Before there’s any confusion tomorrow, I want to preface it tonight. For the US Open MIXED Doubles matches tomorrow, it is a different format.

What’s Different?
Regular Format: Best of 3 sets, first to 6, win by 2, tiebreaker at 6-6 or win 7-5.
USO Format: Best of 3 sets, first to 4, win by 1 tiebreaker at 4-4 or win 5-3.

Regular Format: 40-40 (Deuce) goes to Ad meaning next point would be Ad-40 and then they’d have to win another point while on Ad to win the game. ex. 40-40, Ad-40, Game Point-40
USO Format: There is NO Ad so if it’s 40-40, next point wins. ex. 40-40, Game Point-40.

Regular Format: Third set is a regular set, first to 6, win by 2, tiebreaker at 6-6, or win 7-5.
USO Format: Third set is a “SUPER TIEBREAKER” meaning that it’s tiebreaker rules but it’s first to 10 win by 2 in the tiebreak.

WTA/ATP use existing Tennis centers that have multiple courts already built allowing them to play multiple (8-12) matches at a time. If they were to switch to playing in stadiums, the logistics of converting them into Tennis courts would be too much to make it worth it revenue wise and they wouldn't be able to play as many matches at once so you'd be waiting a lot longer for these matches to play.

"Do they not check the weather"
Tennis tournaments have predetermined dates for almost every week of the year. If you cancel an entire day/week of a tournament due to rain, it not only puts those who signed up for that event to miss out on pay since they could've played elsewhere but it would also cause havoc for the remainder of the tennis schedule for the year.

Again, these matches are only postponed, not suspended. The lineups will stay active until they resume.

“Why are all the projections so high?”

• For MEN’S SINGLES ONLY, the format is a Best of 5 Sets instead of the traditional Best of 3 Sets. Meaning more games will be played, more opportunities for aces and higher projection lines for all of the men’s singles matches.
  Example: Straight set win with 1 break lead in each set with no Aces/Double Faults factored.
  Bo3: 6-4, 6-3: 21 Fantasy, 19 Total Games.

"Will _______ Reboot? Tennis PrizePicks Explained"

The only time anything will be DNP is if the match does not happen due to forfeit BEFORE the match. If there are any delays or etc, the projection will stay active until the match is played/resume.

There are NO Reboots for Tennis, even in a retirement/forfeit. The projections will then later be graded as if a complete game was played.
For example, Diaz retired at 2-2 in her match vs Polina Kudermetova, granting Polina the win. This would be graded ON PRIZEPICKS as if a complete game was played so Polina would be granted a 6-2, 6-0 win. It would impact the stats as so.
Total Games: 14 (Even though only 4 were actually played)
Total Games Won (Kudermetova): 12
Total Games Won (Diaz): 2
Fantasy (Kudermetova): 26

The only stats a retirement would have zero impact on are Double Faults, Aces, Break Points Won, and Total Tie Breaks.

Clarification on Tennis Squares Reboots/DNPs

The following squares are NOT eligible for Reboots/DNPs.

• Fantasy, Break Points, Aces, Double Faults, Total Games, Total Games Won.

Total Sets and Total Tiebreakers are two NEW squares that were recently added during the US Open of 2025. These squares are confusing due to the verbiage used by PrizePicks. In the Tennis section of Scoring Chart, it says, "In the event of a walkover, all projections for Total Tiebreaks/Total Sets will be DNP'd".

However, further down in the section, it says "Reboot: TENNIS squares are not eligible to be Rebooted under current PrizePicks policy." -- I don't know why an NBA player not being able to continue play due to injury is considered a "REBOOT" but a TENNIS player not being able to continue play due to injury is considered a "DNP". The veribage is entirely too confusing, especially with a "walkover" technically being the term used when a player forfeits BEFORE the match starts and a "retirement" is the term used when a player forfeits DURING the match.

So to recap:
If a match goes into the 5th set and you had a demon square for more than 4.5 Total Sets and a player forfeits in the 5th for whatever reason, that square will be rebooted/DNP'd.
If a match is in the 3rd set and you had a square for more than 3.5 Total Sets and a player forfeits in the 3rd, the square will be rebooted/DNP'd.
If a player forfeits and there was atleast one tiebreaker and you had more than 0.5 tiebreakers, that square will be rebooted/DNP'd.
If a player forfeits and there were no tiebreakers and you had more than 0.5 tiebreakers, that square will be rebooted/DNP'd.

TOTAL Tiebreakers and Sets get Reboot/DNP'd due to injury but TOTAL Games and Games won don't.
An injury in NBA/NFL/Etc. is a "REBOOT" but in Tennis it's a "DNP" (Did not PLAY)
"TENNIS SQUARES ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO FOR REBOOTS"

The wording and verbiage for these two squares along with their descriptions of what is a "REBOOT" and a "DNP" for Tennis currently is too hazy and contradicting to the point where I would avoid these squares. Play them at your own risk.

