BF3, BF4, BF1, BF5..
Happy Monday, folks! As an update, we've officially applied to be official, and hopefully that doesn't take too long. We're going to begin opening the doors a bit more, so if you have other communities you're a part of, esp users and partners, please drop them an invite using this link (for now): https://discord.gg/NPNCkZjyy8
Again, if you're an employee or A-team member, please @/DM myself or one of the mods so we can classify you accordingly! 🙂
Welcome to all the recent joins over the past 24 hours or so! What's been your impression so far?
Don’t be bashful! Say hi and let us know what you do
What's up everybody? For those that don't know me - I'm Donny, I work at an electronics manufacturing company in Wisconsin. I do infrastructure stuff - NetApp, various VMware things, Citrix NetScaler, etcetera. I'm on the A-Team and I am a Wisconsin VMUG Leader. Outside of work, I do lots of outdoor stuff (camping, kayak/SUP, mountain biking), smoke copious amounts of meats, and play retro video games as time allows (I'm replaying the Metroid series in advance of Metroid Dread being released). Don't do much on Discord personally, but I can see this being a really cool platform for partners and customers (like me) to get access to NetApp resources they might not otherwise have.
Welcome Donny! Glad to have ya! We’re pushing boundaries and trying some new stuff in here for Insight this year too
👋
I realize many of you might not know who I am, and that's fair- I'm Drew! Being Drew is a full-time job, but so is my role as Community Manager here at NetApp. I promise I won't plug community.netapp.com as often as Linus plugs LTT store, but it probably will happen occasionally. What I will promise though, is that we will try to make sure each of you has a great experience here- whether on Discord or with NetApp in general. My focus is on the Digital Support experience (think KB, Community, and Support Site), but certainly isn't limited to those areas. There is a growing team of NetApp Staff who undoubtedly are interested in helping however they can.
I joined
in January 2020, after 10 years in enterprise networking support, network lab management, and community management. That came after spending four years in NC State's Computer Engineering program before changing my mind, and ultimately graduating with a B.S. in Meteorology ⛈️
Outside of all this, I appreciate good games to play, good food to eat, and good beers to drink. I love to travel and am looking forward to meeting you when things are normal again. 🍻
Wait wait wait… meteorology?! How did I not know this?
😁 I think I’ve mentioned it in passing before but, yeah- I’m certified as an engineer-brained weather nerd!
Now I wanna see Drew do the weather presenting
Ditto.
- quick intro on me I guess. I'm mike palic. currently an SE/TAM dual role here at netapp. previous with a partner and before that a large netapp customer.
Also one of the 3 mods on /r/netapp and decently active on the community forums. I'm pretty involved with NetApp learning Services.
Hobbies - Building things and LEGOs. I dabble in video games, (BoTW and Borderlands3 are my most recent favs) And cooking food and bbq, drinking beer and bourbon.
Welcome aboard everyone! So excited to see all the new names and faces joining us! If you’re comfortable doing so, say hi and introduce yourselves!
My name is Eldon Lorenzen (so uncomfortable using real name on discord!!!). I am a new SE on the AM-Chesapeake district supporting the DC Metro area. I've been with NetApp for 3 months now and loving every minute of it. Previously I've worked at some VARs and EMC. I am a gamer at heart and currently addicted to WoW TBC Classic.
Did you play it in 2006 too?
i lost many of friends to that game during that time.
as well as some other one that I can't recall the name of
Most of my current “non-work” friends are people I raided with. Friends circles definitely ….. evolved.
same here, some of my best friends are people i met in game 15 years ago, crazy
Same, nick, but Minecraft instead of WoW. 🙂
no Guild Wars? Shame!
Lots of everquest too!
^ that's the one i couldnt' think of earlier
Hi All, This is Sabari from the NetApp Bangalore
Hello Sabari 🙂
Welcome Sabari, what do you do @ Netapp?
Hi Dan iam from the support account management team which is a part of customer support! currently working on cloud enablement and supportability programs for the SAMs
cheers
enjoy!!!
SAM from APAC here - hi! 😄
Hi mate good to see you! 👍👍👍
BTW, I'm Dan Isaacs. In too many discord channels for gaming to use my real name. 🙂
Nicknames are per server, it will only change here
Hello everyone, my name is Alexey. I have been doing NetApp since 2010 (actually it was IBM n 3400). By the way, I also played WoW before, starting from the US open beta. Now only when a new expansion comes out.
Welcome Alexey! Lots of us OG WoW players around as well, myself included. I haven’t logged into retail in almost a year. But loving being back in Outland in Classic!
Also, nice shoutout/throwback to the N-series days of IBM NetApp
What’s up all. This is Chris Pickens and a south area Technical Partner Manager over at NetApp. Before coming over to NetApp just a hair under 5 months ago I worked as a lead NetApp engineer at several Fortune 500 companies. <@&855078901109227608>
Welcome Chris!
Hi all. Joining here currently as a WW Specialist Solutions Architect for Amazon Neptune @ AWS (yay graphs!). However, that will be changing here in the next week and a half. (I'll update here next week with my new adventure. :))
A hearty warm welcome to everyone joining! Happy to have you all here! Drop in, say hello, introduce yourself and let us know what you love doing!
Hi everyone, my name is Chris but everyone calls me Gonzo. I am based in Sydney, Australia and I am a NetApp employee. I'm a Technical Partner Manager who works with our Channel and Alliance partners in Australia and New Zealand and I've been working indirectly with NetApp for almost 20 years, primarily in the Data Protection Space with 7.5 years at Veritas and 8.5 years at Commvault.
oh and this is the first time I am using Discord for something other than playing Counterstrike Global Offensive 🙂
Welcome aboard Gonzo!
Hey Chris!!!! 🙂
'sup peeps?
😩 guess this is what I get for not logging into Discord or Twitch for a while... congrats on the "official" NetApp channel @fast needle & co.!
Wow - this is a cool place to hang out- my first time using Discord - didn’t know such a platform / app existed.
Thank you @fast needle for the invite . So glad to be here.
@my name is janaki and I am a netapp employee - Global account manager for cisco.
Be sure to grab the mobile and desktop apps! You can also just run it in a browser if you prefer. It's mostly all just javascript I believe.
The market for Data Storage is forecast to reach $4.2 billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 32.3% from 2021 to 2026 due to the rapid increase in consumer and machine data developments. The market will be driven by increasing need for smartphones, Laptops, PCs and online storage software in small and large enterprises. The Data Storage Market is expected to grow due to the high adoption of cloud storage technology and external data storage devices.
It's a good time to be in storage.
@unborn edge Done!
Welcome to all the new folks, and thanks for joining! Say hi and introduce yourselves! Please pass along to users and your customers/partners the link to join! https://discord.gg/NetApp
Hey all! I'm Rusty, NetApp employee based in Southern California
PSA: If you're a NetApp employee, right click (or tap-hold on mobile) and Change Nickname to your FIRST & LAST name, and we will verify you and add you to NetApp Staff
Thanks @fast needle updated!
Hi everyone! Kevan here from NetApp based in RTP
Hey Kevan! Welcome to the Discord
Hey All, NetApp SE based in Indiana!
Almost in my neck of the woods (Chicago)
I miss Portillo’s.
We're getting one here in Westfield, IN (10 minutes north of Indy). should be open in the fall
Portillo is a good go to of mine. i'm bummed they are really trying to screw over their Barnelli menu.
Hey Y'all! NetApp Cloud Product Specialist & A-Team member based out of RTP.
here's trouble...
so they let just anyone in then?! 😉
They let you in, eh?
the invite did say ALL hahaha
5?
there goes the neighborhood @knotty coyote
In addition to personal, social media, and internal communication platforms, I might be able to yell loud enough to reach @fresh helm 😂
This feels like I’ve just accidentally walked into a netapp meeting room 😂
Half a mile is reasonable for yelling, right, @knotty coyote
The door is open. We’re all here
I’m mainly here to see what kind of crazy setups people have tbh
Hey stranger!!!! 🙂
Woah, who let you in ;)
@knotty coyote you’re showing up everywhere for me today.
I think this initial wave of NetApp folks will get outpaced by end users and partners over time. That's my hope at least. Definitely don't want this to be "just another hidey-hole" for NetApp employees to congregate in.
I thought the same thing when I got into the CB meeting 😂
@sterile verge que paso amigo! Long time no see!
Hello my dear friend - great to see you here .. sending you hugs @unborn edge
Morning everyone! Just joined this Discord and I am an Enterprise Account Manager in the Pennsylvania District!
Hey All, I'm the Account Techinical Strategist supporting the US Dept of VA...

