#Issues with server connection & ping spikes, as well as hit registration.

While game play on OCC is most likely pristine for those who have low ping, and are located close to the host - I have had discussions with multiple people that play from other regions (who average 200 or so ms) about issues with server connection, ping spikes, and hit registration. Them and myself included have had consistent issues on the server with ping, often spiking to 300+ms unwarranted - hit registration is also incredibly delayed. I'm unsure if this is simply related to the speed of the host itself, the matter of being far away from the host in general, or the way that combat works on the server.

Comparatively to other servers that are hosted in NA regions, I tend to have an incredibly stable connection with little to no problems - and hit registration is completely fine. However, on OCC, which from what I recall is hosted in Canada or around that region - combat can be very very poor, and there are often random ping spikes that definitely isn't just local internet related (I've swapped to other servers in NA and had completely stable ping after playing OCC)

I was curious whether this has been discussed behind the scenes, as I have also heard that there's been sudden changes every so often where combat and knockback are reconfigured.

TL;DR - Ping and connection is randomly unstable on the server, and as someone who has played at around 200ms in competitive MC since 2017, OCC has always had very odd combat and hit registration compared to other related servers. I'd be interested to have a chat with an administrator or anybody high up about this, and any other person who shares this concern to also chip in.

i second this hitreg has been adjusted and the ping spikes not just happened to 200ms players ive seen it on few players below 150ms when it happens all they can do is wait, ive heard from someone they fixed the issue by joining with spectrum.oc.tc but its not guaranteed

I also noticed this, but to a much lesser extent, and I also saw others' ping (mainly AS players) change randomly throughout multiple days (stable 220 on one and unstable 270 on another without any clear reason for it to be happening). It's likely related to Cloudflare's attempts at load balancing connections from around the world by using multiple different routes, with some being noticeably worse and way more unstable than the others.

For example, it consistently gives me 3 routes that result in ~118-120 ms (very stable), ~124-126 or very unstable 140+ ms; on a different ISP it's either very consistent 136 or unstable and spiky 150+. You can force it to give you a more stable route by refreshing multiplayer list and rejoining a few times, and then checking your ping in tablist in the lobby.

I'd personally love if they also had a different proxy somewhere in NA East (preferably NYC, as it has the best routing from anywhere around the world) so that you could avoid using Cloudflare's questionable routing entirely. To be clear, I am not asking to move hosts, I am just asking for a proxy that would allow one to use their ISP's routes instead of CF Spectrum.

recently noticed that connection has been more stable and hit registration has improved, and the concept that Cloudflare is attempting to balance connections makes sense - however, i notice that in times of high player counts i receive more ping spikes, but ping is usually flawless on lower player counts. maybe this has something to do with cloudflare's load of managing a quantity of players' connections at the same time?

i think the confounding variable is time of day, not necessarily player activity. to confirm your memory, it is OVH in Beauharnois -- i don't think CF is colocated there, so last leg is probably always going via Ottawa. if you're connecting via Atlantic ocean cables, it's probably also passing through terrestrial NY/NJ and prone to high BGP switching regardless, adding ~30ms minimum

cloudflare's spectrum routing actually does outperform direct links from most of the regions we tested a while back. i'd be curious what sort of jitter you experience with your nearest edge node. roughly speaking, where are you geographically?

i'm in Melbourne, Australia

another thing i'll note is that there was a time last night where the server restarted and upon rejoining my ping spiked to 360ms instead of a stable 230ms, refreshed the server list and restarted my wifi just in case and yet i was sitting on that high ping (only on OCC) for close to an hour

still an issue

#

this consistently happens every day at random times - sudden switch from good gameplay & connection to being unplayable

#

when this happens, it sits at 300 and spikes to very high ping, while other servers are completely fine
