one of the specific questions I have is on if using Xo for the pressure put on by the thorns or the cinder gen of Astra. granted i am new to this game and don't entirely know what I'm doing.

Hey 👋 this is actually a really similar concept to the list that I (mostly) used to climb to Plat with. But I use Xuna instead of Xo or Astra
Xuna can:
use Toltacan to block pathways as well as Howl to keep units near immobile and occassionally in unavoidable Macoa beams
Majan can be really useful to help keep your captivator and macoa untouchable whilst they are still doing all of there offensive capabilities. (you can use cloaker for the same effect but its harder to pull off imo)
and of course Dado for a free heal is really useful on unit that you are using to keep enemy units lockdown - Jailbreak, Toltacan, snareling, captivator
I'd also consider adding Crosshair into your list. If your aim is to keep enemy units in place - adding a unit that deals extra damage to units that haven't moved seems like a no-brainer.
(I also think atzl is hot garbage but there we are)
Otherwise I think its a really cool and fun list and I hope you keep enjoying and playing the game!! GL

EDIT: If you really only want to use either Xo or Astra.
I'd go Astra - having the mobility to get control of all points whilst severly limiting your oponants movement options - especially on 3 control point maps is going to be really strong.