NetApp is adding fast NVMe-over-TCP access to ONTAP, providing an upgrade to accelerated storage access for its iSCSI-using FAS and AFF array customers and for iSCI users generally. NVMe-over-TCP provides remote direct memory access for data across an Ethernet TCP link. The idea of using NVMe in this way, extending the PCIe bus across a […]
"NetApp is specifically announcing that the next major release of ONTAP, v10.0, will include NVMe/TCP support."
since when is it called v10 again? I guess Chris is mixing something up... next version should be 9.10.1 if I'm not wrong
it's not. it'll be 9.10.1 for on prem.
why 9.10.1 and not 9.10?
x.x.0 denotes cvo based.
x.x.1 denotes on prem
oh interesting
Yeah I’m sure he means 9.10, will message him and ask
unless he's flashing back to GX 😉
Haha
lol
Welcome aboard to all the new folks! Make sure you drop by here and introduce yourself! 🤘
@everyone In partnership with ONTAP product management, we have started a pilot program to broaden access to NetApp's Early Access Program (EAP). Customers can now access a lab containing the next release of ONTAP through the Hands-on Labs (https://handsonlabs.netapp.com/). A brief Non-Disclosure Agreement will be presented during the request of this lab.
This lab was released last week in Lab on Demand as well and can be accessed here: https://labondemand.netapp.com/lab/eapontap9101. Thank you to those who provided feedback to make this a good customer experience.
Please invite your customers to participate in the program and provide their feedback through the NetApp Communities site! The details for requesting access to the private EAP group are all spelled out when requesting the lab. We are working with other groups for similar lab offerings in the future.

The doors that FSx are going to open up are massive. Manage EKS with Spot, and connect PVC’s to FSx ONTAP!
Last week, AWS and NetApp announced the general availability for AWS FSx for NetApp ONTAP. In this blog post, we’ll go through the steps to create a FSx for ONTAP filesystem, and you’ll learn how to create volumes using Kubernetes resources with Astra Trident, and how to mount those volumes to pods. As a prerequisite, … Continue reading "Mountin...

i had a 4 hour one on sunday, maybe that's why i was so tired monday.
Welcome everybody from my Fast Track course!
Generic Adderall is apparently in short supply, might want to cut back if you don't take the XR tabs.
talk to your dealer for more info. Seems the primary supplier of the generic amphetamine salts (in US, at least) stopped making it.
Welcome to the handful of people joining from our Knowledge and support teams 🙂
Hello All just joined, working for Computer Data Source, mostly Netapp. Have worked at Convergys Netapp for 3 years prior. Looking to Network and keep my Netapp knowledge up to date.

We’re prepping for our big event tomorrow, called Insight. Have you registered?
Hi folks! Here from Brazil
Hi team, how do I change from Member to Staff?
@pulsar gull Chat with one of the Community Mgrs.
#┊・just-chatting message 😉 Sadly no swag though so i’ll have to deck out in my microsoft and vmware swag while watching
which reminds me, i need to get some red hat stuff
all set, @pulsar gull
Thanks Drew!
Are you sure there won't be swag? 😈
i don’t have any and none was announced but i’m definitely not betting on it
😛
not betting on there being none i mean
I may have some yet-to-be-announced surprises for everyone that found their way here....
it’s going to be a friday evening viewing for me, so i’m hoping it’s good
don’t mind me, i’m a talker. @severe citrus can attest after VMworld
also hi richard
We like talkers! Keeps the conversations going!
absolutely
Afternoon all
Boy there are a lot of us here!
The support teams have definitely showed up in force 🙂
When asked, we show up. 🙂
Prior OnCommand Support moved to Lab on Demand about 2 years ago. On the note of Insight labs, please use the in-page support provided in the Hands-on Labs. There is no plan to provide lab support here (that I'm aware of).
We've got at least one set of eyes from the LoD team here. I won't call them out 🙂
no l0d here
but ya..no hands on lab support will be offered in here as we have a whole staff of folks manning the in-page app
Hey Steve, can you reboot my lab for me
Good morning. I am looking forward to netapp insight 2021. I want to go to Las Vegas again.
So do we @tribal junco!
Been a minute since we've had a big acq in the channel!
I go, leave you some sound: https://nightride.fm/stations?station=nightride
at some point i should probably get around to setting up this bad boy… only owned it for a year already
home lab?
yes
so many watts!
i have a 2552 in the basement. barely noticed it on the power bill.
I haven't tested the consumption of the device yet as when I turn it on I go deaf 😛
I've been looking forward to getting it setup as a spare storage for my server but have yet to get to that project
Another day another Discord! Hello everyone!
Welcome Daniel!
Thanks Nick (I didnt even know we had discord 🤦 , just caught it in your latest email!) But this place looks great!
Thanks! We're just getting it off the ground and wanted to launch it officially with Insight
Hello everyone. Great to see more informative Discords 🙂
Howdy Buzz!
Hey Nick. How are you?
Anxious and excited because I know what's coming over the next few hours! 😬😬
Good luck to you guys! May everything run smooth 🙂
So are the Discord Channels and Voice Chats official areas for the Insight Event?
Yup! It all counts! This is more geared towards the community, but we've got a lot of support staff and SME's in here from all areas that are employees as well.
If you'd like to chat with someone about something, hit up #895777293165821962 and just let someone know and drop into a room. Turn cams and mics on and have a chat! I like to think of this as a virtual booth in the expo hall.
Great to know, thank you.
Hello All. Vinicius here. I am a Solutions Engineer covering Brazil.

