Hmm, could be busy disks.
Oh wait it's FAS500f. It's still SSD.
Maybe performance issue on SG side? Have you tried the object-store profiler?
Will have a butchers
for netapp support site, is there a way to manage OTP instead of using email are their other options that can be configured that im not seeing?
Take a look at the Identity Federation section near the bottom of this FAQ:

oh nice perfect thanks
Do we have anyone here in Kansas with storm damage tonight?
All good here, just waiting for power to come back on still. Was about 5+ miles east of us. Andover YMCA got the worst of it it would appear.
That seems a bit close for comfort. Hopefully everyone else is in okay shape too.
This was shared on our local news’ Facebook page. Looks like a few lost their homes also 😢

First light drone video shows dozens of homes completely destroyed, cars thrown and a path of destruction through Andover, Ks from a violent tornado.
This shows the YMCA you mentioned. Lots of homes destroyed. Huge damage path.
Yes, far worse than I thought last night.
Tornado with violent motion tearing through Andover, Kansas close range Team Dominator with drone airborne. Very concerned about extreme damage
Ignore Reed Timmer’s yelling.

AJ you're here in Wichita? It was scary but thankfully no one was seriously hurt and no fatailities.
I am indeed. Much agreed. It’s a miracle nobody was with the destruction it left in its wake. Hoping all goes well this evening too.
I think the rain this morning put a cap on whatever will happen. The HRRR model looks iffy at best.
Yesterday it looked a lot more favorable for something to develop.
Yeah another possiblity today 😦
This is an experimental product, but when it does get it right, it does pretty good
That’s not a good sign… incoming.

Hi all....
I'm a DRM and Storage guy, but have just a tiny experience with NetApp. And even what I did was already more then 10 years ago.... So I want to do some self-training and just start with with the beginning, but am drowning in the amount of information. The time that NetApp was "just NetApp" seems long gone 😄
Can someone please help me with proper self-training material?
Do you perfer to read? There is things like TRs and docs out there. or are you looking for more videos/youtube?

Hello I have a problem I bought a Netapp FAS 3240 with two Netapp DS4243
But unfortunately I don't know how to make them work at the base I wanted to take the Netapp DS4243 and use them with another server could someone help me please?

How I Create a SnapMirror Relationship in 7-Mode? 1 node To Production 1 node To Backup!
This is a good starting point:
https://library.netapp.com/ecmdocs/ECMP1196991/html/GUID-198C5B49-F01D-4DF0-AE73-31C3031456DB.html
Before initiating SnapMirror operations, you must enable the appropriate licenses on the source and destination systems. Also, you need to specify the destination systems that can access the source system for updates.
Quick question: MFA for ONTAP ist still "only" possible via SAML für System Manager and public key + password for SSH?
and service-processor is still excluded right? So no possibility to secure the SP with MFA
just checked with 9.11.1RC1 and this is still the only way: security login create -user-or-group-name test -application service-processor -authentication-method password -second-authentication-method none
Can't use any other authentication-method than password for application service-processor... 😦
Hello! New to this discord, please excuse anything. I support Spot PC on the backend (though I am a little familiar with the rest of it as well).
Howdy.
Welcome!
Hello hello, thank you!
Congrats on the GA launch!
Hey guys, Thanks for having me.. I picked up a ds4243 with iom3 controllers no disks for 400$, found 2 iom6 controllers and have this thing working very well fully stocked with 18+ 8TB drives.... I'm running True nas.Would i get any benefits to configure communication with the IOM6 controller? I called netapp and was met with a very very rude customer service agent that said my serial # wasn't found and he couldn't help or answer any questions 😦 I am very sorry if this is the wrong area to ask.
i'd ask in reddit.com/r/homelab for that
Sorry they were rude, but support would not cover anything like that.
Did you get a case number for your call? or did it not progress that far?
never got that far
i gave serials from shelf and iom6 both said they were not valid serial 😦
Those aren't tracked by support.
everything is working very well i just wasnt sure if i would gain anything from talking to the iom6 controller direct
Again, sorry very very new to this equipment
no prob. when stuff like that is bought it's used/out of support etc.
Gotcha.
NetApp Shelves are JBODs. so they can be used like that, but NetApp does not support that.
they are conencted to netapp controllers running ontap software.
Ahhh so right now i have it connected via sas cable to a ls card in a dell server running truenas and it is amazing.. not one hiccup
There ya go. but the IOM is just there for SAS.
i will just ignore doing anything with the controller and leave it as it
not sure I follow there, you said you just have a DS4243.
there is a RJ45 on the back of the IOM, but that is for ONTAP's ACP - Alternate Control Path
🙂 thats what started my question today
i am not using anything but the sas connection from shelf to LSI card in my dell server running TrueNas
That's how a lot of folks on /r/homelab do it
Roger and Thank you for your time.
no prob
google "NetApp FAS shelf cabling". and you can see how it's connected to an actually netapp system.
Gotcha.. I got the IOM6 from ebay with no documentation... everything so far has been 100% plug n play and ran into no issues at all.. i have a bonded dual 10GB connection on truenas so i am good. my curiosity of the network jacks on the back to maybe controller the ear piercing fans would have been nice lol
ah, i've heard that before. as far as I know it's proprietary from ONTAP to control fan speeds.
OMG tyvm 🙂
🙂 good luck
Good afternoon how i get more space in my disks in simulate 9 (Vmware Workstation) ?
Thank you!
Are you trying to add more disks? If so, then this article might help you out - https://community.netapp.com/t5/Developer-Network-Articles-and-Resources/Adding-disks-to-a-Data-ONTAP-8-1-1-Simulator/ta-p/86240

