I think it's because, compared to the first game, it's not just viable, but lucrative to spend time living on the surface instead of just visitng

Before, you'd use a cyclops and hardly pay attention to the surface once you got everything you needed. Below Zero gives the option to stay on the surface long term if you so choose

In the old one, I had a PRAWN clip through the floor and I was so mad. The Subnautica games, perhaps on account of how detailed and physics driven they are, have always been a tad glitchy. The team usually addresses things quickly though, so I give them credit for being super attentive!