how goes people's weekend
😐 i’ll be over shortly
😆
This is all VMware’s fault. But as long as I have to rebuild the homelab OTS nodes, I’m going HA with 2tb SSDs all around.
hehehe i often blame vmware
All my lab hosts were booting off USB sticks, and these only have a single NVME slot, which I was using for the OTS system disks. So reinstalling ESX was going to force me to wipe out the nodes anyway.
I've been tetrising things off to temp OTS nodes on NUCs all week to evacuate these two.
It's come a long way. At one point it was a dual socket athlon running GSX. 🙂 the day I decommissioned those jet engines was a good day.
Yeah, red hat seems to get good support, so I got a red hat developer network account to get some instances running. I don't use it much though. Licensing instances just to get into the repos is annoying.
I've got a DL380 in the garage, but it's just too loud to run indoors, about its too hot out there to leave it running 24/7, so it's burst capacity.
Very low WAF score.
I've seen it done. r/homelab, etc.
Yup, no such thing as a cheap hobby
Nice, and not so nice.
Extended family as it were.
Good luck drinking from that fire hose. Things are moving fast these days.
Nice. That product is near and dear for me, I've been running my home lab on it since it was 7mode edge 8.1.1
Yeah, upgrade advisor doesn't get you much even if it did work with OTS.
You can sometimes find it in the tools but you have to dig. Deploy will attempt to post an ASUP when it builds a cluster, and you can take the cluster UUID to hunt down other ASUPs from that cluster.
nods
Indeed.
There is a way to get OTS to see the hardware its running on, but nobody ever turns it on.
My nodes are dead right now or I'd go look it up. Basically you give OTS ESX creeds for its host, and then sysconfig can show you host info, underlying disk info, that sort of thing.
I think it shows up under sysconfig -p but don't quote me 😉
Lol. Well I got hosts air dusted, SSDs installed, and ESX installed, so thats about as far as I'm gonna get with it tonight. Nap time for me. Next zoom is in like 7 hours.
Catch you later.
Heh I saw an ad on Twitter that said NetApp can't snapshot directly to the cloud. It was definitely FUD. I reported it.
@native lagoon can you inform Sophia about that one so we can dispute the ad please
datacentredude more like disputerdudea amiright… look it’s late i’m not giving my best comedy gold
@fast needle I will let her know.
Sorry I don't have any details. I should have captured it @native lagoon .
I've got a cyber security networking event tonight, should be fun
@native lagoon I found some details. It was #NetAppGap on Twitter.
For those that celebrate it- Happy Halloween!
Happy birthday @fast needle ! Hope the move to Vegas goes smoothly for you!
Thanks Eric! 🤘
@late bronze will you please do me a favor and explain your profile photo. I'm rather intrigued 😆
it's from cyberpunk 2077, it's an advert in game
oooohhh. Well that tells me I need to get my ish together and finish the game
yeah I need to get around to finishing it myself, I was right before the final mission and went off to do side quests
It's got stunningly gorgeous gameplay. I've just allowed myself fall by the wayside and settled for mindless TV instead of semi-thought-provoking gaming. Need to flip that
it's a game where you really need a raytracing card though, it looked stunning on my 2660 super
😈 3090 here
jealous 😮
Purchasing that was an... accident
is that what you told the wife?
I told me that. the GF (at the time) wasn't concerned haha
"It wasn't my fault, they accidently left the puchase, then confirm buttons right next to the no thanks button"
I actually just sold my gaming rig as I wasn't using it, I have a PS5 and cloud gaming for that now
I tried for a 3080, and missed it on the bestbuy site. 3090s opened up and I "accidentally" was able to buy one and an intentional slip of the hand led me to hitting the "pay with apple pay" button and, well, you know what happened.
at least you're happy with your purchase now once the "oh god did I really just spend THAT much" wears off
exactly that. I got a real nasty look though, when we had that conversation. I made up for it though, so it's okay. hah
ooh oh. this is my 2nd 3090. my first one "blew up" while playing Destiny and I had to have it RMA'd.
that's not nice, destiny isn't that bad 😛
Best part is that it happened on a friend's live stream. I just... disappeared. I was without a usable video-card in a beast-mode pc for about a month 😠
🤞 @fast needle doesn't let the magic smoke out of his when he finally gets the monster PC built 😜
(which is a whole different series I'll let him choose to share)
I’ll be impressed if I can keep it from frying itself from liquid coolant
I'm looking at building an Intel 12th gen system in the new year if the benchmarks are accurate
the 12900k is an absolute powerhouse
but I'd be looking at the i7 as I'm not made of money
We've finally reached some interesting times... AMD and Intel are in good competition again
This new PC I built in March/21 is the first AMD I've ever built
it's an exciting time for tech, there's so much going on at the moment
Give us a heads up here before jumping in on the 12th gen. We've got a good group of people who stay pretty well informed on the latest happenings with perf and such.
^ there's one of them 🙂
I'm mostly just worried about that power draw on 12th gen
Just get a name-brand 1000W psu and you'll be fine haha
Are you doing AI inferencing at home? Get an i9-9900K and call it a day
Can be had fairly cheaply now
Sounds like you’re wanting a 12th gen for the sake of having a 12th gen more than an actual need for one
it's not about getting it just for the sake of it, it's more about futureproofing, and using the efficiency cores to reduce my power bill when it's not needing to do some high performance workloads
the 9900k is getting kind of old now, especially given it doesn't have pcie 4
plus, I can claim it on R&D for tax purposes as well
The power draw on the 12th gen isn’t as bad as anyone makes out
190w boost is uncomfortably high, but it’s more a question of how long it’s at that power
It’s no more than a TV, fridge, freezer. It’s less than using a kettle or toaster a half dozen times a day
The max boost is limited in the spec to how long you can sustain PL4
my baseline consumption for my whole house is 300w
it’s not too high that it’s unreasonable but i do need to determine what that power usage means in real world consumption
My solar panels generate more than we use so I really don’t care most of the time.
But even then I have 2 PCs with high end CPUs/GPUs and 1600W PSUs and I don’t notice them in terms of power consumption
They are on 24/7
And that’s with low winter sun at 8am
If I was running benchmarks or doing some crazy rendering on both machines at once I’m sure I’d notice some spikes
Although we are looking at getting more PV panels on the garage next year. Charging the car uses more than we generate currently
i’m one of the lucky renters that has solar but it’s only 1.5kwh
if i owned the house i’d put a 3.3 on the roof
We can probably get between 6-8 total across the house and double garage. I want to change the current house ones (they came with it) as I want smarter connected ones.
smarter connected?
Yeah you can get panels that work individually rather than in series, they are also all connected back to fully controllable app and distribution set up. So you have panels, battery, car charging etc all working together
Company called Solar Edge do the one I’m looking at
oh wow, i didn’t know that
Being a techie I love the tech more than the benefits lol
haha i know that feeling
My friend has a system and his is all hooked in to Grafana, then he uses octopus energy and their variable tariff. When they are paying him for electricity he charges the battery, when the power gets to peak rates he goes off grid and on to solar/battery.
If you automate it based on the pricing APIs you can really make it work for you
that’s an interesting use of grafana, i legit never thought of that
Home tech is a lot of fun
yeah i’ve been building a smart home myself
I have a RPi cluster running k3s and run home assistant containers and other tools. It’s not finished but it’s getting there.
I need to get some additional USB radios for HASS to connected it up to Hue and SmartThings while I transition over
being a renter i can’t change as much as i want over, but it’s impressive what you can do with a system like home assistant
I have some basic NFS storage on the RPi but next big project will be a real NAS
real NAS, Like a netaaaaaaaaaapp? 😛
Yeah I know the feeling, we rented before the pandemic. It was only having a child and lockdown that led us to buy somewhere
Maybe, I’m not going as far a @fast needle but maybe a software defined version at home.
i use vsan at home
I might look at Astra Data Store as I mostly use containers
Or using Photon IoT on RPi3 😉
If only the US and certain states were as forward thinking as the Europe I would consider solar.
We don’t get many incentives here any more, there were amazing grant schemes for green energy but it all stopped. It’s honestly a really bad move on the governments part as most people can’t afford it. The ROI is like 20 years.
I've thought of making my home a smart home, but 1) IoT scares me, and 2) I don't like the idea of cloud connected devices that I can't trust the security.
So for being as technical as I am, the most high tech thing I have is my work P52 Lenovo and my iPhone 12. :\
Oh my wife's new S21. 😄
IMHO a goot IOT device is : 1) wired 2) don't connected to cloud 3) managed with free software
My printer hasn't gotten updates in years (old Canon inkjet), so I just came up with the idea to put a firewall rules in my router to block it from the internet.
That fixed that!
Oof I touched a nerve.
😄
Yeah I know. This Canon printer works well so I don't have a mind to replace it.
The only thing wrong besides not getting security updates is lack of 5 GHz wi-fi and the ink drying out.
Printer companies are ripping us off, and it's high time we did something about it. Join me in starting the revolution.
Get a Laser printer
I definitively thinking about buying a laser printer
the last time I had to poor some costly scam liquid on my inkjet printer it's was costing me 100€
(115$ for my fellow americans)
I would, but I don't print enough to have it worth it. I found 15 ink cartridges (3x of 2x black and the 3x of 3) for $15.
pretty cheap
I should say, not I found...my wife found.
for 1 set, 15$ is dirt cheap. SO 🙂
I bought a color laser printer in 2007 and it still works today. I need to figure out why there are lines and random color toner spots showing up, but it hasn't bothered me enough yet to invest time in diagnosing it. I've had to replace the black toner once, and that's when I had roommates and one of them was in med school printing alllll the time. It was absolutely the right decision for us
Oh yeah definitely if you print all the time.
We print so infrequently that it isn't worth it.
Question, how do I get a flair on reddit?
DM @mild hazel. I'll vouch for ya 🙂
I'll make yours that Cortez
yay
aww man, I only got two out of the three exam vouchers I attended sessions for
oh well
awwwwwwwww man, the one missing is the only exam I actually care about
are the vouchers now specific to the exams?
not sure as it doesn't say explicitly but given the way they were setup, I'd say they would be
Verified on Teams. All set 🙂
nice. 10 cores, 128gb ram support, that would make a decent lab box.
Lots of new members joining lately. Drop in and say "hey" and tell us about yourself. Or what you'd like to see here. We're here to chat and build a community 🙂
I'm a contrarian so don't wanna
You've been here just over a month. You're not "new" anymore 🙃
😮
I'm treating it kind of like the VMUG
I can appreciate that
I joined mostly because I'm completely new to storage and am probably going to use a SAN at work so figured I could learn from people a lot more knowledgeable than I while also networking
I had a million questions for my poor account manager and solutions engineer at first while I got my head around stuff
How'd you hear about us launching the discord?
through richard kenyan during vmworld
Nice. He's good people
he's a bit crazy, but aren't we all
I see he's online. He's probably watching. We're talking (positively) about him in public over here, afterall
ontap 10.1, is that also going to be available for ontap select? I assume at some point it will
sorry 9.10.1
or whatever it is
sigh nevermind, answered my own question as I checked the download page and 9.10.1rc1 is listed
Yes, ontap is ontap, effectively. 99.9% of the time, it’s available everywhere you find ONTAP.
I don't have a license so can't download the upgrade package which is infuriating since I don't want to tear down my lab to rebuild it with 9.10.1
oh well, sucks to be me I guess
the OTS nodes will usually run the regular FAS/AFF image. product management has been known to get cranky when I do that, but... it works. On the other hand the deploy upgrade image is another story. that's is own unique thing.
Also going the way to test 9.10.1RC1 via OTS since it’s the easiest way for me to do it.
Let’s see how fast I get evaluation licenses 😄
deploy will push it out with a built in 90 day eval, so all you need is the download.
I tried to activate the object-store-server, but it didn’t work without key. But PSHD helped me out of this, forgot about something 🙂
Same for FabricPool
@vagrant nacelle thanks for suggesting this place
You are welcome, thank's for visiting! you can see my video at the hang space ,-) I am here, for our community, for you, for a good purpose 😉
Much appreciated!
Ahh is that like body doubling?
I'll certainly pop in at some point
Welcome!
Discord is on, specialy this server always on on my phone and my Desktop PC.
did discord have network wombles again?
It happens from time to time. There were some big outages yesterday with regional ISPs
Welcome @wintry flame from the CloudCheckr team! Happy to have you joining us!
Thanks! Good to be here
i do worry for tech companies sometimes, they seem to struggle with vowels in their names 😛
Hey everyone, I just made it through the final round of interviews for the S3 academy. I won't know if I'm selected until the end of next week. I'm just curious, what's the S3 academy like? And what is it like working at Netapp? Thanks!
I can point you to some recent S3 grads i've taken under my wing. (both on the Sales/SE side of things though).
I've been in IT since 1995 and so far netapp has been the best company i've worked for.
the culture is amazing.
Doesn't do anything for me
when click interested, it shows the check but goes back to the bell
Looks like it's been removed. We'll need to create a new one to test with.
Try this one: RSVP for AWS re:Invent Watch Party! https://discord.com/events/855068651522490400/910227972194185276
Worked on my test account
I wish they would add a duration option there
Welp that event worked
Guess if it is made before you join the server you can't see it
There was a permissions issue to sort out. that's why the first one didn't work
Ah
Anyone in Azure IaaS Day?
I did not get time today to partake but looking forward to catching replays later.
I'm also working with our events team to get a proper calendar of things we're participating in so that we can add them as events and watch parties here.
For anyone interested in learning more about SpotPC, AVD TechFest will have a short preview of this fully managed, Desktop as a Service offering at 1:40 ET today. Still time to register <-- https://wvdtechfest.com/registration
Any NetApp friendlies want to jump on this thread?
https://www.reddit.com/r/storage/comments/qws3g0/you_all_did_this_to_me/
I don't know the pricing if he can get in under $40k for an AFF and get 600 MB/s.
Maybe an E-Series with all SSDs?
lol under $40k get a qnap
I don't think C190 would have enough horsepower.
8 cores would barely hit 600 MB/s per node.
I was waiting for somebody to suggest qnap or synology haha
That post reads like he's talked himself out of everything that can actually do the job. The budget isn't aligned to the expectations.
I just threw out E-Series. Seems like what he wants.
yeah C190 would be tight, both on space/cost for 50TB.
eseries in a small hyperV farm works well
Guys... what do you have to do to get in here? https://community.netapp.com/t5/ONTAP-9-10-1-EAP-Beta/gh-p/ontap_9101_eap
It still says:
Your request to join was sent September 29, 2021
You will receive a notification if your request is approved.

