Way of Water Expansion: Oceans, Mounts, and Reef Gameplay
Frontiers of Pandora is already immersive, but one of the most iconic parts of Pandora is its ocean. An expansion inspired by Avatar: The Way of Water could introduce a new biome with unique traversal, creatures, and combat systems, fully embracing Na’vi ocean culture.
Ocean Biome
A vast reef and ocean region with coral reefs, glowing underwater plants, floating islands, underwater caves, deep trenches, reef clan villages, hidden Eywa shrines, and RDA offshore facilities. Supports exploration both above and below water, with dynamic currents and weather events like storms and tidal surges.
Ocean Mounts
• Ilu – agile reef mount for weaving through coral structures and swift underwater maneuvers.
• Skimwing – fast ocean mount for long-distance travel and shallow water skimming.
Surface Riding allows skimming at high speed. Skimwings can also perform temporary gliding above water like flying fish, catching air currents before diving again.
Tulkun Encounters
Rare, intelligent Tulkun appear in migration routes, revealing hidden locations, unlocking temporary buffs, or even guiding players through dangerous areas. They are majestic, non-mountable creatures that highlight Pandora’s oceanic ecosystem.
Underwater Spirit Tree & Skills
A sacred underwater Spirit Tree unlocks a skill tree focused on ocean gameplay:
• Ocean Breath – longer underwater breathing and faster recovery
• Current Rider – increased mount speed and maneuverability
• Silent Diver – reduced detection by predators and RDA
• Wave Leap – enhanced surface jumps on mounts
• Tide Hunter – improved spear and melee damage in water
• Reef Guardian – boosts abilities near coral or kelp forests
Swimming Improvements
• optional third-person swimming camera
• faster directional swimming and dodging underwater
• stealth swimming to sneak past predators or RDA patrols
• underwater traversal through tunnels and caverns with realistic currents
Gill Mantle Companion (Txampaysye)
Players can bond with a gill mantle — a bioluminescent jellyfish-like creature that extends underwater breathing.
• Glows when attached to the player, illuminating surroundings
• Provides a slight underwater speed boost
• Must be fed seafood (fish or underwater plants) or detaches, requiring a new bonding
Expanded Melee Combat
Spears remain core, but includes additional weapons:
• Metkayina Knife – short melee, cannot be used on mounts
• Handheld Spear – thrust-only spear, cannot be thrown
• Nets – for catching fish/resources and stunning enemies; best vs human soldiers and airborne vehicles, slow throw, minimal effect on mechs
• Spears (mounted/throwable) – primary melee weapon for underwater/mounted combat
• Tridents – versatile underwater thrusts
• Daggers / Short Blades – dual-wield for fast underwater strikes
• Mounted Fin Blades – attachable swipe weapons for mounted combat
Mechanics: chained combos on mounts, underwater-specific animations, weapon synergy with ocean skills
Large Ocean Features
• RDA submarine bases and patrols
• Leviathan-class ocean predators as rare encounters
• Dynamic ocean events: Tulkun migrations, predator hunts, storms, and tidal shifts
This expansion introduces new biomes, mounts, wildlife, combat mechanics, and exploration systems while fully embracing the Na’vi ocean culture and keeping Pandora vibrant and alive.
