If you don't add reinforcements or foundations you can only really have a single multipurpose room and some corridors before you begin getting hull breaches

For a semi simple explanation; as you build base compartments, you get a number in the top left corner that states your current hull integrity. If that number is negative, the base begins crumbling from water pressure, you need to keep that number in the positives by using reinforcements or foundations (both raise hull integrity, reinforcements are more convenient and easier, but foundations are cheaper albeit more complicated and inconvenient)

A neat feature is if you build your base above the surface, you don't have to deal with hull integrity because there is no water pressure there. It's not a very helpful feature but it is there
