i think let's just agree to disagree on the games' genre, because this isn't going anywhere constructive.

i wish we could use snowfox like in promo materials and worms could follow us, that would be sooo cool. sad.

What are you actually yapping about, why are you so hellbent on convincing everyone that Subnautica is a horror game

@fading lily you're not the first one to gripe that bz doesn't feel as good as sn and i can relate to that. but do try to accept that everyone is entitled to their opinions. your opinion may seem like a minority now but if the convo didn't devolve into ad hom and other logical fallacies, we might have had a more fruitful discussion.

anyway, back to scary alien fish game, but freezing.

worn plinth
#

i guess it was probably more used for getting around on land by the scientists so it was useful compared to walking but in game its not much use

fervent bloom

maybe if worms were smaller... (it would be more realistic btw)

cerulean musk

The Snowfox is incredible in the Arctic Spires, but it turns too slowly for it to be useful in most of the Basin

also theres so much land in this game compared to the original its kinda disorientating with all the snow i never know which way is which 😭

Lieutenant approaches the center chair, Captain Robinson, are you sure about this?

Riley swivels his chair to face the Lieutenant, smiles and gives a nod. He heads to the bridge escape pod and steps in. But sir, the Lieutenant exclaims, one of our shuttles can easily land you safely! And you have almost no provisions!

Riley checks his bag, a can of Old Bay, a bottle of Frank’s Red Hot, a jar of Cocktail sauce, and a packet of sushi rice. Standing in the center of the pod, he presses the Launch button.

Below Zero had so much wicked cool concept art, the game would've been so much more fun if they added the creatures. I get why they didnt add them (most of them were variants of pre-existing creatures from Subnautica) but still dawg would've been awesome.

Lolz, I found out something weird. First, there are two texture variants of coral, orange and green, that you can see when you drop them (or use glass shelves mod). But when you craft something like cpu and uncraft it, the coral turns into red version. See all three on this screen.

I had a whole convo abt it earlier, but lots of the unused creatures (that are counterparts) would've added a lot of fun to the game.

#

Also, I forgot to share earlier during my convo but there are also a few really really interesting creatures that I wish made the final cut instead of them copying some of the other creatures (ex. the bladderfish and hoopfish) to the game. Like this one!

#

Here's a little bundle of Concept Art that I forgot to share earlier.

steel shoal
#

I'm glad they went with no eels

finite vale
#

Yeah eels are kind of meh.

#

I'm glad we got some Jellyfish-like creatures.

steel shoal

#

Eye jelly eggs are amazing

finite vale
#

I really hope that Subnautica 3 delves more in to Deep Sea Gigantism

#

No idea why we call it Subnautica 3 💀tbh Below Zero felt more like a DLC.

steel shoal
#

It's not at all a DLC

finite vale
#

I know that it isn't.

steel shoal
#

It's its own thing, a standalone expansion

finite vale
#

I'm just saying, it feels like a DLC to me. /nm

#

It's smaller, and just... meh.

steel shoal
#

It feels really different from SN, it is played in a different way

#

The map is smaller, but most of the SN map was empty anyway

#

They went with a more detailed map

finite vale
#

For me it's mostly the "what could have been" thing, which is why the concepts are some of my favorite.

#

Still, just feels like a DLC to me. I know it isn't but, you know.

steel shoal
#

Your definition of DLC is confusing

finite vale
#

I'm saying it feels like one, not that it is. It's smaller, and felt more like a little addition rather than an actual full-on game.

unique jacinth
#

It's a pretty big addition-

steel shoal
#

The game is huge

finite vale
#

It felt so small to me.

unique jacinth
steel shoal
#

The size difference is not as big, and the vehicles are kinda slower. The map is shallower but still very deep

finite vale
#

I was kinda meh on the story aswell. Robin was annoying to me, I prefer silent protagonists.

steel shoal
#

It isn't a survival-first game, a silent protagonist wouldn't work...

mellow geode
#

so we're just voicing opinions, got it

steel shoal
#

BZ is very different, perhaps too different for some people

finite vale
steel shoal
#

It tried to stray away from the previous game and that messed up with the people expecting SN2