Match Format

Your typical Tennis MATCH - (Not GAME, this is important) - is a Best of 3 or for Grand Slam Tournaments, Best of 5 SET matches.

Each set will have a minimum of 6 GAMES to a maximum of 13 GAMES.

To win a SET, a player has to win 6 games and to win by a 2 GAME lead.

They can also win a SET when the score is 6-6 and they go into a tiebreaker in which the winning condition is now to win 7 POINTS and to win by a 2 POINT lead.

Occasionally, Doubles Matches will opt for a "Super Tiebreaker" format for their 3rd set instead of the normal format. This is the same format as a regular tiebreaker but instead of 7 POINTS, win by 2, it's 10 POINTS, win by 2.

Point System

To win a GAME (Not MATCH) in Tennis, you have to win four POINTS, 15-30-40-Game Point.

Occassionally, if the POINT score is at 40-40, this is referred to as "DEUCE". When this occurs, instead of going from 40 to Game Point, it will instead go from 40 to Advantage (Ad) then Game Point. If the player who has Ad loses the next point, it returns to 40-40 (Deuce).

The player who starts each point is the "server" and each point won by them is a "service point" on their "service game".

If the "returner" wins the GAME (not MATCH), that is called a "service break" or more commonly referred to as a "Break Point".

Stats

Here i'll explain what each stat/projection is on PrizePicks specifically. If new projections get added to PrizePicks, this will be updated. Most of this is self-explanatory. Fantasy Scoring will have it's own section located HERE.

Total Games: The total amount of GAMES played in a match, not POINTS. Tiebreakers always count as ONE game and in rare occurances, 3rd Set Super Tiebreakers count as ONE set and ONE game.

Total Games Won: The total amount of GAMES won for the person the projection is for.

Aces: Occurs when the server serves the ball inbounds and the returner makes zero contact with it resulting in a point for the server. If the returner makes contact on the initial return but it hits the net or lands out of bounds, it is NOT an Ace.

Double Faults: Occurs when the server serves the ball twice back to back and both attempts land out of bounds, resulting in a double fault and giving the returner a free point.

Break Points Won: Occurs when the returner wins the GAME (not match).

Fantasy Scores/Scoring

Fantasy scoring in Tennis is not like most sports and is very difficult to understand at first. Unlike most sports where the players start at 0 and typically only GAIN fantasy points, Tennis players start at 10 and their score flucuates very quickly.

Every player starts at 10 Fantasy and the scoring is as such.
GAME Won is +1
GAME Lost is -1
SET Won is +3
SET Lost is -3
Every Ace is +0.5
Every Double Fault is -0.5

The super tiebreaker in the 3rd set for doubles match’s count as ONE game and ONE set.

Example Scorelines
Player A wins his match, 6-4, 6-4 with 10 Aces and 4 Double Faults.
Player A starts with 10 Fantasy
Won 12 Games: +12 = 22 Fantasy
Lost 8 Games: -8 = 14 Fantasy

Reboots/DNPs & Delays

If a match gets delayed/postponed due to weather, the projection will stay active until they resume.

If there is a WALKOVER (Forfeit BEFORE the match starts), all projections for that match will be DNP'd.

If there is a RETIREMENT (Forfeit DURING the match), there will be NO Reboots for any projections aside from Total Sets/Tie Breaks. The winning player from a retirement will be awarded additional games aswell. Check below on how the projections will be graded if a retirement occurs.

Example. Match Score is 7-6, 2-0 and Player B (right side) retires.
Projections for Player A would be graded as such.
Total Games: 19, (7-6, 2-0 turns into 7-6, 6-0)
Total Games Won: 13 (See above)
Total Sets: REBOOTED

Delays Pt.2 / "When is --- Starting"

Tennis matches start times are just an estimation and could start earlier or much later from the original time posted. During a tournament, there are multiple matches scheduled on the SAME court. If the first few matches scheduled on the court take longer to finish, it delays everything else. Whether this is due to a tight match resulting in extra sets or delays due to weather/injuries/animals/fan disruptions.

Tournament Levels

There are about 5 levels to Tennis and the tour and knowing what each are will influence how you make your plays.

At lowest/introductory level are your Challengers and ITF tournaments. This is where those new to the tour or players coming from the collegiate scene start off at to build ranking points and make entry into higher level wildcard/qualifier spots. Very volatile in terms of results due to the low track record of players here or due to the inconsistency that's holding them back from making the main tour.