I'm working at a NetApp partner and want to use this lab (https://labondemand.netapp.com/lab/eapontap9101) which tells me to first get access there...
(yeah, I know, 9.10.1RC1 is already out there, but the one lab-machine we already upgraded is currently shut down... and you know home-office, etc.
I was able to access ONTAP 9.10.1 beta in LOD without registration. Maybe it was mapped to our partner status I guess
But maybe I'm talking about a different lab 😄
Nah, it looks like it works for me too... but then the description is misleading since they want you to "Go to the NetApp Community Group page above and share any feedback or issues to the group."
I would have liked to share feedback but it looks like only the elite of "93 members" are allowed in this "Closed group" 😩
I could try to join the group, but idk if this will work since GA of 9.10.1 is coming very soon I guess 😄
@turbid hornet I’m the NetApp Community Manager. Let me take a look at the request and check with the team there to find out if there are any missing requirements. There were some LOD tie-ins that may have been overlooked.
i should probably study for my aws exam next week
we'll send you a $5 Starbucks digital gift card*.
Cool, I'll stare at it lovingly in my inbox while it collects dust since the closest store is about 1000kms away (yes I'm being facetious, it's a nice gift, just one that's not capable of being used here)
What is that for?
Was that from us or AWS?
from you
If you'll DM me your email, I'll see what I can do 😉
it's all good, it's just a $5 coffee gift card so I'm not missing out on much
$5 is $5 🙈
Nice to see NetApp is now also on Discord! Thanks!
Non-US customers will receive an alternative gift card selection based on their country of residence.
Morning all, do you also have issues with NSS login at the moment?
Current I have Guest Level instead Partner Level, got already in touch with a support agent to re-trigger the normal level, so just have to wait for 2-4 hours ^^
Hi @carmine sentinel If you want to log into https://community.netapp.com/ and DM me your username, I'll see what account role gets assigned. The community uses some of the same processes as NSS.
Hey, it's already solved, thank you for help! I've asked since some of our employees have issues with the level, maybe it's due to the preparement for B2C change
But we have pushed it through our internal communication, so everyone should be aware about the issue 🙂
Glad it's solved! I'm also sorting B2C items for the community, so it should not be related to that change.
Hey, is there a problem in mysupport.netapp.com?
I can't seem to download OnTap today!
I also can't seem to login to ActiveIQ today either
403 error
@orchid parcel did you try deleting your cookies? Honestly the SSO sometimes breaks. I think the new SSO next month will be better.
Thanks Paul, I actually raised a ticket and my account had been downgraded for some reason. They fixed it for me! Weird
Speaking of SSO... the cutover to Azure IDaaS happens this Friday!
Does Cloud Backup service or snapmirror cloud offer an index?
Index?
I'm probably not best to answer on this as I don't know 100% off top of head, but I think it is still regular SnapMirror under the covers.
So...no
so what exactly is the benefit of cloud backup service
That's a good question. I'll see if I can dig that up. Give me a minute.
Thanks Paul!
Looks like I was wrong about how it works. It backs up to any S3 repository using Cloud Manager the ONTAP snapshots.
Yeah I'm seeing that as well.
There are 2 levels of restores, entire volume and single file. Single file has a browsable catalog that lists the files in a specific snapshot and you can choose which one to restore.
This seems like a cheaper way to do backups to a S3 tier than say having another data center with another set of filers.
If something happens from the source cluster, it can be restored still.
Can I ask that this conversation be continued over in #┊・hybrid-cloud? Or #╭・backup-and-dr
Copied and moved.
VMware in the house!
Howdy!
I use to be with VMware GSS Technical Support on the storage team ^_^ So... storage partner adjacent 🙂
There is one coming in the next update I think. You’ll get a searchable file index
That's an odd site. I never was at Sunnyvale but i can tell that was a NetApp sign.
Hacker Way is facebook's location over in Palo Alto. SVL is "Java Drive"
So are FB moving or expanding?
TBD I reckon
It’s a nice campus, will be interesting to see what they do with it
I was never there when it occupied the full 11 buildings, I think, but it was a really nice campus.
I will miss the sushi guy in the cafeteria at SVL.
REMINDER: NetApp's move to Microsoft B2C IDaaS solution starts in about 40 minutes. It's a noteworthy change and we want to make sure everyone is aware and prepared.