#

Maybe the next title will be more in line with those expectations?

finite vale
#

I think that I like the environment and original creatures the most with BZ.

mellow geode
#

no, subvert expectations please

finite vale
#

The map is pretty small, but like you said it's nicely detailed. My favorite biome is the Lilypads Biome.

finite vale
mellow geode
#

finite vale
wise bone
#

ah oki 👌

mellow geode
#

just stating it out loud so that people don't start arguing opinions as facts

steel shoal
#

The story had to be rewritten, and had to use the same assets. They did an amazing job, but it wasn't perfect ||Maida is still alive, Al-An knows about music harmonies but not about music||but to rewrite a story like this is no easy task. If they had a clear vision since the start, it would've been so good...

finite vale
steel shoal
#

/j

mellow geode
#

😄

finite vale
#

I'm not trying to say my opinion is a super correct one that everyone should agree with, we all have different tastes and our own personal views. I'm just trying to say my thoughts on Below Zero since it's super different from OG Subnautica.

steel shoal
#

I understand your point, but "DLC" is the wrong word

#

I can't quite think what is the correct word, though

mellow geode
#

maybe we can have a BZ dlc that used the original storyline before it got scrapped

steel shoal
#

It got scrapped because the writer left. I don't think they can use it

finite vale
#

Wait the OG storyline... I think I remember some of that.

#

The baby ||Emperors|| were in the Lilypad Biome and you could collect ||Enzyme-42|| from them. That's all I remember.

mellow geode
steel shoal
#

That's not what I said

#

They did get a new writer to help with the new story

finite vale
#

Off topic but on the thoughts of Subnautica 3 I really hope they put in at least a little social commentary on climate change, that would be neat.

mellow geode
#

but new story is totally different from old story... i want to see where the old story would take us

steel shoal
#

They did leave the pre-frostbite update available on Steam. I don't think they're allowed to use and develop the story of a writer that left like that.

mellow geode
#

why not though...

steel shoal
#

I don't know, maybe it's their work

finite vale
# mellow geode why not though...

Moral reasons, it's that writer's work. It's just respectful not to continue their story without them on board or getting their permission.

mellow geode
#

so it becomes the peeper's choice

finite vale
#

So many small fish... So many missed oppurtunities...

steel shoal
#

BZ had so many small fish

#

I still want more though

#

More color variants and such

wise bone
#

i like that you can pick up rockgrubs in bz

mellow geode
#

small things that claim to be fish but don't look like fish
e.g. spinner

finite vale
#

I really want an octopus/squid creature in Subnautica 3

finite vale
wise bone
#

finite vale
mellow geode
steel shoal
#

I want more species interactions. In-lore, Squidsharks hunt Brute Sharks and Glow Whales, and in turn are hunted by Chelicerates. Too bad they don't do it, though.

#

I also want cannibalism grrr raaaawwrr

wise bone
finite vale
#

Subnautica 3 sounds sillier

#

also Below Zero is technically a sequel to Subnautica.

steel shoal
#

BZ is an adjacent story

wise bone
#

it's a sequel, just not called subnautica 2

mellow geode
finite vale
steel shoal
#

It's the MGR:R for MGS

clever crow
#

in terms of story time line too

wise bone
#

i doubt they'd even call the next game "Subnautica 2", boring name

steel shoal
#

It takes after the main story, with the same characters

mellow geode
#

the point is that it isn't called subnautica 2: below zero.

#

so the next game cannot be subnautica 3

finite vale
#

Also, some games that are sequels can have different names than the original.

steel shoal
#

I'm expecting Subnautica 2: bla bla bla, if they go with that kind of name

clever crow
#

subnautica: below three

finite vale
#

I'm expecting just Subnautica: Titlenamegoeshere

#

like with Below Zero

mellow geode
#

the next game could be called sn 2, if the story somehow continues what happened in sn

finite vale
steel shoal
#

Below Zero is very different on purpose, makes sense they didn't go with Subnautica 2 for it. Obraxis also sent a couple messages here saying that BZ ≠ SN2

finite vale
#

Aurora crashes, Ryley ||escaped||, thats about it.

steel shoal
#

Behind figuratively, because on that side of the map there's nothing

finite vale
steel shoal
#

The Aurora was the largest cargo ship, and it was tasked to build a Phasegate in the Adrianne arm, but crashed on the way due to miscommunication. We could maybe get another try at that?

