I guess, the main reason why it looks smooth (even though it uses whole pixel movement and no interpolation)
Is because everything moves in sequence, but not all at once
If you look at the head only, you will see that it lingers for a frame when the torso drops, and then catches up
This makes everything feel less rigid and gives the illusion of better movement L:
