Happy Monday, folks! As an update, we've officially applied to be official, and hopefully that doesn't take too long. We're going to begin opening the doors a bit more, so if you have other communities you're a part of, esp users and partners, please drop them an invite using this link (for now): https://discord.gg/NPNCkZjyy8

Again, if you're an employee or A-team member, please @/DM myself or one of the mods so we can classify you accordingly! 🙂

Welcome to all the recent joins over the past 24 hours or so! What's been your impression so far?

#

Don’t be bashful! Say hi and let us know what you do

slim fable
#

What's up everybody? For those that don't know me - I'm Donny, I work at an electronics manufacturing company in Wisconsin. I do infrastructure stuff - NetApp, various VMware things, Citrix NetScaler, etcetera. I'm on the A-Team and I am a Wisconsin VMUG Leader. Outside of work, I do lots of outdoor stuff (camping, kayak/SUP, mountain biking), smoke copious amounts of meats, and play retro video games as time allows (I'm replaying the Metroid series in advance of Metroid Dread being released). Don't do much on Discord personally, but I can see this being a really cool platform for partners and customers (like me) to get access to NetApp resources they might not otherwise have.

#

Welcome Donny! Glad to have ya! We’re pushing boundaries and trying some new stuff in here for Insight this year too

I realize many of you might not know who I am, and that's fair- I'm Drew! Being Drew is a full-time job, but so is my role as Community Manager here at NetApp. I promise I won't plug community.netapp.com as often as Linus plugs LTT store, but it probably will happen occasionally. What I will promise though, is that we will try to make sure each of you has a great experience here- whether on Discord or with NetApp in general. My focus is on the Digital Support experience (think KB, Community, and Support Site), but certainly isn't limited to those areas. There is a growing team of NetApp Staff who undoubtedly are interested in helping however they can.

I joined NetApp in January 2020, after 10 years in enterprise networking support, network lab management, and community management. That came after spending four years in NC State's Computer Engineering program before changing my mind, and ultimately graduating with a B.S. in Meteorology ⛈️

Outside of all this, I appreciate good games to play, good food to eat, and good beers to drink. I love to travel and am looking forward to meeting you when things are normal again. 🍻

  • quick intro on me I guess. I'm mike palic. currently an SE/TAM dual role here at netapp. previous with a partner and before that a large netapp customer.
Also one of the 3 mods on /r/netapp and decently active on the community forums. I'm pretty involved with NetApp learning Services.
Hobbies - Building things and LEGOs. I dabble in video games, (BoTW and Borderlands3 are my most recent favs) And cooking food and bbq, drinking beer and bourbon.

The market for Data Storage is forecast to reach $4.2 billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 32.3% from 2021 to 2026 due to the rapid increase in consumer and machine data developments. The market will be driven by increasing need for smartphones, Laptops, PCs and online storage software in small and large enterprises. The Data Storage Market is expected to grow due to the high adoption of cloud storage technology and external data storage devices.

NetApp is adding fast NVMe-over-TCP access to ONTAP, providing an upgrade to accelerated storage access for its iSCSI-using FAS and AFF array customers and for iSCI users generally. NVMe-over-TCP provides remote direct memory access for data across an Ethernet TCP link. The idea of using NVMe in this way, extending the PCIe bus across a […]

"NetApp is specifically announcing that the next major release of ONTAP, v10.0, will include NVMe/TCP support."

@everyone In partnership with ONTAP product management, we have started a pilot program to broaden access to NetApp's Early Access Program (EAP). Customers can now access a lab containing the next release of ONTAP through the Hands-on Labs (https://handsonlabs.netapp.com/). A brief Non-Disclosure Agreement will be presented during the request of this lab.

This lab was released last week in Lab on Demand as well and can be accessed here: https://labondemand.netapp.com/lab/eapontap9101. Thank you to those who provided feedback to make this a good customer experience.

Please invite your customers to participate in the program and provide their feedback through the NetApp Communities site! The details for requesting access to the private EAP group are all spelled out when requesting the lab. We are working with other groups for similar lab offerings in the future.

#

This is all VMware’s fault. But as long as I have to rebuild the homelab OTS nodes, I’m going HA with 2tb SSDs all around.

late bronze
#

hehehe i often blame vmware

subtle rover
#

All my lab hosts were booting off USB sticks, and these only have a single NVME slot, which I was using for the OTS system disks. So reinstalling ESX was going to force me to wipe out the nodes anyway.

#

I've been tetrising things off to temp OTS nodes on NUCs all week to evacuate these two.

#

It's come a long way. At one point it was a dual socket athlon running GSX. 🙂 the day I decommissioned those jet engines was a good day.

#

Yeah, red hat seems to get good support, so I got a red hat developer network account to get some instances running. I don't use it much though. Licensing instances just to get into the repos is annoying.

#

I've got a DL380 in the garage, but it's just too loud to run indoors, about its too hot out there to leave it running 24/7, so it's burst capacity.

#

Very low WAF score.

#

I've seen it done. r/homelab, etc.

#

Yup, no such thing as a cheap hobby

#

Nice, and not so nice.

#

Extended family as it were.

#

Good luck drinking from that fire hose. Things are moving fast these days.

#

Nice. That product is near and dear for me, I've been running my home lab on it since it was 7mode edge 8.1.1

#

Yeah, upgrade advisor doesn't get you much even if it did work with OTS.

#

You can sometimes find it in the tools but you have to dig. Deploy will attempt to post an ASUP when it builds a cluster, and you can take the cluster UUID to hunt down other ASUPs from that cluster.

#

nods

#

Indeed.

#

There is a way to get OTS to see the hardware its running on, but nobody ever turns it on.

#

My nodes are dead right now or I'd go look it up. Basically you give OTS ESX creeds for its host, and then sysconfig can show you host info, underlying disk info, that sort of thing.

#

I think it shows up under sysconfig -p but don't quote me 😉

#

Lol. Well I got hosts air dusted, SSDs installed, and ESX installed, so thats about as far as I'm gonna get with it tonight. Nap time for me. Next zoom is in like 7 hours.

exactly that. I got a real nasty look though, when we had that conversation. I made up for it though, so it's okay. hah

I'm looking at building an Intel 12th gen system in the new year if the benchmarks are accurate

#

the 12900k is an absolute powerhouse

#

but I'd be looking at the i7 as I'm not made of money

fresh helm
#

We've finally reached some interesting times... AMD and Intel are in good competition again

#

This new PC I built in March/21 is the first AMD I've ever built

late bronze
#

it's an exciting time for tech, there's so much going on at the moment

fast needle
#

Here’s the monster currently being built

fresh helm
#

Give us a heads up here before jumping in on the 12th gen. We've got a good group of people who stay pretty well informed on the latest happenings with perf and such.

#

^ there's one of them 🙂

late bronze
#

I'm mostly just worried about that power draw on 12th gen

fresh helm
#

Just get a name-brand 1000W psu and you'll be fine haha

late bronze
#

it's more about the cost, power prices here are insane

#

34c per kwh

fast needle
#

Are you doing AI inferencing at home? Get an i9-9900K and call it a day

#

Can be had fairly cheaply now

#

Sounds like you’re wanting a 12th gen for the sake of having a 12th gen more than an actual need for one

late bronze
#

it's not about getting it just for the sake of it, it's more about futureproofing, and using the efficiency cores to reduce my power bill when it's not needing to do some high performance workloads

#

the 9900k is getting kind of old now, especially given it doesn't have pcie 4

#

plus, I can claim it on R&D for tax purposes as well

hearty perch
#

The power draw on the 12th gen isn’t as bad as anyone makes out

late bronze
#

190w boost is uncomfortably high, but it’s more a question of how long it’s at that power

hearty perch
#

It’s no more than a TV, fridge, freezer. It’s less than using a kettle or toaster a half dozen times a day

#

The max boost is limited in the spec to how long you can sustain PL4

late bronze
#

my baseline consumption for my whole house is 300w

#

it’s not too high that it’s unreasonable but i do need to determine what that power usage means in real world consumption

hearty perch
#

My solar panels generate more than we use so I really don’t care most of the time.