#

Or do something for Alterra again

finite vale
#

I really hope we don't get a copy of the S1 format.

#

"Aaahh! I crashed and have no way home!" grabs materials, home depot theme starts playing, goes home

#

I hope they do something more original.

steel shoal
#

They most likely won't copy, but they did say that it was a "Subnautica game"

finite vale
#

Something I really want is a super tropical Subnautica. I know that S1 had that feeling but you know, it would be cute to have a huge tropical-themed area with lots of coral and bright vibrant biomes.

wise bone
#

i did find it a little odd when they changed the bz story to start with crashing into the planet

mellow geode
finite vale
steel shoal
#

They are definitely going to take some stuff from BZ, like how they made biomes. SN was too sparse, didn't feel very tropical except for the center pieces and a couple other biomes.

#

4546B is very hot, even in the Arctic areas

finite vale
#

I just hope S2 makes things way bigger, like maybe even a bit larger than the Subnautica crater, but also while keeping things detailed and fun like Below Zero.

steel shoal
#

That's exactly what I wanted

mellow geode
#

idk how ambitious the devs might be with UE5, who knows we might get procedurally generated maps

clever crow
#

subnautica's biggest flaw is that map could be bigger

steel shoal
#

But it's important to understand that they're not Baldur's Gate 3 devs

finite vale
#

Like I prefer S1, but like you said ofc it's very sparse and there are some biomes that are just... NOT even biomes more like flat areas with names (Sea Treader path, The Dunes)

steel shoal
finite vale
#

It's big enough, just lacking in detail and some biomes have no creativity.

steel shoal
#

UE5 doesn't require a ton of custom code to allow open world maps

mellow geode
wise bone
#

the acronyms, what do they all mean

finite vale
steel shoal
#

BG3 is the largest (in scale) game

mellow geode

BG3 - Bauldur's Gate 3
DOS2 - Divinity: Original Sin 2
UE5 - Unreal Engine 5

clever crow
steel shoal
#

I like the handcrafted maps a little bit more, though

finite vale
#

Okay hear me out;

steel shoal
#

Not a little bit, I love them so much 🫶🫶

wise bone
#

I think it'd be too hard to have as much detail as SN and BZ when using procedurally generated maps

finite vale
# finite vale Okay hear me out;

In Subnautica 3 what if the Void had a bottom (like it originally did WAAAYYY back in ye ole days of Subnautica) and we had a story mission where we needed to go down there

unique jacinth
#

Meh

wise bone
#

void is a massive area of nothing I don't think it would be interesting to have to explore

steel shoal
#

The Dead Zone used to have a bottom, but it was removed for performance, and also to stop people from building down there. Things get laggy.

unique jacinth
#

How are we going to get down there without some overly insane depth module tbh

mellow geode
#

you can still have procedurally generated maps using handcrafted assets. but as i recall UE5 boasts tools to make world generation much easier and you can get massive worlds that look handcrafted without actually needing to put in as much effort.

finite vale
#

Still, would be cool to go down there.

mellow geode
steel shoal
#

Dead Zone being boring is by design, not me favorite place

wise bone
#

I hope they spend a lot of time perfecting the next game rather than rush it out

finite vale
#

I have a friend IRL who told me a neat idea, that if Subnautica had a bottom to the void, we should've been able to find super crushed wrecks of lifepods and such

#

Since some of the lifepods sadly deployed into the void.

