To me it is a natural biome, or st least it already was there on the past, but there might be something there attracting the meteors.

As how we have Oak Lands now there're constant meteor hits, but maybe they're small enough to not cause bigger damage. There might be a bigger one at some point that causes a big flood and changes the actual map to the old one.
Then, with the acid biome underwater, the meteor rain would cease until the day a big one came back and caused the 2nd flood that, thanks to the scientists, started all this time travel stuff

That's bad luck at that point, in my experience there's almost no meteor I found without core. Maybe you're searching wrong for it? As sometimes the core can hide inside magma tree's leafs (it happened once or twice to me)