I'll be here for a while. As long as I'm still showing online here, let me know if you have trouble with any of NetApp's sites/tools
Hello guys, I've just joined the discord since I've got a question regarding the NetApp portal, I've noticed the changed and made the new registration after you've moved to (Microsoft B2C IDaaS), but now I'm having trouble finding how to navigate to My Cases page to log a NetApp case.
Yes, I was.
Welcome aboard! Nice work with all of this @fresh helm!
for reference, when trying to access the page from the old link I would get this message:
As long as your pre-registration was done with the same email address, it should all be connected. That said, we're still right in the middle of it all at the moment
I'm on a conference bridge with nearly 50 people 🙂
There's still a handful of connections still being made right now. They're talking about some API issues being sorted
Fair enough, thank you for the assistance I believe it's nothing urgent for the moment being, and was wondering if there is an easy workaround about it. Since we're supposed to log the cases and we've got roughly 1 hour to oblige and trying to find the case details page my next idea was to join the discord and check there ^^
I've notified the NSS team
Thank you Drew, in any case my 12 hour shift is almost done, I'll let my local team know also and if needed we'll probably escalate it further but for the moment being it should be okay. After all its just the beginning of the Weekend's
Greetings from the NSS team 🙂 we're currently in the process of doing the change over and it will take some time for this to be completed. Do you need something urgently?
For the time being I can't say that it is urgent, there is no serious business impact or major problems as far as I'm aware.
Should that change, phone support is the way to go
I know it's not the most desirable option sometimes, but it works 🙂
Currently our job is mainly logging the cases so no worries, If anything occurs we'll let you know probably or follow up. Thank you guys for the warm welcome and wish you a pleasant weekend ahead 💜
enjoy the rest of your shift and have a fantastic weekend!
Cheers, @devout cedar. Glad you found us here
Hi, is there a somewhere I can get a list of SNMP MIB definitions for the NetApp devices?
zyou can try here: https://mysupport.netapp.com/site/tools/tool-eula/ontap-mibs/download
Hey all
Hello!
Quick question around installing the DataONTAP PS module. Does that require anything special to download?
I am trying this on Windows Server 2016 Standard - could be Windows for all I know.
PackageManagement\Install-Package : The module 'DataONTAP' cannot be installed or updated because the authenticode signature of the file 'DataONTAP.psd1' is not valid.
Going to grab some lunch, will check back here in about 15
Thanks @delicate ledge
Can we pick this one up over #╰・software 🙂
<@&895299822712659999> <@&855071026954371088> I have also sent an email to my reps, but I also wanted to say it here to get some good visibility.
The new mysupport.netapp.com login **sucks. **
I just went to go login to grab new firmware for the drive issue (https://kb.netapp.com/Support_Bulletins/Customer_Bulletins/SU480) that was reported. Well come to find out there is this new stupid OTP login method (I say stupid because if my email systems are down because my netapp is offline how the hell am I supposed to be able to login... could you not do a normal 2FA login method?!?). Okay what ever I can deal with that for now... BUT come to find out you have wiped out my old account... So now my account/permissions for my company and devices linked to my account are out the window. On top of that it wont let me re-register!
Not happy. Please pass this along to the team responsible for this "upgrade" and sorry for venting it at you all.
Hi @rustic monolith, I'm sorry you're having issues with the new login. To resolve your registration issues, please submit a non-tech ticket with our NSS Admins and select the category "Registration Issue". https://mysupport.netapp.com/site/help I hope this helps.
and yes, I will pass your feedback along to the appropriate teams
Lisa Su has had an interesting week it seems
inducted into the women in tech international's hall of fame and is on Forbes' top 50 most powerful women list
okay this is getting annoying, someone from Netapp seems to be dialling me, then realising they didn't mean to ring me and immediately hanging up before I get to my phone
twice after hours last night and once just now
Message me the call information privately and I’ll see if I can chase that down, if you’d like.
Hey everyone. It may sound dumb, but how am I able to sign in to my actual Netapp account under mysupport? I am forced to enter an E-Mail address now and it seams that a new account was created afterwards. Is that because of the following statement: "Existing users: If you have not done so, please pre-register now. On completion, access to your NetApp data may take up to 3 hours." ?
We switched from our old SSO to Azure SSO on Friday, so that's why you're having issues.
That's what I thought. So it will work fine again after some hours?
No, you have to take some action. I'm not sure what as I'm an employee.
Maybe @desert flax knows?
If you just did that "pre-register" piece now, then yes, it could take up to 1hr for your accounts to synchronize.
as long as you used the same email address associated with your account, the connections should be made automatically.
Or Drew knows. lol
Yes, I pre-registered just now. Thank you 🙂
This is a mess I can't access anything😔
I pre registered and it doesn't work. I created a new guest account with a different domain and I still cannot access hardware universe
And cookies don't work either I have to input the one time password in every netapp site..
The best advice I can offer for now is to submit a "Registration Issue" ticket through https://mysupport.netapp.com/site/help. The team working those tickets can help, especially if you can provide as much information as possible.
There are a few sites that aren't quite right yet, as far as not requiring an additional login. If you want to send me some of the details of the path you're following that still requires a login, I'll pass it along to the right people
After a couple hours it worked, but I hate the one time password, can it be disabled? It doesn't have session cookies and asks for it every time I go to a different netapp site.. this is a big issue
Do you still have the ticket open?
Options for federated login will open in February, which will allow login without OTP and can instead use your employer's systems for authentication.
Which "different" NetApp sites are you going to that are requiring another OTP?
Drew: I even have it going between SSCM, SmSo, KB, AIQ, NSS, and if I close the browser it seems like I have to put my username again.
That's being sorted too.
I think that's what Mauro is talking about.
netapp support, hardware universe and knowledge base
Not to mention how ridiculous it looks on a 16:9 screen, so much wasted space :/
Same, I submitted a ticket. but they're probably aware of it at this point.
So, elephant in the room.
Log4j mitigation page on netapps support page is a bit, uh, contradictory.
Que?
It states system manager 9 is affected, but ontap isn't.
Considering one can't be patched independently of the other
That's a fair point.
Am I misreading this or?
Lemme look at it again. digs up link
Uh...SM9 isn't affected.
Sorry for small zoom, but basically I was pointing it wasn't affected.
Awesome, that got moved over from last night when I was reading it further
Yeah it was a big work in progress. log4j was a mess.
Hello all, i have a short question, is there already a software fix for the log4 Vulnerability in the ONTAP tools for VMware vSphere ? Thanks in advance
https://security.netapp.com/advisory/ntap-20211210-0007/ You can check the advisory for new information regarding the Log4j vulnerability. At the moment there is not a software fix or workaround available for this product.
Multiple NetApp products incorporate Apache Log4j. Apache Log4j versions prior to 2.15.0 are susceptible to a vulnerability which when successfully exploited could allow an attacker who can control log messages or log message parameters to execute arbitrary code loaded from LDAP servers when message lookup substitution is enabled.

@fast needle No, not really
hi I'm max. i want to ask some questions about lenovo storage.
i wamt to change UNIX permissions to NTFS permissions how can i do that ?
someone can recommend me.
HI @here I am facing an issue in NETAPP python sdk . Getting the below errors.
ta_ontap.OntapClient.ClientSideError: [OntapClient] Client Side Code Error 13001: Aggregated instances requested for the lun object exceeds the data capacity of the performance subsystem, because it includes 7928 constituent instances. With the current counter set, use the -node, -vserver, or -filter flags to include at most 2612 constituent instances in order to stay within the data capacity. Alternatively, requesting fewer counters will also reduce the required data and may allow more instances to be requested.
Please let me know how I can overcome with this issue.
Thanks in advance !!!
Are you talking rebranded NetApp storage?
Answered in #software.
@verbal dawn try this kb article...under the hood its still ONTAP just with lenovo branding: https://kb.netapp.com/Advice_and_Troubleshooting/Data_Storage_Software/ONTAP_OS/How_to_change_security_style_of_volume_from_Unix_to_NTFS_in_Clustered_Data_ONTAP
For the NetApp Support site, is there anyway to change the way Multifactor works when logging in? I don't mind using an OTP but can I setup the Authenticator app on my phone?
Not yet @quaint sparrow. That is an option with identity federation, which we'll begin supporting in February 2022.
Sounds good, thanks @fresh helm !
hi, so recently on of the harddrives broke. Its definetly a warrantycase. How can i report that?