wise bone
#

with the pressure down there, would they be even recognisable as lifepods

steel shoal
#

Most of the pods didn't even launch

unique jacinth
#

1-20 or something like that launched according to the black box in Aurora

mellow geode
# wise bone oh really? sounds pretty cool

it's a little long and kinda off topic but this shows what UE5 is capable of in world generation. and that's from over 2 years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxJ5DG8Ytog

wise bone
#

true, though there's like 15 unaccounted for

steel shoal
#

I must check the starting sequence, but the lifepods 1-25 didn't launch all at the same time

unique jacinth
#

Or just launched into explosion

steel shoal
#

It's possible that a few were deployed and exploded with the Aurora

wise bone
finite vale
mellow geode
steel shoal
#

Subnautica is at least realistic in some parts, but we can have a lot of diversity in the same map

#

Arctic Spires, Lilypads and Koppa are in the same game

wise bone
finite vale
#

I hope we get some type of toxic biome like the ||lost river|| and (more specifically) Aurora before it's repaired, and we have to equip some certain upgrades/a special dive suit in order to get there. You know, a nice level of challenge?

steel shoal
#

We'll see. I currently only know of derpfish2

finite vale
#

I really want Subnautica 2 to challenge us with new mechanics and such.

steel shoal
#

Yes, challenge

mellow geode
#

some puzzle elements might be fun

steel shoal
#

There isn't much challenge, I'd love more complicated things than turning off the engine

#

Although the ice dragon seemed kinda annoying

finite vale
mellow geode
#

right now it's all explore and discover. having to explore, discover and figure out how to open/access stuff would be fun

finite vale
#

I really want more challenges, that's one of my main things. Like I said, what if we had to craft things in order to access certain biomes? What if we had more interesting elements? New complex mechanics?

steel shoal
#

I also want more Ice Worm type leviathans.

#

Invulnerable leviathan that doesn't follow a path, they did it wonderfully

finite vale
#

I really want more leviathans with extra mechanics.

mellow geode

Yes, it's part of having an accent

#

It's fun but not as clear

spice loom

These look awfully similar to the "Cables" from SN like the alien ones attatched to the different facilites

#

Not sure if it just me that thinks this

steel shoal

I can see the resemblance

Alterra is the newer model, Xenoworks is the older model.

if i didnt know any better you would be able to convince me i was on earth

cerulean musk

# cerulean musk mister sir explain yourself

Ok, one more time. Prior to the events in SN, Alterra Corp bought Xenoworks, and rebranded their items with minor updates. So the PDA in SN was branded Alterra. Two years later in BZ, we see Robin and her borrowed equipment with the PDA labeled Xenoworks, indicating it is an older model (at least 2+ years old). So, it’s an older PDA, but we are only now seeing this in the game.

#

Imagine you play a game and the game character is using a Windows 11 system. In the game sequel, the game character is using a Windows 7 system. Just because you saw it later doesn’t mean Win7 is newer than Win11.

She wasn’t authorized to take it, presumably. And for all we know she did plan to return it. Who would miss a 2+ year old PDA when the new ones are out?

#

People keep thinking Alterra is an evil corporation (wrongly) and we have employees pilfering equipment…. 😂

steel shoal
#

But after BZ, we kinda see Alterra is not that bad. They treat their workers quite well.

No

steel shoal

Robin doesn't own a PDA

cerulean musk

steel shoal

She borrowed all the equipment to check something in 4546B, and was planning to return it before anyone noticed.

but how does it have personal files from another pda?

chrome cedar
#

Cloud sync is also a thing.

cerulean musk
chrome cedar
#

We have no idea what Robin had before she came to 4546B. All we know is that she borrowed the PDA because the game tells us this.

cerulean musk
#

so, copied files from her own pda that had the most clues or whatever happended to sam and left the rest on her other new pda?

chrome cedar
#

We may never know. Also don’t know what she had for breakfast before she left, or if she maybe left the stove on.

celest wolf

is the seatruck dock the only thing being added to this game?

#

and also, any tips on finding the seatruck dock blueprint/fragments?

steel shoal
celest wolf
#

any tips for finding the moonpool then?

#

like, is it at one of the places on the alterra map or smth?

steel shoal
#

The story will lead you there. Once you get to that point, you will get many more things at the same time. Before it, you won't get anything much. It's not in the map.

celest wolf

should I go to the ||Pilots last location||?

steel shoal

Yes

is it there or is it more later in the story

Look for different caves, facilities or other points of interest