Trying to figure out how to schedule an autosupport to run daily that includes the 7z file to have as a backup of the NetApp configuration if the system ever needed to be rebuilt and we did not have access to NetApp support
you can setup ontap to do a remote backup config file -> https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap/system-admin/commands-manage-config-backup-schedules-reference.html
Write a cron job on a Linux host to SSH in via keyfile and run the autosupport invoke -uri file:///...
We have to operate as if NetApp will not be able to assist with the cluster rebuild on completely new hardware in a dark site. Is is possible for us to extract all the data we would need to do so without NetApp support?
It's a 7z file so yeah.
There are a few bits (like CCMA perf data) which require an internal only binary.
Oh cool, is it the same 7z file that AUSP sends out via email?
Yeah.
nice
We'll just back that up in that case
Is it dark as in you aren't permitted to leave with the 7z files in any method?
Or just dark as in no internet available?
Dang ok. I'm a strong proponent that if you can get HTTPS even through a proxy please do.
Government systems are a bit different and there are some customers who run dark sites.
It's highly recommended to upload the cluster configuration backup off the cluster, that way the configuration backup can always be used to restore the exact identity information for all the nodes in the cluster.
If the system got blown up completely and we use the configuration backup file to rebuild, does it essentially recreate the SVMs, LIFs, broadcast domains, etc. Pretty much everything we need to be able to start mirroring the volumes back from the DR systems?
Hmm, could we specify our own email as the partner email to get the 7z file daily? We need as many copies of the config as possible.
Yes, although you will probably have to recreate the actual volumes (that is what the information bullet in the documentation was indicating about configuration discrepancies). The restore of the configuration basically just does that...it doesn't recreate the actual volumes.
Hello guys im making a project for school and i got some questions. I did rack the netapp filer and connected my laptop to the managment port so i can use the console serial over putty. My problem is that i dont see the "login" on the console do u maybe know why ?
and how do i update / install ontap.
And what kind of console cable and adapter are you using?
Helle Guys Im Simulate Data ONTAP 9.7 In VMWare, How I Create SVM? Im Trying And I Got error On CiFS Protocol! Help Me PLZ
what's the error?
Can I Send a picture?
looks like it's trying to join a domain and can't see it. do you have a domain? or is it a work group? https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap/smb-config/create-server-workgroup-task.html
I Have A Domain!
One More Question! My Cluster Have 2 Nodes And Only Show ImetroclusterProd-02!! Why?
make sure the networking is set up right and ONTAP can ping the AD / DNS server.
not sure on your second part.. what's cluster show look like
The Ping With Imetroclusterprod And AD/DNS is Alive !
from the ONTAP SIM?
Remove Imetroclusterprod-02 ? From Cluster
@mild hazel Ty so much for Help!! I solved My problem. the 2 nodes had the same serial number
Hi, new here - anyone know why the ONTAP 9.9 (and up) SIM uses much more CPU resources when idle (on both VMware ESXi and Workstation)?
Hi, Im having the same issue when setting up a metro Cluster on Version 6.9. Maybe the SQL Server?
Hey @violet arch I know there are a few folks on this Discord whom are familiar with the ONTAP Simulator, but having said that you may get better luck by posting on the related Community Forum - https://community.netapp.com/t5/Simulator-Discussions/bd-p/simulator-discussions
You can also use the freemium version of CVO in Cloud Manager. Free up to 500GB
How I Consolidate 6 SVM Into 2 Svm?
Example: What I'm trying To say is Following: Imagine that you gave 2 SVMs inside a Cluster Controller and each SVMs Has A Volume, Is It Possible to turn The 2 svms into 1 svm with the volumes Of each Previous Svms???? Help me please
The rehost scenario to move volumes between SVMs is covered in this documentation. There are different scenarios depending on protocol.
How about that Broadcom/VMware announcement? 👀
Yeah.... bout that. More opinions to come after I hear about their plans for vsphere license portability to AVD, VMC on AWS, etc.
It’s either going to be amazing or terrible. Nothing in between
Hey , i'm a bit desperate by now. I have two NetApp Clusters with peering and a Hyper-V Cluster with two hosts. LUNs are connected over FCP. As long as i'm working with a single NetApp cluster everything is working fine. As soon as i enable sm-bc (Volume with 2 LUNS) and the sync is finished the cluster can't access the CSVs anymore. The disks still show up, but i can't bring them online. MPIO seems to work fine too. Igroups are working too. I can access the disk and convert it to a csv, when i create a LUN on the second storage cluster. Any chance somebody can help me here?
VMware over NetWare?
Thank You So Much !!! This Document Helped Me Solve The Problem!
hello everybody, just a quick question. we have an order with netapp for a storage system. we are given the so number and i would like to track the order. i remember there was a site where we used to put the so number (if i remember correct) and we would be able to monitor the delivery process
I believe you'll need a NetApp support account to login - https://mysupport.netapp.com/site/systems/order-status
Generally it’s not through our site, but your reseller should be able to help track it
Guess Unca' Larry wanted in on the news cycle too
I'm so not thrilled about it myself.
I just hope vExpert stays around, I have purpose for these 6 ESXi 7.0 hosts in my living room. 😛
that would be interesting; but nope, please no.
ya that's what I fear, a nest within a nest within another nest. 🙄
I picked the perfect time to leave.
@severe citrus you put one and one together now? 😛
Haha yeah
@ NYC VMware VMUG UserCon. 🙂
anyone fancy or have experience on parallel filesystems?
Hi everyone, I'm facing an issue while using fsecurity command on my 7-mode netapp. Does someone has already solved this :
netapp> fsecurity apply /vol/vol_C/.../security.conf -c
fsecurity: /vol/vol_C/.../security.conf (Line 2): Unable to parse the task.
fsecurity: /vol/vol_C/.../security.conf (Line 3): Unknown security type.
fsecurity: Unable to parse the definition file, quitting.
netapp>
Here is the content of the security.conf :
cb56f6f4
1,0,"/vol/vol_C/.../test.txt",0,"D:P(A;CIOI;0x1f01ff;;;Everyone)"
Thanks for any help, and sorry if it's not the right place to ask
Where is your security.conf file located?
It's located on one of my volumes on the netapp. I've chosen one without any restrictions because of the documentation I've read. Are there any restrictions about it ?
netapp on discord
Welcome!
is everyone here a netapp employee or customers also ?
No, this is a public open space intended for end users. The staff here are volunteers that want to help and be a part of it.
And you? Are you an employee or end user? 🙂

