I kind of think it has to do with shadows in the game pointing the way when either the sun is coming up or the moon is coming up (that's the only times shadows are really noticeable)
Like, the lighthouse shadow hitting something just right, or an acid biome spike shadow hitting something at a certain time
Only thing I noticed, even with max graphics, you don't see the shadows or the items from a very far distance. So it's like you have to be relatively close to the item thats casting the shadow