#

But even then I have 2 PCs with high end CPUs/GPUs and 1600W PSUs and I don’t notice them in terms of power consumption

#

They are on 24/7

late bronze
#

sadly i’m not that lucky

#

i’m sure it’ll be fine, i just need more data

hearty perch
#

And that’s with low winter sun at 8am

#

If I was running benchmarks or doing some crazy rendering on both machines at once I’m sure I’d notice some spikes

#

Although we are looking at getting more PV panels on the garage next year. Charging the car uses more than we generate currently

late bronze
#

i’m one of the lucky renters that has solar but it’s only 1.5kwh

#

if i owned the house i’d put a 3.3 on the roof

hearty perch
#

We can probably get between 6-8 total across the house and double garage. I want to change the current house ones (they came with it) as I want smarter connected ones.

late bronze
#

smarter connected?

hearty perch
#

Yeah you can get panels that work individually rather than in series, they are also all connected back to fully controllable app and distribution set up. So you have panels, battery, car charging etc all working together

#

Company called Solar Edge do the one I’m looking at

late bronze
#

oh wow, i didn’t know that

hearty perch
#

Being a techie I love the tech more than the benefits lol

late bronze
#

haha i know that feeling

hearty perch
#

My friend has a system and his is all hooked in to Grafana, then he uses octopus energy and their variable tariff. When they are paying him for electricity he charges the battery, when the power gets to peak rates he goes off grid and on to solar/battery.

#

If you automate it based on the pricing APIs you can really make it work for you

late bronze
#

that’s an interesting use of grafana, i legit never thought of that

hearty perch
#

Home tech is a lot of fun

late bronze
#

yeah i’ve been building a smart home myself

hearty perch
#

I have a RPi cluster running k3s and run home assistant containers and other tools. It’s not finished but it’s getting there.

#

I need to get some additional USB radios for HASS to connected it up to Hue and SmartThings while I transition over

late bronze
#

being a renter i can’t change as much as i want over, but it’s impressive what you can do with a system like home assistant

hearty perch
#

I have some basic NFS storage on the RPi but next big project will be a real NAS

late bronze
#

real NAS, Like a netaaaaaaaaaapp? 😛

hearty perch
#

Yeah I know the feeling, we rented before the pandemic. It was only having a child and lockdown that led us to buy somewhere

#

Maybe, I’m not going as far a @fast needle but maybe a software defined version at home.

late bronze
#

i use vsan at home

hearty perch
#

I might look at Astra Data Store as I mostly use containers

carmine sentinel
#

Or using Photon IoT on RPi3 😉

drowsy otter
#

If only the US and certain states were as forward thinking as the Europe I would consider solar.

hearty perch
#

We don’t get many incentives here any more, there were amazing grant schemes for green energy but it all stopped. It’s honestly a really bad move on the governments part as most people can’t afford it. The ROI is like 20 years.

delicate ledge
#

I've thought of making my home a smart home, but 1) IoT scares me, and 2) I don't like the idea of cloud connected devices that I can't trust the security.

So for being as technical as I am, the most high tech thing I have is my work P52 Lenovo and my iPhone 12. :\

I would, but I don't print enough to have it worth it. I found 15 ink cartridges (3x of 2x black and the 3x of 3) for $15.

I should say, not I found...my wife found.

safe bone

fresh helm

I bought a color laser printer in 2007 and it still works today. I need to figure out why there are lines and random color toner spots showing up, but it hasn't bothered me enough yet to invest time in diagnosing it. I've had to replace the black toner once, and that's when I had roommates and one of them was in med school printing alllll the time. It was absolutely the right decision for us

delicate ledge

Oh yeah definitely if you print all the time.

We print so infrequently that it isn't worth it.

right but the catalog is the question.

delicate ledge
#

Yeah I'm seeing that as well.