i see u have many youtube videos , very usefull
Hey all, my supervisor received an email from a NetApp mailing list last night (email address is mailto:NetAppCustomerCommunique@netapp.com). The email was regarding FW: NetApp Support Bulletin - SU501 [Impact: High] Impact of Microsoft CVE-2021-42287 fixes on ONTAP 9. Any idea how I can add my email to this mailing list? I googled it and came up short and was hoping someone here could help
Go to mysupport.netapp.com log in with your account, click on the profile icon, go to Email Subscriptions, enable email subscriptions and then select Product Communique or End of Availability depending on what emails you want
Hello All - In ONTAP cli, What is the difference between security login role create and rest-role create?
security login rest-role create command creates an access-control role. An access-control role consists of a role name and a api to which the role has access.
so you can limit the login to run a specific API set.
i.e
cluster1::> security login rest-role create -role admin -api /api/storage/volume -access all -vserver vs1.example.com
The security login role create command creates an access-control role. An access-control role consists of a role name and a command or directory to which the role has access.
So specific API vs specific command or command tree.
check the show command in the docs and you can see examples.
Can I create a user who has access only to rest API and all API calls?
Yep! If you just want that, security login create with -application ontapi
Anyone know why the max LUN size limit has only been raised to 128TB for ASA systems? Why is that not possible with AFF/FAS?
Is this some constraint because of NAS workloads?... I don't understand it... last I checked even with ONTAP 9.11 there's the 16TB limit 😦
TR-4515 states that with the increase added in 9.8 they expect it to be added to AFF/FAS in a later release, but it hasn't yet as you mentioned.
AFF "disables" NAS, allowing for larger luns? That's how I understood it anyway.
ASA does, yes
I finally found the problem : convert the security.conf file un ANSI, change carriage return to Windows style (CR+LF) and leave a blank line at the end of the file.

