Hi, I'm looking to install some additional PCI cards into by AFF8080 system. I have two AFF8080s (with I/o Expansion) in a two-node HA. I believe I should be able to shutdown one node at a time to install the PCIE cards without any downtime. Do I need to do a manual takeover before shutting down the node? My plan was to just do manual takeover from the classic GUI, then shut the node down from the new GUI.

Yes, you can takeover the node, and then add the hardware. You would probably want to disable auto-giveback. Doing the takeover will put the node in a state where it is safe to power down the node. Just wait until the console connection says "Waiting for Giveback...", and then you can turn off the power and add your PCI cards.

OK great! I will disable auto-giveback and then do a manual takeover. Do i select disable auto-giveback on the node that I want to shut down?

Also, from what I can see, the shutdown procedure after the takeover is complete is unplugging the no-longer-active node. Is that correct?

it does not matter if you disable auto-giveback as the system will not do a giveback if the other node is still down. other than that the plan sounds about right

Great, thank you for the info. Since I don't have direct access to the NetAPP (it's in a remote datacenter, and we're using their RemoteHands), I will disable auto-giveback, since I will need the unit to stay in takeover mode until they pickup my ticket. I will execute the takeover tonight, and the datacenter will be able to unrack and install the PCI cards into the offline node tomorrow morning.

Update, for anyone else who stumbles across this thread. The above method worked great. Installing 16G FC cards into slots 5 and 6 on expansion module.

I did everything from the Classic Ontap GUI (9.7). This is a dual chassis/node HA.

  1. Disabled auto-giveback on node 2
  2. Had Node 2 takeover node 1.
  3. Turned off PSU's on Node 1.
  4. Removed Cables, unracked filer head, installed pcie cards in expansion bay (couldn't remove when in rack due to clearance issues), re-racked, reinstalled cables, turned on PSU's
  5. Manual giveback from GUI, re-enabled auto-giveback.

No service disruption. Will repeat for Filer Head 2 on Tuesday. Thanks!!!