Happy New Year! Love, peace and health! Great vcommunity! Happy 2022! Salute! 🍻😀🎉
Hi everyone and happy new years!
I was wondering if anyone here knows their way around XCP?
My issue might be very simple or impossible IDK. But I trying to run a scan, where I want to search for directories which holds > or < a certain amount of data.
-du options provides me with size of the directories, but it shows all the directories, i need more specific.
In TR-4571 on page 131 you’ll find some syntax for XCP that does something similar, it’s getting the directory size value, you could modify this slightly to achieve what you want. On page 130 there is some native find syntax for listing the top 10 directories of a mount point, again this could be adjusted for your use case.
Thanks, greatly appreciate it! I believe this will satisfy my need 🙂
If you need anything else please reach out, I use XCP quite a lot and Justin who wrote the TR is also really knowledgable and he’s around here from time to time as well
Thanks, I sure will!
Hi, I am new to Netapp and SAN storage. I'm trying to configure AFF C190 system with 2 nodes and 18 disks (894GB each), When I create an aggregate on a node, it seems to share the disks between the nodes and halves the disk size so each disk would only contain 431GB. Even if I manually create the aggregates with all 18 disks in 1 node, it would still halve the disk size. Please could anyone assist?
Followup in #╰・software
@old stag This is due to ADP or Advanced Disk Partitioning and you want it because it allows you to use partitions as spares instead of entire drives reducing the "spares tax". There's other benefits as well such as striping a workload across all the drives.
The disks are actually partitioned in 3 slices, one for root aggregates as well.
Here's an older post I wrote on the subject but it's mostly accurate still I believe:
https://blog.iops.ca/2016/11/10/adpv1-and-adpv2-in-a-nutshell-its-delicious/
@lost lichen mind moving that to #╰・software ? There’s a whole long convo thread down there.
Hey so I made it into the S3 Academy! Wondered if you all had any advice?
Congrats! Don’t try to drink from the firehouse. Understand ONTAP and what each of the Flex & Snap words do and that’ll lay a solid foundation. 🙂
Congrats! If you can set up an ONTAP simulator and play with it. It's a VM so if you screw up, you'll be able to reset it.
You could even set up on your laptop or maybe get lab space.
What Track are you doing/thinking?
As soon as you get your credentials, make sure you can get into labondemand.NetApp.com known as (LOD). Also look into the Self-Paced Learning (SPL) courses provided by NetApp Learning Services (NLS).
Yes I've heard about this. I'll try and find it again!
Thanks Paul!
I'm not sure. I assume it was the standard track. it says Graduate Cloud Solutions Architect
I already work in NetApp as an intern. So I can access that now! 😄

