So this is essentially a freemium plan (as described here https://docs.stripe.com/billing/subscriptions/designing-integration) . But as we get started, we will only have the Free plan (Tier 1) available. When we have new users, will they have to select that plan or would/could they be automatically assigned to it?
if you're using checking then customers will need to "select" it by going through the checkout flow, yes
and yes customers will have access to the portal if you enable it
