#Inklings should be called Squidlings. Inklings should be an overarching name.

This is something I have been thinking about since the moment Octolings were introduced.

Inklings are descendant from Squids.
Octolings are descendant from Octopus.
Both species are Cephalopods.
Both have Ink. Both Inklings and Octolings spray ink in the game and are very similar creatures besides some physical differences.

Inklings should be an overarching name for any creature that can transform from a humanoid to an animalistic form and sprays ink.

It would be way easier and logical to make sense of what exactly these characters are and what they are based on.
The amount of times I have heard as Octoling characters being referred to as Inklings is really frustrating, but also understandable that people make that mistake. As the name Inkling doesn't really have anything to make it clear that it only refers to the squid-based characters... rather that it refers to ink-based characters.
Even weirder is that Octolings were already introduced in Splatoon 1 together with inklings and were even supposed to potentially be made playable then.
So it not really is a thing where the name "octoling" was just an afterthought after Inklings were already established.

I think Inkling would work perfectly as a name for all Cephalopod based characters in splatoon.
With Squidlings and Octolings being names to differenciate Inklings by what exact species they are based on.
You could even expand this infinitely.
Nautilings? (Gnarly Eddy)
Cuttlelings? (I know the issues with craig cuttlefish here)

Hell you could even remove my own rule that all inkling characters need to be based on Cephalopods and just say ANY character that sprays ink and can transform between humanoid and animal form can be an inkling.
Salmonlings?
Anemolings? (Harmony/Annie)
There even are so many other characters we see on the Album covers that could potentially be Inkling creatures.

I think this could be really cool.

squidlings inherently implies squids.
which octopuses are not .

  • cuttlefish is not a cuttlefish that’s his name (though cuttlefish idols do exist
  • gnarly eddy is indeed a cephalopod but he cannot transform because he does not produce ink
  • salmonlings wont happen
  • annie and harmony aren’t a special case they’re just humanoid sea anemone in the same way we have long spindly humanoid sea urchins
#

we also have confirmation that most bands do have an inkling/octoling member, there’s actually only 3 battle bands that entirely lack an inkling/octoling member (riot act, Hightide Era, and bottom feeders)

  • Thats literally what I wrote in my post
  • We dont know if gnarly eddy can transform or produce ink. Thats just something you are saying without it ever being mentioned anywhere. Even if Nautilus dont produce ink IRL, I dont remember Salmon producing Ink IRL either. In the end they can make up some shit in a videogame about anthropomorphic sea creatures.
  • I never implied or wished for them, it was just an example for what this name change could open the doors to, an easy way to expansion of the Inkling-creature catalog. Only used it because its popular.
  • Again, an example like I mentioned for the Salmonlings. These two being unable to transform was never mentioned anywhere. It would be very easy to add this ability of some sort of transformation for these guys without causing any lore problems.