#

There are 2 levels of restores, entire volume and single file. Single file has a browsable catalog that lists the files in a specific snapshot and you can choose which one to restore.

This seems like a cheaper way to do backups to a S3 tier than say having another data center with another set of filers.

If something happens from the source cluster, it can be restored still.

The new mysupport.netapp.com login **sucks. **

I just went to go login to grab new firmware for the drive issue (https://kb.netapp.com/Support_Bulletins/Customer_Bulletins/SU480) that was reported. Well come to find out there is this new stupid OTP login method (I say stupid because if my email systems are down because my netapp is offline how the hell am I supposed to be able to login... could you not do a normal 2FA login method?!?). Okay what ever I can deal with that for now... BUT come to find out you have wiped out my old account... So now my account/permissions for my company and devices linked to my account are out the window. On top of that it wont let me re-register!

Hey everyone. It may sound dumb, but how am I able to sign in to my actual Netapp account under mysupport? We switched from our old SSO to Azure SSO on Friday, so that's why you're having issues.

HI @here I am facing an issue in NETAPP python sdk . Getting the below errors.
ta_ontap.OntapClient.ClientSideError: [OntapClient] Client Side Code Error 13001: Aggregated instances requested for the lun object exceeds the data capacity of the performance subsystem, because it includes 7928 constituent instances. With the current counter set, use the -node, -vserver, or -filter flags to include at most 2612 constituent instances in order to stay within the data capacity. Alternatively, requesting fewer counters will also reduce the required data and may allow more instances to be requested.
Please let me know how I can overcome with this issue.

Thanks in advance !!!

Hi everyone and happy new years!
I was wondering if anyone here knows their way around XCP?
My issue might be very simple or impossible IDK. But I trying to run a scan, where I want to search for directories which holds > or < a certain amount of data.
-du options provides me with size of the directories, but it shows all the directories, i need more specific.

hearty perch
#

In TR-4571 on page 131 you’ll find some syntax for XCP that does something similar, it’s getting the directory size value, you could modify this slightly to achieve what you want. On page 130 there is some native find syntax for listing the top 10 directories of a mount point, again this could be adjusted for your use case.

Hi, I am new to Netapp and SAN storage. I'm trying to configure AFF C190 system with 2 nodes and 18 disks (894GB each), When I create an aggregate on a node, it seems to share the disks between the nodes and halves the disk size so each disk would only contain 431GB. Even if I manually create the aggregates with all 18 disks in 1 node, it would still halve the disk size. Please could anyone assist?

delicate ledge
lost lichen
#

@old stag This is due to ADP or Advanced Disk Partitioning and you want it because it allows you to use partitions as spares instead of entire drives reducing the "spares tax". There's other benefits as well such as striping a workload across all the drives.

The disks are actually partitioned in 3 slices, one for root aggregates as well.

Here's an older post I wrote on the subject but it's mostly accurate still I believe:

https://blog.iops.ca/2016/11/10/adpv1-and-adpv2-in-a-nutshell-its-delicious/

Ever since clustered Data ONTAP went mainstream over 7-Mode, the dedicated root aggregate tax has been a bone of contention for many, especially for those entry-level systems with internal drives. …

If you want to build an Oracle solution that would compete with Oracle Database Appliance - what would you recommend as backend storage: EF series, AFF All SAN Array or Solidfire?

#

If you only care about performance

narrow gale
mild hazel
fast needle
#

I can personally attest to running production Oracle on a regular ol’ FAS3140 with 10GbE back in 2010. Oracle requires two things: low latency and throughput (big pipe). Backend disk activity requirements can be measured based on the random r/w in/out of the db.

#

It will blow peoples’ minds when you show them x86 Linux based Oracle with 10Gb and dNFS running circles around the craziest SPARC and fiber channel configurations.

#

....and then if you really wanna blow their minds, do the same thing in a VM.

mild hazel
#

dNFS is great, even better when oracle started enabling it... (long story from back from like v11?) back when i was a customer we ran something something like 20+ oracle instances as vms all pointing back to dNFS off a 4 node 6290.

fast needle
#

Yea it was 10g or 11

#

we had (3) HP DL380's each with 128GB of RAM that had nothing but the Oracle stack on it, with its own 3140. Isolated from the rest of the VM inventory. Did a similar thing with Exchange. This allowed me to take most of the datacenter offline for maintenance as-needed but keep email and production Oracle and middleware online.

