Peter McKinnon pursued YouTube full-time when he only had 800 subscribers and made $0.55 cents on the platform. For contrast, other creators like Graham Stephan quit his full time job when he made $1,000,000 from YouTube and Mark Rober quit his job after he had 10 million subscribers.

Today, McKinnon has over 5.5 million subscribers, films cine...

I loved how you put the takeaways in text at the bottom whenever they make a good point or give a good tip.

I also really appreciate how much your guests enjoy being interviewed by you. They are all relaxed and feel like you have prepared well and know their work and the story of their career. It's painful to watch interviews during which the guests are itching to leave. 🤭

That ^^ and also…

I really like the concept of making them watch a little something they made and then asking them about it. Feels cool and nostalgic for those who have been fans for a while. I loved how nicely edited these interviews are, just one little thing…

Near the end at minute 15:11, the audio isn’t aligned for a couple of seconds. Idk if you knew that or it slipped, just wanted to let you know.

And one last thing, really liked how you asked Peter about his sponsorships and how he did them and then went and did the same thing. I thought that was super cool and hilarious!!

Your level of preparation is next level Jon, so much respect! I appreciate how you always give your guests a very different interview experience to what they are usually used to. Biggest takeaway was what he said at the end -> "If you're not learning, you're unlearning", great reminder to continuously sharpen our skills!

thanks guys!

@south mesa great to hear you like the takeaways at the bottom. I actually wasn't sure if it was "too on the nose" since most interviews allow viewers to interpret their own takeaways vs me writing them on screen. I'll consider keeping them for future ones.

@gusty flax thanks for catching that audio slip! I actually didn't notice in the many rounds of editing we did but appreciate the heads up and will rely to my editing team. Glad you both liked the Sponsorship tactic...I had a version recorded that was simpler then re-did it all after thinking I literally got to practice what Peter is preaching haha.

@sterile belfry thank you! Yeah sooo many hours of prep going into each interview so it really means alot to hear you say that. PS I haven't forgotten about your Shorts questions! Planning to record response on that tomorrow and edit. Just wanted to let you know it's top of mind : )

Lastly, question for everyone - would you have wanted this interview with Peter to be longer?

The interview actually was about 40-50 min but I only kept the best and most valuable parts to keep it as interesting as possible for YT. What was cut was a lot of banter, repeating of points, etc.

Would you have wanted to see that on the YT video? Or maybe just do extended audio that I put up on my Spotify/Apple podcast?

I personally would’ve prefer it to be longer. I like it when interviews feel like you’re just having a long convo with the guess. So a highly edited episode is not something I really care about. As long as it’s nicely color graded I’m in for it lol

I listened to it on Spotify while I was working out this morning and I wish it lasted longer. I think keeping the shorter version on Youtube and then keeping the extended cut on spotify/apple could be an interesting tactic to test. Would be great to then track how many people go from Youtube to listen to the whole conversation on audio only to see if it makes sense to keep the whole interview on Youtube as well.

Thank you! Yeah crazy to see it cross 170K in 1 week.

It’s actually interesting you bring that up because….can I tell you guys something I’ve haven’t told anyone really outside this discord?

So I’ve been editing that video for nearly a year - I re-did the intro like 4 times, I cut down the interview from 50 min down to the best 16, I re did the sponsored segment to make it more engaging, improved the audio, and all the while I was trying to develop a new editing style so I can use for our future interviews

So I think the short answer is we changed alot for this interview and Peter is a super engaging and intriguing personality which was a huge factor as well

One of quickest paced interviews I've seen on the platform. Value delivered at every step along the way. Seeing lots of comments in the thread around a desire for increased length... One idea to consider is having the uncut long form in addition the shorter 15-20 minute episodes. Maybe the team could keep the unedited one for folks in the discord our tighter community circles and leave the short snappy one for the public? All an all, AMAZING job Jon!!! šŸ™‚
