https://docs.stripe.com/billing/subscriptions/upgrade-downgrade you can also make the change directly from your server without custuomer interaction.

Yes, but in my case we have not captured the payment details of customer.

so whenever a new user is registed, we created that customer and assigned a free plan to that user which cost 0 through code without creating checkout page for subscription

that's why we don't have payment details of the customer

now how can we make sure that user entered their payment details before updating the subscription

If you don't want to use billing portal, then you need to build an integration by yourself to collect the payment for the invoice generated after free trial https://docs.stripe.com/billing/subscriptions/build-subscriptions?platform=web&ui=elements#collect-payment
