I just used the airbrush tool and varied the opacity to get nice smooth blends across the blade

You varied the opacity as you were applying the airbrush? The glow looks incredible

to get a smooth blend, just set the opacity on the airbrush really low, like 6%. sample one of the colors you are blending and gradually add it to the other color