hello!
Hello @viscid smelt !
My head is burning but I've just successfully renewed my NCTA, NCSIE, NCSE-ONTAP-Specialist, NCDA, NCIE-SAN, NCIE-DP and NAMCIP certs! 🎉💪
Wow. Congrats.
wow congrats I let my NCDA and NCIE-DP lapse should maybe update them lol
Fun fact, If you don't let it lapse, you just have to renew the more advanced cert and the NCDA will auto renew along with it.
did not know that lol
well too late now lol
maybe once Insight starts being IRL again ill get certs again that was usually what i did was just take tests at insight
ah yeah, i think a lot of folks did that.
I really hope this is the year. Re:invent was inperson and they did a pretty good job at the inperson event with covid protocals.
insight was always a great time even in spite of the murders the last go round
it was very much a... unique experience
very.
i just miss hanging with folks at insight. so many fun memories (outside of that one year).
Presenting and networking during the day, drinking/hanging at night.
oh yes it was
yes i really hope they bring it back
I really thought it being more difficult then the DP one but maybe because I'm more used to all the SM-fun and MCC etc
all the NVMe stuff and terminology was not so easy
also I remember and still don't understand why there was a Veeam question 😐
oh wait I think that was in the DP one
Yeah, There's also a commvault question or two out there.
same reason the SAN has Cisco and Brocad/com questions
I've also noticed that I really need to get a Cloud Central account and start my Azure Fundamentals course
you'll be doomed if you don't get used to all the Cloud stuff NetApps releasing constantly
i recall a small handful of veeam related questions in ncie dp what they were specifically i cant remmeber
yeah, there's not a lot of them, but just a few per test.
If you want to build an Oracle solution that would compete with Oracle Database Appliance - what would you recommend as backend storage: EF series, AFF All SAN Array or Solidfire?
If you only care about performance
I think both of those were my fault, lol.
I believe you are correct 🙂
Probably EF.
I can personally attest to running production Oracle on a regular ol’ FAS3140 with 10GbE back in 2010. Oracle requires two things: low latency and throughput (big pipe). Backend disk activity requirements can be measured based on the random r/w in/out of the db.
It will blow peoples’ minds when you show them x86 Linux based Oracle with 10Gb and dNFS running circles around the craziest SPARC and fiber channel configurations.
....and then if you really wanna blow their minds, do the same thing in a VM.
dNFS is great, even better when oracle started enabling it... (long story from back from like v11?) back when i was a customer we ran something something like 20+ oracle instances as vms all pointing back to dNFS off a 4 node 6290.
Yea it was 10g or 11
we had (3) HP DL380's each with 128GB of RAM that had nothing but the Oracle stack on it, with its own 3140. Isolated from the rest of the VM inventory. Did a similar thing with Exchange. This allowed me to take most of the datacenter offline for maintenance as-needed but keep email and production Oracle and middleware online.
It was necessary while we were neck-deep virtualizing everything and consolidating ~1,000 servers into 6 ESX hosts.
I'm thinking about SAN, iSCSI or NVMe/FC, not NFS 🙂 Or even direct-connecting it, which you can do with EF series. AFAIK Exadata is supposed to be the fastest Oracle solution and it's just a bunch of compute nodes with internal disk
that was a little trip down memory lane for us 🙂 .
but for eSeries . you'll have to do a block protocol.
Fastest is always subjective.
If you have SAN expertise in-house, and enjoy working with a bajillion LUNs, have at it. Personally I found “fastest” to be more related to recovery and backup, and the ability to replicate devtest sandboxes. And those are both nearly instantaneous with no technical overhead when working with NFS. To each their own.
For production, the dNFS config was more than enough to satisfy requirements and was years faster than the legacy SAN kit they were using before.
And about 1/8th the cost.
Hello All!
My name is Graham Bird,
I have been a customer of NetApp since 2009 when i got my first exposure to a FAS270 and from there I have worked with various versions of FAS systems across the world. Also took a detour into the world of Isilon for a while but currently replacing it with our latest purchase of FAS500f paired with StorageGRID SG1000 / SG6060.
Have also work with NetApp HCI clusters since 2018
And finally was using NetApp SaaS Backup for 365 but now being evicted as the product is being put out to pasture 😦
Glad to have you here, @dry thunder
Yes. NVMe/FC seems to be all the rage now 🙂
NVMe vroom vroom
How are you using StorageGrid? Is it for FabricPool?
Hey Everyone! Not sure if this is the appropriate group to ask but I wanted to ask if anyone is currently studying for the NCHA or has recently passed. Would love to pick their brain about the best study source.
Is NetApp ONTAP Simulator not available for download anymore?
Yeah FabricPool but will be trying S3 withh our Veeam backups at some point
Be careful, Veeam doesn't support running backups of warm data from cold tier.
Learned that the hard way.
anyone else getting super annoyed with the "New" NetApp b2c accounts and email OTP's
its just so slow and painful
It's annoying but not really slow - at least the mails with the OTP are arriving almost instantly.
What's annoying is that sooo often there are some issues with cookies etc, that you need to completely wipe them or use another browser / private mode... which then means new OTP... yay!
Also when companies have shared accounts.. normally you share a password.. now you need to find the mail box..
And some of NetApp own SaaS products only support 1 account !
The account we had used for the SaaS service the email and to a pagerduty queue which would then raise p1 tickets..
So ever time I tied to get OTP passwords.. sev 1 tickets were raised..
And I’m sure we are not the only ones in MSP space which has this..
Yeah OTP is a different way to do it, but it makes sense now that I understand it.
Basically the problem is, if an admin leaves the company, they still have access to the NetApp account if the company doesn't know about it, especially if the admin is the only storage admin.
This provides authentication because you have to be an active user of the company's e-mail system to get the OTP in the first place.
I've asked for more information on how we're going to handle account federation so that some of you can use your own company's credentials and processes instead of having to use the OTP login flow. When I know more, I'll share.
The KB article has now been updated with detailed steps about the identify federation: https://kb.netapp.com/Advice_and_Troubleshooting/Miscellaneous/FAQs_for_NetApp_adoption_of_MS_Azure_AD_B2C_for_login
Check questions "What are the prerequisites for Identity Federation?" and "How does an organization request and configure identity federation?"
Also nice to know: "NetApp is aware that additional sign-ins are required for SmartSolveCM and within Ascend quoting. The responsible application teams are working to remove the additional sign-in prompt."
I think I saw it set up before.
awesome.. ill fill out the form now for Identity Federation. We are using that with other vendors. Then i can just use my normal work/AD password..
I have raised a P2 case with NetApp for their Office 365 SaaS backup product. It seems that the only option at the time it was setup 3 years ago..was to use one single account. Hopefully they can change that and any account in our NetApp Company org can sign into that.
Should be able to do multiple accounts.
it should (given its a cloud service) but it does not.. when i try to log in with any other account besides the one that was used to created the service 3 years ago it does not log you in and just kicks you back to the login screen. I have the P2 case and support said for now use this original account and they are looking how to add all our accounts..
You know the 365 Salas backup is being retired? We have been told we will not be able to renew in 2022 and will be provided with a tool to export data out. It's a real shame as it is not a bad product, just needs some finishing touches
no i was not aware of that..
Questions about EF Series. Is there Santricity or E/EF series simulators, something lile ONTAP Simulator? For running it in VMware for testing?
One more: is there any performance data available comparing AFF and EF series performance (IOPS/Throughput/Latency)?
There is one for SANtricity but it's only available for NetApp internal and partners. You could ask your NetApp contact if he/she can provide it to you.
Unfortunately there's also no Lab on E-Series/SANtricity here: https://handsonlabs.netapp.com/
https://www.netapp.com/pdf.html?item=/media/17009-tr4800pdf.pdf page 7 you can see some E-Series comparisons
Thank you @turbid hornet
Any Netapp NFT soon? 🙂
just NTFS
lol
lol
lol @ symantec comment lol.
😄
Throwback... I still can't seem to find that crinkle-black nearstore metal bezel anywhere. Hope I didn't lose it in all the moves.
Hey there. Anyone know if async mirroring works for migrating data from old eseries to new one?
Hey @frozen robin not sure we have any E-series specialists in here quite yet but one of the community members might know. Also, can we take this to #┊・hardware please? 🙂
Thanks @fast needle . Sorry about that 😃
All good! Welcome aboard!
The storage arrays have a minimum firmware version of 7.84. (They can each run different OS versions.)
Not sure if this feature should be used for migration use cases
I think using the "Remote Storage" feature would make more sense: https://docs.netapp.com/ess-11/topic/com.netapp.doc.ssm-sam-117/GUID-E8D18A1C-0ECA-4B1C-9F5B-D53D48F986AB.html?cp=1_0_3_7
AFF A800 vs EF-Series EF600: can somebody tell me what would be price difference factor for building A800 All SAN with about 300TB vs EF600 of the same capacity. I don't need $$/numbers, just an estimate - A800 would be N times more expensive (or cheaper) that EF600 of the same capacity. Just a rough estimate?
AFFA800 is going to be more expensive. Can't say by how much unfortunately
Hello 🙂 I've got simple question does netapp have some waranty check like HPE - that I can paste S/N of array and get some basic info like... date of manufature, etc ?
If you’re a customer with a support account, and you bought the system from us or one of our reseller partners, yes we keep track of all your serial numbers, warranties, and support contracts on the support website.
I'm take over the systems - just created the support account and I just want to sort out support things
Do you know who your partner or NetApp account team is? They should be able to help you out sort things out as well.
Not really - all arrays are pretty old, I do not epxect that they have valid contracts. I've raised ticket on support web page, and I've found that the newest array is out of support for one year
I need to collect all data, and make inventory what I get and create some due diligence 😉
Guys can anyone tell me how to check the end support of the array in netpp.?
EOA and EOS are all in hwu.netapp.com
yikes. got ya. I can try and look up your account team if you need. or go via your partner (if there is one).
If your account is able to download tools (depends on support stats on some software we have). There's a tool call config advisor that will let you scan an array and give you config info.
Questiion for people who are running Oracle database on Netapp storage - do you see any space efficiencies from compression and/or deduplication?
@floral bane So I'll preface this by saying my experience was on FAS3140's running 7-mode and Oracle 10g/11g (circa 2010-ish). But we would see very little dedupe on database stuff due to the uniqueness of table data structures, but an insane amount (like 90%) on things like secondary redo log locations. Compression was still very new at that time, but we saw a decent benefit on DataGuard secondaries. We eventually dropped all RMAN and DataGuard facilities in favor of SnapManager for Oracle (now SnapCenter) to SnapVault, and then mirror to secondary location with SnapMirror, because we could restore an hourly snap and replay logs. Doing the native backups have all the efficiencies baked in.
@floral bane i'll add that it really depends on how you structure your /uX mounts. More db's sharing the same volumes will get better dedupe ratios but over all at the aggr level you will see great dedupe and compression ratios...just like if you had a bunch of windows VMs running on a single datastore vs mixing win/linux but at the end the aggr will still be showing great storage savings
but if you want a marketing answer..then Yes you will see great efficiencies from Oracle running on ONTAP 🙂
That's a big one too. We really only had a single production "instance" with multiple databases that shared the same /u0x mount points of the same volumes. The bigger rewarding effort is seen through 10/25/100GbE and proper dNFS configuration server-side.
What about Oracle doing "encryption at rest" / TDE? Does it eliminate any deduplication/compression efficiencies?
@edgy zinc Who's our Oracle person now? I don't even know anymore.
I'll see if I can get them in here. @floral bane I don't have any experience with encryption, we used the native masking add-on in Oracle for PII (I was in Healthcare)
Ebin does Oracle but with SnapCenter....not sure who the Oracle + ONTAP TME is anymore @fast needle
Speaking about SnapCenter - is there a SnapCenter / Oracle "hands on lab" to play with?
ummm i'm not sure if there's an up to date H0L lab atm but there should be one on reg L0D
i know because i need to update those labs next lol
What are you doing today for data protection?
I use 5 1/4" floppies...wait that question wasn't for me lol
What is LOD?
DataGuard
Lab On Demand...bigger catalog of labs for parners/etc
#FBF here is one of my old base architectures as we were consolidating everything. My HA pairs were Foghorn/Leghorn and Rocky/Bullwinkle. Aww...
I think this was in 2008? These were my "big" 3140 pairs at the time. We quickly outgrew them.
PEAK VMware (vSphere 4?) and 10GbE NFS Datastores in-scope here. This was early, early days. The Nexus 5k's had just debuted and we were doing some POC work with Cisco.
I believe those were DS14 shelves with FC drives.
I remember always losing those 😅
Hello all. Happy Friday. First time here so I'll introduce myself my name is joe and I'm just here to look for guides when I get stuck. I think I'll like it here, rather than searching KB.
Happy Friday to you too, Joe. Glad to have you join us!
I'm proud of you for actually installing them and not just throwing them straight in the trash [like I did]
the "fingernails"
Almost certainly. Encrypted data in oracle (and anything else tbh) has a high level of entropy, or randomness, making it a poor candidate for compression/dedupe
I believe https://www.netapp.com/media/8744-tr3633.pdf goes over storage efficiency recommendations for running oracle dbs on ontap

HI
Please check out the #╭・getting-started channel and message Drew or myself to verify and get your Staff role!
Welcome!
Hi All, I joined the discord channel some time ago. I am one of the EE's of the Core team in EMEA.
looking forward to chat and share some knowledge here 🙂
hi all, i got question, i started working for one company which have netapp in place, and i need to clean old ticket in Q where they want to remove NFS shares from servers, if there any tools which can export me all NFS share with export policy "IP address" ? or do you have any advice how can export it easily and put it to XLS, it should be easier to check it in XLS then search it on netapp. thanks

You may get a better response by asking this question in the #╰・software channel.
I am from the Customer Support Delivery side of the NetApp organisation. I would love to hear feedback about things you wish you had known about NetApp Support that could have helped you save time etc. Thinking about ideas for a potential video series relating to helpful Support Tips, so looking for some inspiration from the community here. Any ideas, suggestions or feedback are welcome.

