Yeah that’s what I been using now but it’s a bit different since I’m charging up front on the first month, ending the subscription early for the last month and charging the regular subscription amount on the in between months, so instead of doing what I set out to do it’s charging $300 on 06/01/23 then $100 from 07/01/23 to 03/01/24

I would recommend creating a separate Invoice for the 1st month, and then applying a discount for 1 month. This way you can charge earlier.

How would the invoice work at that point would the still have to process a payment intent if there is no card on file?

Yes, the $0 Invoices don't require a Payment Method.