#

It was necessary while we were neck-deep virtualizing everything and consolidating ~1,000 servers into 6 ESX hosts.

floral bane
#

I'm thinking about SAN, iSCSI or NVMe/FC, not NFS 🙂 Or even direct-connecting it, which you can do with EF series. AFAIK Exadata is supposed to be the fastest Oracle solution and it's just a bunch of compute nodes with internal disk

mild hazel
#

that was a little trip down memory lane for us 🙂 .

#

but for eSeries . you'll have to do a block protocol.

fast needle
#

If you have SAN expertise in-house, and enjoy working with a bajillion LUNs, have at it. Personally I found “fastest” to be more related to recovery and backup, and the ability to replicate devtest sandboxes. And those are both nearly instantaneous with no technical overhead when working with NFS. To each their own.

#

For production, the dNFS config was more than enough to satisfy requirements and was years faster than the legacy SAN kit they were using before.

#

And about 1/8th the cost.

anyone else getting super annoyed with the "New" NetApp b2c accounts and email OTP's

#

its just so slow and painful

turbid hornet
#

It's annoying but not really slow - at least the mails with the OTP are arriving almost instantly.

#

What's annoying is that sooo often there are some issues with cookies etc, that you need to completely wipe them or use another browser / private mode... which then means new OTP... yay!

potent rivet
#

Also when companies have shared accounts.. normally you share a password.. now you need to find the mail box..

#

And some of NetApp own SaaS products only support 1 account !

#

The account we had used for the SaaS service the email and to a pagerduty queue which would then raise p1 tickets..

#

So ever time I tied to get OTP passwords.. sev 1 tickets were raised..

#

And I’m sure we are not the only ones in MSP space which has this..

delicate ledge
#

Yeah OTP is a different way to do it, but it makes sense now that I understand it.

#

Basically the problem is, if an admin leaves the company, they still have access to the NetApp account if the company doesn't know about it, especially if the admin is the only storage admin.

#

This provides authentication because you have to be an active user of the company's e-mail system to get the OTP in the first place.

fresh helm
#

I've asked for more information on how we're going to handle account federation so that some of you can use your own company's credentials and processes instead of having to use the OTP login flow. When I know more, I'll share.

turbid hornet
#

Check questions "What are the prerequisites for Identity Federation?" and "How does an organization request and configure identity federation?"

#

Also nice to know: "NetApp is aware that additional sign-ins are required for SmartSolveCM and within Ascend quoting. The responsible application teams are working to remove the additional sign-in prompt."

delicate ledge
#

I think I saw it set up before.

potent rivet
#

I have raised a P2 case with NetApp for their Office 365 SaaS backup product. It seems that the only option at the time it was setup 3 years ago..was to use one single account. Hopefully they can change that and any account in our NetApp Company org can sign into that.

delicate ledge
#

Should be able to do multiple accounts.

potent rivet
#

it should (given its a cloud service) but it does not.. when i try to log in with any other account besides the one that was used to created the service 3 years ago it does not log you in and just kicks you back to the login screen. I have the P2 case and support said for now use this original account and they are looking how to add all our accounts..

floral bane
#

Questiion for people who are running Oracle database on Netapp storage - do you see any space efficiencies from compression and/or deduplication?

fast needle
#

@floral bane So I'll preface this by saying my experience was on FAS3140's running 7-mode and Oracle 10g/11g (circa 2010-ish). But we would see very little dedupe on database stuff due to the uniqueness of table data structures, but an insane amount (like 90%) on things like secondary redo log locations. Compression was still very new at that time, but we saw a decent benefit on DataGuard secondaries. We eventually dropped all RMAN and DataGuard facilities in favor of SnapManager for Oracle (now SnapCenter) to SnapVault, and then mirror to secondary location with SnapMirror, because we could restore an hourly snap and replay logs. Doing the native backups have all the efficiencies baked in.

