Is Cider open source? Did it used to be open source, and now isn't? Why does legacy Cider cost 2 bucks on the MS store but free on winget? Is there a way to install Cider on work computers that don't allow the use of the MS store? Why the hell is Apple's support for Windows devices so atrocious that I have to resort to paying for a third party client?
#What's up with the distribution of this project?

Cider 1 (Legacy) is Open Source
idk if it's always been open source
idk why it costs money but you can find a version of Cider 1 in the Github releases page as an installer.
in regard to work computers that's dependent on your company policy and you may want to check with your IT support about that
apple's app is hopeless because they're apple, they want you to switch to apple products so will give you an experience, just a shit one, while advertising how nice it is on mac, in an effort to entice you into buying an apple product.
i guess my main question is: is there any way i can get cider 2 for free? i understand that developers need to be paid, but its kind of my only option right now because every other way of using apple music is buggy and annoying
cider 1 is also an option i guess, but its EOL so eventually itll stop working
god
no
Cider 2 is a paid product unfortunately
although if the issue is the MS Store
donors get access to installers (albeit beta installers)
though 99% of the time the same installers get promoted to MS Store
but why is it suddenly proprietary after being open source? is there reasoning behind it?
there's a bit of proprietary optimisations in there
and some services that have are closed-source for security reasons
we are planning on open sourcing the application at some stage
though for now we need to pay for stuff
like cloudflare
and firebase
lol
another thing im worried about is the ability to share my license
my entire family has windows PCs, they also need to be able to use apple music well
thatd be cool
as i said, donors get an MSI installer for windows
whats the minimum to donate
US$5 is enforced by open collective
which is weird because it's technically more expensive than the app on the MS Store, but it's beta access, exclusive roles, and priority stuff
hm
physically can't stop you from sharing that MSI with your family on a USB stick
wait what do you need firebase for
i might donate
but thats only because you featured one of my favorite songs on the homepage LMAO
that would've been crypto lol
kinda on an afternoon nap rn, buts it’s 1pm
no
or deezer support
We’ve worked on AME/Cider for around 3 years as volunteers. Literal blood, sweat and tears have been poured for almost no return.
Essentially, we would like to paid for our work and be able to comfortably afford the necessary fees and expenses, but we need it to be a win win situation for everyone
yeah looking at the deezer Dev ToS
not happening, commercial use is forbidden
very good explanation
except i've only been here for like
6 months
you’ve done a whole lot
because i have nothing better to do
and because i use this to procrastinate my actual work
me too lol
i mean, yeah i can understand that
but you can get why im frustrated that buying cider is basically my only option right
with that i mean that apple has terrible support on windows
we are not apple
we're not even affiliated with apple
i know
im not frustrated at you
cider seems really good
its just the fact that im basically forced to use it
i think ill stick to spotify for now
well, for people like yourself, we found a problem, and we've made a product to fix it
that's capitalism for ya lol
apple isn't very good at windows apps lol
this is just a suggestion, use it how youd like: please make an alternative way of purchasing cider (stable)
thatd make things a lot easier ngl
Donors gain access to both of these channels
the releases one gets updated at around the same time we push updates to the MS Store
stable versions are distributed there too?
and since we instil fear in the Microsoft store approval team it's usually about a week
Cider 2 itself is early access
not stable
not ready to be considered stable
and we're still adding features
the core features are mostly stable though
as long as it doesnt crash every 2 seconds im happy
like jfc i cant even open up the listen now tab on apple's new beta music app without it crashing instantly
its hard for me to buy cider right now, considering im not paying for my subscription
it took a lot of work to convince my family to try out apple one for a month, and if i buy cider and they dont continue the subscription itll be useless for me
on the other hand, i cant properly try out apple music without cider
hmmm
that sounds like a difficult situation to be in
i wish you the best of luck 😄
have a lovely sleep then
lol
the old Cider source was and still is open source. Cider 2 is a 100% different code base hence why it isnt open sourced
No code that was at one point open source has been close sourced
we havent changed anything, just made new products