Looks like the lights are on again at Discord. 💡
Can we just talk about how great Nick's beard is
We've got a couple of "great beards" here at NetApp
I have noticed the longer the beard the bigger the brain
I think you need to update your profile pic, Drew. Unless you're still gonna shave it, traitor.
Oh, Drew, are you a smooth face?
no
😬 tomorrow might be the day the beard goes away
Oh man, that looks like a lot of hard work
Honest Amish FTW
If we get to Insight again soon we can do another Beards of Insight
Yeah HA is great, although pricey to get over here
Will need to stock up while I'm next stateside
You could pose at those Viking reenactment camps, like the ones for Renaissance or Civil War.
I do fancy braiding it some time
I must admit when I first saw Drew on Zoom i was really confused as profile picture != true 🤣
Good day everyone 😃
Is there anyone ever facing customer using Nutanix AHV?
I just curious could we use ONTAP NFS/SMB File share capacity directly mounted to every vm/apps that runs above AHV?
if im not mistaken...AHV is Nutanix version of KVM. as long as the OS can support ISCSI/NFS filesystems created/mounted natively to it...it should work. CIFS shares are going to work just as expected from any CIFS server in the network.
@sturdy warren ^^^
think of it like mounting a ISCSI lun to a bare metal server
Hi
i need some help
really really new to Netapp and im currently tasked with expanding an existing system
i was given a ASUP dump
and im having trouble finding the total space available and used
is there a specific file in which i can find these information?
in the RAW asup? no access to the system or the active IQ (Autosupport).
look under df -a
@mild hazel Aggregate kbytes used avail capacity
these are the fields i see
i guess kbytes refers to the total space in the volume?
i mean aggregate
According to a timeline of the Sitel intrusion compiled by Mandiant (dated March 17), the Lapsus$ hackers accessed a spreadsheet on Sitel’s internal network called “DomAdmins-LastPass.xlsx" early on January 21, around the time Okta was compromised.

PSA: Please don’t keep a Domain Admins spreadsheet on the network, ok?
If you or your customers are dealing with the fallout of the Okta hack, that’s how it happened. At a security/auth company.
Genius.
Good afternoon What Are the Main Causes of Inconsistent WAFL and Aggregate Degradation? What Are The Solutions To The Problem For Inconsistent WAFL And Aggregate Degradation?
Bad hardware probably more common.
As Paul stated faulty hardware can be a contributing factor, but also hardware (especially disk) firmware and software should be at the latest versions as newer firmware and newer ONTAP software handle more scenarios / situations better.
I’m disappointed they don’t go in the top like a toaster, but I guess that’s our thing 😆
Ty Very Much @delicate ledge And @quartz veldt
Welcome!
Kansas vs NC in the NCAA must lead to some support team rivalries 😅
Nothing like that Duke/UNC game
Duke vs UNC can break households and end marriages in NC.
Divorce rate %'s data in NC should validate that! 😆
Welp...KU won.
Good Afternoon Someone Can Help Me with 9 Questions For NATSP 200 Accreditation Exam?! 😫
i can try since this is only an accreditation
It's Only An Accreditation @mild hazel! Plz Accept my friend request to send you the questions!

Hey.. is this a right channel to raise help ?
HI,
I am getting Disk Shelf model -DS212C for my existing environment expansion. May I ask how many IP do I need to reserve from network team ?
If you're just adding a shelf, there's no need for extra IPs.
It will just connect to your existing controller.
We can take this convo to #┊・hardware if you want to go more into detail.
Hey Swan and welcome! We've got various channels below in Prods & Svcs, depending on what you think is best suited for your issue. If you're a customer and need to open a support case, that's a different issue. This is not an official place for support, but more a best-effort community. Start by telling us your issue and we can guide you appropriately. 🙂
So I’ve got an old android tablet that I’m 100% sure is hard bricked and won’t power on at all. I’ve tried a lot of 3rd party programs and I can’t seem to make it boot or get it recognized by my PC. Is there another way to unbrick a tablet?
Also safe made, boot loader doesn’t work.
@fast needle
Hi There! We are a company that specialises in enterprise data storage and management. Bricked Android tablets is not really something we can help with, sorry!
There’s more than a couple of companies out there that do data recovery from them - I only know ones for Apple devices personally, but others may have advice on other places to go. The xda developers website has some good android stuff
Is there a Tech Support channel at Orbital Jigsaw?
Best bet for that is probably somewhere like r/android. By the description above, I'd say yep - it's bricked 😕
in case I don't have conditions to change the equipment.... can I solve the problem of inconsistent WAFL?
Possibly...I'd engage Support
Thank you @trail remnant for the Boost! ❤️
Yea! Happy to help @fast needle. Just doing whatever I can to get on that "A-Team" 😉 /s
I hope I can be Murdock. A little "off" is always fun.
(FWIW this is a joke, I have no aspirations for Discord "team" glory)
Can I just say, I really hate the new UI... the lack of visibility on settings and policies is really annoying. I get it you want people to use CLI now days, but you had such a good UI and that was one of the reasons I went with NetApp. But gaaaah what a useless pile of junk the UI has turned into. /rant
You're not the first to say that, and the commentary has been... thoroughly debated. It has also been heard by managers, directors, and VPs throughout the company. Coincidentally, a thread was shared last week in our community to collect constructive feedback on the steps taken in ONTAP 9.9.1 and beyond. If you'd like to participate, you can find it here: https://community.netapp.com/t5/ONTAP-Discussions/OnTAP-9-9-1-Issues/m-p/434056
It has the attention of the right people as well.
I'm aware of the following post which outlines many user's woes with the OnTAP 9.8 GUI (including my own). Now that many of us are on 9.9.1, I'm starting a thread to summarize what issues remain on this version. Hopefully this can 'go up the chain' to encourage further restoration of functionality t...
Drew said it best, but Ill add that I believe it’s been abundantly clear that (even though it was an honest effort to reduce complexity and provide a simpler ‘Getting Started’ UI/UX) we messed up. We’re doing the diligence we should have done in the first place to correct it for the next major update and you’ll see some of them rolled into ongoing maintenance releases. Trust that the right people are aware of it and we’re on it, and that everyone has an opportunity to weigh-in via that thread Drew linked above.
Thank you! I will participate in that discussion, and I am very glad to hear that it is being actively developed to remedy the situation!
By the way: If you only know the early experience from the first new System Manager version in ONTAP 9.8 I would highly recommend trying the 9.10.1 version of System Manager which already has quite some improvements. And - spoileralert - last I checked 9.11.1 has even more improvements. 👀
@rustic monolith Can you elaborate on what parts you're not happy with? And which version? I can add them to my list to run up to the product people. And to @turbid hornet point, 9.8. vs the newer versions (9.9.1 and 9.10.1) is quite different. (and yeah 9.11.1's is pretty good)
Hello All, I am running a new FAS (OnTap 9.10.1) + StorageGRID (Version 11.5.0.5) setup and have started migrating data to the platform, I am struggling to get insights into the tiering of the data off the FAS Aggregate (400 TB) on to the SG.
I have setup a FlexGroup of 300 TB, set the cooling off period to 3 days (to allow for Storage Efficiency to run) and then started the copy from our old Isilon to the system (700 TB), things were going fine at first as data was loaded to the FAS but after a week the FAS had run out of space and everything had ground to a halt.
Can any one recommend some documentation / blogs on using data tiering on FAS?
Hmm weird. What model FAS and what kind of disks?
Did you see any tiering scanners running (either in event log or wafl scan status)?
FAS is a FAS500f with 14TB NVMe SSD, if I run wafl scan status on the node hosting the aggregate I see
Type of scan - progress
composite aggregate tiering Tiering in volume "one of the FlexGroup members" vvbn big number of another big number
That repeats for each of the FlexGroup member volumes
