#Issues with SSD Model: MZ-IWS1T9B

I have a refurbished HP servers ProLiant DL380 Gen9 with the RAID controller Smart Array P840 and new SSD disks Model:MZ-IWS1T9B
The problem: SSD disks are not seen by the controller from time to time

#

After I pull out and insert the failed disk back, it appears in the system and the array begins to recover. After a while, the disk disappears again.
I hope that this is a known problem and it will be enough just to update the firmware of the disk. I have registered on the site netapp.com and now I have a "guest" level profile and cannot download the firmware I need

#

this is how it looks from iLO

That's a Samsung SSD, perhaps you can get firmware from them. NetApp only supports disks used in NetApp-branded hardware.

I fail to see what this has to do with ONTAP? It's an HP server, a Samsung disk, ... Even if you're running ONTAP Select on that box, the compatibility between server and SSD is not handled by the application, you should maybe try and find something on HP's website?

It’s a NetApp OEMed disk, but you can’t upgrade the firmware without ONTAP

in the past you could simply upload the .LOD files to a SCSI disk using Linux's scsi-utils, but that might not be possible anymore. In any case, I think if you don't use the disk in a NetApp system, you probably don't want the NetApp custom firmware but rather the original vendor firmware?

I just want those drives not to vanish from the system )
All advice are greatly appreciated

I have successfully used dozens of NetApp disks on other systems, from FC disks to SAS, SATA and even NVMe. Never had I had any problems similar to what you're experiencing. I would guess that you have either bad cabling, or that your HBA is broken or needs a firmware update. Have you tried with a different HBA? There are multiple reports on the internet of people having similar problems with that brand of HBA (e.g. https://serverfault.com/questions/958650/hp-p840-hdd-raid-5-many-strange-drive-failures)

Actually I have 3 such servers and each one has these disks(a couple for mirroring) and p840 controllers . I have a spare p840 and tried it too. The results are the same.
and thank you for the article you sent but that's not really my case - they used HDDs and their failure was "Write retries failed" whereas I have these issues with SSDs and the disks are just disappearing from the system..

Sorry, no idea. Reddit /r/homelab might be a better place to ask.

Hello there!
Unfortunately I still haven't solved my problem yet.
One possible solution, which would not require any additional investment from my employer, is to update the firmware of the disks to the latest version.
I was told above that there is a Samsung drive hiding under the Netapp logo in my disks
I tried to see what I could do with it using the Samsung software. Nothing came out of it.
This is what one of my disks looks like.

#

It has the F/W NA01 firmware version written on it. The current firmware is F/W NA04.

#

Can you please tell me where I can get firmware F/W NA05 or higher (if available), as well as instructions and software to update my disks.
I have a total of such 16 disks.

The latest firmware from NetApp for these disks is NA04, so not much to update here. Don't know where to get Samsung firmware updates if there are any.

hmm.. that's strange..
cause I asked that on one of the stores about these disks and they said this:

Actually NA05 is latest. We would update any drives before shipping to latest.
the store is https://www.expresscomputersystems.com/

can you tell me the release date for NA04?

There are several different X439A disks, NetApp source them from different vendors. Yours should be one of these since it's a Samsung SM1633:
X439_S16331T6AMD (NA04,NA03,NA01,NA00)
X439_S163A1T6ATD (NA04,NA01)

None have the NA05.

#

rel-date for NA04 of X439_S16331T6AMD should be from around end of 2017, for NA04 of X439_S16431T6ATD around beginning 2021

strange, I can find an NA05 for the X439A but for completely different models 🤔 yes, it is confusing...
