This is something I have been thinking about since the moment Octolings were introduced.
Inklings are descendant from Squids.
Octolings are descendant from Octopus.
Both species are Cephalopods.
Both have Ink. Both Inklings and Octolings spray ink in the game and are very similar creatures besides some physical differences.
Inklings should be an overarching name for any creature that can transform from a humanoid to an animalistic form and sprays ink.
It would be way easier and logical to make sense of what exactly these characters are and what they are based on.
The amount of times I have heard as Octoling characters being referred to as Inklings is really frustrating, but also understandable that people make that mistake. As the name Inkling doesn't really have anything to make it clear that it only refers to the squid-based characters... rather that it refers to ink-based characters.
Even weirder is that Octolings were already introduced in Splatoon 1 together with inklings and were even supposed to potentially be made playable then.
So it not really is a thing where the name "octoling" was just an afterthought after Inklings were already established.
I think Inkling would work perfectly as a name for all Cephalopod based characters in splatoon.
With Squidlings and Octolings being names to differenciate Inklings by what exact species they are based on.
You could even expand this infinitely.
Nautilings? (Gnarly Eddy)
Cuttlelings? (I know the issues with craig cuttlefish here)
Hell you could even remove my own rule that all inkling characters need to be based on Cephalopods and just say ANY character that sprays ink and can transform between humanoid and animal form can be an inkling.
Salmonlings?
Anemolings? (Harmony/Annie)
There even are so many other characters we see on the Album covers that could potentially be Inkling creatures.
I think this could be really cool.