Next level and we're officially on the main tour is the ATP/WTA 250 events. You'll find a mix of challenger level and lower tier main tour level players here. Good enough to play on the main tour, not good enough to beat quality opponents consistently. Bit easier to predict on match winners due to wide skill gap between participants.

Then is the ATP/WTA 500s, more money and more points on the line, more quality opponents show up, pressure rises and where most players peak.

Next is the Masters 1000s, where the few seperate from the others and prove they are elite. Players participating and going deep in these tournaments are CONSISTENT.

Finally is my favorite, the highest level of tennis - Grand Slams, hosted only 4 times a year. Prize pool in the millions and ranking points up to 2000, this is when players give it their all.

Grand Slams / "Why is Total Games/Fantasy so high?"

I'll be referring to this section everytime during Grand Slam season because the question always arises.

"Normal" format in tennis is a Best of 3 set format. In Grand Slam tournaments are a Best of 5 set format. This is strictly only for ATP/Mens, WTA/Womens is always Bo3.

In a Bo3 format, the lowest game total and highest fantasy (without factoring in Aces and Double Faults) is 6-0, 6-0. This scoreline results in 12 Total Games and a Fantasy Score of 28.

Alternatively, the highest game total you can get in a Bo3 format is 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 = 39 Total Games.

In a Bo5 format, the lowest game total you can get is 18 at a scoreline of 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 resulting in a Fantasy Score of 37.
Alternatively, the highest game total you can get in a Bo5 format is 65 at a scoreline of 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6.

Simply put, Grand Slams require an extra set (sometimes two) to be played resulting in more games played and higher game totals. This also in turn gives players more opportunities to win by a larger amount of games and to accumulate more aces, boosting the fantasy score totals aswell.

DO NOT PANIC FADE HIGH PROJECTIONS DURING GRAND SLAM SEASON BECAUSE OF LAST 5 STATS.
Casuals always take the bait of L5 stats at the start of Grand Slams due to L5 stats being based off of Bo3 formats and not Bo5.

Court Surfaces / Court Speeds Pt.1

Probably the most important variable to look at when researching Tennis. There are three main court surfaces, Hard Courts, Clay Courts and Grass Courts. Depending on the surface, it will impact the ball speed, the height, the length of rallies, amount of double faults and aces, amount of service holds and break points and more. During clay season, you would want to back a player that has spent their entire life playing tennis on a clay surface but where most people mess up is when it's NOT clay season and they decide to back a clay courter in conditions that do not suit their playstyle.
-# (ex. Casper Ruud, Former World #2 has a win rate of 69.19% on clay but 37.5% on grass)

Hard Courts will be your most balanced surface and be the most commonly used surface on the tour. Great for those who have an all-around game and those who are solid all-court players. Think of Djokovic, Medvedev, Sinner, etc.
Indoor Hard Courts are a variant of Hard Courts that are usually on a faster pace due to no change in humidity/temperature/wind impacting play. This results in higher game totals, more tiebreakers, more service holds, more aces whilst seeing less double faults and break points.

Clay Courts are the slowest surface with the highest bounce resulting in dominance by players who have elite defense, fitness and consistency due to longer rallies and longer matches (time wise). Players such as Nadal, Alcaraz, Swiatek, etc.
Due to the clay surface, the ball loses speed and bounces higher, giving players more time to get to the ball and thus resulting in longer rallies/matches.
You will see an increase in break points, double faults and errors here whilst seeing a decrease in aces, service holds, tiebreaks and winners.

Grass Courts will be your fastest surface due to the low bounce, rewarding those with a big serve and a strike-first playstyle. Players such as Hurkacz, Isner and Mpetshi-Perricard who's biggest weapons are their serves. This leads to quicker points, shorter matches in terms of time but longer matches in terms of game totals due to the high rate of service holds.
You will see an increase in game totals, aces, service holds, tiebreaks and winners whilst seeing a decrease in break points, rally lengths, double faults and errors.

Court Surfaces / Court Speeds Pt.2

We've covered that Grass is the fastest speed, Hard is the medium speed and Clay being the slowest, there are exceptions to this rule.

Within each type of surface, there are also "Fast Hard/Clay/Grass" courts and "Slow Hard/Clay/Grass" courts.

Examples would be Gstaad, a CLAY court that most recently saw an Ace Rate of 13.9% and a surface speed rating of 1.05 - compare that to Indian Wells, a HARD court that saw an Ace Rate of 7.1% and a surface speed rating of 0.72. Even though most Hard courts are typically faster than Clay courts, it won't always be the case.

There are also external factors such as,
Humidity: More moisture on the ball causes it to become heavier and slow the pace.
Altitude: Higher altitude results in less air resistance which in turn makes the balls move faster.
Ball Type: Some tennis balls "fluff" up quicker than others, resulting in slower play while there are some engineered specifically to be "fast".
Wind: Just like humidity, weather aspects such as wind can also play a huge part in speeds. That is why indoor courts are generally "faster" due to no wind affecting the speed of balls.

