Hi there! You need a SAS HBA - while QSFP is used for both 6G SAS from NetApp and networking from other vendors, SAS and Ethernet are significantly different protocols

Got it thanks !

We need to know which IOM modules are in the shelf. IOM6 or IOM12?

gaunt ledge
#

@steep canyon make any progress? This is something I went through recently and it can be a little tricky to get the right pieces.

gaunt ledge
#

You're gonna want one of these for your server. Finding the appropriate cables is what we need to know the IOM6 or IOM12 module number for

Hello I apologize for the delay but I had to wait for items to arrive.

Following up :

DS2246 I have 2 IOM6 modules.

I have 2 servers at home : HP DL380 GEN8

I purchased the following card : P421/2GB FBWC 6GB 2-ports External Sas Controller (631674-B21) - Still waiting to receive the card (standby)

The issue that I have at the moment is the following :

I have a T430 poweredge. I purchased the DELL PERC H830 card.

I purchased the cabling : 2 X External MINI SAS HD SF-8644 to QSFP. Will I need 2 exactly or just one ?

Unfortunately, in my controller I can't the disks from the DS2246.

There is no LED activity between both units.

Would you have any idea what I can do ?

Thanks!

PERC is a Raid controller, not an HBA. One does not necessarily do the other. If you go into the BIOS of the RAID controller you should see the drives (pending things being cabled up correctly).

When you get the P421, it is also a raid controller, but has modes... make sure you flip it to "HBA Mode = ON" which will disable the onboard RAID. Not sure if the PERC controller has something similar. D-E-L-L is a 4-letter word around here. 😉

I don't know why but in the IDRAC I am able to switch to HBA or RAID. I tried both options and I still can't see my drives. Here's the wiring also. QSFP to MINI SAS SF-8644

I don't see any DS2246 shelf in your photos. Inside your chassis there are 2x FAS2552 controllers. I don't think you can use this like a JBOD or persuade ONTAP to somehow give you the disks. (not 100% sure though)
Either get 2x DS2246 IOM6 modules. (IOM12 is not needed and you already got the QSFP to MiniSAS-HD cables.)

Or even better: Find a suitable console cable and connect to the controller. If you're lucky (and the installed disks came with the chassis) ONTAP is still alive and there are licenses available. (If it's from work maybe someone saved them.) If yes, forget your SAS connection, properly connect your server via Ethernet and... welcome to ONTAP. 😉

I have 24 x 1.2 TB in this machine. The license are transferred to the new NETAPP server at work. They were throwing out away these machines. No license unfortunately. I know for a fact that ONTAP license are really expensive so I was thinking going with TRUENAS and use this storage system for it.

gaunt ledge
#

Oh yea, you dont have a shelf, you've got a full on storage system!

steep canyon
#

Is there a way to use this storage system with the setup I'm having at the moment or am I missing something ?

gaunt ledge
#

Why would you want to? You've got a fully independent storage system. No need for a server.

#

Forget the headaches of ZFS and TrueNAS. You've got the best NAS on the market.

#

You've got (4) SFP+ on each controller for 10GbE. Native. Just hook it up to any 10Gb switch, and then stick a $150 PCIe X540 10Gb adapter in your server.

steep canyon
#

So you said earlier about getting a console cable and connect to the unit.

#

So my DELL PERC H830 is not gonna work then ?

gaunt ledge
#

Flippy have you ever managed storage arrays before?

#

or just local disks?

steep canyon
#

Well at work they have all this stuff already installed so no I didn't had the opportunity to try this with my setup at home.

#

I would say no.

#

I do have a storage array in my server with 8 disks. I'M just confused to make this work with the DS2246

gaunt ledge
#

OK excellent that gives us the right perspective to approach here. Nothing wrong with it. We just need to completely reset the conversation, because you have a wayyyyy better solution natively on that box that anything you could hang off a server with a PERC controller.

#

First, you do not have a DS2246.

#

This is what the back of a 2246 looks like.

#

It is a dumb JBOD shelf that can be connected to servers or other NetApp storage systems running our storageOS, called ONTAP.

#

What you have is actually one of those storage systems. So not only do you have the disks, but also the horsepower and operating system to act as an independent NAS. You don't need the other separate storage server anymore.

If the licenses are missing, he does though 🙃

Optimism, OG. Optimism.

steep canyon
#

In my T430 Dell Poweredge. I'm running this machine for school.

I have like 30 VM on this machine.

28 cpu, 56 threads.

135 GB Ram.

I have a PERC 730 Raid Controller with 8 disks, something like 12 TB

I was hoping to connect to the storage system to extend the storage or testing purposes.

plain raven
#

you can use it for that, as long as you have a) licenses and b) use iSCSI, FC or NFS as storage protocol. You cannot use SAS to connect servers to it

gaunt ledge
#

What if you could just move all that stuff onto a standalone storage system?

#

Let the server focus on being a server.

#

Do you have a Cisco console cable around anywhere by chance?

steep canyon
#

Ethernet to ethernet cisco console cable ?

gaunt ledge
#

Grab at least one (or two) of these.

steep canyon
#

I'll have to check at work if we have one like this.

#

I appreciate your help all I don't have a lot of hair on my head since the last few weeks 😅

gaunt ledge
#

No problem, it's about to get real easy. You were just going about it the wrong way.

steep canyon
#

I purchased the console cable. In the meantime I did a draft of the what I have at the moment. Open to any cool ideas.

#

What was my plan. At this rate I don't know anymore since our talk yesterday. This particular network that you see is the guest room in my apartment. I work in my living room I have my computer with the ISP. How am I communicating with the guest room. I'm using PoE Inline. What was I hoping to accomplish. I was looking to use a number of disks with my DELL and HP Server.

nova herald
#

you will (should?) only be able to attach it to one of your servers - the HP or the Dell

#

and I think you mean PLE (powerline ethernet), not POE (power over ethernet). You'll also likely soon find it sucks, I have previously taped thin cat-6 cable to skirting boards for this sort of deployment.

plain raven

#

Oh right, yes..

steep canyon
plain raven
#

you cannot buy licenses alone, they are only sold with a system that has an active support contract

MY boss confirmed I received the cable. I'll be heading for work later to get it. What will be my assignment Sire @gaunt ledge ?

quaint relic
#

Connect it here, use 9600 baud, hit that on-off switch and pray 🙏

#

oh and remove the SAS-cables you have connected to your server

steep canyon
#

It's working I'M in and since I did a lot of Netapp Simulator I'll be able to work my way into it.

First thing to do:

Node> node run -node * -command sysconfig -r

Show us that. It’ll tell us everything we need to know what you’re workin with 🙂

plain raven

also, license show 😉

Hello everyone. An old friend from school showed up and helped me. I'm up and running. Would like to thanks everyone who helped me out with this.