edgy zinc
#

@floral bane i'll add that it really depends on how you structure your /uX mounts. More db's sharing the same volumes will get better dedupe ratios but over all at the aggr level you will see great dedupe and compression ratios...just like if you had a bunch of windows VMs running on a single datastore vs mixing win/linux but at the end the aggr will still be showing great storage savings

#

but if you want a marketing answer..then Yes you will see great efficiencies from Oracle running on ONTAP 🙂

fast needle
#

That's a big one too. We really only had a single production "instance" with multiple databases that shared the same /u0x mount points of the same volumes. The bigger rewarding effort is seen through 10/25/100GbE and proper dNFS configuration server-side.

floral bane
#

What about Oracle doing "encryption at rest" / TDE? Does it eliminate any deduplication/compression efficiencies?

fast needle
#

@edgy zinc Who's our Oracle person now? I don't even know anymore.

#

I'll see if I can get them in here. @floral bane I don't have any experience with encryption, we used the native masking add-on in Oracle for PII (I was in Healthcare)

Best bet for that is probably somewhere like r/android. By the description above, I'd say yep - it's bricked 😕

I hope I can be Murdock. A little "off" is always fun.

(FWIW this is a joke, I have no aspirations for Discord "team" glory)

Can I just say, I really hate the new UI... the lack of visibility on settings and policies is really annoying. I get it you want people to use CLI now days, but you had such a good UI and that was one of the reasons I went with NetApp. But gaaaah what a useless pile of junk the UI has turned into. /rant

You're not the first to say that, and the commentary has been... thoroughly debated. It has also been heard by managers, directors, and VPs throughout the company. Coincidentally, a thread was shared last week in our community to collect constructive feedback on the steps taken in ONTAP 9.9.1 and beyond. If you'd like to participate, you can find it here: https://community.netapp.com/t5/ONTAP-Discussions/OnTAP-9-9-1-Issues/m-p/434056
It has the attention of the right people as well.

Drew said it best, but Ill add that I believe it’s been abundantly clear that (even though it was an honest effort to reduce complexity and provide a simpler ‘Getting Started’ UI/UX) we messed up. We’re doing the diligence we should have done in the first place to correct it for the next major update and you’ll see some of them rolled into ongoing maintenance releases. Trust that the right people are aware of it and we’re on it, and that everyone has an opportunity to weigh-in via that thread Drew linked above.

By the way: If you only know the early experience from the first new System Manager version in ONTAP 9.8 I would highly recommend trying the 9.10.1 version of System Manager which already has quite some improvements. And - spoileralert - last I checked 9.11.1 has even more improvements. 👀

@rustic monolith Can you elaborate on what parts you're not happy with? And which version? I can add them to my list to run up to the product people. And to @turbid hornet point, 9.8. vs the newer versions (9.9.1 and 9.10.1) is quite different. (and yeah 9.11.1's is pretty good)

Hello All, I am running a new FAS (OnTap 9.10.1) + StorageGRID (Version 11.5.0.5) setup and have started migrating data to the platform, I am struggling to get insights into the tiering of the data off the FAS Aggregate (400 TB) on to the SG.

I have setup a FlexGroup of 300 TB, set the cooling off period to 3 days (to allow for Storage Efficiency to run) and then started the copy from our old Isilon to the system (700 TB), things were going fine at first as data was loaded to the FAS but after a week the FAS had run out of space and everything had ground to a halt.

Can any one recommend some documentation / blogs on using data tiering on FAS?

Hmm weird. What model FAS and what kind of disks?

#

Did you see any tiering scanners running (either in event log or wafl scan status)?

FAS is a FAS500f with 14TB NVMe SSD, if I run wafl scan status on the node hosting the aggregate I see

Type of scan - progress
composite aggregate tiering Tiering in volume "one of the FlexGroup members" vvbn big number of another big number

That repeats for each of the FlexGroup member volumes