Part number: "AFF-A800-100-C", Description: "AFF A800,HA,CTL,Encl,AC PS,100G,-C" - is this a single controller or HA pair? I.e. if building A800 HA Pair, do I need one AFF-A800-100-C or two?
Check the HWU, this should be only the enclosure/chassis not the controllers themselves
It's a pity that there is no HWU app for mobile... (and the old one is gone) 😔
@OGI, I think "X90001XA Chassis,no PSU,no PCM,no Fan,w/MP,A800" is the enclosure", AFF-A800-100-C is the controller. Or controllers?
Information from: https://www.netapp.com/how-to-buy/contracts/california/
AFF-A800-100-C
AFF A800,HA,CTL,Encl,AC PS,100G,-C
is the HA pair + chassis
and yes. The part # X90001XA is the AFF A800 blank chassis.

Thank you!
Hello, I have 2 NetApp FAS2720 and wondering where can I check for the warranty information and EOS information of the product
Does anyone know where to check this?
Hi @hollow raft you can look up the hardware end of support dates by looking up the model FAS system on our Hardware Universe site, hwu.netapp.com. Warranty generally is 5 years from purchase date. However, if you have a support site account and this system is registered to the account you can look up the specific warranty end date and support entitlement information there (mysupport.netapp.com).
Everyone get to see the new images from the NASA JWST this morning?
No
Just clean it up when you are done.
Wow those pictures are amazing. We barely understand what's out there.
Here's the 1st from that they unveiled yesterday. For perspective, this was described as "a single grain of sand on your fingertip held at arm's length." That's how much of the sky is in this single image.
This will be the new "deep field" image of the entire universe in coming years.
You can even see the bending of gravity in there. Fun fact: The original deep field image from Hubble held the shutter open for 22 Days. This was 1 day on JWST.
this is a pretty good vid on it. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1mObQX7NN8&ab_channel=k2qogir
The recent James Webb Space Telescope(JWST) guide camera's test image looks really similar to Hubble's deep fields, which are my favorite. I decided to take a long exposure to the same target to see what my telescope can see and compare it to JWST's image. I found one really faint galaxy 26-32 million light-years away, and a cute planetary nebul...
using the calibration image
yeah, that's a detail a lot people don't realize
This isn’t the farthest back we’ve observed. Non-infrared missions like COBE & WMAP saw the universe closer to the Big Bang (~380,000 years after), when there was only microwave background radiation, but no stars or galaxies. Webb sees a few 100 million years after the Big Bang.

that's a pretty decent article.

the JWST really is the most expensive wallpaper and meme generator ever.
I wish the world could put their petty conflicts aside and explore the stars and grow the human society. Maybe I just long for a Star Trek like civilization.
Those few epsoides of DS9 at least have my hopefull that we're on the right track at least? 🤷🏻♂️
Looking at the upgrading NetApp hardware by moving storage guide, don't see ONTAP 9.9.1 as an option. Goal is to replace a 2650 with 8300 by converting the 2650 to a shelf. Are head swaps not supported after 9.8?
Same doc. When converting a shelf and doing a swap by moving storage, no mention of 9.9.1
Yeah that seems like an error
