The new story person felt it was better to mirror the feeling of the first subnautica, thus the "We went to deep again" thing, but that was after they were planning to do more for the surface. That one off to the side is always buggy. However if you have deleted a save, its steam cloud trying to partially recover it causing the issue. Change to steam beta, check the pins it has instructions.

Ok, alternate method, go to purple vents. Find the deep trench that goes to the crystal caves. You have a marker already near there from the fossil analyzer alan told you to go to. When inside crystal caves, stay to the high part (left wall i think), and head east.

The only thing i recall up there in current release is the crash site, just north of the escape pod, and well east north east is the base with the extra large rooms and 2 prawn suits
