I also prefer that there's no explicit leaderboard ingame. There's a hidden MMR, sure, to make sure the top players aren't trashing newbies (which isn't fun or useful for either party in that exchange), but there's no pressure to improve that mmr, and no numbers going down when you lose, which brings down so many other competitive games for me

I'm here for love of the game and drive to play as well as possible
that said, I think having the participation prize primogems is good because that is a motivating factor for more people to play the game, which ultimately makes the entire game and community better