Point of the message is that just because a court is hard/clay, doesn't always necessarily translate to fast/slow.

Recap:
Fast = Higher game totals, more aces, shorter points, less double faults and break points. Players with big serves flourish here, those who don't suffer.
Medium = All-courters shine, equal amounts of serve/return/consistency is a must.
Slow = Higher rate of break points, return points won, double faults and longer rallies while seeing a decrease in aces and occasionally lower game totals.

Player Archetypes

Knowing the player's playstyle and skill set is also crucial. I'll describe the most common ones you'll find.

The Servebot: These players biggest strength is their serve and forehands. Win most of their points off their serve and like to end points quickly. Very difficult to break these players serves and to win return points on. Dangerous on fast surfaces such as grass and indoor hard courts but become liabilities when they're on slower courts due to the lack of rally tolerance. The Grinder: These players win with elite speed, movement, fitness and consistency. They usually have the strongest mental and return games. They thrive on slower courts that allow them to wear out their opponent and force errors out of them. They have the ability to negate your offense and turn their defense into offense simutaneously. Biggest weaknesses are fast courts where they aren't able to set up their shots properly and the lack of a powerful serve to win them free points. Typically leads to higher break point totals and lower game totals.

The All-Courter: These players don't top the charts in terms of serve or return but they cover all aspects of the game with minimal weaknesses in their toolkit with high tennis IQ, versatility and consistency. They have a good enough serve to win the occassional free point, not as consistently as the Servebot but more than the Grinder. They have a good enough defense to stay competitive and make every point a fight. No matter what surface or speed they play on, they have the ability to win matches.

Research

There are a lot of variables to look at when researching Tennis. While it's not required to look at EVERYTHING, here's a few things I personally thinnk are important and look at.

1. Court surface and speeds. Explained more in-depth HERE. A player who is average on hard courts could be an elite talent on clay courts and vice versa.

2. Recent form. Tennis is a very streak-based sport where players are hot or cold for a long period of time. Have they been winning matches? Are they trending up or down? Are they barely winning or been dominant. How's the strength of draw they've faced?

3. H2H. A very common misconception is Player A > Player B > Player C so Player A > Player C which is wildly incorrect due to a number of variables. Each player has their own playstyle that could counter another players playstyle. Some might be brillant tacticians on clay courts but terrible on hard courts. It's very important to look at H2H and compare the strength/weaknesses directly. It is also mindful to ONLY compare H2H if it is on the SAME surface. A H2H record of Hard Court matches mean little to nothing for a Clay Court match.

4. Fitness/Fatigue. Tennis is (my opinion), the most physically and mentally draining sport. Explosive movements, long matches that could span 3+ hours with minimal breaks and a season that is roughly 11 months long with an off-season that is less than a month long for some players. Pair that with jet lag from traveling country to country with some players such as Taylor Fritz recording over 92,000 miles in a single season. Compared to the Chargers who will travel the most out of any team in the 2025 season at 37,000 miles, it puts a brutal strain on the body in the long-term. Fitness/Fatigue impacts matches more than anything LATER in the season.

Next Gen ATP Finals

This event features the brightest up and comers on the tour that are aged 20 years old or younger. The match format for this tournament is different compared to the tour norm so please read this before making your plays selections!

First to 4 games in a set - Tiebreak at 3-All
Instead of the tour norm of first to 6 + win by two or tiebreak at 6-6, here it is first to 4 + win by two or tiebreak at 3-3.

Regardling Alycia Parks vs Anhelina Kalinina Scoring

The scoreboard stopped working at 1-0 in the 2nd set and there were a lack of updates for a few moments. This caused there to be multiple incorrect stat scoring in the match with 3rd party trackers such as SofaScore, FlashScore, TNNS, etc.

The official statlines come from WTA, the official data-provider for Tennis for Women's Tennis. There will be NO further corrections outside of what I am going to mention below. Any complaining, crying, "PrizePicks is rigged", talk I see in chat will result in an automatic timeout.

Regarding Bucsa's Fantasy Score

It is NOT a DNP since Bucsa retired in the SECOND set, not the first set like what is required and stated in the Reboot/DNP policy. Bucsa was incorrectly DNP'd and was later corrected.

No it will not get DNP'd. Yes it is chalk. Contact support if you feel differently, crying about it here won't change anything.

WTA 125k Dubrovnik Update

It is currently raining in Dubrovnik so matches such as Hercog/Korpatsch are SUSPENDED. They will resume when the rain stops. Nothing will get DNP'd/Rebooted/Voided.
