So, one thing that I want to note is that the circuit has the J201, but in the assembling instructions and bill of materials they listed a PF5102 instead. I didn't had a 5102 at hand, but I had some J201 sitting around and after looking at the schematic I didn't think it twice.

bjt one way, diode the other, just like in the bazz fuss. a diode would do the same because this is working like a diode and a small <1k resistor in series

it is behaving as a diode so the jfet is kind of wasted
repl;acing it with any other diode would make a very similar sound
