm using the msh/US/NM MQTT prefix so only MediumFast traffic within the state will get relayed to / from the local network. If there are other mesh nets in New Mexico running MediumFast, feel free to do the same and help link our meshes together over MQTT.
If anyone has questions about doing so, feel free to reach out
Have people been switching over to medium fast? My nodes in nw NM are still on LF
Down here around Las Cruces I've been running MedFast since I started the local network and I'm at 20+ nodes including the other users that have joined the network. There's also a proposal pending to make MedFast the new default starting in the 3.x firmware version that's probably a year out from being released. MedFast has very similar RF performance to LongFast and is really capable of the same link distance typically, but it is 3.2x faster (3.52kbps vs the 1.07kbps of LF) so it has far more available channel capacity.
In most networks MedFast will perform better than LongFast
Also.. because it's faster.. that means that for each packet transmitted the radio is actually transmitting for a shorter period which will improve battery life and decrease the chances of two radios transmitting at the same time and interfering with each other.
We discussed MedFast for the ABQ mesh, but it means we miss any new users on default settings
I'm considering putting up a 1W node with a decent antenna on LongFast which just broadcasts an automated message periodically that the local mesh is using the MedFast preset.
Might come up a tinyurl that links to instructions for changing over. So they don't end up encrypted with a random key and wonder why there's nobody
Alternatively, I may script it to detect a new node using the NodeDB and only broadcast when one is detected.. that will actually be the way I probably go.. it'll just take a bit longer to accomplish
What's between us in terms of mountains? 🤔
Looks a bit like if I could get a node deployed at South Baldy, we might have a link 🤔
I have a plan for that actually.. look up the Langmuir Research Site.. it's an atmospheric research center on top of Baldy run by NM Tech.. They're on my list to reach out to
Just need permission from them to slap a radio on the research site or their observatory up there
A node at the research site with a 20dBm radio and 6dB antenna would have roughly this coverage.
It's got a valley shot both directions. 👌
I'm currently waiting on some i2c sensors to arrive to deploy out onto my local mesh and my hopes are that if I can show some utility for environmental monitoring.. I might be able to get that department at NM Tech on board
Put together kind of a little demo and then go pay them a visit
Tons of utility for the category of: affordable, easily set up, and insane range
Especially if you get more of the M5 stuff supported.
Actually, in the interest of furthering this front, I'd be willing to work with someone to optimize a plugin for the python bridge for such uses.
@stable oyster We'd definitely welcome you and any others who feel like joining an NM Mesh group Discord.

Reconfigured my nodes to receive the regular channel. I should start seeing those in LC
This is mainly why i haven't switched. I travel a lot and my concern is that i'll miss most things if I switch my portable node but then my portable node won't be able to talk to my fixed nodes at home if i only switch those.
2 portable nodes? 🥲
@stable oyster flying into NM today. If you pick up Long Pants or Medium Pants on LF or MF (respectively) let me know
That's what I'm running right now
Should land in Albuquerque around 21:00 tonight
I wish catching new users was still a concern for the Portland area mesh... LF is at like 200+ nodes and climbing.
Tis an option i suppose lol
Just put together a solar node. Where do we need coverage?
What part of the state are you in?
I’m in the Las Cruces area
Oh okay, I'm not terribly familiar with the status of the mesh down there. My guess is that putting it up just about anywhere (as high as possible) would help.
Up north in the ABQ and East Mountains areas we have a very strong and far reaching mesh.
Yeah, I’m thinking I can put one on Tortugas Mountain as a test to see if the build is sturdy enough and move it to the larger Organ Mountains once I know it doesn’t need much maintenance.
I’ve got family in ABQ that’ll be happy to hear about the state of the mesh up there
Hey all, Albuquerque here... just got a couple radios and playing with this around town, looks to be a pretty healthy mesh? I saw someone mention an Abq Mesh discord server, that still a thing? Also... like 8 months since THIS channel had life so not holding my breath
