hey @lethal fossil , a good way to approach rendering (especially digital) is to paint on top of color flats with as simple and broad a brush you can use. The size of the brush can change depending on the area you're painting, but the point is to keep it as large as possible so you only need a few strokes to block in the color. Better even if the brush has a nice opacity fade to it, to get a range of value all in one sweep.

Spotless hoverfish as an example here (to see the brushstrokes better)

The following pictures are a creature I made up, idk what to call it, but the way they behave is whenever an ice worm breaks the ice, they run to the hole and spear fish to eat.
They’re also passive unless you come near them, then they’ll attack until you leave them

They roar into the water to scare the fish to where they can spear them
