You should use invoice.paid to track active subscriptions
It's noted here. I wouldn't use .updated events specificvally to track that as they fire for various reasons so will mean adding convoluted logic to your webhook code to discard (most) events
ok got it, I will route my updates based on invoice.paid and invoice.payment_failed (I assume).
but for the ending/canceled sub should I follow: customer.subscription.deleted or subscription_schedule.canceled?

No, just created products with monthly/yearly as per:
